  • Mizuno JPX921 Forged vs MP20 HMB both irons cross between both markets. Either requiring a more players inspired Game Improvement iron or wanting some extra help and forgiveness from an MP head. Both are put to the test in Feel, Looks, Performance and including the NEW Forgiveness Mapping to help you understand potentially which iron suits you.

Mizuno failed to inform the consumer about the 921 forged not having the Chromoly tech in the 8-9 irons until after the irons were launched. I spent months reading literature on these irons and even asked club fitters I know about the makeup of the 921 forged, and they all told me the whole set was Chromoly. I pre ordered these irons, and on the day I got them I almost shit, as I was livid to see the 8-9 irons being made of 1025E while the 4-7 irons were Chromoly. Had I known that, and given the price I paid for the tech only being in three of the clubs, I never would’ve bought them. I reached out to Mizuno and got a reply from Chris Voshall within a few minutes and he flat out admitted that Mizuno was not forthcoming with the consumer. I was friggen pissed. Very, very shady work by Mizuno. Left us in the dark.

Regarding "workability", might this be less of a feature these days now that even high quality modern balls are less soft than say. a balata ball from many years ago? I believe Tiger has mentioned this change, and if anyone knows something about "workability", it's him. On a humorous note, I remember Dan Jenkins, a golf writer with a wry sense of humor, defining "workability" as making the ball last for 18 holes. I think we can all get on that wagon. Great little evaluation today; greetings from the the States.

Greetings Mr. Nut, how do you calculate the face forgiveness figures starting at 17 minutes? Do you have a database of them where you can compare irons? Ty sir!

Interesting that you have an average of 10 yards different carry between these irons? I actually have the hmb and the jpx21 hotmetal and for me there's only app. 4-5 yard difference between the 7 iron and app. 2 yards with the 4 iron?

10 handicap here playing apex pro 21 just switched to JPX 921 forged. Looking for more forgiveness and i would like to play these a long time. My game is improving and i would like to know if lower single digit handicappers would play these irons as I want to make sure they are a good longer term investment. cheers thanks so much

Jay - I noticed you never directly compared the 921 HM Pro to the 921 Forged. Is that because those two are so close to one another?

Is there such a thing as flyers with the HMB? I ended up buying the HMBs and I'm getting this flyers where my distances are very inconsistent and I'm wondering if I made a mistake by buying the HMBs

Fantastic video and a great comparison. I’ve got a fitting at the end of the month and have been looking at these 2 irons. Glad I came across this video, now subscribed 👍

Great review. Frankly the best review on the air between these two clubs! Getting fitted tomorrow for the optimum combo of Mizuno irons in either of the two families, MP-20 and JPX. Interesting information on the 8, 9 irons since I will go with either MMC or JPX Forged in the "scoring" clubs and HMB or JPXHMP for the 6, 7 iron. Everything higher is JPX HiFli until 5W and Driver. For a 70 year old that still strikes irons well, I can't give up the Mizuno feel for a distance iron after playing 714 AP2s for several years! (I am not impressed with T100s / 200 look and feel)

Got a chuckle from the chalkboard behind you. It says "Regriping." Assume that must be something for old curmudgeons who do a lot of griping, but can't be satisfied with that and then do regriping.

JPX921 - is there a gapping issue between the chromo 7 and the standard 8?

I just went out today and tried demo clubs for both at the range. Came home and found this video. Great timing; thanks for the review! Now to decide which way to go!

Loved the face mapping, recently did this myself using smash factor on my driver head. Brutally honest I think it would probably filter a lot of driver options out!

I was contemplating changing from HMB to JPX, but recently moved from ProV1 to Bridgestone BRX and found I got back what I was looking for more consistent and slightly reduced spin and better flight and distance, but stopping power was almost negligible.

Another great vid - love the drop-off detail on strike. Gonna get fitted for new irons once we come out of lockdown, 921 forged are defo on my list to try (currently gaming 900 HM’s).

Very informative analysis. Keep up the good work. I get feeling you like the HMB better, but am not sure. Recently ordered 5 - SW of 921 Hot metal irons. Hope they give me the forgivenness I need. I usually hit toe shots. When I mishit, I hit heel to hosel shots. Happy New Year.
