- Are you thinking about getting a second dog? People often ask when should I get a second dog, or when should I get another dog to go along with my puppy? There’s a lot you’ll want to know about puppy training, owning a dog, dog training, how to work with two dogs, and the pros and cons of having 2 dogs. Thank you for this! We have a 15 month old yorkie and recently got a 7 month old yorkie as a friend for her. It worked out better than we could have hoped. They play together all the time and now the 15 month old leaves the cats alone! We have a much calmer household as the 15 month old was very demanding of our time and constantly chasing and pestering the cats, so much so they were scared to come inside. Now everyone can hang out in the same room. I even found them all sleeping on the same bed in the sun the other day! All she needed was a little buddy to fight with and help wear her out.
Your comment has just given me so much hope!! We're hoping to adopt a second dog soon and our current dog is also demanding and a bit of q bossy boots when it comes to other dogs. How slowly did you take the introductions, and did they take to each other straight away? Thank you 😊
@@chantalsweeney2995 they had already met a few times prior, so they knew eachother. However it took our older girl about a week to get used to the idea she was here to stay and she very jealous for a few days. They still have the odd tiff and they're not best friends exactly, I.e. they don't cuddle together, but they love to play and fight and they're a bit of a team. I'm not going to lie, they're hard work, like all dogs, but I think they're happier with the two of them and the cats are definitely happier!
This is what my hope is!! My rescue is constantly chasing and trying to play with cat. Cat has no problem swinging at the dog but the dog views the swings as playing. My dog is 2 now & im thinking about a 2nd similar in age & hope to have your success!
i want to get a second dog beacuse my first dog who is turning 3 years old is super lonely in this big house and yard. So ive decided to start thinking about getting a second dog so he will have more fun

Would you have to match dog size? So we have a 3 yo female lab. I’d love another dog but I was hoping for something miniature/toy size, or is this a bad idea?

I have a 5 month old female boerboel (south african mastiff) puppy. I'd like to get her a friend as she's our only dog on a big property. She always tries to play with our neighbors dogs through the fence but they are too old and not in the mood for a pup.. We have tried bringing them over. She plays well with GSD 1yr female that's my uncles. Would you suggest waiting til she's older or getting a younger pup or older pup? 😅

We recommend waiting until your pup is fully grown and you love all of her behaviors. She still has a lot of development to do and if there's another puppy in the mix this could make it really hard on you. For now you can find her another puppy with a similar temperament for playdates. When she's just a little older (after a year, generally) it would be a better time add a new dog.
Hello, so me and my family want a second dog but my dog I have now is not the best with other dogs, he gets anxious and has recently started to show more aggression, my thinking is that getting another dog will help him get used to other dogs ? Is this a good idea or not, thank you!
If your dog is not comfortable with other dogs, it may not be safe to bring another dog into your home just yet. We recommend you seek out a certified trainer who can help your older dog be less stressed, and guide you through bringing in another dog.

Do you know anything about miniature schnauzers? What breed do they get along with?
It's important to do research online to find a good match for your dog's specific temperament. Even dogs of the same breed can be very different!
Since you have Cavalier King Charles Spaniel do Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Golden retrivers get along well? I'm trying to convince my Parents to get me a second dog and need to know if the 2 breeds typically get along
They are both happy and friendly breeds, so they normally do get along well! But, each and every dog is different and gets along with other dogs differently. Hi! I have a 10 year old male mini schnauzer and I really want to get another male mini schnauzer, do you think this would be a bad idea? I feel like my dog needs some company as he’s getting older, we live in the mountains so he really has never had any play dates or stuff like that and it makes me sad
It's hard to say without knowing your pup and their temperament around other dogs.
I have a 5yr old male Rottweiler German Shepard mix and a 2 month male lab pit mix and I need help with my older dog who seems jealous and growls and likes to nip at my puppy

I'm supposed to be getting a puppy in December, after watching these videos I'm terrified now! I have a 4 yr old bugg. She loved my exs belgian malinois. I am picking up my older dog on our way back. Should I get the person to drop her off instead!?

If your dogs are at risk for harming one another, you'll need to consult a professional trainer. Unfortunately, the training industry is not well regulated and you have to do your research to make sure the trainer you work with uses fear free and positive methods based in behavioral science. Credentials to look for in a trainer would be Fear Free Certified, CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed) and/or CBCC-KA (Certified Behavior Consultant Canine-Knowledge Assessed.) What if you dont want a puppy but adopt an older dog? I really miss some information about that
It's hard to give generalized information about an older dog because their life experiences make each one a different situation. But many of the tips we give on interpreting body language and working on training skill will still apply.

I hope this video helped you. Just remember that your 13 year old and your puppy will probably not have a lot in common. You'll want to make sure you have the time and space to work with them separately.

The new dog is a smaller Pomeranian and the dog that I have now Lola is a middle size Pom. What do you recommend feeding a small Pom? We give Lola fresh pet

awwww my Great Dane was named harper too!!! 🤍 ): had to put her down last July, she was going on 11 years old and did NOT care for other dogs. wasn't aggressive but they really stressed her out, her play style was extremely gentle when she did want to play w another dog so 95% of other dogs were just overwhelming to her so I did hold out on getting another dog even though I really wanted a puppy I didnt want to add stress to her life in her senior years. I have a new dane puppy now and having her really confirmed for me that getting another one would have been an AWFUL idea lol, she has BOUNDLESS giant energy. I do want to add another dog now but I will do it while she is still young when she grows up a bit more. great video, thank you!!
