This worked like a charm!! Our little cockapoo is not the best with new dogs and has historically made many enemies in the neighborhood. With this advice, we PROPERLY introduced her to my sister's dog for the holidays and they peacefully coexisted throughout their stay! THANK YOU!

I got my new puppy two days ago. They have already been playing and I make sure to have their own seperate beds. When Navi (Nahvi) gets into Tru’s bed (My baby beagle!) I make sure Navi knows that’s Tru tru’s bed. Or no that’s Tru Tru toys. And I’ll praise the new puppy for choosing a different toy or offering her 10 different ones until she picks one she likes. And praise Nahvi for choosing her bed. I’ll say good bed good bed. Glad to know I’m doing some things right. The puppy also sleeps in a kennel. That way Tru knows that her place in the bed is secure. Good information! Thankyou!

Thank you. We just got a new rescue. Our old dog was great and playing with the new dog, even in the backyard. However, when we went inside, everything changed. Our dog that we already had started getting really snappy and growling at the new dog. I realize now that a lot of that is because of my stress and treating our old dog differently. I'm going to go take them for a walk. Great video with lots of good tips.

Thank you so much, we recently lost one of our dogs (organ failure, the vet said) from old age, a small dog, and now we're thinking of adding another small dog to the family. The big dog has had issues with other dogs in the past (fights with big dogs, fights with other dogs introduced to our house poorly.) This will set them up for success, as you say.

Too bad I didn't see this earlier:my sister and I both got new dogs at the same time, and since both dogs are way-ok with just about any other dog, we weren't being careful about introductions. Now we have to back up and start over: little spats happened in the house. So I figure although it would have been ideal to have done it this way from the start, we can get back some lost ground by going on walks.... they completely ignore each other when we're on leashed walks together. You gotta start somewhere! Hard to do this in this weather!!

I plan to utilize ALL of the advice and insight given here and will absolutely save this video to share with all my friends who are adding new dogs! Would you consider making a Spanish subtitled version of this video so I can share it with my local friends here in Ecuador? It would help our rescue work SO MUCH. Thank you!

When I rescued a new dog to my pack of 6-7-8 dogs I had the new dog at the vet, then shuttled my other dogs in pairs to greet the new one on “neutral ground” for 10-15 minutes, then went home with my two dogs and drove another pair to greet the new dog. Of course, that took the whole morning. Then when I brought the new dog home to the pack the pack was already familiar with her and “we,” dogs and I had no problems. I know such a thing is not for everyone, but I knew my dogs and what I did was based upon observing their behavior with adding new dogs to the pack

My current dog is a washed service dog (didnt make it through the training) so I’m getting a new puppy in December from a reputable breeder. My current dog is one and has never even as much as corrected another dog. She’s super friendly to everyone and every dog. Her only issue is her prey drive that we’re working on. So basically idk why I’m so worried about their meeting but I’m still going to go about it as cautiously as possible and I love your method.

Thank you for the great and very well informed video! I have a 4 year old border collie who began life with us in this house growing up with an older sister, unfortunately the older sister actually bullied the younger one quite badly, to the point of bleeding. When we sought help from a professional trainer, as they were both puppies she suggested our best course of action was to find another home for the more independent of the two, which in this case was the older sister. Now, that’s the back story out of the way - our, now 4 year old border is extremely affectionate, clingy and doesn’t like being left alone; this is why I felt we should think about introducing another dog to her, as we all work in my house and she does have to go long periods of time in the house on her own; (she doesn’t seem ever want to play with any of my friends dogs as they are all older however, for the first time ever I saw her get really excited and playful with a Staffordshire bull terrier on a walk, once) What do you suggest I do? She tends to “act out” if she is left alone without me or my Mum at home by terrorising/chasing the cats or by scratching/gnawing on her legs and/or getting items out of my Mum’s room (stuffed toys etc.) and bringing them downstairs to chew. She is a really lovely girl but she does get jealous extremely easy but I want her to know it’s okay to play, I really think with her older sister bullying her all the time when she was younger she doesn’t understand that it’s okay to play and that she won’t always get hurt :(

A white female German shepherd just turned up on my porch yesterday. We took her to the vet to see if she was microchipped. No microchip, just a very hurt and confused dog. We suspect she was dumped near our house a week or so ago. She’s so sweet and beautiful so we took her in that night. Today we got her fully vetted and bathed 😊❤ we don’t know if we’re keeping her or just fostering but, we already have three other dogs (who are dog aggressive) so I think introducing slow and outdoors is best! The rescue dog I decided to adopt was so absolutely traumatized by us putting her in the car and driving an hour to our home that she would not even stand. It was awful. We had to physically pick her up and bring her in the house. We have since overcome most of that and now she loves walking on her leash and getting exercise. I’ve rescued a few dogs but this one has been the most stressful. She’s a dachshund pit bull mix and 3 years old. She was found abandoned in some woods in Georgia and was pregnant. I’m pretty sure she was abused. She’s so much better and I think with time and patience she will be more carefree. Cheers!

Awesome vid as always! My 3 dogs met new pit mix puppy at adoption Center. I learned lots having an expert watch them interact that 1st time. When we got home I knew who was going to be resource guarding ME and not just toys/food. 1st week was slow interactions using kennels to separate and 1 dog at a time with puppy. 3 months later and all is well :)

Good advice. I learned something different than what I do. I never have walked them one in front of the other and switch them. Thank you! I can see where that can help harder meetings.

Great. Worked. I made the mistake of not introducing them first and brought the dog into the home. It was a disaster. Of course. One of my dogs is fine. The other one NO, bad idea. Anyway, I took them for a walk. Oh my gosh, completely different dogs, different attitudes, not trying to eat each other anymore. Thank you thank you. I did introduced him out in the front yard which I thought was a neutral territory apparently not.

Super helpful video. I'm 50/50 on bringing a new rescue pup (12 weeks old) into our home with our 4yr old rescue mutt - could happen in 4 days. I'm prepping the home but still concerned about how we can make this a calm, solid introduction. I know to do the walk on neutral ground, and we plan on it. I'm concerned about ALL the days that follow. Anyway, thanks for the video.

What's your suggestion if you have 2 bigger dogs and bringing in a small breed pup? One on one introduction?
The size difference does make me a little nervous...

We have a 7 year old pitty that we are about to introduce to a 6 year old foster, my parent sent me this and it sounds great to try! Especially since our pitty can get jealous and resource guard new dogs often 😅

Thanks for the advice! We’re talking about getting a second dog but while our first dog used to be around other pups all the time and lived with one for years, ever since we moved out of my dad’s house and into a place where she was the only dog, she can be a little aggressive with other dogs. I think if we follow this advice, she will get along well with other dogs again as long as we introduce them properly.

Very helpful video! My dog has always gotten along with other dogs at their homes, but we had a friend bring their dog over to our house for the first time, and it didn't go well... my idea was to go on a walk with them and walk into the house together next time, I hope it works! Sounds like a lot of people have had success with this method so fingers crossed!

Thanks for the info! Shelters aren't doing dog meet and greets before adopting, now so if I were to adopt this male GSD that is available, I'd have to introduce him to my 2 overprotective female GSDs on my own. Now I know must be neutral ground, and side by side.

I just took in a stray Chocolate Lab with my 3 dogs, I couldn’t walk with them because the stray’s pads are badly blistered and she stays off them. I have a dog gate to my back porch from my master suite. After a thorough vet check to be sure stray was healthy, I put her in the back porch with gate closed, but dogs could see and smell each other. I put strays pillow close to gate and took her old dirty harness off and placed it inside where my dogs could sniff it. After one day like this I introduced one dog at a time, starting with the calmest one, a Shiba Inu, and walked with them in the fenced in back yard on the soft grass, then I brought the next dog, a Belgian Shepherd, in, and then my very attached to me German Shepherd, she wouldn’t go near the new dog, and tried to hide behind me or hide behind my friend who helped. We finally had all 4 dogs in the back yard, then back porch and then I opened the dog gate to my suite. New dog sniffed around and went into main yard, also fenced in, and they all kind of just wandered around still very guarded with each other. It’s been ok so far. Will there be a pecking order fight? I’m sure there will be eventually, but so far so good. Please have your pets spayed or neutered, the shelters are full of dogs set out by desperate owners due to the present financial hardship many find themselves in due to high prices, high inflation and a recession. My new girl only weighs 41 lbs, at her age 2-3 years old she should be about 60 lbs. The dog warden says he has never seen a dog crisis in the shelters like this in his life, they have a waiting list of over 60 dogs that owners want to surrender. I’m keeping my new girl because with the shelters all around full and over capacity they’ll start euthanizing, which just breaks my heart.

We will give your method a shot and hope for the best. Our Pit/Boxer is deeply loved by our family and we hope she will be open to the new arrival. Wish us luck!

Great advice as always. I tend to get a lift to pick up a new pup and take my other dog/s with me and I sit new pup on my lap so the older dogs/dog knows the pup is under my protection. I always have bitches and never had an issue doing it this way. I stress, this is with young pups only. With older dogs I would do as you suggest. So important to get this right. Best to relax and ignore the dogs mostly. When home I take all dogs and new pup desperate for a pee into the garden. Always under supervision . Great video Tom. So important to spread the love equally between the dogs . People do tend to feel sorry for rescue dogs and that won't help any dog. We need to make our dogs feel safe : ) You're doin g great work Tom : ) Thanks
