Hi Peter, your video showed up randomly on my TH-cam feed, just a facinating painting and insightful tutorial.thank you. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
You have thought to me how to let back every single rule I had learn about painting, the way you use the black color, the pure yellow under the scene, all of this is absolutly new for me, thanks for sharing your talent and experience as an artist. I'm going to get back to watch this video once again, it's amazing.
I can understand you better when you did the bottom in yellow, so that's good. Talking about mistakes being part of the process you are so right. Just finished a painting and had to it at least 3 times until it was right. I'm not a pro as you are I've only been painting for 6 years. I am self taught but with so much help from tutorials to advance myself as an artist. I have sold 10 paintings thanks to artists like you, who share their talents. I did not realize you used oil I do acrylics only due to many allergies.
Everyone is self taught in painting and at the same time we all teach each other unless you live in a remote place as a hermit who never went to school or a gallery or library and has no internet. If you go and study art at a formal educational institution they teach you art history and theory and give you access to studios and equipment and you will have to meet assignment briefs and be assessed on whether you are meeting the criteria. In addition you will be part of group crit sessions. But no one stands by your side teaching you how to draw or paint. You can get as much advice from a workshop or video.

Very nice. I feel lucky finding your page. After scanning your posted videos, I noticed that a lot of your paintings are w/ acrylics. I'm beginning my painting journey w/oils, but the difference, other than drying times, seems to be about the same from my limited experience. Again, thank you for your time and generosity.
Hi Peter. Agreat tutorial on dramatic skies and getting the glow point of light effect it is very interesting how you do the clouds and one I want to get into. Im new to art having just retired just setting up a studio getting ready but your ease of painting is great as you say leave it come back and keep trying. Cheeers 👍 My palette is a ceramic floor tile fixed to a 15mm piece of MDF, I have a couple, the one in the video hooks on to my wall easel. ( weighs a ton 😂)
I know what you mean, if you look at my reference photo for the sky, the sun is low, out of sight and to the right, it highlights the clouds in the sky from there 👍

Yes I had that problem - It took quite a bit of practice for me to loosen up, great fun though, I will probably do a tutorial on how I did manage to loosen up 👍
It comes from the right and it lights up the clouds from behind in the centre of the sky, I know it looks unusual but if you look at the reference photo in the video this is actually what happens. 👍😊
I only ever use 3 mediums, oderlous mineral spirits to dilute oils for for first coat underpainting if needed, linseed oil for slower drying, original liquin to speed up drying. hope that helps - lots more info in videos on my channel 👍😊

Hi Peter. Enjoyed this very much, thanks. A very dramatic painting. My only question is why are the highlights on the trees on the right when the light source appears to be on the left?
@@iainwilson7054 I know exactly what you mean, however the original photo I took of the sky shows exactly this, the sun was low and bright to the right of the photo, but it catches the clouds over to the left. Hope this helps 👍😊 (see original reference photo on video)
@@gillbawden You’re quite right about this, however if you see the reference photo the light is actually coming from the right, and then it highlights some of the clouds on the left, that’s why I highlighted the trees on their right side. Hope that helps 👍😊

It's actually a floor tile (8mm thick, 30cm x 60cm) which I have glued onto a piece of MDF (2cm thick) quite heavy but I prefer a solid palette that is easy to clean
