Thank you, your information was wonderful. I am a qualified remedial therapist in Australia and I have just had severe tinnitus in my ears for about 2 months. I was researching tinnitus and TMJ, and came across your post, I am now doing the exercises you recommend, and finally gaining some relief from the tinnitus.
Here after developing severe tinnitus in left ear, accidentally found 20mg dose of diazepam absolutely removes the tinnitus, I cried when the tinnitus disappeared but it came back when the drugs wore off. I'm now thinking my tinnitus is tmj or muscle related
I also have popping in my jaw when i am opening my jaw and tinnitus.Tried everything, but nothing helps. It's the left side and hearing is bit muffled to.Have been to MRI and they said everything is completely normal.Well it is clearly not! NHS sucks! At least don't have a pain for not, but i am afraid it can start in the future.I may try some TMJ specialist soon... :(

@@drchrisstepienclipsI need help so bad! I have bad tinnitus and I’m pretty sure it has to do with my tight muscles in my jaw because I also have very tight muscles in my back and have had it since I’ve been 15 they are huge tight muscles that burn everyday. But the tinnitus is becoming unbearable! I’m in Florida & I need help so bad! 😢
Hi, I have been suffering with tinnitus for a month and this is the first video I can relate with. I hope you can give me your opinion on to the extent to which my tinnitus might be jaw/adhesion related. My right ear started ringing at the end of a very mentally stressful week and coincidentally with a dinner when I remember stressing out my right jaw due to chewing hard food. My jaw has been lightly “clicking” every time I fully open it for years (but with no pain unless stressed out with chewing), and my dentist found evidence of night-clenching (although not severe). Left ear has no tinnitus nor jaw clicking/pain. ENT doctor found no signs of hearing loss after a test on both ears. After a month of living with it, I find that my right ear ringing changes its intensity in two situations: (1) there are positions of my jaw where the intensity reduces or increases, for example when I yawn it increases but if I move my jaw fully to the left it reduces; (2) meditation or focused reading in silent environments (eg at night or with ear plugs) helps me lower the intensity of the tinnitus to almost zero. The intensity goes back up immediately as soon as I hear a noise or do a quick movement. I am based in the UK and therefore unable to come for a physical diagnosis, but based on the context above, what would you recommend? Thank you for this helpful resource!
TY for kind words. It sounds like a combo of 1) Stress 2) TMJ issue with possible adhesion. Maybe try a myofascial therapist for jaw pain and continue working on stress? You need to do latter so you stop overusing jaw muscles.
Hello, thanks for the informative video. I have tinnitus for around 4 years now. It started due to some stressful work and travel routine. I also had some muscle pain in neck and chest. They went away with time but tinnitus didn't. I have been to ENt doctors few times, he didn't see any issues. I went to my dentist, he told me nothing can be done about it. Its normal for some people, so I tried to ignore it and in day time I don't have much issues. Only in the night, when it's silent, it bothers me. Although I can hear a very faint noise as well even with this problem. When I try to move my jaw it does make cracking sounds and sometimes I feel my ears have opened/relaxed after jaw movement. But I have no pain at all. Do you think this is also somatic tinnitus? I live in Germany, thus cannot visit your clinic. Thank you!
It's possible. Would be tough to tell without a proper exam. Do you find yourself clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth? How is your stress level and neck posture?
My TMJ symptoms started in November 2020, one day my entire jaw was in pain, I could not get it to relax. It was probably due to bad posture sitting all day on zoom classes. And besides that was having tight neck and neck pain. And also when I lay down to sleep my lower back and hips hurt. When waking up my traps and neck feel really tight. That same year in November 2020, my ears began to have fullness, fleeting tinnitus, and regular eeeee ringing. Eventually I went to a dentist to check out my jaw and it was determined that I clench at night. Tight jaw muscles. I was given a mouth guard, it helped it bit. The ear fullness went away (thank god) , fleeting tinnitus was reduced, but after a year I still have some jaw popping, a bit of earing ringing, jaw joint pain when I lean over on my right side( Where the ringing is most at) and I still have tight neck muscles and hips(lower back) when I wake up.
@drchrisstepien what is"the sit, slide, lean rule"? I found how you described this & connecting the mechanics of TMJ w/your anatomy book images really helpful (& I'm a retired RN) Sometimes I cannot wear my reading glasses b/c the the arms of them touching my scalp is too painful➡after your description w/ anatomy images makes me think that could be related to TMJ dx I've been given...I definitely have been aware of jaw pain related to not feeling, &/or being able to speak freely, or not being capable of articulating my thought/feeling as clearly as I'd like too; I've woken up in a.m. w/teeth marks/painful tongue due to "biting my tongue" in my sleep ,re: the exercise you kindly included here: it's hard to get my top teeth on top of my bottom ones➡seems like it's pretty mis-aligned➡can that feed into the TMJ problem, too? Thanks very much❣
Great video but I would suggest getting rid of the background music. Really distracting if you have tinnitus and makes it harder to focus with all the extra noise.
I have had tinnitus so long I don't even know when it started but thinking it may be related to dental work. Over 5 years ago I had tons of dental work done including 2 implant procedures all of which required me to have my mouth open for hours at a time. After both surgeries, I had clicking in my left jaw, or TMJD. Ironically, it's only on my left side which is the side I had a bone graft done prior to one of my implant surgeries. I have gone to different doctors, dentists and an ENT doctor and got zero resolution for my issue. Even chiropractic hasn't been able to help me (and I'm married to a chiropractor!!) It's frustrating to spend so much money and time to never get a resolution. I'm in Michigan and I need help!
just learn to relax with it, I been struggling for 2 weeks now and i swear i never researched this before, it 1st started when i looked into my health for my eyes back in June because I notice new large eye floaters and it freaked me out, i had 2 wisdom tooth pulled last year but I don't think that has to do with it maybe? But Idk maybe I also may need braces, i think once you find what is disturbing and damaging your ear and work to stop it your brain will naturally just let you relax from those symptoms, my right ear is killing me tho it's not quiet at all and it bothers me more how I never noticed it the way i do untill 2 weeks ago, i just wanted to read about it i sat down in silence and was fumbled when im like yep i have that... I don't know when it started but my right ear has usually been weaker than my left growing up im 26 i can hear from both still just with that annoying buzzing present.
@@kklips8975 Mine is likely caused by either the root canal I had done about 5 years ago on my left side (which is the worst for TMJ/D) or from the two major implant surgeries I had. It's not the ringing in my ears that bugs me the most. It's the pain and clicking in my jaw. I do facial yoga and lymph drainage and that seems to help, but it has not solved my issue. I'm still suffering daily and now the pain travels down my neck, into my traps and into my rhomboid muscle. Ice, massage, and TENS (electronic muscle stimulator) are what give me symptom relief. But the root cause is still unresolved.
Hi friend! So sorry for what you’ve been going through! We just saw your comment, so far we have no one in Michigan who do this, the closest option would be in Wisconsin, or if you are open to travel best in country is in St. Louis, wish you best and hope you get relief soon 🙏🏻
100%. Fascia is healthy tissue everyone has. Adhesion is unhealthy tissue that has bundled and glued up, causing tightness and muscle weakness. Make sense?
@@drchrisstepienclips Yeah I studied fascia tissue and I work with it for years in my professionnal field. Looks like it's just a different lexicon. In France, we talk about "adhérences" to designate areas of the fascia tissue that is in an unhealthy condition (with indeed, a phenomenon of sticking, glue..). "Adherences" in French can also refer to "trigger points". So what you call "adhesions" looks like very similar to "adhérences" in the way you described it. Ok thank you for your answer :)
@@gb4939 Wow that's awesome. I'll differ by saying that we differentiate "Adhesions" from "Trigger points." When we feel a trigger point, we deliberately avoid them as secondary problems. But we treat adhesion which are primary problems and lead to permanent relief. Make sense?
@@drchrisstepienclips ha ha ok it becomes more subtle and more technical :-) But yes I think I understand your point and I also make the distinction between trigger points and adhesions, in the sense that, the adhesion is a preliminary step to the appearance of trigger points. In France too (depending on the therapist / professional), we make a difference between adhesion and trigger points. Anecdote : from what I've learned, there are even 3 degrees of trigger points. This is fascinating and I think we have a lot of things to discover on this topic :-)

When you're texting, bring the phone up to your face rather than tilting your head down to look at it. Additionally, as we said, stress management is a big part of this as well.
Catastrophic tinnitus started in mostly left ear a year ago. It’s not a high pitch ring. It sounds like a low pitch laser beam. I’m confused ALOT. I also can’t sleep ever since I got that ear infection. I talked to a physiatrist and they said I have lots of anxiety which causing me lot to sleep. I feel like something in my body is causing me not to sleep and now I’m scared. Hi my friend. First, I've never heard the term PM. But, the fact that deep breathing helped it tells you directly that it's stress/anxiety related. I'd focus 100% here. Do you have a meditation practice?
YES This is the practice I've used. I did the exact process and it helped ALOT. th-cam.com/video/9U0lFMkbaq0/w-d-xo.html Its stimulating my brain stem. This made me help bring oxygen to my brain. WIth all the clicks when the eustachian tube is opening and closing their is pressure in my cranium. This I think reduces the oxygen in my head. My goal right now is focusing on getting oxygen to my brain more efficiently.

Hey hey, I had a wisdom tooth extraction 2 years ago and since then my lower law is numb with pins and needles sensation. My muscle feels tight at my neck and now I feel some pressure/ringing in my ear. During my surgery they put some bone bond builder cause a lot of my jaw was shaven off during the surgery. Hey, I had 2 wisdom teeth extracted and one other extra tooth on the left (all in one go). I got bad pain in my temple and got Lyrica, some antidepressants. The bad pain went away but I have numbness on the left and burning in the mouth on the left. Recently I developed dizziness and tinnitius. The tinnitius is worse in the left ear, sometimes only present in the left ear. I am so lost on what to do. The doctors keep telling me it is somatisation, but I know myself too well to give in to their ideas and stop searching for relief.
@@KD-ci7jy My pain is okay at the moment as well as my dizziness. My tinnitus is the same, my ear fullness went away. I have discovered I have calcified stylohyoid ligaments bilaterally and am being assessed for Eagle syndrome and Hyoid bone syndrome. Different head positions cause my dizziness so I am keeping track and am careful to avoid triggering positions. I believe it is caused by hypermobility and an undiagnosed connective tissue disorder.. Still have a long way to go but I am cautiously optimistic :) I am going to start physiotherapy for neck muscles to help with my hypermobile neck and try SCM and masseter releases. I also believe the tooth extractions caused me to start clenching my teeth (bruxism) at night and this is all somehow connected, because I find that sleeping with an extra pillow under my jaw made my pain go away 90%. Maybe the authors of this video can give some insight into this :)

After watching your video I opened my mouth fully and I hear a slight click in my right ear, could my tinnitus be TMJ? I have no jaw pain. Should I try massaging this muscle near my ear? Kind Regards Keith.
The jaw can be adding to it, but there doesn't have to be pain. This is very difficult too diagnose you over comments as this type of thing needs to have someone trace all of the nerves around your ear/jaw. You can try massaging, but be careful.

It sure sounds like it -- LOADING your jaw directly affects tinnitus. This is a good sign. Yes, it sounds treatable although I'm not sure what the health of your TMJ is like.
Mine is the same, (had it for 27 years, since I was 13) the loudness of my tinnitus varies greatly if I clench my jaw. I’ve been through hell this week, I had an ear infection suddenly and my right ear was muffled and not long after tinnitus got way louder. I honestly though my life was finished… I could not live like this, I could not sleep at all and no escape from tinnitus. I think it may have subsided a little bit but I’m now hopeful after reading some of the literature that my condition is possibly treatable. I was worried it was in the brain and there’s no cure but since it’s I can directly effect if with movements of my jaw then doesn’t that suggest it’s in my body somewhere pressing against nerves??
@@pct2025 So sorry Mark it's been so long. But keep the faith. We believe you can heal. Yes, jaw movements does suggest it might be musculoskeletal, and you might respond to adhesion treatment. But your onset of symptoms (age 13) and ear infection suggest it may be structural in the ear and less adhesion based. Do you have any childhood trauma? CHronic stress can also contribute to this, it may be helpful to start meditating or working on mindfulness.
Hello, I’ve been suffering for about 3 months now and the somatic tinnitus is annoying. I’ve looking for answers everywhere. I been diagnosed with TMJ the tinnitus gets louder when I open my mouth or sleep on either side. Where can I find someone like you in my area. I’m located in Texas. If not I’m willing to travel how long does treatment usually last?
Each treatment is 15 mins. Sounds like adhesion is your problem. We have a patient who flies from California every few weeks and his whole life is changed from this. I recommend you stay for 3 days so we can do treatments on Day 1 and Day 3 with a day of rest ini between if you're honestly considering this. That's what we have our patients who fly in do.
Hello I have been suffering from tinnitus for a couple of months due to a work accident (air hose broke next to my face) My level of tinnitus was low on right side ear the other day I was walking with my family and talking to them and my jaw pop for no reason the problem is that the level of my tinnitus spike high to the point that is hard to sleep and every time I move my mouth the level goes higher is getting hard to deal with this If it’s adhesions in my jaw How many visits do I have to take ? Can the visits be one day after the next or there is a waiting time during visits? I live in Texas
So sorry about this Erick. This may be a TMJ issue, but may also be an EENT issue. Hard to say how many visits. But we'd know how it's going in 1-4 treatments. For our patijents who fly in, we typically do 1-2 treatments Day 1 and treatments 3-4 on Day 3 and then people fly home. This gives us a very good idea if more treatment would help and people usually leave to fly home with some permanent relief.
I won't try a direct explanation. But the body compensates. We have tons of patients with low back pain on right and severe disc herniations and hypertrophy of muscles on left. I don't know enough about tinnitus to explain why, but I know the body compensates.
oh my god this explains my suffering and migranes so well: as a diagnosed TMJ patient I've taken drugs like cyclobenzaprine and have been dealing with high tension lately! this is exactly what the doctor has not been telling me about my issues and why I am getting tinnitus / sever reccurant migranes.
So glad you found this. First step is to ground yourself and work on stress/tension. Then mindfullly relax TMJ and it would help to find an adhesion specialist for jaw and neck.

We wouldn't know, we don't adjust. Obviously your tinnitus is linked to your jaw. The question is, "What tissue are you unloading to take stress off your jaw?" Wouldn't be able to determine that without an exam. If you can't open your mouth wide or you have neck symptoms, those are good signs adhesion might be your problem.

Hello! My TMJ symptoms started late 2021 after a very stressful period last year. Last February tinnitus symptoms also started in my right ear, and also Hyperacusis. After that I almost ended up in a burnout due to the stress caused by the tinnitus. After several visits to an ENT doctor, who found no hearing loss, I was told that there is nothing wrong with my ears. So I have since found out that this has everything to do with my TMJ. My right jaw snaps and my teeth don't fit together well either. I am now under the treatment of a jaw physiotherapist. After my first visit yesterday he gave me exercises to start with. However, I notice that my tinnitus has become more intense after these exercises. Is this a normal phenomenon as it is my first time doing these exercises (massage my jaw en head)? And will that improve in a later stage of my exercises? Thanks in advance!
Hey CS - I don't know what type of exercises you're ding so I suggest you. ask your therapist. What we know about INCREASED symptoms is that you're overloading the damaged tissue. There are times to do this, but I don't know the extent of your situation so hard for me to say.
i have a tinnitus that is not constant and now seems that i have a TMJ problem, can i fix my tinnitus if i fix my tmj problem? is that is the cause ofc, my ears are okay
I do have SN hearing loss in my right ear diagnosed more than 8 years. But recently i started hearing this ringing sound in my left ear. I also had TMJ jaw pain when then i was trying to mew. I feel like TMJ might be the cause. I’m confused.
Yup, how can you address severe anxiety? We're about to launch a 4-8 week meditation program where we guarantee you will have a meditation practice to deal with this. Are you ready to significantly reduce your anxiety in 4-8 weeks?
just put medicinal herb in your ears until the noise will gone.. here in Southern Philippines we have traditional heal using with medicinal herb. we use smell from herb to cure noise.

Yeah it sounds lke it could be. Where do u lilve?

After a month of living with it, I find that my right ear ringing changes its intensity in two situations:
(1) there are positions of my jaw where the intensity reduces or increases, for example when I yawn it increases but if I move my jaw fully to the left it reduces;
(2) meditation or focused reading in silent environments (eg at night or with ear plugs) helps me lower the intensity of the tinnitus to almost zero.
Yeah, the cause of grinding is usually stress, anxiety, or trauma. THe clenching won't stop til this is addressed.
You have cervical spondylitis like me i am 25 due to poor posture in neck
Did you have a cracking ears when you swallow?
Please I need to know it because I can’t understand what is going on
I'm gonna look you guys up. I went to an ENT doctor in Wayne and he told to me to just "live with it"
Thank you so much for posting this video!

Thanks very much❣
Hey friend, this is the sit, slide, lean rule> th-cam.com/video/-xczvP4DCso/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8kj1jgm0HTMIXzKi
This made me tear up cause this is a terrible issue and my family doesn’t care about me. It’s awful . I’m permanently stressed .Im seeking treatment.🙁
Great video but I would suggest getting rid of the background music. Really distracting if you have tinnitus and makes it harder to focus with all the extra noise.
Thank you for feedback my friend, means a lot! 🙏🏻

Hi, when you talk about adhesions, you refer to fascia tissue ? Thanks for the video !

Something that may help is being aware of your neck and jaw posture. Try to keep your jaw relaxed when you're aware of it. When you're sitting, follow the sit, slide, lean rule. When you're texting, bring the phone up to your face rather than tilting your head down to look at it.
Additionally, as we said, stress management is a big part of this as well.
Catastrophic tinnitus started in mostly left ear a year ago. I always had pain around the ear, mostly on the top side.
1 year later, I have left jaw pain, and popping of the jaw, headaches on left side mostly, sometimes would get a cramp in the mouth, constant tinnitus.
This video makes a lot of sense...I tried to see an ENT doctor and veteran affairs told me they could do nothing for tinnitus a year ago. Veteran affairs audiology told me to just live with it.
I think my massage therapist offers massages where she uses gloves and goes inside the mouth..I think we will do that this next session.
Where is your clinic located and do you by chance take tricare/veteran affairs community care? Thanks much!

I’ve been massaging the area and stretching the area now but I now have a louder ringing in my ear. I’ll try this out! I’m currently in the UK
Wow you've been through a lot. Could be adhesion, but I'd also ask the dentist what their thoughts are.

I can’t watch the background music is to loud 😢
Doctor can this pressure to the ear cause hyperacusis to some sounds except from tinnitus?
Sure can. But it's not a definite diagnosis.
What?!.. epic
Ha TY very much Diego.
Hello,
I’ve been suffering for about 3 months now and the somatic tinnitus is annoying.
Hello I have been suffering from tinnitus for a couple of months due to a work accident (air hose broke next to my face)
My level of tinnitus was low on right side ear the other day I was walking with my family and talking to them and my jaw pop for no reason the problem is that the level of my tinnitus spike high to the point that is hard to sleep and every time I move my mouth the level goes higher is getting hard to deal with this
If it’s adhesions in my jaw
How many visits do I have to take ?
Can the visits be one day after the next or there is a waiting time during visits?
I live in Texas
So sorry about this Erick. This may be a TMJ issue, but may also be an EENT issue. Hard to say how many visits. But we'd know how it's going in 1-4 treatments.
For our patijents who fly in, we typically do 1-2 treatments Day 1 and treatments 3-4 on Day 3 and then people fly home. This gives us a very good idea if more treatment would help and people usually leave to fly home with some permanent relief.
i have tinnitus in my left ear and my jaw pop on my right side. how can we explain it, that its the oposite side?
I have ringing in my ears. However I have no pain. I feel as though it is coming from my jaw. At the same time I had a crown put in and it seems really tight on my jaw. Could this be causing the ringing in the ears
It sounds possible, especially if tight. If you clench, grind, or have overall stress this is another sign. Couold also just be the crown directly.
How do I find a doctor like this in my area. What is your title/services?
go to integrativediagnosis.com and click find a provider or let us know where you live. There aren't many of us
Hello 👋 been suffering with a low noise tinnitus. It's in my left ear when I push my jaw back to my neck it changes louder, if I push it left louder if I push it right nothing. My jaw feels constantly tense and sore when touched and ear ache.
Is this tmj tinnitus? Before all this I was in agony and grinding my teeth in bed and now this, the pain isn't as bad but I wish I just had the pain you can take a painkiller for it, this is awful.
It sounds like your TMJ is def related but difficutl to say for sure. The TMJ sx are def a problem. Can you find someone to work the TMJ and suboccipital neck muscles?
If I have had constant tinnitus for 17 straight months and it is from TMJ, can I be cured? I thought it was from IIH but my jaw clicks so loud when I open it. Doctors always tell me to “just turn on a radio.” I am losing my mind.
Is the tinnitus worse with any jaw or neck movement? Does anyting make it worse or better?
@@drchrisstepienclips It is the same all of the time mostly. Maybe louder after eating. I don’t know what to do. I bite down almost constantly. My jaw also cracks LOUDLY when I open my mouth. I mean just snaps.
@@uniqueweasel Constant implies it might not be MSK. But the eating might mean it's TMJ related. Where do u live? It might warrant seeing an adhesion specialist who knows how to treat the tMJ.
@@drchrisstepienclips I am in Ontario Canada. I have IIH and am battling to find out why I have constant ringing. I have had three lumbar punctures and no tinnitus relief. I refuse to believe this ringing is forever. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I have gotten nowhere with my doctor.

Hi. I have terrible bruxism for years. Super tight 24/7 jaw muscles. X rays have shown bone growth from clenching and my tori (spelling) are big in my mouth as well as worn down teeth. Have had tinnitus for a couple years but then one night got worse in the left ear in the middle of the night. Can make it louder when I tighten my jaw, clench or retract my jaw. I am in Chicago and really need someone to work on my jaw. Does this sound like I’m the tinnitus is from the tmj issues?
Hi friend an evaluation would be needed, so far there is no one in Chicago who do adhesjon release methods, closest option would be in Milwaukee, Wi
Hi, can you let me know where it is in Wi? I would like to go. Need to do something and love your guys videos.

That’ll be first step friend, try to see a doctor or Therapist for it!
I have tinnitus since 6 month and after doing hearing test and mri for my ears the ent says its not from yout ears you need to check your tmj and after doing mri on my jaw it shows that i have some issue with right tmj and i feel that my tinnitus is more bigger in right but i still hear it in my left ear
sounds like you need your TMJ checked out and diagnosed for adhesion my friend.
Still have tinnitus now?plis answer
When i move my jaw tinnitus disappears how can i adjust it?
We wouldn't know, we don't adjust. Obviously your tinnitus is linked to your jaw. The question is, "What tissue are you unloading to take stress off your jaw?" Wouldn't be able to determine that without an exam. If you can't open your mouth wide or you have neck symptoms, those are good signs adhesion might be your problem.
Great advice but is the annoying music really required?!?!
Ups! Sorry
Tmj tinnitus curable?
so bummed out to watch and not learn the title "how to fix tinnitus'. One solution at 7 minute mark. Ugh. The worst. PUtting your tongue (like saying 'N") in front of teeth like TMD dentists tell pts does not work "if' you have a flare up and overbite, or massiter/temporalis super inflammed. Impossible. IF someone has clip on : how to fix tinnitus, please share. 7 min to not learn anything (love education piece, but it should be more than 20 seconds with one tip that only works for some. I wish i could say "N' but TMJ is too painful (putting tongue behind teeth is same position, as N, hence, why i am adding it).
so sorry to hear this
There are times to do this, but I don't know the extent of your situation so hard for me to say.

i have a tinnitus that is not constant and now seems that i have a TMJ problem, can i fix my tinnitus if i fix my tmj problem? is that is the cause ofc, my ears are okay
it's possible, but you need to get diagnosed to know if its possible or not.
I do have SN hearing loss in my right ear diagnosed more than 8 years. But recently i started hearing this ringing sound in my left ear. I also had TMJ jaw pain when then i was trying to mew. I feel like TMJ might be the cause. I’m confused.
I hear you friend, it’s been long! And have you been checked for it?
Can sever anxiety cause this? I feel no pain.
Yup, how can you address severe anxiety? We're about to launch a 4-8 week meditation program where we guarantee you will have a meditation practice to deal with this. Are you ready to significantly reduce your anxiety in 4-8 weeks?
