Ireland is completely free. if you're talking about northern Ireland, they did not share the same sentiment, as their southern brothers. When Ireland went independent, northern Ireland wanted to remain loyal to the crown. in 1973, a year after bloody Sunday, the Northern Ireland held a referendum on independence, the nationalist boycotted it, and this resulted in over 98% voting to remain, even if the nationalists all voted, the majority would have still supported remain at around 57% supporting remain. I legit got choked up at the end with the lines of
“‘Twas slavery fled, o glorious dead, when you fell in the foggy dew”
I as a Cretan Greek salute those men who bore the fight so that freedoms light would shine.. within the foggy dew 🫡
An interesting way to spend Christmas morning to say the least
This song made my blood change from Pils to Guinness. Greetings from Germany, Erin go bragh!
As down the glen one Easter morn to a city fair rode I.
There Armed lines of marching men in squadrons passed me by.
No pipe did hum no battle drum did sound its loud tattoo.
But the Angelus Bell o'er the Liffey's swells rang out in the foggy dew![11]
Right proudly high in Dublin Town hung they out a flag of war.
'Twas better to die 'neath an Irish sky than at Suvla or Sud-El-Bar.
And from the plains of Royal Meath, strong men came hurrying through.
While Britannia's Huns, with their long range guns sailed in through the foggy dew!
Oh the night fell black, and the rifles' crack made perfidious Albion reel.
In the leaden rain, seven tongues of flame did shine o'er the lines of steel.
By each shining blade a prayer was said, that to Ireland her sons be true!
But when morning broke, still the war flag shook out its folds in the foggy dew!
'Twas England bade our wild geese go, "that small nations might be free"
But their lonely graves are by Suvla's waves, or the fringe of the great North Sea.
Oh, had they died by Pearse's side or fought with Cathal Brugha,
Their names we'd keep where the Fenians sleep, 'neath the shroud of the foggy dew!
Their bravest fell, and the Requiem bell rang mournfully and clear,
For those who died that Eastertide in the springing of the year.
While the world did gaze, with deep amaze, at those fearless men, but few.
Who bore the fight that freedom's light might shine through the foggy dew!
And back through the glen I rode again, my heart with grief was sore.
For I parted then with valiant men whom I shall never see n'more.
But to and fro in my dreams I go and I kneel and pray for you.
For slavery fled, O glorious dead, when you fell in the foggy dew
Kewl
Foggy Dew.

Really excellent music, and hello from your cousins in Brittain (armorique)
I remember hearing this song as a kid and thinking it was beautiful. Never even heard the lyrics just liked the tune. Revisiting it in my thirties I'm stunned. It's like your dad telling you a shocking secret you should have figured out yourself, one he would have told you if you had just asked.
What a beautiful and terrible song. I can't imagine a single person in this world who wouldn't cry if they really really listened and paid attention.
This song will be sung for millenia. In a world where the top songs only last a week on the radio before being replaced.
I'm stunned

Ireland is completely free. if you're talking about northern Ireland, they did not share the same sentiment, as their southern brothers. When Ireland went independent, northern Ireland wanted to remain loyal to the crown. in 1973, a year after bloody Sunday, the Northern Ireland held a referendum on independence, the nationalist boycotted it, and this resulted in over 98% voting to remain, even if the nationalists all voted, the majority would have still supported remain at around 57% supporting remain. Ireland did not exist as a country prior England invading, but many countries and factions. Ireland is more united now than it has even been.

R.I.P all the brave Irish men that fought for the independence of their nation
James Connolly was not Irish born and grew up in Edinburgh Scotland but had Irish parents.
And of course as people tend to forget he was in the British Army for 7 years and part of the British Army occupying force in Ireland for several years which is when met his Irish wife Lillie...when he was still in the British Army. Great man though.
It’s indeed beter to died under the Irish sky than at Suvla or Sud-El-Bar (now days in Türkiye, then it was The Ottoman Empire ). Protect your own ground not fight with the British. They always colonize ground of other nations. The Ottoman Sultan Abdulmecid donated in 1840s during the Great Famine in Ireland £1,000. The Sultan had originally intended to send £10,000 but either British diplomats or this own ministers requested that the Sultan send only £1,000 so as so not to violate protocol by donating more than Queen Victoria who send £2,000. The Sultan then also send 5 ships full of food.
