Curious how they felt on more technical trail. I typically use the Speedgoats for trail and Rincon for road. Upcoming Dilemma is JFK50 which has such unique varied terrain. Tried the challengers hoping they’d be a happy median, but wasn’t impressed with them as much. Love to hear any thoughts. Thanks again Ethan!
Just hit 500 miles on my Rincon 1's with a 11 mile run. Noticed an email from Strava screaming at me to replace them but having a hard time letting go :). Great review, perhaps time to move on to the 3's. They've held up remarkably well and I have put them through the ringer including marathons, trail and lots of road training. Great video as always!
That's impressive. I ultimately retired my Rincon 1's with 390 miles. The exposed lateral outsole was too chewed up and it did start feeling flat. I probably could have transitioned it to a mild trail shoe to get more miles out of it, but since I mostly run on concrete I decided to just retire them. As noted in this video, durability has continued to be a big concern of mine as well with the Rincon. The added rubber to the midsole in the Rincon 3 gives me hope that they'll continue to address durability concerns in the 4th version.
Rincon has become my favorite shoe. I have long felt this is a very underrated and overlooked shoe. It does wear around the edges, but I feel like this midsole and forefoot has maintained its cusion longer than expected. Have had all versions. Happy with my 2's currently but can't wait to get me some 3's.
This review is spot on to me. The update to the outsole is significant - my 1s and 2s both wore down to nothing in the very spots they added rubber. Durability for the 3 was my biggest question. I put about 400 miles on each of two pairs of the 1s before the midsole felt like it was gone, then about 300 miles on the 2s. If the 3 is feeling flat after almost 100 miles, can’t say I’m enthusiastic about this version.
Good and honest review as always. I love my Rincon 2, but agree that the durability makes me question my purchase and the willingness to buy these shoes again. It's good to see that HOKA is listening to their customers. I just hate falling in love with something, knowing that it's only going to last for a short while :D
Totally agree regarding durability, if this kind of shoe would have better outsole, what means more more rubber ... they will be almost perfect ... or a "cheaper" version of Clifton version.
I have liked it before even watching the video. Don't normally but when its a Rincon on the Ginger Runner channel its bound to be worth watching. Also loving the other recent uploads Mr Ginger!
I destroyed the outsole on my Rincon 1s after about 80 miles, but I still got 330+ mi out of them. Will definitely give the Rincon 3s a look. Thanks, as always, for the great review.
I got hooked on the Rincon with version 1 and I am still hooked with two pairs of version 2. Can’t wait to try version 3. Looks like they have found a winning recipe.
I’m about 40 miles into my Rincons and think the fit is improved over version 1 and the midsole seems more resilient than other versions. I’ve been happy with it so far. The Cliftons (and other EVA shoes) flatten out too. I actually enjoy the Cliftons more after they lose some of their squish. Overall the Rincon feels like a Clifton lite. It’s been really enjoyable. Kinvara 12 review coming soon?
I’m 40-odd kms into mine, definitely enjoying them more than v2 (which are currently at about 440km). The upper feels better and more breathable, and being a Sasquatch with size 14 feet having something like this in terms of weight:comfort is awesome. They’re on the shelf now until I discard the V2 in a week or so.
The midsole of my Rincon 1’s went “dead” around 125-150 miles and that really put me off an otherwise great shoes. Sounds like that’s still an issue and one that would be nice if Hoka fixed.
I'm loving my Rincon 2's & the 3 sounds like it'll be a great new addition, though the short tongue & laces potentially pressing down over the sock may be an issue 👍🏃
I have been running with previous version (Rincon2) for almost 250 miles, I really like the feeling with previous version and I am only disappointed with the durability of the outsole, which I think is how Hoka had the rubber. Nevertheless I like the response of the shoe. Definitely I will try this version 3 thinking that the outsole will be more durable than Rincon3. Thanks for this review Ethan.
I have over 500 miles on my Rincon 1 and the cushion feels like brand new. No change since it was new. Bought the Rincon 2 recently and couldn't tell the difference in the midsole or cushion. Yes, there is wear, but no change in cushion or midsole feel after over 500 miles. I'll get over 800 miles on the shoe easy, and that's all I expect from a $115.00 shoe today. Durability, no issue. The only issue I have is the forefront is narrow and presents problems with a thick insert.
@TheGingerRunner I have the first version and this one the latest. I don't know about the 2nd version of Rincon, but I was disappointed in the tongue and especially the mid and outsole design. Shame on me for not paying attention but this version is more for those who supinate. Now, I have to find some gel type arch support to compensate.
I'm running in the Rincon 2. It is probably my favourite road shoe. Did 14km in Speed 2 and 8km in Rincon 2 on the weekend. For some reason I just love the Rincon. Also love the Speed 2. Also been running in Clifton 7 and 8 and rebel v2. I rank Rincon and Speed equal top. Next both Clifton 7 and 8. Rebel v2 didn't work for me unfortunately as too much ground feel on pavement - risking injury.
Another Rincon V1 victim, where my midsole went pancake flat at 250KM. Skipped the Rincon V2, and eventually was able to get a pair of Mach 4's which are still going strong at 400KM. I'd love to try the Rincon V3, but until I see multiple long term reviews, there are better places to spend my money than a shoe with a 250KM limit.
I am 77 y.o. 182 cm, 72 kg, been a runner since 1963 HS and Univ track ream, road racing and masters races. Then was bush pilot in Alasks 5 yrs, but got lymphoma l(rg B cell) in 2018. 13 chemos, 7 radiations--seem to have beat it. Repatriated to Canada 2020, because of Trump-o-phillia. I Have such a hate-case that I won't buy NB because they liked him, at onee time. Anyway, I started jogging again and can now do 10 k in about one hour...big effort----and I used to do some marathons (Rome, San Silvestro, Vienna, & Pikes Peak 1980's, ). ANYWAY, I BOUGHT HOKA RINCON 3 AND REALLY LIKE THEM. I have Brooks Divide, Nike Renew, and now HOKA. Then ADIDAS Sprintstar spikes. I wNna see how I an do again. PB' in my history (long time ago): 200m = :25.6 400m = 53.4 800m = 1:56 mile = 4: 28 5k=15: 40 10k = 37: something and Vienna Marathon 3: 05. But I do like to run...and it's fun starting over 'cause I was circling the drain 4 yrs ago. We'll see how Hoka works . In old days I ran in black canvas Converse Track Star, then Spot-Bilt spikes, then I tried the ugly NB "ripple-sole," then Etonic Nike Terra, Nike Oregon with the netted sole, to name a phew! Well that's my little tune. Sez A. E. Houseman "To An Athlete....etc." BOB
Rincon 1 was my favorite shoe for long distances....until the midsole started giving me all kinds of injuries around 140 miles. Switched to Kinvara 11 and pretty happy with those.
Having talked to some folks at Hoka the Rincon 3 uses a lighter weight EVA than the previous versions (same midsole as Clifton 8). Also that decoupled groove on the outsole makes it feel a bit bouncier I think!
Not sure if it’s my weight (I’m really light), but I could not feel the comfort/squish in the midsole of the Rincon at all. It almost feels firm under foot. I’ve moved to the New Balance More V3 and the comfort is so much better.
I've got both and tend to agree. Rincon is lighter but sometimes feels very firm. It's probably more durable than people think, but I'm 220 miles into the NB More V3 and still cushion and comfort👍🏾
Strange. I really am not fond of more v3. Feels heavy and takes energy out of the stride. Felt the v2 was much better. Only durability was an issue with the v2
Fantastic review!! Really love how you do these and provide honest feedback. $115 is definitely a great price. I bought my Arahi’s for $130. Glad they kept the price reasonable and that they got rid of that damn “OneOne”. That was so confusing. 🤔
Great review! I love shoes like this (lightweight with low durability) using on a treadmill. Using Salomon Accelerate (poor durability on concrete) but use them in the gym for more than a year and holding up pretty damn well!
Honestly, I love the 3 the most. I’ve had all 3 models but this one has the underfoot feeling we all love, still super light, a little more durability, but that upper is money! It’s breathable and feels good on foot, like a cuddle bug! Obviously, the life span isn’t what we want but if we keep adding durability to it then it becomes heavier. Either Hoka needs to come up with a lighter and more durable midsole, or we need to comes to terms that this is our fun faster day shoe in a rotation. I think if you’re looking for the more durable version of this just go Clifton, still a solid shoe!
Review is spot on, thanks Ethan! Bought 1 then 2 more pair for inventory. Incredibly versatile shoe, fast and good for any distance. Original pair probably packed out but still pretty soft after 150-200 miles.
Got the orange version, love it over version 1. Totally agree, I had clifton one flash backs when I first step into it too. Ran 13km staight out of tbe box and didn't want to stop running in it. Its still the shoe I keep reaching for over the saucony speed 2 and the NB rebel 2.
Agreed. Through one Clifton update after another, and both previous Rincons, this is the closest I’ve gotten to that magic Clifton 1 that I feared was gone forever.
hello sir, loved your video. I am a regular gym goer but lately i have done two road marathon 5 km. its like 1 marathon in like 3 months or so . now i want to go for the 10 km one however i dont know which shoes to buy clifton 8 or rincon for marathons and for running on treadmill at times. I like to sprint as well when i have had my 2 marathons. I am not a professional marathon runner but a beginner who has ran 2 marathon till date of 5 kms. next one want to go for 10 km road marathon . kindly advice for marathon and running fast on treadmill at times.
how is the arch support on these vs. the Clifton and the Bondi? I have flat arches and have tried the Clifton, Bondi, and Arahi and did not like how the arch felt.
I had hopes for the Rincon 3 but sent mine back after 3 hard runs. To me the cushioning is just flat in these - neither soft nor bouncy. I worked harder to run fast in these than the Rincon 2.
I loved my V1’s but I shredded the bottoms in a couple of hundred miles, I wish they’d make them more hard wearing but because of that I can’t choose them over the Saucony Endorphin Speed as a daily
Hoka's durability issues are pushing me to other brands. Low durability = high environmental impact and higher personal expense. The value is questionable.
Agreed on all points. My last pair of Hoka’s were the Clifton 7, and they only lasted 230 km of road running before the outsole started to flake and rip apart
@@lizbee726 Yeah, unless you're a heel striker, you may get even more miles out of them than I did. I'm 61 kilos & a midfoot striker. I only really retired them because my foot finally broke through the inner lateral side lol. When comparing them to a brand new pair, I had compressed the foam a good half centimeter over all that time.
I did about 1600 Kms in Rincon 2 and yes they started falling apart 400 Kms back, but I can still run in them. Quite a few people.change their shoes not because they need new shoes, but because they want new shoes. So, overconsumption causes more of an environmental impact than anything else
After running in nearly every version of the Clifton/Challenger/Napoli (based on GR reviews) I was super excited to try the Rincon, especially as the deals that used to be found on Hoka’s, just don’t exist anymore. Unfortunately, they haven’t lived up to expectations. While I don’t think most Hokas are exceptionally high mileage shoes (usually I get ~250mi before I notice breakdown) My Rincon’s (1) seemed to have lost the Hoka “marshmallow” after only ~110 making them a poor value IMO, Also, something I’ve noticed, but haven’t noticed much in reviews is the less “spring” from the meta rocker, compared to other models. For me this has made me wary of this “affordable” option.
I owe Hoka a great deal, but as I’ve got strong as a runner I’ve also moved away from the brand. That narrow toe box takes just too much prep each time I want to run over 5 miles. Taping toes, lube, toe socks etc etc.
I wonder what impact the runner's weight has on durability. Physics obviously says "some", but I wonder to what degree. I understand Ethan is ca. 190lb, which is on the bigger side for most runners. I'm 245 which is on the much bigger side for most runners, and I go through shoes at a pretty fast pace. Especially trail shoes since I hike on rocks in Phoenix, but even running shoes I go through a pair every few months and I don't run an absurd number of miles. I haven't found the Rincons to be especially bad in terms of durability compared to other shoes.
I am still on y first pair of Rincon 2s but bought a second pair when the exposed midsole started fraying. I expected to be lucky to 150-200 miles. I am now over 300 miles and now expect to get 400-450 miles. Love my Rincons. I also bought Mach 4s which I think are better, faster and would last longer but I don't like the swallowtail heels. Lose those and they would be as light as the Rincons. I paid $160 for the Mach 4s and about $200 for 2 pairs of Rincon 2 so Rincon wins and I expect to buy a couple pairs of Rincons 3 when they go on sale. I'll wait on the Mach 4s until they are worth the premium (lose the swallowtail) or come down in price. I love both.
do u recomend oncloud or hoka? i want traction and cushion and i only do asphalt and concrete i like to run fast. my legs r crooked and flat feet what u recomend ?
Dear Sir . I am thinking about Rincon3 for my first marathon race. My goal is just finishing marathon within 6 hours without injuries. I am 90kgs. Do you think Rincon3 fit for my first marathon race ?
I have got 330 miles out of the first iteration of Rincons which feels pretty good going for me as I am heavy footed,I wonder if these will give me the same?
I can't agree with the durability issue. I ran 63K trail ultra, 2 times 28K very technical trail race, 56K OCC ( shortest of UTMB races) and 36K muddy trail race in Rincon 1. They are still very good. So, yes they are not made for trail but durability depends on your running technique not solely on material. They are so comfortable that I quit wearing chunky trail running shoes.
I expect 300 - 400 miles out of any pair of shoes. If it can go longer then that's great but it has to reach 300 miles for a daily trainer. I'm astonished you've noticed breakdown at less than 100miles. So you're saying this shoe will last 150-200 miles maximum? Can other Rincon users verify this claim or do you get more mileage out of your shoes?
I've got a bunch of Rincon 1s and 2s and I love the feel but I'm so tired of the short lifespan (for me only about 300-400km) that I'm not sure I'm going to bother with the 3 when the Cliftons also feel good but last so much longer (about 700km).
As general comment, considering the unstoppable and outrageous price increases for running shoes. Having been running for over 40 years with 35 marathons and 35 half-marathons on my spreadsheets I consider myself a seasoned runner. For decades I followed the advice to discard running shoes after approximately 500 miles (or 800 kilometres). No longer. I have a pair with over 2,000 kilometres under their soles which are still holding up very well. Of course some expected wear and no longer as bouncy as they were up to a few hundred kilometres ago, but still very usable. I concur that there are many types of runners. Some preferring high stack ratios and other being in the barefoot camp. I am interested in all of these approaches and love pushing my shoes from the bouncy stage right down to a well worn midsole. I have a neutral gait and a regular midsole-strike style, so uppers are also holding up well. Why not experiment with at least one pair in your rotation and see how far you can push them? You might be surprised on how much money you can save by not believing the limits that contemporary running shoe manufacturers are (almost) dictating.
The Rincon 1’s were one of my all times favs and lasted longer then expected. The 2’s were maybe the worst shoe I’ve ever run in. Don’t think I’d get another Hoka at this point.
Rincon 1's my fave as well. I still use them with over 300 miles over my Rincon 2's. The Rincon 2 just not as good. Though I am tempted for the Rincon 3.
Update: ran 31.7 miles of gravel trail in them this morning after posting the review. Still kickin.
Hi, is this shoe good if you only run trails in the forest and mountains?
The pain relief in hips & legs is something I still don't understand but grateful for.

As noted in this video, durability has continued to be a big concern of mine as well with the Rincon. Enjoyed your review presentation. Serious and clear with a hint of GR humour. Effective
Rincon has become my favorite shoe. I have long felt this is a very underrated and overlooked shoe. It does wear around the edges, but I feel like this midsole and forefoot has maintained its cusion longer than expected. Have had all versions. Awesome it was a hard choice but i decided my first pair will be these ...

I put about 400 miles on each of two pairs of the 1s before the midsole felt like it was gone, then about 300 miles on the 2s. If the 3 is feeling flat after almost 100 miles, can’t say I’m enthusiastic about this version.
Most people actually felt the 1 and 2 died already at 150 miles so you'll probably find adequate durability in the 3
I first pair of HOKA is Rincon 2 that I bought two years ago, still have them and love, great quality.
I'm glad that Rincon 3 is coming out in Wide (EE) as well! Thanks for the great review!
Surprised this wasn't mentioned in the review...
The Wide fits most normal feet.
Is it really!? I like this shoe but simply cannot run in them without getting blisters from narrowness. Thank god a wide is coming out.
I use the Rincon 2 for track training.
Perfect fit and will buy Rincon 3 as well.
I have liked it before even watching the video. Don't normally but when its a Rincon on the Ginger Runner channel its bound to be worth watching. Also loving the other recent uploads Mr Ginger!
they nailed it! Great for bigger runners who want a light shoe!
I destroyed the outsole on my Rincon 1s after about 80 miles, but I still got 330+ mi out of them. Will definitely give the Rincon 3s a look. Thanks, as always, for the great review.
Yep I was similar with the Rincon 1s and squeezed out 450 miles but the outsole looks wrecked. Loved them though.
They do offer a wide size in the Rincon now!
Ethan, hope this finds you well! My new Rincon’s are set to be delivered tomorrow… looking forward to them and even more post review!
these kept me running through my first season of hs xc and track spectacular.
my rincon 1 has lasted me for a much longer then i expected but now it's ready to be replaced ... after this video i think i'll grab the rincon 3 !!!
I absolutely love the Rincon’s but that durability is a deal breaker for me, even with the “cheap” price.
Bought Rincon 3 and Asics Novablast 2 the same time. I'm grabbing the Novablast 2.
The midsole of my Rincon 1’s went “dead” around 125-150 miles and that really put me off an otherwise great shoes. Sounds like that’s still an issue and one that would be nice if Hoka fixed.
Same here, otherwise I loved how light and comfy they were. Tempted to try the 3's
I like the background… sometimes simple is best.. especially these days when it’s all viva casino Vegas. I like I like
I'm loving my Rincon 2's & the 3 sounds like it'll be a great new addition, though the short tongue & laces potentially pressing down over the sock may be an issue 👍🏃
A great shoe for a rotation super light & cushioned combo is worth the durability trade off- perfect excuse to try a new pair of shoes
I have been running with previous version (Rincon2) for almost 250 miles, I really like the feeling with previous version and I am only disappointed with the durability of the outsole, which I think is how Hoka had the rubber. Yes! I couldn’t agree more. It feels like the original Clifton. The Rincon is my favorite shoe

Softest cushioning ever, but a little loose and bulky for me. The tongue does come up a little short too. An incredible value.

Like these better than version 2 , added cushion is a welcome sight for my old a** knees👍
After one year of just walking, the liner of my Clifton 7 started to rip. After two years the soil also shows a significant wear.

Excellent review! You mentioned the shoe is narrow however you did not acknowledge that the Rincon 3 comes in a wide version (for the first time).
Hoka: My favorite shoes.
Also Hoka: The company I hate for releasing new versions of my favorite shoes every year.
Fantastic review!! Really love how you do these and provide honest feedback. $115 is definitely a great price. I bought my Arahi’s for $130. Glad they kept the price reasonable and that they got rid of that damn “OneOne”. That was so confusing. 🤔
Arahi 5 is fantastic
Is it available in a wide? Drummm rolllll.... Yes it is! (At least in two of the least interesting colors.) Thanks Ethan!
I completely agree with the review!
Great review! I love shoes like this (lightweight with low durability) using on a treadmill. Using Salomon Accelerate (poor durability on concrete) but use them in the gym for more than a year and holding up pretty damn well!

U got a new subscriber 🤝🏾🔥
Looking for a pair of running shoes for a heavy guy. I'm 300 and get shin splints quick, all signs point to Hoka
I just wish they would consistently have color options with a black sole.
Did u change the mic ??? Cuz i hear the sound is a bit muffled..
hello sir, loved your video.
Good stuff!
This shoe should have introduced a weight to comfort score...
A 1-10 comfort score devided by the weight in ounces.
If you're a heavy runner 75kg> buy them, but don't complain if they bottom out early. Hoka has Clifton and Bondi for people who want more durability.
So what would be the nearest thing to the feel of the Rincon 3 but that lasts longer? Looking for an ultra marathon shoe.
Hoka's durability issues are pushing me to other brands. Low durability = high environmental impact and higher personal expense. The value is questionable.
Solid points.
Agreed on all points. My last pair of Hoka’s were the Clifton 7, and they only lasted 230 km of road running before the outsole started to flake and rip apart
I got 900 miles out of my Rincon 1s 🤷♂️ I am a lighter track & road-type runner, though.
👍 I the review... And 👍 this colourways 💪
After running in nearly every version of the Clifton/Challenger/Napoli (based on GR reviews) I was super excited to try the Rincon, especially as the deals that used to be found on Hoka’s, just don’t exist anymore. Unfortunately, they haven’t lived up to expectations. While I don’t think most Hokas are exceptionally high mileage shoes (usually I get ~250mi before I notice breakdown) My Rincon’s (1) seemed to have lost the Hoka “marshmallow” after only ~110 making them a poor value IMO,
Also, something I’ve noticed, but haven’t noticed much in reviews is the less “spring” from the meta rocker, compared to other models. For me this has made me wary of this “affordable” option.
I've got 2 pairs of the SG5 ..
Both broke down after about 100 miles
Very disappointed because I do actually love them,,so comfy.
Not tried the Rincon
How do we stop the tongue from sliding under the laces? Two different 10km runs and the tongue decides to head towards my toes.
I'm 5'8.5", probably weigh around 155 at the moment. My Clifton 6's only made it about 200 km before they started feeling spent.
This could convert to a Rincon ATR nicely with some pokier podules on that sole 🤞, if only they could cure the trail durability issue.
A rincon ATR would be excellent!
Is this a shoe i could run my first marathon in? Which is the 3 of September. Or not can you recommend another shoe. Any brand!
Thank you
Hi, I’m keen to move away from a stability shoe, could I get away with a Rincon 3 in theory?
Is it good for just road running or can I also use this for trail?
Love the socks…do tell!
do u recomend oncloud or hoka? i want traction and cushion and i only do asphalt and concrete i like to run fast. my legs r crooked and flat feet what u recomend ?
After giving version 3 a go, I can’t but feel like I’ve found the closest thing to the Napali.
What shoes would you recommend for a marathon?
A trail version of the rincon would be Rad
Dear Sir . I am thinking about Rincon3 for my first marathon race. My goal is just finishing marathon within 6 hours without injuries. I am 90kgs. Do you think Rincon3 fit for my first marathon race ?
I feel like asphalt is much hard on shoes than most trails. My tail shoes take forever to wear and they’re rubber wears easier.
I have new hoka rincon 3, i run 600 km and they are still perfect, but my weight is "only" 49 kg
Buy over the Mach 4? Great review as always
I really like the mach! These are $50+ cheaper so I’d say it comes down to budget
would you take it up to the Marathon distance?
Finally, an apt successor to the Clifton 1
Really enjoying the rincon 3 too. Should have ran with them this morning. :D
Hey Ethan, the sound seems a little different here, maybe a little muffled(?)
Haven’t dialed in audio in new studio so had to use lav.
I’m now closer to 150ish since filming, they still have at least another 100 I’d say
@@TheGingerRunner thanks for getting back to me Ethan, that's reassuring.
What is the best shoes for you?❤
I've got a bunch of Rincon 1s and 2s and I love the feel but I'm so tired of the short lifespan (for me only about 300-400km) that I'm not sure I'm going to bother with the 3 when the Cliftons also feel good but last so much longer (about 700km).
Is that vertix 2?
Yup!
@@TheGingerRunner review soon? 👀
Will there be a review of that Vertix? ;)
Of course!
Mach 4 or rincon ?
Grabbed my true size 11 and my toes in my right foot were dyin’ after a few miles. Grabbed a .5 size up and they feel HUGE. Anyone have this issue?
My feet feels going to far inward in them, gonna return them
The Rincon 1’s were one of my all times favs and lasted longer then expected.
Everything is a great upgrade except the tongue & heel tab both got worse..
