    Probably one of the most anticipated trail shoes in quite sometime, the HOKA Speedgoat 5 is HERE. It's a fun update that will make SG4 and EVO fans happy, but it's not without its quirks. What do you think about the new Speedgoat 5 and will you be snagging a pair?

      Thanks for another great review. 100% I’m in. I’ve got 460+ miles on the SG4, and we’re long past due for an upgrade! (In fact, I brought the SG4s out of retirement because I was missing them so much.) Let’s go SG5!

      Seems like they fixed the sp4 problems, but it's not as good as the Evo that was taken away from us. The Evo was near perfect

      4 months after buying, having that heel flare is no good, and the tongue is too short, curls over on itself, and unpadded for me. Bummer - because the rest of it was working. Rarely take mine out anymore. :l

    The Speedgoat Evo is the only Hoka I have gone beyond 300 miles in that haven’t shown any signs of the upper ripping, at 420 miles they still have pop and comfort so I’m excited to try the Speedgoat 5’s!!

      Yes, I agree. Except that I tend to wear out the outer front tread at about 240-250 miles, and still run in them but ditch them around 380-400 miles - I just don't want to slip and slide on the downgrades.

      Surprisingly, I've start busting through the upper of my EVOs at the exterior toe. I'm at around 600 miles on them. Midsole is still nice and still plenty of traction.

  • @sgeorgesuperstar

    Follow up review: After 24 miles, I'm still very much a fan! Not having any upper stretching issues. Swallow tail is not an issue. I use lock lacing and tie and forget them. I love how easy it is to get the shoe on and it is sooo comfortable running. Seems much lighter and faster. I ran a tough 12 mile race and felt fresh at the end. The ONLY issue i've had was the right insert moving around so I may swap it out. I look forward to running in these shoes. Still hard to find but you need to get this one if you're a Hoka fan!

    Love the Speedgoat 5. I agree that the 4 had a more precise fit. The 5 is a bit too stretchy but it is still a great shoe. I frequently switch back to the 4 when hitting more technical trails due to the fit of the upper.

      The sole feels totally different. Not as plush and too stiff. Much prefer the 4

    • @BF-27
      @BF-27 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Same. I was running a technical trail this morning in my 4s and thought there is no way I would have felt comfortable on that trail in my 5s - even having replaced the stretchy laces with an old pair of 4s. The 5 upper is so unbelievably stretchy and the laces make it even worse. The 5 is worthless on anything technical at all.

    For me I feel its debatable about a buy, for someone who has gone through multiple pairs of Evo Mofates (1's and 2's) and a pair of Evo Speedgoats, I would love to have the $150 price point. TBH I have noticed the higher price point usually accompanies a longer lasting shoe, to the point of saving money in the long term.
    The stretched out upper doesn't sound too inviting. Locking down the upper is such a fine line between a bruised top of the foot or no toenails from slamming the from of the shoe. As far as the crud catcher, its a design addition that seems like it has a purpose but is it really just for looks? Thanks for the honest review as always!

    Thank you so much for leaving the distracting 'background' music out for most of your recent presentations. I am a fan again and really enjoy your informative reviews. I also discovered the expanding toe box phenomenon in my latest 'Bondi 7' (D) shoes and for my part, relieved that I have a bit more room now. Almost exchanged those for a wider model. I also own the Speedgoat 3 model and use them for road running, especially in the rain.

    Snagged a pair. Was worried about the fit. I found they ran true to size and a size 11 felt great in-store. I found the upper stretched A LOT on my inaugural run (an 8-mile jaunt around Cougar Mtn here in the PNW). A lot of foot and heel slippage even with a runner’s knot. It was the only time I’ve ever had to stop mid-run and cinch down my laces. Felt fine closing the run out if not a bit too tight. Dialing in the fit and the right pair of socks will be key as they break in even more. I agree it’s a tough call on sizing down. On descents my toes had plenty of room, but a 10.5 would be problematic. I didn’t find any issues with the little Peter Pan tail on the heel. All that said, I literally laughed out loud bombing down rooted gnarly single track because of the grip and cushion on these. They’ll be my go to, but fit is gonna take some experimentation.

    It’s taken a few runs to figure out how tight to lace for a good heel fit/lock the swallowtail but now that I’ve got it, very comfortable. I do find that the gussets feel super tight to begin with then sort of just disappear. The mesh does stretch exactly as you say. Only have about 45 miles on them but they’re feeling great.

    6:30 upper stretching is interesting. I never go wider than the standard D width, but am a half size up and EE width in this model. I think if most went up to the EE width, the upper might not stretch on you as much. 🤷

  • @ldavis4428
    @ldavis4428 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent, thorough, to-the-point review!! I wear a 9W women's in the 4 for hiking. It is just wide enough. I hope the 5 is at least as wide and the stretchiness, for me, will likely be a benefit. I am hoping, as you said, the sole of the shoe is similar. I don't have much fat pad on the bottoms of my feet so I need something with cushion. The concern for me would be that swallowtail at the back. Having torn and achilles, I like the idea behind this. However, I also wear orthotics and am worried about excess heel slippage. Your point about pebbles slipping in is super valid! Thanks again. Frankly, I'm probably going to order a couple different trail shoes in wide. Only wish the Stinson came in wide, it being the only "plush" trail shoe Hoka makes. I think they missed the ball on that.

      I loved SGs 1-3; everything about them worked for me. But the SG4 has been a nightmare. 🙁 They narrowed the toebox just enough that I ended up with a nasty bunion on the outside of my right foot. I tried the men’s version (HOKA’s suggestion) but no joy. HOKA advised against buying the wide version of SG4, so I made do by placing tennis balls in the upper part of the shoe to stretch it out 😠HOKA said they got a lot of negative comments about the width of the SG4. Hoping 🤞the material they’re using on the SG5 will resolve the issue b/c it’s been a perfect shoe for me.

      @@Dee.K.Mikaelson hi there. Yes they are. Ran 16 miles in them yesterday straight out of the box. They are similar to the EVO's but different. Not quite as soft and slightly more supportive which for me is a good thing as I thought the EVO's were a tad soft on technical rocky terrain. I had to redo the lace on the left foot several times but the right was spit on from the off. No idea why though. Grip was brilliant on everything we ran on which included wet grass snow on grass mud and rock. Only thing which I think would help is that the tongue was a bit longer. If the lace goes through the last eyelet which I tried on the left shoe it actually went under the tongue after about 5 mins which isn't good. 5 or 10mm longer would make a big difference. Apart from those minor things all good and looking forward to getting out in them again

    I will buying this as soon as it shows up on RW. I've had 3 pairs of the 4 and 1 Evo and they just work for me. I couldn't get the 3 and below on my feet as they were too narrow. The stretch out issue sounds interesting. I was a big fan of the Speed Instinct and the first Torrent and hope that it is similar to that. How they loosened up but weren't deal breakers. The swallowtail reminds me of the Mach 4 which is my favorite Hoka road shoe. Sounds like a great shoe for me. I even messaged Running warehouse and it's looking like 3/25 for a release date...

    • @Thefifaplayeryant
      @Thefifaplayeryant 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the Torrent 1 stretched out also, this is a major Con in my opinion depending in your footshape...the Torrent 1 was only runnable as a comfortable cruiser after a couple of runs but not usable for even the slightest technical terrain. After my experience with the SG3 the shoe is already a bit unstable in technical because of the higher stack, so I won't risk the Torrent-situation again with this...for cruising there are better options (TNF Vectiv Enduris, Altra Olympus, etc.)

      @sgeorgesuperstar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thefifaplayeryant Thanks for the reply! Thinking back I think I liked the Torrent because everything else Hoka had back then was super narrow. @sgeorgesuperstar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK I finally got my pair and went on a 5 mile run. The first sections were rocky and technical and the last was on forest roads. I really like these shoes! They seemed to have fixed everything that bugged me about the 4's. I know they look narrow but don't feel like it with the new upper. The old upper was so stiff (especially after some miles and dirt) and the heel wanted to squash down. These slide right one and feel great. The shoe feels much lighter. I lock laced and did adjust the shoes mid run and they disappeared on my feet. The swallowtail wasn't an issue for me but I'm a fan of the Mach 4. The SG4 had a sweet spot with the laces you had to find. These new stretchy laces you can set them and forget about them. This shoe reminds me more of the EVO SG3 but with a better outsole. So far not blisters or hotspots. I have a tough 12 mile race this weekend and will see how they perform but am very encouraged so far!

The soles that are 100% non slip imo is Asicsgrip and the Fuji Lite 2 (maybe even 3 now) is more superior offering the same level of comfort and response as SG5. I sold mine because it was a little wide for my narrow feet.

    Thanks for the review! And I have a question. I've been using the SG since the 3rd version and wish they didn't change anything from that shoe. I've worn the 4 and now the 5 for 100 milers and I may have to change to another shoe. I haven't had a chance to try the Mafate Speed 4 out yet, so hopefully that's a possibility. The reason for me not being happy with the 5's is I guess two things. That tongue is basically none existent and left a hole in the top of each foot where you tie the shoes after my last 100 which was on technical terrain. I also found that I couldn't truly lock my foot down in the shoe which resulted in my foot twisting or torqueing inside a little which gave me a blister on the outside of each heel. I never got a blister in 3's and only some slight discomfort on my right pinky toe in the 4's. The tongue on the 4 didn't feel good either but not to the extent of the 5's. I have a very hot 100 in January so no I'm fearing I'll have to find another brand entirely. Any suggestions? Again, thanks for the great review!!

      Get yourself another pair of SG4 while they're still available. Got the SG5 and frankly, it seemed like a cheap version. I'm not impressed with the 5. Laces are lower quality, the midsole is way less plush & responsive. I'm trying to get another pair of 4's.

    I dig the 5 more than the evo, the outsole just feels lighter and livelier, but I do not like the tail, it’s just a funnel for debris. heel cutout on side is different than previous and starts to tap the bottom of ankle bone if not laced perfectly- has not caused any digging but makes me paranoid.

    As someone that has gone from 4 > EVO > 5, I agree with all of this. The swallowtail is a little annoying, and also makes gaiters a little strange looking/awkward fitting.
