  • “Advance Australia Fair” composed by Peter Dodds McCormick (Amicus) in 1878 and recorded by Australian bass-baritone Peter Dawson in 1927. With many changes, it was then turned into the National Anthem of Australia in 1984.
    Lyrics:
    When gallant Cook from Albion sailed,
    To trace wide oceans o'er,
    True British courage bore him on,
    Til he landed on our shore.
    Then here he raised Old England's flag,
    The standard of the brave;
    With all her faults we love her still
    Britannia rules the wave.
    In joyful strains then let us sing
    Advance Australia fair.
    Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
    We'll toil with hearts and hands;
    To make our youthful Commonwealth
    A prosperous, happy land;
    For loyal sons beyond the seas
    We've boundless plains to share;
    With courage let us all combine
    To advance Australia fair.
    In joyful strains then let us sing
    Advance Australia fair.
    Australia's sons let us rejoice,
    For we are young and free;
    We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
    Our home is girt by sea;
    Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
    Of beauty rich and rare;
    In hist'ry's page, let ev'ry stage
    Advance Australia fair.
    In joyful strains then let us sing,
    Advance Australia fair.
    (Not included in the song but the last few verses)
    While other nations of the globe
    Behold us from afar,
    We'll rise to high renown and shine
    Like our glorious southern star;
    From England, Scotis and Erin's Isle
    Who come our lot to share,
    Let us all combine with heart and hand
    To Advance Australia Fair
    In joyful strains then let us sing,
    Advance Australia fair.
    Shou'd foreign foe e'er sight our coast
    Or dare a foot to land,
    We'll rouse like sires of yore
    To guard our native strand;
    Britannia then shall surely know,
    Beyond wide ocean's roll,
    Her sons in fair Australia's land
    Shall keep a British soul
    In joyful strains then let us sing,
    Advance Australia fair.

    This is, and always will be, a far superior version of the anthem, than what we currently have.

      @@sambutton8494 I prefer this original version since it states the origin of this nation and its aspirations to develop and improve. It does well in defining our origins, where we came from as a country, as well as illustrating our country as bountiful and rich. The nation was born of Britain, which is stated in the first verse, the second verse is about Australians building a nation and the third verse is about our proclamation of our countries richness.
      Plus, what's not sung in this edition, are the extended lyrics which indeed input our culture in it:
      While other nations of the globe
      Behold us from afar,
      We'll rise to high renown and shine
      Like our glorious southern star;
      From England, Scotis and Erin's Isle
      Who come our lot to share,
      Let us all combine with heart and hand
      To Advance Australia Fair
      In joyful strains then let us sing,
      Advance Australia fair.
      Shou'd foreign foe e'er sight our coast
      Or dare a foot to land,
      We'll rouse like sires of yore
      To guard our native strand;
      Britannia then shall surely know,
      Beyond wide ocean's roll,
      Her sons in fair Australia's land
      Shall keep a British soul
      In joyful strains then let us sing,
      Advance Australia fair.
      In which these verses, do in fact, show to me, of our culture and our respect for whom we came from. The last verse stating that to old Britannia that we, shall be a VAST improvement to her, but we shall not forget our oath of origin, lest we are left in anguish of disconnection. One may see the connection to a nation far away as not reflecting the present, but I see it as our Journey as a nation, from our origins, to our present and future aspirations. Our anthem isn't about the fancy of the day or the politics of the extremist, but of the Australian Journey. Not many anthems speak of their countries journeys in such a beautiful hymn, and I'm proud that ours does.
      I prefer Waltzing Matilda to remain as a patriotic song, a great folk hymn. And for "We Are Australian", personally, I don't like it as an anthem, it picks and chooses parts of our history and individuals as part of misguided populism as it's reason to be labelled as an 'anthem'. It feels more like a folk pop song to me, rather than an anthem, as well that it feels like a song made during a time in which people tried to reinvent the wheel. Lots of symbolism, but no spirit. The only alternative that I'd prefer other than the original Advance Australia Fair is; God Bless Australia as it's to the tune of Waltzing Matilda and to which invokes more of a nationalistic force from its words.

      It doesn’t fit us anymore. We’re too diverse to sing solely of England’s loyal sons from Scotia and Erin fair. If our goal was to keep Australia british we failed miserably, perhaps for the better.
      Don’t get me wrong - I love this place and call it home! Its opportunities brought my parents here and I identify as Australian, but I wasn’t born here, nor do I have British heritage. Instead I can only give glory to God for the existence of such a prosperous Western nation for my family to call home.

    The 1878 original "Advance Australia Fair" written by Peter Peter Dodds McCormick is of course far better than our current one, but just like our current one it still seems more descriptive than motivating. In my opinion the tune is inferior to Waltzing Matilda, yet the lyrics are superior.
    That is why I prefer the patriotic lyrics of "God Bless Australia" written by Jack O'Hagan 1961 set to the tune of Waltzing Matilda.
    Ultimately though either the 1878 "Advance Australia Fair" or the 1961 "God Bless Australia" would be a great improvement over the contemporary version we have now, especially after the "young and free" to "one and free" change.

    1: Amazing song! Better than the one you have currently!
    2: I thought of this when I saw the clip of the guy tossing a boomerang:
    How on Earth is it effective as a weapon?
    Yes it returns to you, which is nice, but if you actually hit something, it doesn't return, because the kinetic energy is transferred to the target. Making it basically a spear, but without the spear's penetrating ability.

    • @bonnypop5764
      @bonnypop5764 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You throw a boomerang into a flock of birds. The way it loops ensures it cuts through the flock. You then run and pick up the birds. There are larger boomerangs made to fly straight for larger prey.
