  • I collect a three week old BMW RnineT press motorbike from BMW Motorrad’s UK headquarter in Farnborough, Hampshire.
    After giving back the Triumph Bonneville T120 a week ago, I’m keen to find out how thees two big capacity modern classic motorcycles compare.
    I ride through Hampshire and into the Surrey Hills, where I stop off at Ryka’s biker cafe at the bottom of Box Hill and discuss the R9T with some fellow bikers.

    I have a 2019 R9T and absolutely love it more and more every time I ride it. It just seems to get better with time and nice to ride a simple bike that brings back the joy of riding when a bike was a bike without all the bells and whistles. You actually feel like you are engaged with the bike.

    Lovely review of my favourite bike. Don't have one yet, still riding my old R850R, though. You are presenting the bike honestly and with the point of view of a person who is really riding all year round. And thank you, thank you, at last someone who speaks English without finishing every sentence as a question!

    Just bought a 2014 RnineT and I am thoroughly stoked! I also have a Triumph 2018 Speedmaster, so between the two, I am set for a while, with the Triumph for more long, comfortable rides and the Beemer for the snappy twisties. Nice video, BTW. Your enthusiasm is infectious!

    Ive starting watching your channel in earnest a few weeks ago when one of your Tenerife videos caught my attention and I became hooked on your passionate narrative style. Now I’m going back to your previous episodes, thus my late comment on this one.
    I think of the BMW RnineT as a retro inspired naked sports bike with retro cues such as a single round headlight, smooth curvaceous tank, cooling fins, and simple shaped seat. Whereas the Triumph Bonneville Modern Classics are truer to the retro theme.
    I did wonder why, after you discovered the RnineT’s sporty character, you continued to discuss the RnineT as a competitor with the T120 when the Thruxton is the naked sports bike in the Bonneville line. I think most articles matched up the RnineT with the Thruxton as well.
    But as always very entertaining. As an American with very limited experience of the Europe outside of the touristy bits, I love watching your adventures through the eyes of a moto enthusiast. Just the way I’d hope to experience them someday. Also love the gear reviews and frequent cafes you visit. Can we have more Monica? My wife endures my own moto passion, and seeing Monica share your adventures is inspiring for us.

    I am 23 and just learnt how to ride a motorcycle.. late in the game, I know.. will be buying a used bike probably or lower CC one as I need to look at finances and shit but 3 days back I was just exploring bikes and all and ran into this beast. Instantly it became my favourite bike. You asked whether we see it as naked or classic.. for me, I see it as my dream bike. I'll definitely buy this one someday. Also, amazing video man, got to know a lot more about my dream bike! Subscribed! Cheers!

    The gentleman said to you “The T-120 is an old man, Spike…the RnineT is nothing like it” …I love my Triumphs for sure, but I must agree with his assessment ! The adjustable suspension, steering dampener, the tires and tread pattern, are just the beginning of the differences. Also, Love that jacket 👍 and If I could add an RnineT to my ownership, I believe I’d park it in the living room and take the grief from the wife about that. 😎 thanks Freddie, hats off to Monica for great video directing and editing, I detect her hand in that ! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    Hallo Freddie, I have to say that among the broad spectrum of BMW’s you chose one of the best, I myself had it for over two years and I can’t say more than what you expressed, but after decades of Beemers I decide to return to an old love, a British bike, a Thruxton RS and from then on I didn’t stop smiling!
    You know that each bike has it own personality which in certain way reflects your own. and so we find again
    ourselves with the Triumph Thruxton.

    Great vlog Freddie, thanks for sharing. I seem to be living my biker life vicariously through you. It was the R9T that first drew me back to biking. Throughout covid, I've become hooked on Triumph, especially the Speed Twin. But now hearing you on the R9T, I've gone full circle. I guess one of each? I should be so lucky! Looking forward to any follow-ups. Pete

    • @FreddieDobbs
      @FreddieDobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Pete,
      Thanks very much, really glad you enjoyed the video!
      The R9T's the kind of bike that can get people back into biking! It's also the kind of bike that takes sports bike riders over to modern classics.
      The Speed Twin vs the R9t; that's a seriously close call! I haven't ridden the Speed Twin for long enough to give a good input, but that's a great face off! The BMW is an extremely impressive bike- I'm a bit worried how much I'm starting to like it!
      One of each sounds like a dream garage to me!😆

    Always reminded my more in the same category as Yamaha xsr900. I view them both as much more modern bikes with heritage stylings and aesthetics. Triumph is quite literally just a new version of the same classics made for decades. You really can't compare the 2, the RnineT is hands down a superior bike. I still love my xsr900, and will not be changing for some time. Although I love and appreciate all motorcycles with passion. The BMW blew my mind when released and now it is just even more incredible.

    I fell in love with a R9T last year but it was £8.5k (bargain, but double my budget). I bought a Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 for about a third of the price which for me has some of the same great detailing but most of all is about focus and fun. I may still graduate to R9T but I’m having so much fun on the little 401 and it’s very cheap to run. If I had to do a lot more miles I would upgrade to the beemer. Great video, really enjoyed seeing Ryka’s (my old stomping ground as a 17 year old on my tuned Honda MBX125) and enjoyed you sharing the experience. Keep em coming!

      That's brilliant- Ryka's as a 17 year old on a MBX125!😀🤘
      I strongly agree with you- these smaller bikes are often more fun than the bigger bikes and I can imagine how fun the 401 is!! I still love my slow (relatively speaking) 865 Bonneville too much to sell it. Thank you for the support Tim!🙂

  • @harrydavidson5014

    I'm so glad you did this review and emphasised the differences between the BMW and the Triumphs. I owned an R Nine T from new in 2015 and kept the bike until 2018 and had an absolute hoot on it. I couldn't believe how the motorcycle journalists were comparing it to the likes of the Thruxton and Bonnie at the time as it was so much more modern and capable and not just an all rounder but (as you pointed out) a bit of fucused weapon when you wanted it to be. Looks wise, I absolutely loved it. The little seat hump was extra but did a good job of keeping my bottom from slipping backwards under hard acceleration. One of the best handling bikes I have ever had the pleasure to ride and I have ridden many sports bikes. The only two things I didn't like were the ABS which I found to be too sensitive and the fact that I had to pay for the first service which was at 600 miles so quite an expense if you've just had to fork out (12k then) for the bike. I don't really think anyone that hasn't ridden the bike would have an understanding of how good it is. I also think that BMW is a brand that divides opinion in the same way that say Harley does, maybe for that reason the bike is misunderstood as far as its capabilities are concerned. Then there's the retro classic thing which might put some people off. However, everyone should have a test ride on one, if for no other reason but to surprise yourself...😉👍

    I’m doing my “thorough” research for my next bike from my current beginner BMW G310R, it’s funny that you say somewhere at the beginning of this review that it was the r9t that really got you on the Retro Classic Wave, me too Bro ever since I saw this Gorgeous carefully thought out detailed machine, I knew this was going to have to be mine at some point to keep forever! It’s a blank canvas to customize however one desires! I however like the scrambler version better. I love naked hyper sports and retro classics, so the fact that it muscles on like a naked hyper sport and looks like a it was born out of pure heritage love, is enough to know this is what future Motorcyclists 100 years from now will consider a True Classic. Your reviews are humbling and authentic bro, saying hello from Sunny ☀️ Southern California! 🤙🏼

    I've owned and ridden a number of bikes over my 42 year love affair with 2 wheels and a motor and have had fun on all of them. For quite a few reasons tho my 2018 Urban GS is my favorite. I've been on bikes with more power, but none as refined while still a thug at the end of the day. Solid and reliable with plenty of grunt in any gear. And outfitted with a sensible backbone more mature in its sensibility than most naked thrusters. She's not slow tho...that front tire will rise up in 3rd gear if you twist on the throttle right.

    Nice review again. I have a 2000 Triumph Thunderbird Sport, old school, no electronics and even has carbs. Lovely bike and can get a move on but I am considering an R9T as it is more basic than most modern bikes in terms of things to wrong but better than the Triumph in terms of day to day use(week to week really). Now they have been around a while they are pretty good value too. 👍🏻

    I am one of those cases, where for very obvious reasons, the swapp occurred . Some nights I still wake in the middle and I ask instantly if I still own the T120…just knowing that it is gone in the trading I did with the BMW R nine T scrambler. I never went on off-road trails with the beautiful T120. Never had the courage to submit that classy bike to those harsh conditions, despite its generous offer to face them. The BMW R Nine T makes you feel like a Teutonic Knight. Even the BMW GSA riders, respect your presence on the road or in the motorway. I can see the fear in their eyes 😂 The bike looks also attractive and it inspires that kind of reaction when every vehicle recognizes the R Nine T imposing character☝️💪

  • @dainjahrus
    @dainjahrus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have an Rninet and honestly, most people complain about the suspension who own it, but I've never seen any huge deficiencies with it.
    I do agree what you said about the T120-Rninet-Speed Triple comparison though, having never owned a triumph, i remember riding a bunch of them and feeling like they were beautiful too look at, but with sluggish handling/performance.
    I came from a classic aircooled Ducati Monster... that bike was mostly a pleasure to work on, ride and experience... and the RnineT feels like the spiritual successor to it.
    its easier to maintain than a aircooled desmo, more powerful than any other aircooled engine and handles amazing as long as you dont go too crazy... my only complaint is the seat, while i could ride them monster 1000km's no problem, the seat on the Rninet is absolutely terrible, 1hr into riding it will leave me hurting... but that was an easy upgrade.

    Brilliant video Freddie, the production quality is just perfect too. I have the Street Twin and was so surprised by the R-Nine T on my test ride. That classic feeling matched with the modern style is alot more interactive and vibrant on the BMW, Triumph did a great job with their water cooled range but theres something lacking for me that the R-nine-t pointed out. I think its that solid, weighty feeling. I'm now your 487 subscriber, I hope to see more from you & we could do a channel co-lab if you fancy. I moved from a T120 to an R9T and particularly noted that the R9T is much more nimble on the corners. The T120 needed a good push on the bars to get round. My opinion is the BMW was just generally smoother and more flowing in its handling. The more forward riding position on the R9T helps give it a more urgent feel too. Not that I disliked the T120, it is just a little more laid back.

    Really well made and informative video, thank you for what must have been a huge effort. That motor in the R9T alone, and the heritage behind it, already makes it a classic. I like the small improvements, though I'm more of a GS lover due to the distance touring touring over varied surfaces I do, and the R9T does not have the wind protection and comfortable seating position that fits my requirements. That said, how I wish it did while retaining it's looks since my experience on one confirmed that it makes you feel special. It has a surprising kick in the behind when you twist the throttle, but in a controllable way that makes it very enjoyable. I rode the scrambler fitted with Metzeler Karoo street tires, and it performed admirably on well maintained dirt rides to my favorite hideaway spots. I've been mentioning ever since in my comments on the bike that I wish they'd made a few tweaks to a version to make the riding position more upright, with more leg room, slightly longer travel suspension, and incorporate a small but effective wind deflector system for longer touring (they did make incorporate the latter on the Urban GS version, thank you, but alas not the former to any noticeable extent). These are not cheap bikes, and where you are able to make the adjustments yourself (frame, drivetrain, motor based on a GS), so much more efficient when you can start with a better configured base. Despite all I've said and the constraints, I'm still tempted to add one to my collection for shorter rides. Enjoy your time on it, you will miss it once it's gone.

    • @FreddieDobbs
      @FreddieDobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely agree- the R9T already has the feeling of a classic bike and it makes the rider feel unbelievably special. It's been growing on me every day and I absolutely love it! Interesting points you make- especially regarding a slightly more upright riding position (I feel the same).

    Nice review Freddie, I did consider One of these when deciding on my net bike, but I went for the T120 Black in the end, I just felt the BMW was so small under me in the showroom, this was obvious when you climbed on it too, you make it look like a toy! but I ended up selling the T120 for similar reasons in the end. These bikes are great for 5.8 feet people and under, but anything over 6.0 foot and the bikes feel too small. Plus the host of available extras for the T120 was far greater than the BMW.

      And thank you for the very interesting insight! What did you swap the T120 for??

  • @Vilmir
    @Vilmir 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I see the R Nine T as a good looking roadster with high quality suspensions, not the same type as the T120 that is a comfortable cruiser with an upright position. BMW in France is pretty clear about the incomfort for the passenger, it's a solo bike. I still tried with my fiancée to on sit on it and even though she is slim, the seat is just too short for a trip longer than 15min. The R1250 R looks less good, but is probably the best option for riding a roadster 2-up at BMW

    • @FreddieDobbs
      @FreddieDobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Vilmir- that's a really interesting insight about how the French BMW market it. I completely agree- it's a solo bike that can be used for very short periods with a pillion. My partner, Monika, was not happy at all to be sat on the back of the R9T either! So true; the R1250R doesn't have the beautiful looks, but would be significantly comfier!

    In the market for a new ride and I'm torn between this and the t120. I think I'll follow your suggestion and take both for a spin. I assumed that it would boil down to aesthetics so I didn't even think that they offer different rides despite both being labeled as modern retro.

      I owned a T120 for a while then swapped to a new RnineT a year ago. The T120 was fine if you just want to cruise along with style and comfort but the BMW is a much better performance machine. If you enjoy back roads and corners the BMW is literally streets ahead.

      I've a F750GS too, it's basically all the bike you'd ever need and I can't really fault it - great for touring, 2up riding, doing the weekly shop etc. My main gripe though is it's almost too perfect and lacks a bit of soul so I'm thinking of moving to the RNineT Urban GS now to have something with a bit more character (I'd like a Boxer engine, shaft drive and retro looks) but not as much power as the other BMWs. It'll be way less practical (and I need it for shopping with as I refuse to own a car) but I'll make it work somehow even if I have to tow a trailer😅 Test ride booked in for next week so I'll see how I get on 😀

    Test road this bike last Friday, it’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing...it’s got more than enough poke for the road in a very good looking package, you can cruise on it but when you’re on a fast ride with your mates you won’t be left behind. I loved it and I’ve ordered one ( it’s all your fault Freddie 😉 ) don’t start thinking this bike isn’t very capable, I’ll be jumping off a KTM 1290R for the BMW so I’ll be dropping some power but this is just a better looking, better made, better all round bike and best bit of all it’s a bike you’ll always turn to look back at before you lock your garage door....Downsides? It’s BMW so it won’t be cheap to service but every now and then you ride a bike that’s just a bit special so I’ll torch the bank card now and worry about the rest later 🔥😎
