    Love seeing the 919 numbers in comparison. Interesting how similar the numbers are (spin and carry) between the 921F and 919HMP. It's like Mizuno created a forged version of the 919HMP for people who want a bit more distance than the 919F. Would also appeal to Apex CF19 users who like the feel of the 921F but don't want to give up much distance.

    Thanks guys for a great review. What I would love to hear is Neil's feedback on the turf interaction with the Tour and Forged.
    I am a 1 Hcp and currently play MP 20 MBs P-6 and HMB 3, 4, 5.
    3, 4, 5 are my weakness but I can't stand the HMBs. To chunky and the turf interaction is sluggish. But I'm no spring chicken, being 50, I can't play an MB 3 or 4 iron anymore. My personal crusade is finding long irons with smooth turf interaction that has forgiveness and doesn't look like a shovel. Thus, I'm looking at the Forged, but curious about the Tour.
    My biggest challenge is finding a fitter who has a 4 or 5 iron to hit. I'm a firm believer that just because you can hit a 7 iron great doesn't mean you can hit the long irons.
    Hope to read your reply.
    Keep up the great reviews!
    Cheers

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback Jeff, Neil is always fan of why make the game harder than it needs to be, so forgiveness across the set is always important to him, but now more so than ever in the long irons.
      Not sure where you're base but Mizuno have their own fitting centre in the UK, where there's a full set of each iron to hit (albeit not with your preferred shaft option), might be an idea to search out a centre like this to try them for yourself as it's obviously an important area of your bag.

    Great info!
    However, most of us do not change irons every new generation, so it would really really be very helpful also compare the 921’s to the JPX 900’s.. It’s my understanding that Mizuno actually went back towsrds the 900’s in term of design (according to their info). So for sll of us that still happily game our 900’s it could be informative to know what the 921’s numbers / feel / moi are in comparison to the 900’s. Thanks again for great info.

    I have put off replacing my apex irons with the pxg gen 3 because if the exorbitant price in the UK. Though loved the tests I did with the p line. As such have been fortunate as a leftie to get some left heads and shafts to try out for a few rounds each (7 iron) and compare to my apex but also recall against my previous p760 which I much preferred the look and feel of but lost a little distance. These tests included the new TM, srixon line amongst others. Sadly mizuno does not do left hand in the forged except 4/5 irons which I don't use. However have been tested the tour (sel) and like it a lot as it gives you more workability, stability and feel. Much better looks. Interestingly I am getting a similar distance with my apex even though it is 30.5 Vs 34 in the sel. Shaft was project X lz 4.5 70g r of course not adjusted for lie etc. I wonder whether making the clubs 1 degree stronger might be the way to go? Like the much less offset as I rarely ever slice rather slight pull which the apex exaggerated. Any thoughts?

      Sounds like a cracking blended set, the two HM sets have the same lofts so you shouldn't have too many issues with gapping. The longer blade length in the Hot Metal will also add a bit of forgiveness over the HM Pro too.

      That's a really tough call Phil. Not sure we can devote a whole video to it, but think seriously about what you want from your scoring clubs (the short irons).
      Gut feel is we'd probably look at completing the set of HMB's, unless you only choose the HMB mid and long irons for extra speed and distance, and were less worried about spin and distance control. Doesn't feel like on the surface there's too much to gain from the MMC or 921 Forged just in the short irons, so long as you like what the HMB's already do for you.

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for the feedback Tim, much appreciated.
      Mizuno see the JPX921 Forged as a good fit for 10 -14 handicappers. As part of Mizuno's online iron selector they have them down as a more forgiving option than the MP-20 HMB for 5 - 9 handicappers and more workable choice than the Hot Metal Pro for 15 - 19 handicappers.
      Obviously it depends on ball striking ability but it's a pretty wide audience of golfers from 5 - 12/14 handicappers in our opinion.
      Hope that helps.

      @@todaysgolfer That's pretty amazing that the manufacturer has such a strong lineup of clubs that each one suits such a tight window. I have the JPX 921 SEL which is the forged from 6-gap wedge and the 4-5 are HMP's. I absolutely love the set. I really believe as Neil suggests, that the forged would suit a really wide range of golfers from low single digit to 20 hcp could game those clubs and be totally satisfied with the performance of their irons.

Am gaming the cf19 at present but before was with the p760 which I loved the look and feel off but lost a little distance hence the temporary switch. Only other irons I have loved - but price point offputting- and perhaps the best I have tried so far are the pxg gen 3 p line. Looking for that better look and feel, less offset, less chunky but without the loss of distance.

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely understand where you're coming from Aly, it's really tough once you've got used to a players' distance iron length to give it up.
      Not sure you're going gain anything going from CF19 to P770 as the lofts are well in the favour of the CF16.
      What we have found though is the P770 is great for flighting shots high, without losing backspin or descent angle in the long irons. A reason why some tour players are experimenting with them right now.

    Good morning,
    How would you create a full set by creating a combo of 3/4 irons??? Forged, Hot Metal, Hot Metal Pro.

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Robert, it probably wouldn't be a great idea to include 3/4 models within the same set, even though it's just about possible. Mizuno expect the Tour and Forged to be the most popular combination.
      We probably wouldn't team the Hot Metal Pro and Hot Metal in the same set either, they're the same lofts so essentially you pick one or the other based on whether you want a more compact shape and size with less offset (the HM Pro), or extra forgiveness thanks to a slightly bigger head with a thicker top line and extra offset (HM). Long irons from either set could sit alongside the 921 Forged short irons, so long as you check gapping from 6 - 7 iron and probably have the HM or HM Pro 6 iron (plus the iron or 2 irons longer than it) weakened a little.
      Does that help?

  • @daveferguson9592

    What are your thoughts choosing between the Forged and HM Pro for a 10 handicap player?

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really good question Dave. A lot of golfers will be asking the same thing. Generally a 10 handicapper is in a nice place of being able to go in either direction. At a reasonable speed you're likely to see a distance benefit from the Pro but from what we've seen that comes with a lower launch, less spin and a shallower decent angle.
      Best way would be to give them both a try and see how they perform for you, then decide how important a 'Forged' feel is important to you, as the HM Pro isn't forged. Hope that helps.

      Id say if youre a 15 to go with the hot metal PRO. Im around 17, got fitted for the HMP and really liked them. They arent as chunky as the HM, and you still have a chance towork them a little. At 15, youre better than i am, but my fitter/coach said if i went with a tour or forged, that it might be brutal at first, and may get discouraged if improvement doenst come quickly. With the HMP, you can work yourself down to scratch, then work on the artistry later.

  • @joec.4238
    @joec.4238 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding the forged irons, there's a noticeable drop in spin rate in the 7-iron compared to the 919. That means more distance but also more difficulty holding greens. Not sure if that's a positive tradeoff. Unless the answer is that you can instead use an 8-iron for the same distance.

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also don't forget shots are launching higher, peaking out higher and attacking the green at a slightly steeper angle too. It's so easy to write off slightly stronger lofted irons without looking at the whole picture.
      Hope that helps.

  • @Raymond-sj7cn

    I know it is subjective but the feel of the Forged for me isn’t on par with the feel of the Tour. For me the Forged felt soft but also “springy” / “clicky”. The Tour felt softer but also not as soft /buttery as the MP20 MB. The Forged was very easy to hit (but that was also the case with the Tour and the MP20MB) and went further but that is what I expected because the 7 iron loft of the Forged is almost a 6 iron loft of the Tour or the MP20. For me the looks of the Tour are also better. Sleeker and and thinner topline. But that of course is also subjective. In my opinion an aspect that is too often not mentioned in reviews is turf interaction. The TXG guys had a good video about that because that can result in that a golfer gets better results with a bladed iron than with an iron with (on paper) more forgiveness. I agree that it is wise to look if it is better to split a set and play irons with more forgiveness and easier launch in the longer irons...but than you have to take a good look with the fitter were to split and how it works with gapping. So get fitted with an open mind 😇

    13 handicap at 30 years old but only been playing 2 years. Looking to switch from my M4 irons. i was fit into the 921 forged with c taper lite stiff shaft. However, i struggle with hitting center of the face consistently. I'm leaning at going with the HM pro to get that extra forgiveness. Thoughts?

      We're firm believers in not making the game any harder than it needs to be Tim, so if you feel that's the right direction even though you've been fitted for a slightly smaller head, with less sole width but almost identical offset then the Pro sounds like a great shout.
      Have you checked launch, spin, peak height and descent angle between the two? The Pro is a couple of degree's stronger in the #7 iron.

    It seems like the 921 forged, is a premium 921 hot metal pro, the top lines are identical, offset identical, but it's $400 more expensive and is forged,vs cast from the hot metal pro, clubhead size is also the same so I imagine forgiveness is nearly if not identical.

    Not sure how accurate comparisons can be made without fitting the same shaft to each head.

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All stock shafts Luke, that's the part of a stock set that manufacturers get to choose (for their target golfer) what might separate them from the competition.
      Trouble with testing with only a single shaft, is that often it's not available from every brand, so you essentially end up testing what people can't buy, which isn't really very useful.

      So long as shots launch, spin and peak out at reasonable levels and they descend onto the green steeply enough to stop we don't have a problem with strong lofts.
      They've actually come a very long way over the last few years. We like the phrase 'I'm hitting my 7-iron as far as a 6, but through and 8-iron window'.
      Problems can occur though when slower speed players think strong lofts will help them find more distance, but they idon'thave the speed to launch shots high enough to optimise carry distance.

      We've tried using mid-handicap players before, but for our experience, because ball striking is so hit and miss you end up evaluating the players performance with each club, not how each club performs.
      Some of the data created with mid-handicap players can be very misleading, which of course is never our intention, so we use a test pro to show how models actually compare.
