Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

Perfect intro.. 😂 I'm in the middle of painting ocean and wanted to put is seashore with a lighthouse on the corner.
I got the ocean in sky and clouds easy; but to quote the teacher of the video..
"How do you paint all those rocks?!"
You are awesome. From your delivery to your technique, you are an awesome teacher. I look forward to your videos. Thank you.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Solid advice! Getting caught up in perfecting the details is a stumbling block for many artists, myself included. Sometimes less is more. Thanks Coach!
I believe that your way to paint rocks IS the right way ! Thank you
You're such a great and funny teacher Chris. Always enjoy seeing a new upload from you!
Thanks so much!
Great video I am on my way to paint ROCKS at the beach and now I feel SO CONFIDENT.
I took a trip to Big Bear, Ca. last week and found myself taking pics of rocks. People driving by had to be thinking ‘that guy is weird’! Thanks coach.
It's all the heavy metals in the paint. As long as you don't cut your ear off you'll be ok.

Hahah love hearing this!
Best coach ever!! 💕😍❤️🥰
Good one! I remember the first time I painted a trail on the Appalachian Trail and it had all the rocks!!
Greetings and love from Saudi Arabia, I'm an artist myself but I have learned so much from you, I started applying your advice on squinting the eyes but in my case I just remove my eye glasses and there it is, the picture is blurry and I'm able to see blocks of shapes and tones to start with before I put my glasses back on.
Thank you so much for all the wonderful advices you share with the world.
I just spent 3 days on a portion of rocks on my painting. Wish I saw this sooner. This channel is so amazing ❤️❤️❤️
So many rocks! that made me smile!
4:42 😂😂😂 exactly how I felt lmfao.. that was a good one! 💀
Great tip on atmospheric perspective! Love the painting as well thank you 👍
Really great tutorial Chris! This is a great reminder to keep things in a hierarchy of visual importance. Very useful! And you did a fantastic painting man! Great job 👍

Thank you. I have learnt a lot from you. Your way of explaining is excellent and all your paintings are awesome.👍🏻👏👍🏻
I just started a rocky seashore painting and it looks like a paint by number kit! I am so happy to have found your TH-cam video. It will make a huge difference in my painting. I also like your loose painting style. Thank you so much for your help.
Great tutorial, Chris......God had gifted you with with a great talents!!....painting, teaching and HUMOR!! 😂....always a joy to tune in!!! 💯💥😁
Dude, you ROCK!
Excellent work‼︎ Super talented‼︎ Thanks for sharing‼︎
Haha. I liked the joke with " the rocks immerge". Best example of how to do them I saw in Edward Munck painting. Another great one is early Kandinsky, possibly from his stay in Murnau, Germany. Basicaly is pretty much what you do here, just a diferent style, line, brushwork and choice of color mixes.
I just painted rocks and turned out to look like wildflowers. It was a black and white background. It still works. Wow thanks so much. I'll try it
Thank you for making the video it helped a lot
Fantastic tutorial Many thanks
I am dealing with this problem rn, glad to have this video to help me.

Glad you liked it!
🌠 New friend watching from nz, you have a keen eye for details. Nice painting, Cheers for sharing your tips 😎👍
thank , beautyful painting many rocks , million like s
I love how you casually drop significant facts like “remember as you paint into the distance the first colours to dip out are red and yellow, so you’ll see mostly cooler tones like blue.”
Hahaha...funny and educational thank you ❤
Awesome 👍
Rock on Bro!
The British accent tho! 😂Had to rewind twice!
You rock.
I would love to see you paint a flowing river with lots of underwater seaweed and sky reflections. Please! & Thanks
my house is decorated with your paintings! my house is turning to a gallery.
Thanks for just straight talk, not above your head artist lingo. Will try your method and join your Instagram page. Thanks for the info!
Spent fifteen minutes listening for someone trying to lure you to his site
cool
"How do you paint all those rocks!!!!!????? I just want to watch a never-ending loop of that...
So I am old at 42 while rockin’ my Facebook? Gasp!
Just kidding. You had to know someone would give you a hard time about that. 😂
Seriously, the video was good advice as usual. Your videos are helping me transition from watercolor to oil. I appreciate them a lot.
I just realized I was listening to one of your other videos (from 2 months ago) about social media and commented on this one instead. Apparently I am already senile too. 😂
The dangers of binge watching TH-cam.
Sir please make a videos for clouds painting
I have watched a few of your informative videos. Are you saying, 'drawl and drawling'? lol. Sorry but always catches me :) Great sense of humor btw.
"When painting lights start with the darkest light"
Hi Chris. I have a question. do you have any tips on picking a frame for a finished painting? Cheers
mountain painting, please.
tip 1 and 2 are known as the fight club tips to painting...
Thanks for another informative video Chris. I always hate painting rocks (and trees for that matter), but you did a fantastic job here. I guess one question I have is about the shadows. They seem to have different values within themselves which I think is hard to portray. Any advice?
check out the full tutorial on Patreon lol It's all about minding your values. There are highlights within the shadows but you have to make sure they are lighter but not too light that they don't read as in the shadows. This is why blocking out the the major values first makes it easier because as you work those lighter values in the shadows you know how far you can push them
Yet another way to get stoned! Thank You, Chris!
Wondering how you decipher if you will need cad red or QM.
What do you mix with your paint? How do you apply the medium
squint, drawing a not single rock, get rid of detail, see light and dark, blue, dark sienna, mapping the dark shapes, find the darkest dark in the rocks, general shape of the rocks, identify, darkest light, dark to light, shadow and highlights, back and fort,
I’m in that struggle painting Peggy’s cove with soooo many shades and tones 🤦🏻♀️
'You don't want curved strokes because rocks aren't curved' 7:42. I see many curves in the finished painting.
for the squinting tip you might try a few beers
Hi, just saw your video (great tips, some of which I already use!), but I was wondering if you could be more specific in the brushes from Rosemary Co. you use. The link just goes to their home page. I'm always in search of good flat brushes!
MY BRUSH SET - www.rosemaryandco.com/the-painting-coach-brush-set?u=c78f9d
My oil paint gets sticky and dry. I cant get any brush details and dont know whats wrong. I use walnut or linseed oil and wipe my canvas then paint over it. What do you suggest i do? Thanks
rocks. one of the very few things i am good at. I'm near sighted so i just take my glasses off.
It does help eliminate details! I find squinting still helps to find values though, something about seeing through eyelashes grays down what you see and helps with the chroma lie:)
I enjoyed your video, but i couldn’t understand the link to your full version. I have been trying to paint rocks for the last two years. My friends make fun at me. They call me the “rock lady”. Every now and then I get it right, but I sure would like to see your full version. Can you send me the link. Thanks L Rocamboli

LoVe the accent. LOL!
I'm British and that was actually a good British accent. Bit posher than I talk though lol
Lmfao the ending hahahaha
Music at 2:10?
I say old chap!!!
how is geometry dassh making more realistic rocks
It is funny but when I squint my eyes I see more detailed. Really. :) I do see less detailed when I close 1 eye and look with the other.
Rule #1 and #2, I don’t have to squint! I just take my glasses off.
Me... scribble and polish to rock.
Horrible!
Thanks!
Huh? Could you be more specific? Because I don’t know see anything horrible here.
I couldn't grasp a thing.. followed you till end but it turned out so bad. not so beginner friendly 🥹😭
Try again, no secret, only repeat and practice
Hey, Chris!
Thanks for posting your videos🙂👍
It would be interesting to see you paint a nocturnal painting, with focus on the moon and the moonlit clouds. Not an easy task to make that moon "pop" and getting the cloud values right.
Keep up the great work, Chris.
Greetings from Norway
