  • My friend Stan bought this very smart Porsche 997 S a week ago.. he bough it for the startlingly cheap price of £14K. Using the very best examples of man maths I show you that it would cost you less to own for one year than a new economy hatchback.

I fear that your boundless optimism and emotions are affecting your maths and risk assessment unfortunately ... Given the nature of the marketplace, if such exotic cars could make so much financial sense, then the market prices would go up too ...
... and in my experience, if you were the lucky one to find an exception as a daily driver, some plonker would crash into you and the Insurance company refuse to pay for repairs !
However, nothing wrong with enthusiastic optimism that brings some cheer and interesting videos of what might be possible ...

996 and 7s....beyond the IMS bearing issues early 997s like this car had the weaker 996 type external unit - I would change it regardless if there is no record of it in the history. Front struts and top mounts take a battering and normally need swapping out ,as do the front radiators and aircon condensers that weep along with the front coolant transfer pipes. The aircon pipe which runs along the drivers side floor to the can rust around the clips and leak gas - and and the coolant expansion bottle gets brittle and cracks with age. A set of decent tyres will set you over a grand too . Don't get me wrong I love 911s - but experience tells me that as a second car and a play thing - a 15 year old 997 makes sense - but as an everyday proposition a 15 year old 14k 997 would very quickly turn in to a 25k car once you've debugged it.

Hahaha 😂 this is a video highlighting all the things you tell the wife to justify buying one. I love the way you highlight comparable running cost of a brand new car to the costs of a 16 year old car,but gloss over the costs of other things that you may need on a 16 year old car. What are the costs of just disks and pads all round? That would be an ouch bill. Definitely not going to get that on a branded new car. And even if you did, D's and p's on a fiesta would be a fraction of the price. This would be the same for so many other wearable parts. Exhaust, shocks, springs, tyre's, and I dread to think what a clutch would cost, especially if it's a flappy paddle semi-auto. Come on, it's 16 years old you need to account properly for all this when comparing it to a brand new car.

£462 for front and rear discs and pads, that isn't bad for a sports car, a lot of the service items you mention are not THAT expensive on the Porsche - of course its going to cost more than the average daily driven car, its got Porsche written on it - but if you do your due diligence, there is no reason why you cannot buy and run one of these without having to break the wallet. But, if you don't have some reserve cash for repair bills, usually its around 1-2K a year - then I agree with you - buy the Fiesta instead.

When parts needs replacing it ain't fiesta money, and every morning you are concerned about the taps of death. I had a lengthy chat with Hartech before buying mind at 70k on the clock. They were very helpful but insinuated that bore scoring was inevitable at some point and 3.8 were most effected because of the bigger capacity. The 997.1 has the M97 engine which is nearly identical to the M96. The M97 uses a larger single row bearing that is not replaceable without splitting the engine case. I have owned a Porsche Boxster from 2001-4 & a 997 from 2004-16, both from new. Unless you are going to do the servicing yourself both OPC & reputable independents are not cheap. Remember that a "Full Porsche Service History" is essential if you are going to get good money come resale so unless you are running a leggy dog of a car you want to maintain a good reputable history file. Its when you need to replace parts that any comparison with Ford/Vauxhall prices fade into comparison. Example, the radiators/air con condensers are vulnerable to damage & cost £1300 to replace (2015 prices). Coolant & air conditioning pipework that are routed in the engine bay is a known failure issue & an engine out job. Tandem pump corrosion requiring replacement & due to the boxer engine, coil packs are over exposed to the environment causing cracking, engine misfire & requiring regular replacement. The 997.1 cars carry over the M96 engine from the 996: bore score is not a question of "If" but "when" it will happen because of the inherent design flaws of the unit as well as sudden failure of the intermediate shaft bearing resulting in immediate & catastrophic engine failure.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Anybody buying a secondhand 997 is not going to be thinking about resale price which makes no sense.

Always get the bores checked before you buy any gen 1 997 3.8!!! I bought one with similar miles from an auction a few years ago, before I knew about this problem. That was ok until it had done about 20 miles each time, then it would start smoking and burning lots of oil. I had to put nearly as much oil in that as I did petrol!!! I had to put it in an auction to sell it, and luckily got my money back. I recently looked at buying another one with similar miles, and the bores were scored when I had it checked. But you wouldn't know unless you you checked the cylinders with a scope. A rebuild to cure this is about £7,000!!! I would never buy a gen 1 3.8 now because of this, unless I can see proof it has had a rebuild to cure the problem. The gen 2 ones are ok.

Not to mention engine rebild, cause ims.
Not to forget new engine 997.1, Even if the ims issue is dealth with, caus sylinder 4,5 and 6 goes due to bore problems, often at a low milage.
Love the car and your reviewes. But people should know about the real costs.
Do not by 997 unless you can afford unexpected repair cost up to at least 20 000 punds.

Hmm - not sure your reasoning is quite right here. Taking a Porsche to any garage is likely to cost big money certainly compared to a Ford. Parts for Fords might not be cheap but will not be anything like the cost of Porsche parts especially with the added on 'Porsche tax.' Ford dealerships are more prevalent and Fords are probably simpler to fix, if any cars these days can be described as such. Disagree about the comfort and carrying capacity of both. Where's the hatchback facility on the 911? The 911 rear seats are still only for children - always have been. Why would you want to take a Porsche and risk parking it at a supermarket or railway car park? A constant worry about damage and theft - less of a problem I would suggest with a Ford even if, by reputation, they are easier to steal. Both the 996 and 997 had inherent design flaws, potentially terminal with the engine. Unless these have been fixed there's another potential and expensive time-bomb waiting to happen. Just read the many Porsche forums on the interweb.
As a Porsche owner (944, IB and 993) for the last twenty years I'm more than aware of the ownership perils and associated costs that's why mine is not a daily driver. Most 911s are weekend cars/garage queens, call them what you like but I don't think they lend themselves too well for the school and shopping runs whereas a Ford - most Fords - do. I'm biased but judging by many of the replies below I think most will agree.

You’ll get more than £400 off a new Fiesta too via brokers etc. Many people in the UK are allergic to older cars with higher mileage too.
The day to day running costs on the 911 are fine, it’s when things break that the pain really kicks in. As much as i like Porsche they’ve had plenty of issues with their engines, as you mentioned. You didn’t factor the inspection into your buying costs either 😜

Great vlog and i am sure it would bring more people who were on a verge of buying one into doing that... I wouldn't though be seeing the running costs too rosy, because i have one for about 5 years now (actually a 996, but technically these cars are very close) and i have few friends with 996 and 997's. So, whereas for example a Lotus Elise S2 with Toyota 2ZZGE engine cost me just to change oil, brake pads, tyres and filters before every new season and hardly ever needs anything else, the Porsche has had a full engine rebuild since i bought it. I did it while other service was done on the car and engine /gearbox were out and it turned out just about right time. Little bore scoring issue on 3.4 engine, IMS good for change, clutch, timing chains and variocam, it needed few hydrolifters, conrod bearings and main bearings i suppose and few other bits and bobs. The engine is now running on steel liner inserts and alloy pistons from Woessner. It's been done almost 3 yrs ago and runs perfect since. My mechanic, porsche specialist basically say, every M96 or M97 engine would need a sort of rebuild one day. It's cheaper to rebuild slightly precaucionary before anything bad happens to it, which was my case. The 997 S the 3.8 block is actually most expensive for rebuilds out of the range and if the block cracks or anything happens a new one from Porsche is really costly. The price for the black one from the vlog is fantastic deal ... but to want to be very honest with everyone, i'd recommend all people to keep a good cash aside to cover repair costs if things go bad. I agree though, that these are great cars. I don't regret ever buying one and not planning to replace it with anything else for long time... But let's be fair - it's not as cheap as new Fiesta :-D

@@Number27 You are welcome, Jack. I don't want to scare anyone or something like this, just thought to tell a bit of own experience. In a nutshell, i'd recommend to let the Porsche specialist do more jobs anytime the clutch needs replacing and engine is out to let the mechanic dismantle it and inspect it properly. Most likely they find some scoring on few of the cylinder bores. if found early repairs are cheaper. And a rebuilt engine from a good specialist, well documented would in the end increase the car's value as these no more depreciates. So for example, even in a situation an engine rebuild and works done i briefly described would cost 5-6 grand, part of it should be covered by car's increase market value. But best is to drive it and enjoy it. That what these are for... :-D I wish your friend has good luck with it. I have a friend of mine with same spec car, just in silver, bought it for much more money here in Czech Republic where i am from and his 997 Carrera S still works perfectly well. But he also think similar way ... at some point he will have the engine better thoroughly checked. But still i am sure, spending money on 996's or 997's is alright, these cars reward you back...

Great looking car and very capable too the 997 but I have to strongly disagree with your suggestions regarding buying a clean car at that price level and that one could dare to run one of these as a daily...if you like your cars mint (I do), I would suggest £20k as a starting point for a similar age 3.6 with 50-60k on the clock, plus budget another £5k to begin with, for immediate repairs such us engine rebuild, full suspension overhaul (shocks, bushes, wishbones, the lot), tyres and a thorough service. So yeah, for £25k you could own a very clean and presentable 3.6
I take your point about Cat S cars, however most people avoid them like the plague in the UK, which makes money spent on them, money not well spent, investment wise, when you come to sell. End of the day do you want to be throwing good money after bad on a Cat S, or a clean unmolested example? A set of good quality tyres will set you back at least a grand, not to mention other consumables. Any 15yr old car with 90k on the clock will need more than an oil and filter change and most so called 'specialists' will charge you nearly £100/hr for the privilege of having them working on your car. Bottom line, most owners that look after their cars regardless of cost, don't let them go cheap. Personally, I'd say get a sensible runaround for the boring stuff and spend more on a nice sports car, whichever you fancy, to use as a weekend toy for memorable drives, without having to worry about some cretin bumping into you during the school run.

Basically the one thing that sticks out and should scare anyone with a brain is...THIS MODEL HAS A KNOWN DEFECT IN THE ENGINE! I guess in the Europe, Porsche mechanics work for real cheap, but here in the states its quite the opposite.
Here in America, “German sports car ” translates into “license to steal” for mechanics.
The engine work he mentions can cost as much as this car does, not to mention the other things which wear out on sports cars your new mechanic WILL FIND!
If you have a hatchback budget, stay the hell away from a Porsche. The odds on you finding a perfectly running Porsche with zero expensive issues at a bargain price are extremely rare.

Fuel: £1666 (factor x2 at least)
Tyres: £1000 (actually ~£1000 each 1 year as you have winter and summer tyre sets, the good ones, ~2-3 years)
Inspections, measured on 2 year intervals will also boost estimates. Wait 3-4 years until breaks etc. and more expensive parts need servicing. However, you can keep costs "low" compared to other new cars loosing their value fairly quick but include free service for 100k.

It has appeared that the lokasil method is not constant and some cars suffer bore dcore very early. But ultimately it will wear out - as does Nikasil. However, Nikasil will last longer.
But all and all, the best value for money sports cars, definitely 996/997 belongs there with Miata and S2000. So much fun with readonable money. And there is something quite unexplanailable about the 911. It has a magic which I have not found in any other car.

I wouldn't suggest anyone actually take this advice. Buying a used Porsche is a great way to lose money, then more money....then more money. You have to know what you're doing (these are oddly quirky cars), have a cheap source for OEM parts, do your own wrenching (a lift will really help here) and then expect to lose on the resale. Horrible idea (unless this is your idea of a hobby, and that's cool). And yeah, I've been "hobbying" with sports cars for over 50 years.

Look at all the comments 🤣
It's a £70+ car it's not going to be run on peanuts. Tyres are expensive - no shit!
Engine could shart itself - yes but a proper rebuild and you have a bombproof engine.
    A Fiesta will be worth 2k in 10yrs time, a Porsche won't....

None of the maths add up (yes, Man Maths!) so if you take your tongue out of your cheek this is grossly misleading. This car is not a daily driver like a Fiesta would be. If you used this car as a daily driver expect much much higher maintenance costs! This video also assumes there is no work to be carried out following a service (see how quickly £2k is eaten up on a 2005 Porsche). Also, with no disrespect to independent garages whatsoever (many are excellent), you will erode the resale value if you don't use Porsche of Porsche Specialist. Buying a Porsche is the easy part, keeping it on the road is not! There is a reason Porsche charge over a grand for annual warranty (for cars less than 10 years old!).

Reliable ??? HAHAHA... If you want reliable then don't buy a Porche (German?). Buy Japanese or Korean ! Nissan 370Z... Springs to mind

Let’s just take a reality check, it’s a specialty car, parts aren’t cheap service intervals can be expensive, fuel and day to day running around won’t be cheap, don’t make it look like a family shopping trolley it ain’t, you’re talking rubbish, most of us buy fiestas Dacia dusters Nissan’s etc because new or newish will never give you a monster bill for repairs like that will, so don’t talk rubbish, it would have to be maintained by a main Porsche dealer or specialist and hopefully not go wrong the likelyhood of that is zero. You got rid of a 205 gti because ‘it was too expensive’ to repair remember !, you’re full of it

Respectfully, I think a Fiesta is a lot more desirable for a large bloc of the population -- long warranty, inexpensive repairs after that, reliability. Repairing a 997 is WAY more expensive, even if you do it yourself.

  • @1240enzo

It’s Porsche not Porsch !! Secondly, here in Oz you never could get a 997 for around $28k, it would cost you well over $50k plus. So no they are not a cheap alternative to a boring econobox.

The math mistake here is the Porsche "servicing" number. £179 to £445 is totally off. More like £1790 to £4450 depending on what needs servicing

I had a cayman 987.1, got bore scoring. Cost the earth to fix. The 997s suffers with similar issues.
Also sorry but they are not cheap to fix. Cheap to service yes. But any part hat is Porsche only it’s normally eye watering.

Nice car, but wouldn’t touch a Cat S as when you try or need to sell it won’t go well. A lot of car for that money but bloody pricey when it goes wrong...get a Fiesta ST instead (much cheaper to run and repair).

That car is loaded with options. It has the full leather package, sport chrono package, PASM, adaptive sport seats and the sport steering wheel. This car was probably $100-110k USD new. I owned a 2007 C2S and it was a spectacular road car.

Being a big Porsche fan I would want to consider such cars a a daily too. But It is simply way too expensive to have it taxed. Annual tax is simply nuts. How does this go in UK?

Should be able to get 20% as a minimum discount. You can get that off a BMW. You missed out tyre cost for a 911. I had a 911 and it was a nightmare. A 911 is not a 4 seater

What about a garage to put it in because it wouldn't be there for long I'm afraid ; if I would keep it outside my house. Whilst nobody cares about my fiesta outside my house. A bit too optimistic this review fella.

10% first year depreciation on a new Ford ??. Really? But repair bills are the issue on the Porker. Question is how lucky do you feel ...?

As a Porsche owner, this is terrible advice. As others have said, running costs are only "cheap" if nothing ever goes wrong. The reason these cars are "cheap" is the same reason all premium marques are cheap when they start getting old; people than can truly afford to own one will just buy a new one to get the latest model, and not suffer reliability issues of an older car; and people that can "just" afford the purchase price of one like this, can't afford to really keep it maintained and running properly, particularly when something expensive goes wrong. A Toyota or other economy car has equivalent maintenance and repair costs to their purchase price, so not a valid comparison. This will end in tears.

  • @David-tg8ku

Only a £400 discount - not realistic. MOT costs and if things go wrong it will be crippling! Porsche is great but analysis is rather flaky.
