    It's no secret that I loved the Sense Ride v1. Now in its fourth version, the new Sense Ride is a near return to form taking a lot of what worked in v3 and making it better. A solidly fun, responsive trail beast ready to go the distance! What do YOU think of the new version?

      Awesome review!! Would you say the heel is lower than the 3? My main issue with shoes is my heels either slipping out or breaking the inside of the shoes because they are pointy as hell. The 3 is the first ever that I dont have this problem with so I would be looking for that high heel cap in the 4 as well...

    i have no desire to run in the sense ride 4, as i don't anticipate encountering any terrain that would necessitate a sense ride 4. but i do love me a GingerRunner shoe review, especially when he waxes nostalgic for an earlier version of a shoe.

    Kilian using it last 2020 in his adventures, the best test warranty. In V4 I can use one size less, I think due to heel collar.

    Just got these and went on a run which included a bit through a river and some muddy terrain. After I cleaned them off I was reminded that we used to use wet socks in hockey skates to protect from blisters and to loosen up the leather a bit.
    You might call it breaking in or whatever but it was important since you are balancing on a thin blade so those are built with thick plastics or metal because you just can’t naturally balance on them and need a lot of support.
    Also just walking around with them wet might help them customize to the shape of your foot.
    The one thing I noticed is that I didn’t have the same soreness and didn’t notice the same impact of other shoes.
    I’ve never had trail running shoes before so these are definitely a lot better quality but everything is as advertised so far.
    I only ran for a couple of miles but so far it’s been a great experience.

      @@LifeInTheLongRun That's tough for me to judge, I have weird feet. Obviously not going to have the room in the toe box like Altra, but if Hoka works for you I think they should be fine. Everyone has always recommended Hoka as a wide shoe and even in their "wide" shoes my arch pushes over the welt and I get blisters. I love the heel cup on them too. Most other shoes I have too much play in the heel and I get blisters. It's taken me three years to find my perfect shoe!

    These are great for (not-too-technical) hiking as well. I walked about 300kms in them on the Via di Francesco from Florence to Assisi in Italy earlier this month (June 2022) with a 8 to 11 kg backpack (depending on amount of food and water I carried for the day), and loved them. The terrain varied from tarmac, to dirt-toad, to rocky trails, to mud, and they worked well across the board. Sock-like feel on the upper with great grip and underfoot protection on rocky terrain. Haven't used any of the earlier versions, so I cannot compare, but I would recommend this model for not-too-technical (long-distance) hikes.

    The padding that was removed from the heel of the shoe has completely changed the fit for me. Even after sizing down by half a size in version 4, I can't get the same lockdown that I did in version 3. Glad to hear it's working for some people.

    • @Norry74
      @Norry74 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree, just cant lock it down, due to the heal notch, which is shame the 3s where the best fitting shoe ever.

    • @_sunvsmoon
      @_sunvsmoon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely agree. I normally wear a 10.5, 11 if it runs small, and had to order a 10 in this. It fit great in a 10 except for the heel which definitely slipped. For the price of this shoe, it has to be perfect, so I returned. I ended up with the Mad River TR2. Looking forward to the next version of the Sense Ride...

    I bought some Sense Ride 3’s last spring after Remi Bonnet mentioned they were his go to long run shoe. Having never run in any Salomon shoes before, I was MASSIVELY impressed with the grip. Although they were not the lightest shoe, I just found that amazing grip and really good mid foot lockdown gave me loads of confidence on technical trails, in particular technical descents. I annihilated PRs and Strava segments on technical downhills in the Sense Ride 3’s, and they became my go to for anything technical. Largely a Speedgoat/Torrent runner for races, but am interested to try the Sense Ride 4’s.

    I've got into trail running with Sense Ride v1. It's terribly sad we don't have similar shoes. Now for a more cushioned shoe, I just use SG3 that works flawlessly. I really wish Salomon would bite the bullet and shave off some material and put the price point at €/$100 because that would make this series a must-buy every year.

    Would be a great shoe if it had a lower drop 0-4mm. I don't like running on heels and this model feels very steep. And it's a narrow fit. That's why I went with Sense Pro 4.

      @@synlion to be honest, if you are a beginner you would probably not spend so many hours running (less than 8..12h), and so the Sense Ride will give you more ground feel and help you develop proper technique. I had one pair of 1s, 3 Pairs of 3s, and now on my first pair of 4s. Agree about the break in period on the 3/4. Didn't love them at first but after 100 miles they were amazing. The 3s fit my foot the best which is why I bought 3 pairs. The 4s in a size 10 actually weigh a few grams more than the 3s in a size 10 (unless my scale is somehow off), but they feel a bit lighter on foot. Either way, my favorite trail right now and for 120 (86 on sale) you can't beat the price.

    I got them on special so I bought myself a pair. UK 11.5 and in Orange. Very excited to try them. 60 miles though is about 96 kms. That's quite a bit of running. My Salomons Hiking boots have 200 kms on them. And that took me some time to get there. But now it makes sense why they felt so stiff and weird. I was second guessing my shoe size until they broke in. I got them in a UK 11. But didn't expect them to be as tight. I should've gotten the hiking boots in an 11.5 as well. The goretex makes the rigid. And the materials used are super hard. So I'm excited for these Trail shoes. I'll get them on Monday. Oh one thing I did with the hiking boots is throw out the inner sole and replace it with one I bought online. Way better. I'm not a fan of Salomons inners. They are too thin. And don't provide any protection or cushioning at all. The 3rd party ones are way better that I got separate.

    Love my Sense Ride 3s. It's weird, but I actually think they get more comfortable, the longer the run is. They just fit so perfectly. Th lugs don't do well for me in the mud, or on very steep stuff, so I go with Hoka Speedgoats for runs that have that. Sense Ride's best on "groomers" to borrow a skiing term. I plan to get the 4s, but I'm a little worried about the change in fit around the heel, because the 3's are so perfect for me.

    The Sense Ride 2 GTX was my first trail shoe, bought for winter running during the year I spend in Seattle! I loved it, despite later realizing I don't want gore-tex in my shoes regardless of snow. Having worn Altras since, I have fond memories of the sure-footedness of my Sense Rides; I think it was the firmness of the midsole and the traction combination. I will definitely be picking up the 4s as a summer shoe to see how it works out on my new trails in Colorado.
    Would love a review of the Terra Kiger 7, Ethan! The yellow colorway is so sharp!

    I LOVED the sense ride v1. Ran in it when it first dropped and bought new ones every year until 2021. The shoe just worked for me, perfect fit and feel, took me through my first Ultra and training for my 2nd. I recently got the S/lab ultra 3 which I’m loving but it’s just not the same ‘home comfort’ the v1 had. I contemplated the 4 but after seeing this I’m glad I avoided it. Salomon makes my favorite trail and hiking shoes and I just love the Sense Ride. The 4 is similar to the 3 in many ways and it provides just the perfect balance of cushion and stability for me. Much better than the ON Cloudultra I tried briefly that made my feet tired. BTW, I have stopped tucking the laces, just let them flip-flop and I've stopped noticing it.

    Appreciate the thoughtful review, Ethan. I've had the 2, 3, and 4s. The. 2 was great but fell apart pretty quickly, and then I upgraded to the 3, which I love. I prefer it to the 4s. That new heel cup hits my ankle in just the wrong way and caused some very weird friction in longer (6+ hour) runs. Never had that issue with the 3s. I have one pair of 3s with almost 700 miles on them, including several ultras and the Barkley Fall Classic (which will beat up ANY shoe), so that's a testament to their power. I still roll the 4s for shorter distances but Salomon keeps "messing" with this line during each update and I don't think they are ever going to please anyone with one version. I just wish they'd do a version of the S/LAB shoes with the wider "standard" fit (like the Sense Ride), so folks with wider feet could enjoy the "pro" shoes.

    It was due to your review that I got excited about this shoe and decided to go for it. I have tried all the versions (except from the 4s). Got 2 pairs of v1, one v2 and currently v3 that I use alternate with Torrent 2. After the durability issues in the upper for the v1 and v2, the v3 felt really good. Same cushioned feeling and agility. No doubt I will get a pair of the 4s later in the year, I also liking the looks of the black/red version, reminds me of S/Lab model.

    Ethan, it seems like you have a strong run with "try" in your reviews, but rarely dip into solid "buy" or "why". While I appreciate the buy/try/why, it feels like you need a scale more on a 5 point level. Sorry, but I dont have a suggestion for verbiage on what a 4 or 2 would be. I just feel that a lot of your reviews land in neutral ground.

    Really good review !
    My favorite was the SSR2. The first Salomon that almost didn't crush my toes to a pulp of blood and blue toenails.
    It was a perfect upgrade from the 1.
    As long as the distance was below 20K then they where great.
    And durable.
    The 3 was a total miss, as far as I'm concerned.
    So I'm a bit nervous about the 4.
    That long break-in periode is..., long...
    I've been wondering, if its mandatory to have sickly narrow feet to work at Salomon ?

    I am currently on the transition to running in barefoot shoes, because with normal shoes I have constant pain in my foot and lower leg when I wear normal running shoes. Since I've been wearing barefoot shoes in my daily life, it has already gotten much better and now I've already completed my first runs in barefoot shoes, but for this I first had to get used to landing on the forefoot. But I'm sure that regular running shoes like those offered by Nike, Asics, Salomon and so on will soon be a thing of the past for me and I can only recommend barefoot shoes to anyone who has constant foot problems.

    The Ride v1 was the best shoe I ever had. went through two pairs, each gave me 800-900 miles before the midsole and tread wore out. The uppers fell apart at the forefoot flex around 400 miles, but actually had no impact on the secure fit of them. The Ride v3 looked to have better upper durability out of the box, but it did not at all. The upper on the v3 came apart just behind the overlays after just 200 miles. This made an upper fit that was already incredibly sloppy even worse and created blister spots. Nevertheless I toughed it out to 700 miles in them, but they offered none of that split second softness --> responsive, solid grip that the v1 had. Even worse, the v3 was very unbalanced (probably due to way too much weight in the heal). The v1 helped me win races. The v3 mostly became my road running shoe because I didn't care about beating them up and didn't need stability. I tried the Sense Pro 4, but it didn't offer the stability that the Ride v1 gave me in snow, mud, rocks, and roots. After quite a few rolled ankles in the Pro 4 on New England trails, I now only use them on rolling dirt forest roads. BIIIIGGG fingers crossed that the Ride v4 brings back enough of the v1 to make it a worthy successor for all conditions. If not, Salomon should just bring back the v1 exactly as it was.

    How would you compare the fit to a Sense Pro 4 (trail) shoe? That Sense Pro 4 is the BEST fitting shoe I have ever found for my foot and I'm kind of hesitant to try anything else! (I even stocked up on pairs because I know Salomon might negatively change them if another version happens.)

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bought Sense Ride 2 in discount last year and sadly it's not my type of shoe. The shoe doesn't fit very well and I had problems with blisters in few places. I have ran more than 300km in them and now it's not as bad as when they were new. Maybe the problem is the bungee laces, I never know how much to tighten them and it's either too firm or too loose. The protection is nice though.

    Here in the UK we mostly can't try: it's buy, then ebay at a loss if they're no good. So the design-lurching between versions can be costly, and the damn shoes are already not cheap. Making GR reviews the more valuable, but still leaving us with a why? as we take a £50 hit for wearing a pair once in discomfort, around the garden.

    I have been using the Cascadia by Brooks for years. I am curious if this would be something a bit more grippy without being a true hiking shoe as I sometimes do trail and pavement runs which I can get away with the cascadias.

    • @lh3540
      @lh3540 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The foot feel is similar on both. The Cascadia has more padding.
      I bought these because the Cascadia 16 has an annoying toe guard bend, and this shoe has the same damn thing, but with a popping sound. The fit and lugs are similar, the padding in these feels cheaper. I'm frustrated with Brooks and Salomon both at this point.

    I'm new to trail running looking to get my first shoe that is versatile. I will use it to supplement marathon training, going on trails for 1.5 - 3 hours once or twice a week .I have tried on both the Torrent 2 and Sense Ride 4 and can't decide. Anyone have any input?

      I used both the sense ride 3 and torrent 1, about 600km-1000km in each. I like both, but was finding the torrents to cause more ankle rolls, the midsole became soft quickly, and the laces are terrible! I was taking out the sense ride for speedier and more technical trail, while the torrents were being used for more linear and casual runs. Wear on the lugs was about the same for both shoes.

    • @robertmorano2372
      @robertmorano2372 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My advice is to be honest with the types of terrain you'll be trail running on. Also, depending on what heel drops you like. For example, I have this shoe and a couple saucony trail runners, including the peregrine 10. I love that 4-5 mm heel drop and at times this shoe can feel like you're running in a high heel. Especially on flats. In addition, if I know I'm going to be out for that amount of time on a lot of roots and rocks, I'm going with the peregrine every time. The woven rock "plate" is fantastic and still gives really good ground feel. The grip in the peregrine is also tremendous in every condotion. So it inspires that confidence to really move through technical terrain. If there's a lot of flat, buffed out stuff, I'm probably reaching for these. Not to say you can't run the compact flat stuff in the peregrine's, but the "feel" is just more comfortable in the sense ride while still being plenty of a trail shoe to tackle tough sections. If it's mostly tough sections, I'm still taking the peregrine. Good luck!

      @@samlissaman3734 the sense ride 4 is a good shoe. It took me some miles to get them figured out, but I'd say my biggest gripe (and I know it's personal) is the 8mm drop. That and when I bought it, I thought it might be a little more cushioned. I wanted it to be a long run, comfy protective thing for the trails because the peregrine is more of an "attack" the terrain fast day shoe. With enough underfoot protection to just move. The sense ride is still good, just not what I bought it for and the fit is not great on my foot. But again, personal. I did switch out the insole from a pair of old road running shoes and the fit is much better. I'm slowly getting along with them and I live a mile from a ton of great forrest trails, so I do love to have something in the rotation that's decent on pavement with plenty of grip for the woods and the sense ride fits that bill nicely. I will say, the grip is great in everything I've had them in. If you like the fit and the 8mm drop, you can't go far wrong with them. Good luck!
