    We had three Labs at one time years back if you can imagine. You know how joyful and full of fun they are so imagine times three. We will never be without a dog and now have one yellow Lab, Major, who will be 6 months June 23. We would not change a thing about the journey with our dogs. Vacations, the beaches, family gatherings and walks would never be the same without them. The hardest part of having these great creatures in your life is the letting go when it is time. But, they don't go really, but simply sleep in your hearts.

    I had two dogs one died in march and the difference has been so much! I loved my both dogs but managing two large breeds at least is too much! They are lovely and caring but the management is too hard I must say in case of just one dog management is quite easy. I would have still preferred that my dog hasn't died but the reality is that managing only one dog is so much less work

  • @TheWrigle
    @TheWrigle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    I feel like a lot of the cons aren't as big a deal if you have smaller dogs. I have always been a fan of the 40-55lbs range range dogs as they can still keep up with larger dogs, but aren't nearly as hard to manage. Handling two 45lbs dogs is very different then trying to handle two 100+lbs dogs.

    Ron and Amy, we retired not long after we lost our beloved Beagle, Roscoe. As a result of retirement we have decided to address our bucket list and do some great trips, such as our long wished for trip to Alaska. So, as much as I would like another Beagle in our home, I will satisfy myself with all of the fantastic Schmidt photos, hanging on our walls. Take care of yourselves and those two great doggies.

    I needed this. My decision is a lot clearer now as I was struggling with most of those cons you mentioned. The pros outweigh for sure though. I couldn't help notice the look in your eye, Ron when your wife mentioned that you can walk two. I got the feeling that it might still be a challenge for you, but you see it as just part and parcel for your their well being as well as maybe developing your own patience. I really enjoyed this video. You both are great!

    For the first time in my life only have one dog and I can not wait to pick up our Dutch Shepherd next week ! Training, training, training so you can walk the dogs easily together. Travel, pet/house sitters are less expensive than kennels and charge the same for one or two or three dogs. Personally we purchased a travel trailer that accommodates us and 2 big, healthy, active dogs :)

    I have 4 dogs. 1 Pitsky puppy 2 month (Husky/Pitbull Mix), 1 German Shepard Mix puppy 6 months, and 2 small chihuahuas 10 years over. It's tough but the amount of love these dogs give them is so worth it. I recommend most new owners only get small dogs and get only 1 DOG as a start. I started off with the 2 chihuahuas and then got the GS puppy. Then finally the Pitsky puppy. It's so worth it in my book since these dogs will love you to death if you take care of them.

    We just added a new puppy to our lives. We now have four Boston Terriers. It has been fun and frustrating. The puppy has taught the 4 year old how to chew the corners of the kitchen cabinets and the 5 year old has taught the puppy how to shred a training pad into very tiny pieces! Our oldest and tiniest Boston is blind and has seizures but is the happiest girl. Life is good at our house.

    I recently got a second dog, both Samoyeds.
    The older one is five y/o, the second one three month. I am very happy with my decision. I expected problems with resource guarding or jealousy - but there are zero.
    The older dog is very gentle and caring with the little one. Sometimes he is annoyed when the puppy jumps on his head or pulls his tail too much, but overall he enjoys the new company.
    Of course I need to walk them seperately for several months to train the puppy.
    When you consider a second dog, wait until the first one is grown up and properly trained,
    A third dog is a whole different story - then you have a pack and there can be complicated conflicts between the dogs (two buddies and one outsider).

    I love your videos - thank you, always a highlight! I have always had multiple dogs, not sure why, but somehow dogs in need found their way into my household. However, a year ago I had 2 very bonded elderly dogs, a pug and a yellow lab. That lab was the most beloved dog I have ever had. I knew that the loss of one would most likely mean the loss of both, so for the first time in ages I found myself searching for a dog. I found a young yellow lab on Craigslist that was in need of a home (darn it if that cute ball of fluff didn't grow!), and he was a perfect fit for us. Sadly, my old lab was the one to break my heart, and dangit if the pug just would NOT play with the rambunctious youngster. So... back on the hunt I went for another dog. Word got around, and another young lab, black this time, moved in. The young boys adore each other. They give each other what I truly cannot. I am active, but not to the extent that they need it. I cannot chase a flung ball 200 times in a row, (I can barely throw it that many) but they can. The pug sits by me watching and is so grateful that they leave her alone. I might add too that on your list of negatives, if you take in rescue or rehomed dogs, you take on some issues. It can be a challenge and frustrating. However, it's also on the positive list, as once you get those issues
    figured out and get past them - what a joy to see the dog blossom once they know that their world is now safe and full of love!

    • @ron.schmidt
      @ron.schmidt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! We're not experts - just giving our opinion - it really depends on your Yorkie. If your Yorkie loves other dogs, likes to play with other dogs and is not jealous when you or someone from your family is petting or playing with other dogs, then it should be ok to get a second dog. Just remember that a Goldendoodle may grow to be much larger than the Yorkie, which may be hard for an aging Yorkie and Doodle who wants to play a lot.

    We have two chocolate labs a year apart in age. The older one is the classic,responsible older child, always wanting to please and not be in trouble. The younger one is the mischievous younger brother,(you know the one who will jump off the garage roof with an umbrella, break an arm and think he's had the best day ever). And he's so charming you can't really get upset with him. Having two dogs is great! They bring such joy, laughter and companionship to our home, we can no longer imagine a life without two dogs!

    My pug is about to turn 2 and he is absolutely bonkers! he has so many hilarious quirks and is so clingy and always wants to play with us and wants us to chase him when he has things in his mouth that he shouldn't. We have recently been given the opportunity (possibly our last one) to get one of his siblings (there's a good possibility that this will be her last litter). My boyfriend and I both want another dog but had only planned to get one much later. I however am concerned that if we have another dog, that our current one's personality will change and that he will no longer be quirky and play with us and will rather do all these with the new dog. Does anyone know from experience if this happens? I know it seems silly but he really is so so special to me and I'm so scared at the thought of him no longer being as interested/attached to us.

      Horrible idea Number one two puppies that are the same age even within six months of the same age even if they're not exactly from the same letter even if they are opposite sexes will eventually fight and the divider no If you can divide it they can undivide it if into a rageful fight My experience and research and history all show prove and reiterate the fact that their mates even if again they're not the same whatever age etc So liter mates . both within 6 months age range should not be kept in the same kennel should not be kept in the same account with the divider sometimes should not be kept in the same kennel in the same room depends on the stage of puppyhood and the age of they
      dog puppies together is a bad idea any way you look at it

She is a nervous and anxious dog who hates being left alone and starts shaking just at the thought of being left alone (which happens very rarely as mum is at home most of the time) For the last year approximate we have thought of the idea of a second dog for her and right now are trying to inform ourselves as much as possible. We would be considering getting another female cocker puppy but we really don't know if this could be the worst or the best decision we've ever made. Our current dog isn't the most sociable dog, she is quite choosy with what dogs she says hello to. Last week she met a cocker pup when on a walk and said hello but wasn't extremely interested but she also was not frustrated by the pup either. We really don't know what to do because we want the best for our current dog and if that meant getting a second dog we would do that but only if it was the right thing for her. Sorry for the long paragraph!! Erin x

      Hi Erin! Thanks for the message. Our dog Moses is like your cocker spaniel - anxious and nervous - but mostly around people. We thought getting another dog would be helpful for him and it has been - but Moses loves dogs. All dogs. We're not experts but if you're looking at getting another dog, we think going with a breed of dog that has a different kind of personality that is more outgoing/friendly could be best. Some more historically friendly breeds are Labs and Goldens but there are many more if you do a little research. Good luck!

    Hi my male 5yro lab is father of 9pups can you advise if we should take a girl or a boy obviously there will have to be neautering or castration wondering what is best for less sibling rivalry when the pup gets older or do you think it depends on personality of the dog's?

      It is a great question to ask the breeder who has the puppies. I am sure they have been asked question this before. Congrats on the new puppy!

    • @ron.schmidt
      @ron.schmidt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's important to decide if you are really ready to commit to having two dogs and think about what your life will look like with two dogs. Questions like: Will two dogs be manageable for me? Can I afford it? How will my other dog deal with a new pup in the house given how he/she is with other dogs? If there are real concerns, you need to think through those first.

    I need to either rehome my dog or get a second 1 i feel so bad i don't have time for him I been contemplating on getting a 2nd dog so they can keep each other company but now I feel like someone else would take better care of him

    • @ron.schmidt
      @ron.schmidt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What a hard decision. We're not experts but if you don't have time for one, you most likely don't have time for two. Is having a dog walker come or sending your dog to doggy daycare a few times a week an option? Our last option would be to rehome the dog - but if that is the case, you could start by reaching out for friends or family to see if there is interest - or contact a local rescue to see if they could help in placing your dog.

      @@ron.schmidt i live paycheck to paycheck. I broke my leg and been out of work for over 3 months now. I cant walk him and feel bad that he is always alone. I used to walk him everyday and since he played with other dogs and got some interaction at the park i didn't feel bad. I had him for almost 3 years and always thought i would get another dog and they would keep eachoher company but luckily didn't get around to getting a 2nd dog. When i start working im going to have to work very long hours because i am in really bad credit card debt right now. Not long hours like regular people but literally like 12 hours a day. I always been a germaphobe and thought a dog will help me stop being so weird. When he was a puppy i wasn't grossed out by him but the more poop and pee i cleaned the more gross stuff he did at the park like sniffing other dogs butts and poop and pee the more grossed out i got lol. If another dog peed on a tree or something he will literally stick his face in it sniffing it and its so disgusting. I had him for almost 3 years and its really hard for me to push myself to find him a better home. I know he will be better off hopefully i can find someone with another dog that knows how to take care of dogs because its really hard for me.

      The odds are stacked against this working out. The Chow will never back down to the Rottie and will end up getting seriously hurt or killed unless the chow which is older damages the rottie whist it is still a pup. Either way, this will end badly.

    I got a 'friend' for my 2 yr old husky....big mistake. She dominated him and bothers him a lot and he doesn't appreciate it. Sometimes he enjoys playing with her in the yard but often time his tail is tucked between his legs and he's running to me to save him from her constantly biting his neck. She has caused scabs on his neck from her biting.....but yet he's never corrected her bad behavior, ever. He would play so gently with her as a puppy inside the house, but outside he would get too rough with her sometimes when she was really little and hurt her, she yelped and whined and I thought he broke her leg....she was fine eventually though. The one time he hurt her I yelled at him....from then on, he never corrected her because he was afraid he'd get into trouble. He's extremely sensitive dog and his feelings get hurt, no joke. If you tell him to get off the bed upstairs, he won't just get off and sleep in the floor, he will leave the upstairs completely and go to the farthest corner of the house downstairs and won't come back even if you call him to come back. He is still afraid If someone yells or gets upset...doesn't have to be at him ..about anything. Sometimes my husband is talking aggressively at his brother on the phone and my husky thinks he's in trouble and he'll come jump in my lap for comfort. We hardly yelled at him that much as a puppy and we don't even fight....that's what is so weird. He's with me all day and I am really quiet person. He gets babied a lot though because we have no kids and I work from home full time andy husband works from home a few days a week.

      Thanks for sharing your story. Agreed and great points. It's hard because every dog has its own personality. We're not experts but it sounds like the girl is the Alpha and wants to make sure the other dogs know it. And, we get it about having a timid dog. Our Moses is timid too but our second dog didn't assume the alpha role.

  • @just-another-face-in-the-crowd
    @just-another-face-in-the-crowd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Short story:
    1) Don't get a second dog or third dog if you think you're getting a playmate for your other dogs. Don't assume a second dog will act like the others. Just like kids, they all have their own personalities and behavior traits. Don't assume your other dogs will like the new dog they may not even get along and you may end up causing more stress for your existing dogs.
    2) Really consider the cost! boarding food and vet will be double or triple depending on how many more you get. To board my 3 dogs is over $100/day and you pay extra for walks and play times! And double or triple the food. My last 7 day boarding bill with walks cost us $1,060!
    3) Traveling with more than one or two dogs is very difficult and most apts or hotels will only accept 1 or 2 dogs. Many apts or hotels have weight limits or 25, 50 or80lbs or even breed restrictions!
    4) Consider the amount of poop that you have to clean up in the yard and the amount of hair and dirt tracked in by one dog and then double or triple that.
    5) Also if you have too well-behaved dogs maybe just stick with that and count your lucky stars because the third one could turn your world upside down and be a nightmare dog that requires constant attention.
    6) Walking multiple dogs is very hard and watching 2 or 3 dogs at the dog park is a lot of work. I am a helicopter dog mom and stay right by them. I use choke collars on my huskies because otherwise they will rip your arms off. With their choke collars they are ok but still pull a little. Walking my little dog with them is very difficult so often times I leave her in the house and she has to be walked separately. I can't barely walk all 3 by myself. I would need my husband to come with me. If another unleashed dog approaches you when your hands are full you will have a VERY difficult time controlling the situation I'd something goes down.
    Long Story:
    I have 2 huskies (ages 3 and 1) and little 7 yr old Tibetan spaniel mix. I got the Tibetan spaniel mix in 2016 when she was 2, she's a rescue from Korea and she was already potty trained and she is extremely well behaved and submissive with people...she tolerates other dogs but is a little grouchy is they want to engage her for play.
    When my first husky was 9 weeks old my little dog was 5yrs old. She played with him a little when he was a puppy but when he got bigger than her she stopped playing with him and just ignored him and growled at him when he tried to play with her. He's a very sweet loving dog, very well behaved, he learned from her to be quiet and not to chew on anything and to be sweet....he loves to cuddle and kiss people. He sits in your lap like a baby., He's sensitive and sweet. He's not a pushover at the dog park though, he will meet any dogs challenge and likes to nip at weak dogs or puppies to show them who's boss....which I'm not crazy about. He's never been in a fight or hurt another dog though I must say. He never humped or did any dominance stuff with other dogs either....but he plays rough with neck biting, which not all dogs enjoy.
    We thought, he needs a friend at home to keep him active in the yard.... This was a big mistake.
    A year ago I got an 8 wk old husky puppy to play with him. She was sweet at first and he loved her but now she is a total menace! She is not well behaved at all and she has had many private training sessions with the dog trainer and we do our best with her. I have been working from home for many years so I have always been home with my dogs and they get loads of attention and access to the outside most of the day. My older husky was hard to potty train took him 6 months to learn fully, but he's not had single accident since...hotels or at home. My second husky seemed to do well at first but then became worse and worse as she got older which makes no sense! I had her in my office with me all day until she was 5 months old and watched her like a hawk she didn't make that many mistakes in the house but she as got older and had more free roam she was having more mistakes and started peeing and pooping on couches and beds! At 1 years old now she doesn't pee or poop in the house anymore but every so often she'll poop on the sofa, which I assume is for dominance or marking. luckily I use waterproof mattress covers and couch covers, but still should not be happening! Even the dog trainer couldn't understand why she was doing this.
    She still jumps, nips, mouthy, submissive peeing, cries to go out at all hours of the night so we can't sleep past 6am without taking her at least once. Since she was young she was in a crate at night and she would cry we thought she would stop crying at some point but she's not the kind of dog that gives up.... She cried the first night for 6 hours straight I honestly thought something was wrong with her. We took her out to potty but nothing she just didn't want to be in the crate. The second night she cried for 4 hours, then two, etc. Even today at 1 years old I put her in a very large indestructible crate at night, sometimes she'll start yelping at 2:00 a.m. or 4:00 a.m. at 6:00 indicating she has to potty. She's not a small dog she's 60 lb she should be able to hold it for 9 to 10 hours.... If you ignore her she just doesn't louder and louder and she doesn't stop till she gets out. It's crazy. She's destroyed shoes, eaten entire socks, panties, scrunchies, hair bands, plastics, cloth towels, etc.....she'll eat anything. She destroyed the lattice under our Deck, she digs in the backyard like crazy, she's escaped three times.... But has luckily come back on her own accord after exploring the woods for a few hours. She pulls very hard on the leash.
    My older husky is very chillaxed and likes to sit on the deck and watch animals in the woods.... He's now sometimes afraid to go outside because she pulls on his neck and harasses in the whole time he's out. They do enjoy chasing each other but on the other hand he also likes his quiet time and she doesn't!

    Dogs that don’t shed or shed very little need grooming more often than dogs that do shed because of how faster hair accumulates
