3:04 "There's no such thing as a perfect painting. We as humans make mistakes, that's what gives paintings their character". Bravo. Absolutely. Most important lesson in this video. Thank you!
I've been struggling for WEEKS painting rocks and trees to make them look believeable. Then, I stumbled upon this vid. Within the first 30 sec. I find I'm not alone in this struggle!! I thought I was just deficient in understanding a basic concept.
My mom took lessons from you years ago in Enid, Oklahoma (I think I was 16 so that would have been 40 years ago. I tied yarn on chicken wire to fashion a buffalo to put up on a mural you painted for a local restaurant. So good to find you on here!!
I have been having trouble with rocks for a long time . Your instruction is the best on the internet . Thanks for showing us how to make nice rocks. keep up the good work.
Jerry thank you so Very Very Much!!!!! I have been struggling with rocks for sometime! And with this one little lesson I now can paint rocks like a pro you are the best!!
Thanks once again Jerry. i looked at some other videos on rocks but you always show how to paint so easy and you explain it very well. i have learned a great deal from you through the many years. Thank you and everyone that help to get you on my local pbs station.
Wow...just wow.....you make it look so easy! Rocks and mountains get the best of me every time. I'll give it a try, Thank you very much for sharing this little gold nugget!
Very educational, you make it look so simple. I learnt so much in such a small amount of time, will have to watch all your videos now, never know I may even get better ha ha thank you.
Thanks Mr. Yarnell. You just described my struggles in painting. I strive for perfection then only to stumble over my own feet (or brush). I just need to cross that bridge of accepting imperfections and go with my natural instincts.
Thanks so much, you're absolutely correct, rocks are my issue..trees I just seemed to fall into..and love to do trees. Cloud formations I'm working on now and I've done a good bit of landscape with water and evening sky and they seem to find their way but I want to do exactly what you're teaching, paint with confidence that it doesn't have to be perfect...Your work is of course very accomplished but we're like minded in the concept of painting and I thank you for the validation to my thoughts and he help I receive through your videos..they're great for research...:)
You make it look soo easy. thank you so much for the instruction. You're the best I've seen. I appreciate the help. I'm new at painting and love to learn more.
8:27 "then you wrench your brush" hahhaha dude is so south. But what he is saying ref painting is so accurate. Drop any notion of perfection and just fire in the main stuff and let it kind of form some small details on it's own and then you go in later and pick out what is and isn't.
Im just beginning painting i just caaually ended on this video and i confirm...i tried to copy from a photo the rocks and i went crazy then i just decided to just go with instinct...just with real outlines...and the results was much better...the color decided the rock for me 😅

I wonder if Jerry Y. Uses more acryllic or oil paint in most of his works..
Do you paint caves
Excelentes rocas!!
enjoyed that
Very good lesson. I wonder, you’re using acrylics, and I paint with water colors. Would this technique work with water colors?
Are you using oil or acrylic ?
i love that dam movie...!
Hi Jerry Y. Are you painting in this video with acryllic or oil??
Jerry is using acrylic paint in this demonstration.
wowwwwwwwww man u're good!! thanks for the tip!
omg how do u make it look so easy
of course I do paint in oils. Do you do oils as well?
NICE ......
I got stoned and watched this over and over. This video's got it all. Grass, crack, even hookers (green). This is a marvelous exercise, folks.
Ha ha ha, cool. And yes I totally agree it is an awesome exercise.
Great
10 years on I wonder whether you can see the comments
Acrylic, correct?
it's oil
I DVR his shows on TV. On you tube he doesn't have a Time Limit.
With the addition of whites for the highlights this seems more like gouache painting.
Gostei muito .
a bit of texture may help too...
this helped alot w
Thank you for answering my doubt 1addeyrae
nice, but maybe
u should use more orange in your lightest tone.
Either you have a very angry cat in the studio or you need to eat before filming these. HEHE
TruthSurge don’t you know, real artists don’t eat:)
Im just beginning painting i just caaually ended on this video and i confirm...i tried to copy from a photo the rocks and i went crazy then i just decided to just go with instinct...just with real outlines...and the results was much better...the color decided the rock for me 😅
Jerry Yarnell paints mostly in acrylics but occasionally paints in water miscible oils.
His said somewhere that he had to much WATER on the BRUSH.!!! Sooooooooooooooooooooooo its water based paint.
Get that man a sammich
That's what I thought I was hearing as well. Lol!
too difficult...
Water. He said water. Soo.. this is acrylics. Lol.. I thought the "oil" paint looked too thin and shiny.
Can any one else hear is stomach gurgle?
hardheaded dad jokes.
hhhhooommmmmeeewwwooorrrkkkk..... awmannnn... :P

Yeah. Great. Four rocks later and it looks nothing like this. Some trick.
