The clear winner here is obviously the 60gb because backwards compatibility. PS2 games on a 60 GB look amazing. The 40 GB model is essentially a PS3 Slim because a PS3 Slim alongside the 40gb are both useless consoles sure they can play PS1 games and sure they can both play PS3 games but they can't play The Beloved PS2 games.
Yeah, but the 40 GB is WAY more reliable. It's way quieter, and runs smoother, and A LOT less chance of YLOD. I had a backwards compatible model first, and it used to get super loud all the time, and would overheat and shut off all the time. I'm way more satisfied with the 40 GB. Your best bet is to just get a PS2 to actually play your PS2 games in. I overall say the 40 GB is the winner.
I first bought an 80GB model in 2008 (probably not backwards compatible). It did not read the discs at all and so I returned it for a full refund. I ended up getting the 40GB model, and it lasted from September/October 2008 until May of 2010 when it got the infamous YLOD. Bought the PS3 Slim in May 2010 and have had no issues for the last 13 years. Wonderful console. As a matter of fact, it was the last console I ever bought before switching to PC. Still play it sporadically.
40 GB is the winner in my book. Yeah it can't play PS2 games, so what? Big deal. If you really want to play PS2 games, get an ACTUAL PS2. 40 GB is way smoother, way quieter, and never overheats, even after hours of runtime. With the backwards compatible models, you are gonna more than likely have to deal with YLOD, or you're gonna have to eventually open up the console at some point. With the 40 GB, no issues whatsoever. My 40 GB is from November 2007, still running quiet and like new 15 years later.
I may be in the minority here but my dad used to own a original launch 20GB PS3 fat with PS2 Backwards Compatibilty (The one with a piano black trim instead of chrome silver and no card readers) and funnily enough it never once suffered a YLOD in its life at all and it lasted from November 2006 all the way up to 2010 when the Blu-Ray drive finally stopped reading discs and would ONLY read PS2 games.
I think 20GB PS3 is a joke but it still has some features: like 4 USB Ports, PS2 Backward Compatibility and less YLOD But the disadvantage about the 20GB PS3 Is that you have No Wi-Fi so you have to use ethernet adapter instead and it also doesn't have the memory card slot at 2:49
I've heard that the 40gb barely has any fan noise, can you confirm? I actually do want a phat one, because of how unique and rare they are. I just don't want people thinking ive got a vacuum cleaner on my book shelf, lol
I have the 40gb one sitting on a wire shelf with room to breathe, and it is LOUD. (I just cleaned the fan and re applied thermal paste as well) but then again, I sit right next to mine. I'd say if its across the room from you (as in it's by your tv and you're on a couch or something) I dont think it would be too loud.
Hybrid7 00x too late unfortunately. I copied all my data over from the 40GB ps3 along with the firmware version (4.81), and to be honest, I don't want to risk bricking my system.
@@martin.aguilar.a there is 80gb that can read ps2 games its the metal gear solid 4 bundle it looks the same has those readers 4 ports and its chrome (it reads most ps2 games but not all) while the 60gb read all ps2 games (80gb bundle version emulator) (60gb ps2 hardware)
It's not the 80gb model it's the 40gb both the 60gb and 40gb have the back outputs in the same place on 80gb which is the 3rd generation model has all the ports on the left
One More Question If You Play PS2 Games On It Will It Have A Black Border Space Around The Screen Or Will It Have Small Black Bars On Top And Bottom On The Screen?
Playstation 3 Planet XD9 depends on the tv. My tv has the black bars on the left and right side of the screen. But, there’s a full screen mode you can set when you pay ps1/2 games. This will widen the screen, but it will still have the black bars, but smaller. However, I’ve seen TVs that never have the black bars, so it really all depends on the tv you use. Sorry for the long answer.
From my experience the 60gb consoles are pathetic, I use to like them but I kept buying them and they would break after a few days or a month and they were pristine as could be, no dust inside or anything. You have to be good at tech maintenance to own one, 40gb PS3s don’t play ps2 but are way better quality. I’m just gonna buy a PS2 for PS2 games and a refurbished 40gb PS3 for the phat aesthetic (phat PS3 look is my favourite)
@Carlos Martir have you seen the prices for the backwards compatible ones? Sure you can buy it if you are a collector but you can easily install cfw on any fat. Also the 20 and 60 gb ones are more likely to get the ylod. You literally have to give 300 bucks to make sure you get a funcional system. And if you’re unlucky it arrives defective. It’s preference most likely
@Carlos Martir i know it’s backwards compatible but I prefer to play them on the ps2 instead. The only thing that I don’t like about mine is that it doesn’t have 4 USB ports other than that I’m actually happy with it. I think I’m gonna swap the hdd to an ssd. I have an 320 gb hdd on it but it’s kinda slow with the 4.88 version.

ps2 slim and ps3 slim is the way to go for me, I'm not risking with ps3 fat for YLOD

Nicolas Jawhary 40 go has worse fans, small ventilation places and more yellow lights of death.

Unfortunately no. If your fat PS3 only has 2 USB ports (which the 80GB does) it won’t play PS2 games.

Playstation 3 Planet XD9 yes. The 20GB fat model is backwards compatible with both ps2 and ps1 games. The only 20 GB ps3s are fat ps3s.
