Installed these on a riding mower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxetgfkJxfdT_B2vGYP-uNTLaBbim9OKTD . They were sharp out of the box, although I've never liked blade edges that were coated...not quite as sharp as I personally want. Using my belt sander, I removed the coating from the cutting edges and refined the edge enough to shave with them. So far, after three runs, these blades are holding up as expected. Even after hitting a few fallen 1/2 inch or so branches, the edges are still sharp as heck. No edge dings, no warping, etc. As far as installing them, the cutouts were of the proper size and shape to fit my aging Craftsman mower. Very satisfied.
Nice idea. A plow blade is a cheap alternative to a snow blower but I think you will find that during winters when there is a lot of snow you run out of places to push it. A snow blower really is the way to go.
Normally I don't comment on videos like this, but I really like the way you put this together, held strong to your ideas, and just made a fun video to watch.
I guess many of the people who comment here do not know that much of the Farm Machinery up to the time of the second World War was made of a combination of Woo, steel and some bolts of different types. Great video....I am just in the process of making a blade for my golf cart....everybody thinks I have lost my mind but videoslike this proves otherwise. Thanks
Hey Big Brother..... aren't you clever!!!!! Very creative! Enjoyed seeing the snow but enjoying our 80 degree weather here today in beautiful Palm Desert, Ca. Sis
Haha, good for you. I realize the enjoyment/satisfaction that comes from having a creative mind and some handyman skills.Nice job on the snow blade! I had a similar tractor with a purchased snow blade attachment. The manufacturer (Craftsman) used a single, centered mounted trip spring which would trip the blade when it reached a certain amount of resistance. I soon realized that the blade would trip way too often against loads that the tractor could have easily pushed through. To solve this problem I purchased another spring from Sears and reattached both springs off center with approx 6 inch space between both. Worked like a charm! I just wanted to share that with out considering the fact that I appreciate knowing there are other similar minded creative handymen out in the world. Have fun with all your future projects!
Thanks very much for sharing your story too. This blade worked just fine for 4 years, before the fire destroyed everything I owned. I have now moved and no longer have that tractor to push snow with, but I used to like to use it. Thanks again.
holy cow i would have never thought to use the grass blades to throw the the snow that's a GREAT IDEA. i live in N.H. and we here get lots of that crap (snow that is) and just by using the grass blades that's a super great idea. thanks & i subscribed to your videos thanks. and in the end REMEMBER it's K.I.S.S. = keep it simple stupid. very cool friend ! it works well, so why not. i got a kick out of you using the blade for chopping up the snow. we had 2 feet of snow here and snow blower didn't work so well. I may think of picking up a lawn tractor now after seeing your video. Thanks for good idea.
holy crap....ive watched a bunch of your videos since I am a rc hobbiest. I look at the user name and had a good laugh. thanx for all the good vids nightflyyer
Dave, Thanks for the idea of building a wooden snow blade for the lawn tractor. I was about ready to put down a few hundred for a metal one to fit my Bolens tractor. I should have thought of wood, it is strong, cheap and easy to work with. Dave
I just used some heavy half inch rope and made myself a set of rope tire chains for my lawn tractor, cheap, easy and dosent tear stuff up as much as chains. Also my homemade plow is at about the same angle as yours and sometimes if it gets caught the front tires lift up. I need a bar like that in the front or your plow for mine to keep it down. Thanks for the ideas.
omg I love the dumb bell hanging in the rear.next time just hop on Craig's list I got a 6 foot truck plow for 40$ some welding and a winch...good to go
It was fun to make it, and it lasted 5 years before the fire destroyed it and all my equipment and models. This was 7 years ago and no blade under 250 could be found then.
I also have a YS4500 to which I have contimplated a plow blade as the snowblower attachment I have seems to run thru belts or throws the belts way too often. I love your idea.
Great job, I have a 4500 model as well. Just might be a project soon. When i used to live in Ohio I had a lawntractor with a snow blade/push blade for the front, it was a lot easier on the body than shoveling for sure. In southern Va we only get a couple snows a winter and its usually every few years we get one like you have there but, a plow would be good for those times. Thanks!!
You sir are a bloody genius! Look how much cash you saved by building your own plow. Oh and I love the mirrors. A little ingenuity and know how goes a long way not to mention the cash savings! Great video and to all the naysayers, why comment, just move on!

I often wondered if I could build a plow like this for my lawn tractor, and now I have some guidance and hope ! Thanks for posting this ! - Frosty up in snowy cold Canada.
Nice job! Now see if you can put a lawnmower blade on your snowblower and cut the grass. Just kidding! I am planning to save money by building my plow for my ATV. Thanks for your help. I think your lift design will save money on the winch.
I used a sheet of 3/4 plywood to plow. I used a 2 x 4 brace with cleats cut into it and two 5" rubber wheel barrel tires as a rubber bumpstop and hood protector. I just lay the sheet of plywood at a 45 degree angle and it catches the hood and I secure it with a chain. Works awesome and on and off removal is a snap
