$50 versus a $400 bagger can't go wrong with that I think if the vent screen was in the cover it would work even better awesome job

Every mod you make you’re getting closer to what my factory bagger setup looks like. Smooth pipe vs corrugated would improve airflow. As the others said, moving the vent to the hole you already have in the top would help too and prevent the lid from trying to come off. Nice job on creating the template and then making the final version from it.

Don't know what your mechanical background is , but ; I will give you credit for a really great job on your project !!! I am a retired metal worker , fabricator , by trade and you have obviously achieved the desired end to your project. Sometimes it takes some trial and error adjustment when starting from scratch with a new idea and you made very few mistakes especially considering what you started out with. Great Job , and keep on pursuing your ideas and sharing them on You Tube . You don't know who you may encourage enough with an idea or a plan that may inspire someone else to achieve their dream !!! I have swapped out regular mower blades for "high lift" blades with good results. These blades create more wind to take leaves up the chute. Enjoyed your video. I like your honesty re the tips section.
You might also move the air outlet to the top or higher up the side to allow exhaust air to exit more freely as the receptacle fills.

I made something very similar to this years ago. I found that when the air has an easy path to escape [via the container], then everything worked much better. I had 2 screened openings/vents for the air to escape; 1 on the top and one on the side with the main vent [larger], on the top which worked the best.

Very resourceful. I bought a second-hand John Deere Tractor that has a bagger system on it. What I don't like about it is the bags are cloth and they spew dust everywhere. I thought of finding a Craftsman system since theirs have plastic bins on them and retrofit my system. But, you just gave me an idea to make one myself. Thanks for sharing your creativity with us!!

Interesting. I've been messing around with a similar concept for two seasons and even bought some of the same materials.
My experiment starts with my Stihl leaf blower (using it as a vacuum), runs through a pipe to the trash can. My primary interest is quick and easy shredding, containerized, then used for compost.
What I've learned thus far is that a smooth pipe works better than a ribbed pipe and that the Sthil creates so much force, I can't keep the cover on the trashcan.
So, back to the drawing board.😉
I enjoyed every second of it. Best Part was your paint and flex tape already fucked up after first test. Then the ultimate pro tip nobody could ever have thought of. Comedy Gold!

I built a similar leaf collector. I used a plastic 50 gallon barrel. I put a door on the bottom rear of the barrel do I can get the leaves out.
It works best to mow the leaves first to break them down, then go back over with the collector system and pick them up.
Mine works really well. I then have to figure out how to get the leaves into my trailer to haul to the composting facility out city has.
This is by far the coolest video I’ve watched today. Maybe even today AND yesterday.

Got a new sub brother! I'm in the same boat this year after spending too many additional hrs cleaning grass clippings and leaves. A 90 min job turns into 3 hrs after going over it multiple times cleaning up clippings or collecting leaves.
Being that I have all the necessary equipment I'll be trying this this coming weekend!! I'm all about diy with stuff like this too and this is perfect. Great video!

Nice job. I wonder if putting screen on top would be better, and place a deflector just past the input chute to direct leaves to bottom. The smoother the pipe the better too.

If you could figure out how to make the airflow work while putting the inlet and the vent / outlet in the lid of the garbage can then you could run a bag inside the can for easier cleanup.

I've been wanting to do this,but with a trailer I have. We have a lot of leaves in the fall! Put mesh on the hole in the lid, increasing the flow. And you would see when it's full.

97 man hours later, countless trips to Lowe's/HD, 3 missed kids soccer and baseball games and over 15 rolls of duct tape, WALLLLLA, don't have to rake leaves, haha. But seriously, a great invention and solid build, impressed.

Great idea,good job,I suggest more ventilation on your tank to reduce back pressure to tank which will allow the grass cuttings to flow more freely. You need to start your own mfg company and market your product. Trial and error are the key to success brother! A new unit for my scag is 2000 dollars and you have that beat by a mile! Great job,great innovation. This is your calling!

I check to see if anyone has created a way to actually bag them in paper leaf bags. Looks like your design could be close. Instead of trash cans, maybe cut slit lengthwise from the top to the bottom of a paper leaf bag.
There would need to be a screen running inside of the bag to prevent the solid contents from escaping. (If the screen or mesh was biodegradable, and inexpensive the bag could be tossed with the screen left inside.)
Perhaps the bag could be fastened/ strapped to a hand cart and towed behind the mower. The bag could be positioned in a more horizontal angle if needed. Maybe Zip tie the bag opening to the leaf exhaust pipe or some form of draw string that could release for bag removal and replacement?
Fun to speculate possibilities! Love that you took the first steps to build on!!! That was awesome. I applaud your efforts to tackle this age-old, back-breaking problem!

Snagged one for my Ryobi Electric riding mower for $168 at a second hand store. Found out later it was for a zero turn. It works well but I'll be modifying it slightly to make it a little better when I get time! I believe your conclusions are spot on with the flow it your design. I'm not sure if you have bagging blades but they will help significantly as well.

I just made a cover to seal up the opening where the grass comes out and just mulched my leaves and I have big oak tree leaves. Works great.
I am with you. I just bought a $38 mulch plug and let the leaves go back in the soil. Good project though. I worry about the light weight plastic at the discharge area.

I had a factory one that would always clog up in the tube. Got a tow behind lawn sweeper. Works much better. Best to mow the leaves first, then sweep them up.
