The "chains" on the back look really good! On the front of my Simplicity 4041, a 1500 lb machine, for snow plowing, I deflated the front tires, added a #40 roller chain on the center of the tread and re-inflated them. Gives much better steering on the ice when pushing snow.
If it were me, I'd try it with the mower deck still on. Remove it if it becomes a problem. Besides, this is giving testimony to how well his homemade chains are working! I like the quick time lapse and no blah blah blah.
HA !! But the mower deck was working as a secondary plow !! Also could blow off a dusting of snow !! He can cut, weld, build his own chains but those 'Quick Pull Clips' are a MOFO🤯...🤣
Not a bad idea. I don't know what advantage there would be to front chains when most lawn tractors are only 2-wheel drive. I was surprised to see the blade because you could have probably blown the snow off with your mower deck.
Hey bud nice craftsmanship, but I'd like to offer a word of caution from a guy who works on mowers for a living. Your chains are going to beat your transmission to death. The repeated jarring and bouncing causes the top of the transaxle case to break up and the bushings will crack as well. I've seen it first hand with craftsman poulan and husqvarna tractors and it appears your machine is made by the same ayp group. Wheel weights would help but unfortunately the extra rotating mass ends up tearing up the brass worm gear inside the transaxle. Your best bet is to fluid fill the tires and stud the tires if you have enough lug depth on them and add a small weight box. If you want any help or suggestions on doing anything of those things send me a message I'd be happy to help.
normal tire chains are better then the item in the video ,, extra weight is a must to keep the slipping down ,, also removing the deck will help save the deck from breaking the hangers from the rough work of plowing ,, also make sure the tires are not froze in the ground ,, seen a axle break when a customer tried too drive the mower that was stuck solid in frozen ground ..
I really like your idea . Chain , 1 inch angle iron and I can use my old craftsman to spread dirt better. My Craftsman Bull dosier build has moved a lot of dirt and gravel but mud stops it cold .
you put the chains on back ward, well in forward if you put the small side of the angle iron first then the longer side going back ward its more stable cause the long side is pushed against the tire! Just my two cents worth , Im only trying to help.
Hey if you want even MORE traction I would suggest putting them on opposite sides, backwards of what you did.. Just my thoughts when I saw it, let me know if you try it please.. #1- Your going to get a much better, deeper edge with the snow being able to sink into the tire tread before hitting the 90° edge opposed to the flat part of the angle iron contacting the ground first and limiting it's bite the depth of that edge minus the thickness of the gauge opposed to coming from the other direction.. #2- If you're losing traction, tire begins to spin and then the edge catch's on something solid I think that stress would easily flex the the front edge of the angle iron off the tire tilting your 90° biting edge back on an angle causing loss of ultimate traction.. Where if it's backwards it would have the full width of that angle iron pressing against the tire acting as a brace to keep it close to 90° and prevent it from just twisting everytime it's stressed causing loss of traction.. ( If using strictly for snow on pavement or concrete this probably wouldn't apply but I think most people's comments and interests were to make a set for added traction 'off-road'.. Comment if you agree or disagree or have tried.. that's how we learn !! 👍
We made these years ago for bob cat applications. They didn't hold up we utilized different type of materials. It was cheaper in the long run to buy factory tracking.
front tires are a waste if not 4 wheel drive .. should also remove the mower deck it will cause the deck hangers to break due to the rough driving of snow plowing .also said in text in the video he removed the front chains
I used to run heavy equipment, big dozers to little dozers, and every one had track pads like that, and everyone would slide on ice, they always found the low spot, whether it was a ditch, or over the hill, just sayin
Very cool, thought of similar. However hows that treat your driveway after 2-3 years? Asphalt is going to get torn up quick, and concrete is going to wear. Maybe same idea with some sort of industrial rubber/conveyor belt treads? Chains wouldn't work about as well?
The idea seems interesting in terms of increasing traction. But it also increases the stress on the ball bearings of the wheels and the steering. If I were you, I would keep a close eye on these elements. While watching the video, we can clearly see that the entire tractor is subjected to the jolts produced by these chains.
If you want to turn you need traction in the front to. Can't believe you guy's can't comprehend that. No traction in front you turn the wheel and you go straight. Try it with the chains on then take them off and try to turn, makes a big difference. I hope you can make a video of you doing that it will change people's minds about chains on the front tires.
I know some guys that used their lawn tactor to plow or bought a snowblower for the front. They used chains on the rear but they had to add weight to the rear of the machine to get enough traction on ice even with the chains.
It’s awesome as long as you understand that you are destroying your lawn under the snow and come spring your going to have tractor tracks going back and forth across your yard but still very cool idea 👍
Surprised they don't spin off every so often. I would add a second chain inside the others on each side of the tire, with one or 2 links in away from the cleat. It would thrn hug the sides and make it much tougher (almost impossible) to spin out of.
Because of the open differential. The right wheel is the only one that spun Because it had less grip than the left. If the right had more grip the left would have spun. In a nut shell, in a system with an open differential, power will be sent to the wheel that spins with the least amount of torque. You can see that the tractor has an open differential when he turns one wheel making the other turn in the opposite direction. There are oodles and oodles of videos on TH-cam about how every kind of differential design works, including open, limited slip, automatic locking and selectable locking.
better steering on ice, no other reason, but the crossbars were really redundant. just chains alone do work better because the tire slips sideways, a straight peice of iron across defeats the purpose. for the rear, perfect 👍
Did buy some tire chains similiar to these not homemade have heavy rubber grab bars not steel for tractor with a blower on the rear wheels only. New 10K concrete driveway did not want to damage it with metal chains spinning on the ice. The rubber ones work great do not do damage to the surface but give a bumpy ride so go slow.
Absolutely brilliant!!! One question? Does the tires with the chains on tear up the yard? Also does it leave scar marks on asphalt? Happy New year good Sir
Excellent Design - The Simplest things in life are the best - like fresh is best naturally. The only thing I would add is some rubber padding on the L shape parts or even something for example as simple as garden hose one size + . This way it will two things - protect + being quieter. 👍🏅
Nice!! Can definetly will fit my suzuki samurai just modify a good chain tensioner, from standard street 205 70 R15 tire go a tractor wheels!!!! 4x4 !!!
Careful what type of rider you put these chains on. most transmissions are not made for this type of resistance. Spending $200 in materials and 10 hours in labor to ruin a $2K lawn mower is no bueno
First of your videos I’ve seen. Excellent! Now, about the security fence…. The horizontal at the top should point to the outside of your property. Pointing inwards it’s ineffective.

Excellent. My next project. Too many negative comments here, give this man credit for being creative. Or just shut up.
Those are the only choices huh? That's a pretty negative comment there.

Try losing the mower deck during winter.
That’s just multitasking like real men do
Whether in the manufacture, installation and use, it's simple, fast and efficient at all levels

Dude take the mower off, for one you get the salt on mower it's going to rust badly, that's why they came out with tractor weights?
Not necessary having that blade
No don't it adds weight and the more weight the better
Snow Sweeper attachment instead of mower blades 👍
If it were me, I'd try it with the mower deck still on. Remove it if it becomes a problem.
Besides, this is giving testimony to how well his homemade chains are working! I like the quick time lapse and no blah blah blah.
The mower deck adds ballast and lowers the center of gravity.
Awesome! One recommendation, put high spot welds on the top of the bars. On side hills you now have skis.
Problem solved!!! I love your genius idea!!! My dad would love you!! Now put them on the market so I can buy them!
How about video on how to take mower deck off ...? Dr ...?
HA !! But the mower deck was working as a secondary plow !! Also could blow off a dusting of snow !!
He can cut, weld, build his own chains but those 'Quick Pull Clips' are a MOFO🤯...🤣
Wow. These are the best tire chains/tracks I have seen and easy to make. Good job. I may build a set for full size tractor that had turf tires.on it.
Not a bad idea. I don't know what advantage there would be to front chains when most lawn tractors are only 2-wheel drive. I was surprised to see the blade because you could have probably blown the snow off with your mower deck.
Regular tire chains would have been my choice.

Had a craftsmanship...rear end went bad.....they are light duty transmissions...don't over stress them

It’s a great idea for the back tires only thanks for the video
THIS GUY IS A GENIUS I LOVE HIS IDEA IT'S A PROBLEM SOLVER.
More like a problem maker if he truly expects the light duty transaxle to handle the load of a huge blade and added traction. Jeeeez Louise!
Your the best 👌thanks for sharing 👍I need that for my tractor 🚜 cool.

all you need is a workshop, appropriate tools, materials, skills, and time, as well as need - where I live there is no snow - ever!
Hey if you want even MORE traction I would suggest putting them on opposite sides, backwards of what you did.. Just my thoughts when I saw it, let me know if you try it please..

That is awesome!! Please give an update on how well they are holding up.
Great job ! Looks like you should patent the chains and market them!
Why do you need chains on the front wheels? Is the mower four wheel drive?
Steering
Sretna nova godina.
Great idea. Wondered if instead of angle iron sections maybe sections of chain might work to conform to tire better. 🤔
Chains were used over 100 years ago!
So you mean like tire chains lol
That’s literally just a tire chain
coming soon how to replace mower transmission
Brilliant!
I had a lawnmower like tgat that I was using for getting wood , and it was spinning like mad , if only .....
Thank you very much
No good on ice bit of a slope it will slide sideways like it's got skates on just like Dozer tracks if you don't have growser bars on them

Chains make the ride as rough as hell, carbide studs tear up concrete and blacktop. Not sure their is a good solution.
Ovo kad' pogledam, odma' mi gusjenice padnu na pamet... 😂🙄😅
😂😂😂
i would try notching the center of each cleat to prevent lateral movement on ice

There needs to be a weak point somewhere in the drive system and you will find it now. Either the axles or the transmission will go next.
How are mud tires no different? It's what I have on mine.
crazy , regular pair of chains cut off will do the same thing

those are more like the steel tracks for a wheeled bobcat than tire chains. awesome idea!

Good idea but the the chains on the front tires seem pointless being they aren’t drive wheels and only for steering.

Great job but I don't understand why you still have your mower on in winter??? I'm sure that creates drag!
Like Army tank tracks won't hurt your pavement in cold hard weather with snow. of course 100 times liter than one.
Any difference in traction if the “L” of the angle iron faces in driving direction front or rear?
Stop and think for a second, this was never tried before? This didn't work very well? O yea, chains is what works!

Why do the front tires if it’s not 4x4.
I think i would have used channel vs angle. Doubling the contact points and smoothing out the ride. Otherwise a cool idea
Yep. I agree. Maybe inch-and-a-half by one inch channel. But, the setup he has now works so, go with it. He might want to take the deck off before the next snowfall, though.
I did a set - channel 2x.25 and 10 3/8 long and heavier chains.
