Thank you so much for explaining what to look for and not just painting a rock and expecting me to copy you (and then call it a "tutorial")!! Much appreciation from this Aussie beginner ❤
This was useful, I'm in the middle of a painting and guess what? I have alot of rocks to paint and was not sure how to tackle this. Now I can paint these with a bit of confidence.
Excellent instructional video! Painting rocks is an arduous experience for many of us, but your demonstrations and suggestions are so very helpful and to the point! Thank you so much! I truly appreciated this rock painting study!❤
I have seen many artists but this is commendable Because Teaching is a very tough task and this vdo is very good for learners and bigginers Angle of light is very important Which is not taught or explained by maximum Regards to you Remain blessed ma'am God bless you
You're terrific, thank you! I'm a semi-talented artistic type (my career was in music, I'm good at drawing, etc), but painting is new to me and this week, painting rocks has been frustrating! I know the basics, about values and so forth, but can't get it together very well most of the time. Your instructive and personable presentation has helped a good deal. Very appreciated and looking forward to more from your studio! 🎨
This is such good information, thank you for uploading this video, i have always had issues painting rocks so this is a fantastic tutorial for me personally!
It was lovely to watch you paint! I was looking for someone who proofes that painting rocks isn't hard. I wasn' t disappointed. And thanks for the joke in the beginning :)
Wow. Thank you so much. I've been teaching myself to paint and couldn't figure out how the artists figure out where to darken and lighten. This helps bunches.
I don't know how anyone can dislike this video I learned alot about painting rocks and she shows from start to finish thank u so mutch and she is taking time from her day to teach people that love art I know I do
Wow, you hit the nail on the head--again. I tend to be somewhat technical-thinking (former math guy), so breaking it down logically for us really makes this easier. As you say, you observe rocks, then paint them, not from theory; but having a 'construct' to frame things with sure helps. Thank you, Dianne ... this student really appreciates your work here for us.
I'm a bit late to the party on this one, but this video has just saved a painting from being scrapped off the canvas. Those medium values are absolutely critical. You don't realise HOW critical until you put them in.
I can’t thank you enough for this! I’ve been stuck on painting Pride Rock from Lion King for hours and couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t reading as a rock. It’s my lack of knowledge of the light source and shadows, and the entire time I thought it was my colors!
I like the setup you have to hold up your canvas with the paint below. Can you tell me where you got that from? I'd like to get something like that. Thank you for sharing this video with us.
Very good lesson in how to paint rocks. I had trouble with these, but now you have shown me how to think about them to get the right effect. Thank you! New subbie, here!
Rocks a hard! And they’re everywhere… paint an old dugout canoe pulled out of the ocean, surrounded by rocks! Painted a fishing net on a wall, surrounded by rocks! Waterfall… all rock with a bit of water! Rocks! Painted a beautiful arch of flowers… over cobblestones and down a rock wall! Thank you!
There is always a light source, that is if it's not totally dark. On a sunny day, sun rays come down at the angle at which the sun is located and strike surfaces before they bounce onto other surfaces. BUT on an overcast day, the clouds disperse the rays into many different direction so the overcast sky itself becomes the light source. This causes a dulling of colors and a slight reduction in value contrast.
I always have a problem with shadow and defining where the light comes from . Even when i have a sun in my picture paintings. how to find it please? I trust your expertise to explain this matter to me please. Thank you
In a few weeks, I will have a new book coming out that will show you just that. My goal for the book is to show people how to see shadow, how to plot it as a pattern we call notan, and how to use that pattern to compose a painting. Your best bet is to squint and consciously look for patterns of dark. It might help to watch Quick Tips 118, 140, 204, and 207.
Marie, it is a matter of creating sharp edges with value contrast for more angular rocks and creating gradation for more rounded ones. Regardless of the medium, the principle remains the same. Beyond that, it is a technical issue of what to do with a particular medium to create sharp edges vs gradation. In watercolor, wet on damp will create a wonderful gradation as will wet on wet whereas wet on dry will create sharp edges.
In the Studio Art Instruction Thank you Dianne. I will give it a go! I will try a variety of rock shapes. I started my first oil practice also! Let’s just say I won’t be posting it but I learned a lot and will work my way through your exercises! I also ordered 3 of your classes and will be adding to them. You are a wonderful instructor. I love starting each day with your videos! Thanks again for all you do

The rig I use for teaching is the Sienna Pocade Box. I might add that in my main studio, I have my palette set in front of and underneath my canvas.

You are AMAZING!
Thanks.
Your demonstration of conveying rock structure was great! What colours were used for the different values in your rocks?
I used a combo of Ultramarine blue and Rembrandt Transparent Oxide Red to create the neutral, the managed the value variations with Titanium white.

This was very helpful. However, what if it is a cloudy or misty day and there is no light source?
There is always a light source, that is if it's not totally dark. BUT on an overcast day, the clouds disperse the rays into many different direction so the overcast sky itself becomes the light source.
