      If the same logic were to be used on every air cooled 911, think of all the rebuilds that would need to be done TOMORROW. A little smoke here and there is not the end of the world, they ALL will eventually need a rebuild. Enjoy the car, drive it! 🙌🙌

    I’m a retired Navy Officer, retired Federal LEO….in my late 60s. When I turned 50, which coincided with the year I promoted to O6, I bought an extremely low mileage 944S2 Cabriolet. I love the car,always have-never regretted buying it-but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to wondering what a 911 would be like. My 944S2 still hasn’t tripped the clock at 70k (yep, I drive it now only during then late spring to early fall). You did a phenomenal job, with common sense, and knowledge,allaying many 997 concerns. A PPI regardless of cost, is worth it every time. And all the cars maintenance records….another plus. Bravo Zulu, brother, well done….another “value added” video. Thanks so much.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      911’s are cool, but the grass is not always greener. A poorly maintained 911 will have the new owner paying for the catch up maintenance, plus the headaches! The PPI is crucial. Btw: the 944S2 is an excellent Porsche that you can enjoy a lifetime! 💯💯🚀🚀

    Interesting approach to bore scoring. While I do not think these engine problems are common, I do not know if they are super rare. I am not aware of any type of registry that will give a true incidence for the problem. But no question, I am sure they are not as common as people think (same with IMS in previous models). Great film! Thank you. Love your productions.

      Lots of people making money out of fear. Yes things can happen, but in most cases: cars with perfect engines are being completely rebuilt. It’s business. But I think that more and more people are finding out how low the problems actually are 💯

    Just sold my 993 Targa because I prefer coupes. As I need a daily driver, I'm thinking about getting a 997. No more luftgekühlt sound sadly but the 997 seems to be the best compromise between old and new. Thank you for your informative videos!

    I have a Carmon Red 997 although regret getting a Tiptronic one. You are right - this car would be such a fun daily and like you said in another video, my older 911 is the occasional/weekend car. The colour of my car is one key reason why I still have it (otherwise it would have to be PTS for a even later model).

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Uffff! 💥 Carmon Red is insane when the sun hits it, most people think it’s a PTS color. I agree, the color is a huge factor when choosing the ‘right one’ 🙌🙌
      The Tiptronics are amazing, and they are torque converter reliable! That transmission will last the life of the car, it’s a winner in my book. While the newer PDK’s are faster, most people just drive them as auto’s…and it’s over $20k to have one rebuilt- no joke.

    Great video tho and just to say the coil pack replacement in a 997.2 costs more than the 977.1 and the IMS can be done for about £1,100.00 at a specialist. I’d replace the clutch at the same time and put some grills on the front openings to stop leaf rot on the radiators 🤔

    I have the 2005 911 S convertable Sport Chrono version and I did have the battery drain issue as I was only using the car every 2-3 months, multiple warning lights including the Management light. After i invested in a CTEK trickle charger I had no more issues. I do occasionally see a little mist of smoke on start up maybe its to do with the lack of driving. Thank you for your video.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s great that you found the issue! 🙌 It’s very common, it even leaves most tech’s scratches their heads because theirs no low battery warning light before it happens. A trickle charger is a must, even on brand new Porsche’s.

      Alternator to starter "Y" cable needs to be replaced on these cars. It's a pain to get to. Gauge was undersized to begin with and poor connections start to oxidize over the years causing higher and higher resistance so less charging and slow cranking. Trickle charger will not solve the problem but helps cover it up.

    Hey Hernan,
    Thanks for this video !
    I’m checking in from Los Angeles CA. I have a big decision to make by Saturday. I planned on picking up a very clean and impeccably maintained 06 997.1 cab from a seller I trust . However doing my research I cain t help to be scared with all the bore score and other maintenance discussions. I just want a nice convertible to use as a weekend car ! My other option is a 2013 SL 550. My heart is lean to the 911 because I love them as all of us men do, but my mind is telling me to maybe do the SL 550 although it could somewhat pricy to maintain as well it’s just not the 30k jobs everyone talks about regarding the 997.1.
    Can you or anyone in the chat advise !
    Stay blessed everyone!
    Oh the 997.1 cab has 120 k on the odometer with 90 percent of all its records. It drives strong and it didn’t have any ticking noises . Etc .
    The seller is a family man who is a police officer.
    Is it dumb or stupid for me to buy the 997 without PPI?
    Thanks 🎉

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Don’t let anyone pressure you into buying, no need to make the decision by Saturday.. A simple borescope test will put your mind at ease, this is done with a PPI.

    Bought my 2005 997.1 in Sept 2022 with 74000mls, service history and new tyres. I put 4k on it before christmas then put it away till March, since then its been a daily driver covering 10k and is now at 88k. Hasn't used any oil, had oil changes every 6k with K&N oil filters, had a conversion adapter done which gives much better oil pressure. I changed the steering wheel for a GT3 alcantara/carbon, which is slightly smaller.
    I have a 2007 z4 as well so the 911 is going away for a while, deserves holiday ! Basically though, if you have one ....USE IT !! and don't be afraid of mileage, these cars need to be driven......enjoy !!

      The conversion was an adapter to change from the paper filter to a K&N screw on. It’s available from Design911. It has large holes in to enable better oil flow through the filter. I put a magnetic sump plug in too, just to be safe. My mechanic takes a photo of the plug and oil at each oil change which I put with the service record.
      Just had a full alignment done with new tyres, makes a huge difference. This should be done every two years really, surprising what a difference it makes.

      Hey, I also have the combo 997.1 (C2 manual) and Z4 - I have the M Coupe. Love them both and while very similar performance they are very different drives. The Z4M Coupe is more raw, more edgy and less refined, but MUCH rarer. They are both the last analogue cars from their manufacturers and are both very special cars. My favourite? 911, by a whisker.

      Well just clocked up 19k this year ! And just had it’s third oil and filter change. Oil was like honey, no debris, no smoke on cold start, still smooth. Just looking at changing the alternator/starter cable due to slow turnover/ starting.
      Plugs and coil packs are to be done over winter, putting plasma coils in and exhaust, just getting a slight rattle from the cats.
      Anyway still enjoying it, Z4 is still off the road but needs to be brought back out.

    Problem with 997.2, there just isn't enough of them out there to be super picky, I spent over a year trying to find a manual that wasn't absurdly overpriced, finally gave up and reluctantly bought a PDK, which I have gradually come to like... sorta.

    • @HernanSpeed

      I know what you mean 💯💯 Most owners are holding on to them, so not many for sale. But the PDK is a great transmission! 🚀🚀👊 If you really have your heart set on a manual, most of the deals are in the winter time.

    Sounds like this guy has a lot full of questionable 997s to sell. I have a 997.1. Bore scoring is real, and not as uncommon as he says. You can scope through the spark plug holes, but you’re not getting the full picture. You may only see light scoring, but scoring start at the bottom of the cylinder and the piston is blocking that part of the cylinder if you scope from the spark plug holes. You can keep driving a car that has scored bores, just like you can drive a car without oil. Eventually something is going to break. Once the engine starts scoring, a rebuild is the only option. No magic additive is going to stop it. You can slow it down with more frequent oil changes, running better oils, fixing vacuum leaks, using healthy fuel injectors, and particular driving habits, but once it starts, it’s only a matter of time. So yes, people are doing rebuilds before the engine is completely toast, because if you run it to the end, it gets really bad. If you get out in front of it, it’s just the smart thing to do. And for those who disregard the high probability that it’s happening….ignorance is bliss. When you hear the ticking it’s time for a rebuild. But the first signs are soot on the driver’s tailpipe, increase in oil consumption. If you’re smart, you’re getting you oil analyzed Everytime you change it and if you see an increase in wear metals….it’s happening really ramping up. I love my 997.1, but I bought it eyes wide open, knowing that at some point I will most likely have to rebuild. It’s certainly not a rare or even uncommon occurrence. It’s just most people are following advice like is given in this video and blissfully enjoy but ignore the reality. How you want to live is up to you, but I’d prefer to know what I got coming.
    Also, PPFing you entire car is a waste but then it’s important to buy a 997 in the best condition possible? If these cars are going to go up in value like he says, the PPFing the whole car seems like a smart move.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Alex, 111k for the 997 is nothing….it’s just getting warmed up! 💯🚀 What will often wear is the suspension bushings, especially on the ‘S’ models with the lower profile tires. At about 150k you’ll start hearing some noises, then it will be a good time to freshen up all the rubber bits underneath with fresh ones (preferably OEM parts).
      With normal maintenance, your car will last a lifetime! 💯💯👊

    997.2TT PDK AWD is my year-round daily in Denver. Let's be precise about .1 vs .2. 997.2's don't have an intermediate shaft (IMS). Bore scoring virtually never occurs in .2's. At 40,000 miles, I do have to add a quart of oil every 2,000 miles.
    If you intend to do much driving below 45°F, you should plan on investing in a set of winter wheels/tires.
    If you're going to drive at altitude, you want a turbo. Some reports claim the twin turbos can fully compensate for peak power up to 11,000 feet, albeit with more lag. At that altitude, a naturally aspirated car loses over a third of its power.
    I'd like to put in a quick thumbs up for EVOMS ECU tuning. I gained +65hp to 600bhp with tuned firmware.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you’re driving a BEAST with that tune! 🙌🙌 Yeap, turbos are a must at high altitudes…naturally aspirated engines loose big power up there.

    Ayee, Falken Tires aren't that bad......To be honest they make excellent tires for 4×4 SUV's and Trucks. In fact they make award winning tires in that category. They are not know to make the best tires for sports cars though I guess.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree, they’re great value… I’ve had many Falken tires! 🙌🙌 However if you try trading in a Porsche at an authorized dealership, you’re going to get deducted. Brand tires are expensive, it’s usually the first place people try to save on the upkeep.

      Hi friend 👋🏻. The 996 & 997 share the same platform, the 996 C4S is actually even wider than the 997.
      -Width of 996 C4S is 72.1”
      -Width of a 997 is 71.18”
      The larger platform started with the 991, which is considerably bigger than both the 996 & 997.
