    My current dog LOVES playing with other dogs at the other park. Everytime she sees one of her puppy friends she gets really excited, so I'm thinking about getting a second dog.

      Same situation, our dog is very friendly to other dogs in the park, but we have brought a new pup today who is super stable and doesn’t bother our older dog (2 years). She growls at her because being at home with a new dog is a different thing.

    We got a second dog 1 year after the first. The 1st was doing so well (still is) and the second dog had 'issues' but our first dog has helped her so much. Also as we were a little nervous, we applied to Foster her to see how it went and obviously she stayed with us.

    My wife and I are in this discussion now... she wants a second dog purely because she feels guilty for leaving him home all day while we work and thinks he would be happier with a companion, however, the dog (low energy 3 year old) is not showing any behavioral issues that are noticeable and seems to be ok with our situation. He does bark at the doorbell and people walking their dogs past our house if he is in the backyard but we are working on that and he is showing improvement. He is a good walker and not showing signs of anxiety. If anything, he may be a bit bored but his entire life he has never shown any interest in playing or acting out and is generally a low energy, mellow dog ... he just likes to walk, cuddle, sleep, hang out near one of us but doesnt need to be right beside us either. I would hate to bring in a second dog and have things go wrong. If we did, I would suggest looking for another low energy, back of the pack type dog. I dont think we should try to bring in a higher energy dog in an attempt to change the dog we already have.

    I'm very undecided to get a second dog. :/
    But not because to treat all of my first dogs issues, it's more like, i want to increase my family.
    I want to get him a friend to cuddle and play with him, taking walks together and enjoy and share this experience together. Someone who speaks his dog language..
    *sigh*

    Such a great video. This is what I was looking for. Everybody else wants to only talk about the obvious, extra expense, time or messes. Duh, thanks for nothing!
    My current dog is 7+ and I have had since she was a 16wks. A second dog MUST be a quality of life improvement for her. I'm not sure it would be after watching your video. Thanks!

      I have the same concerns! My current dog is 10. She loves other dogs at the park, but I’m nervous should wouldn’t actually like a sibling dog in her house all the time…

  • @caleyday2600
    @caleyday2600 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Boom! And actually, considering the idea that it’s totally possible to mimic the first dogs behaviour too sooooo you could end up with two fearful dogs? Would that be right?
    I know Murphy mimicked Bindi ALOT when he first came here - he was very nervous and she of course was very self assured and confident. But as you said, that didn’t solve Murphy’s problems with being nervous and unsure of his new home ❤️
    Such a good video! And yes! Consider the time constraints! Two dogs is literally double the work... especially if they are two with individual needs, likes, dislikes and such.

    • @getacalmdog
      @getacalmdog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! Double trouble. haha. And yes, in theory a dog could imitate a fearful dog. This is practically less likely, but in theory could happen.

    My dog grew up around my families dog s before I moved out and now she tries to play tug with my roommates cats 😭 I play with her a lot and walk her everyday but I think she is missing that doggy play partner. She still gets to see my families dogs every week but I still think she’s craving a companion.

    Love you videos Jenna! I accidentally alleviated my dog's separation anxiety when I got cats, so she's never really "home alone", but I definitely would not recommend it as a solution because, like you said, you need to "treat the underlying issue"!

    I had this idea to get another dog this year. Last year i got myself maltese, he is very happy and in general very good dog. I am working from home so he is with me 24/7 which is not so good, but I can't help with that..it is life.
    I was thinking to get another maltese (obssessed with that breed 🙈) because i was thinking maybe my dog would be happier with one more dog in the house, but after watching this video you helped me realize it is not quite sure if he is going to be happier, since he is used to be only with me. Maybe he would get a bit jelaous...it is a big risk.
    Very glad I found your video. Thank you :)

    My dog I think is really good when we are home and he gets plenty of exercise but I think with his breed he is definitely a pack dog. He’s a kind of hunting dog that is supposed to chase prey in a pack. He’s more submissive and I’ve been doing research on a breed that will suit him well. We planned on getting a second dog as I don’t think a second dog will be all that much more work since I spend at least 3+ hours a day walking training and playing. He does have some separation anxiety I think or he just gets bored during the day leading to destructive behavior. It doesn’t happen often but it does happen enough. I’ll watch your separation anxiety video but will probably still get a second dog as I think for his breed it would help enrich his life. I just have to find the right breed

    dogs can fight be careful
    never do a quick introduction
    and it can take up to 2 months before they play nice buy a dog muzzle and a leash plus crate allow control and short
    interactions increase over time
    you or a your new dog could get bit
    if not controlled

    I live in miami and it's very hot down here. I work at home and spend plenty of time with my dog. I do the best I can to get her time out sometimes it's cut short because of the heat. I notice that display giving her toys and bones she tends to be pretty bored in the apartment. She loves playing with other dogs and i'm strongly considering getting her a puppy to keep her company. That way she can have a permanent best friend to play with. She has no anxiety or anxiousness she's pretty much a perfect dog in my opinion. I just feel guilty seeing her laying around the house all day doing nothing. What are your thoughts?

    we got this new puppy and she’s been really good but misbehaving recently without any other second factors so i believe she might be lonely and she does chase her tail and bite herself a little. we were previously cat owners so we didn’t realize she might need a friend 😭

    My dog is dog reactive when he’s on leash
    He goes to the dog park about 3-4 times a week and doesn’t have any problems, i did notice his dog reactivity completely disappears after a day at the dog park and im always relieved and think ive cured it. But nope the next day if he sees another dog
    Immediately starts barking and lunging bc he wants to play and im thinking if he has a dog buddy at home he wont be so compelled to lunge at strangers dogs bc he can just play w his buddy
    Am i delusional?? HELP before i make a bad decision

    Hello. Im in difficult position because I used to have two dogs (11 years each) living in my parents house which is 5 acres of woods and grass but no other animals. Thing is one of them died and now theres only one left. The house is sometimes empty and you have only one person going from monday to friday to work on the gardens.
    I try to go at least 4 times a week (is a 1 hour drive from my apt) but now i have to travel outside of my country. Im worried about my dog even if shes old and sometimes she just spend the whole day sleeping. I still feel sad that shes not going to see me and that theres going to be days that she will receive short visits. Shes very friendly but at her age shes really chill. We do have other animals around like wild birds, rabbits and neighbor dogs (they bark eachother once in a while).
    I guess shes used to that life since shes always been there but I dont know. Im worried :/ . I thought about bringing another dog but my veterinary says that since she haves an autoinmune illness plus the stress of sharing her space with a new dog might do more harm than good. Same with taking her to other place.
    Whats your advice on this?
    As i Said, she will see someone at least for an hour each day and she will see someone from monday to friday at least a couple of hours.

    My dog is a Siberian Husky and we have tried to stop the isolation/separation anxiety for 1.5 years, but the howling hasn't stopped when we have to leave her home alone. I've tried supplements, making her tired from exercise and nothing seems to help. Everyone I have spoken to that "knows" about the breed all says the same thing. "They are pack dogs and the only way to solve it is get a second dog, preferably another husky." Your thoughts?

    My rescue dog had seperation related behaviours before I got him... when he moved in with me (and my three other dogs) 80% these behaviours completely went away!
    So I love that you mention both sides!! 😁🤗

    You think a better alternative to getting a dog is hiring a stranger to go into your home to spend time with your dog ? That’s way more expensive than getting another dog and they won’t be there all the time. You’re going to need cameras for your house now too because you’re letting someone into your home. Do they have a key?
    Good video, but this one was a bit odd.

    I know that you probably wont get a second dog when you have Max, but if you were to get one, what will most likely be the reason?

    • @getacalmdog
      @getacalmdog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll get a dog many years from now, once Max has moved on. And then it will probably be about 1 to 2 years later and I'll get a second dog. I actually prefer to have a multi-dog home. It's just not responsible to do that with Max.

    going to doggy care is not good. I sent my puppy there once on 'Meet & greet' on video I could see he was so bored and the staff really don't do anything as they show on their marketing video. Then he got cold and went on antibiotics. My neighbor also thinking of not sending here puppy any more.

      Unfortunately, many dog daycares are not conducive, safe environments. But when it comes to the dogs' perspective - it just depends. Many dogs actually NEED their daycare time to feel fulfilled. If they lose out on that time, then they get depressed.

    My dog is a 15month old beagle x harrier. He adores other dogs and loves playing, but he definitely is a bit insecure. He has some separation anxiety but we did a lot of separation training and it is somewhat under control. Obviously I'm still working from home so I don't get as much of a chance to leave him alone much. But I'd definitely like another dog to keep him company and raise his confidence levels... But I'm scared of opening a whole can of worms
