    I appreciate that you restore these lovely mid-century pieces to their original look while also leaving evidence of the history of how they have been lived with, and used. The perfection of a flawless finish is less important than honoring the life of this as a real object that has been part of the lives of real people. Nicely done.

    As someone who is interested in getting into woodworking and furniture restoration, I greatly appreciate your educational approach to your videos. Your extra effort in discussing the difference in stain types and even refilming a step to show the whole process is such a gift.

      A word of advice? Please do not start refinishing mcm pieces until you practice a bit first. Practice on small, newer pieces first. These pieces are becoming extremely hard to find and when one does find them they've been refinished by someone who doesn't know what they're doing, need all new veneer or are so messed up, they're worthless.
      Just a bit of advice. I started a long time ago and learned from my parents on how to refinish these wonderful pieces. But when I started? It was a shelf or a small inexpensive table, etc. That way you're not out a lot of money.
      He makes it look easy bc he is extremely extremely talented at refinishing these pieces in particular. But he's also been doing it for many years.
      It is not easy, especially when you have to color correct the veneer for whatever reason. The supplies are not inexpensive, and you don't want junk from Amazon, you want the quality products from companies like General Finishes and Mohawk, etc.
      Good luck!

    Thank you for explaining WHY you choose to use gel stain over the liquid stain! Knowing the why is good knowledge I can add to my woodworking toolbox.

    Our family business, a mall based furniture and gift store, carried a few MCM revival pieces from Lane. Occasionally, some pieces would arrive damaged, and either the shipping company or Lane itself would compensate us for repairs. One professional conservator introduced me to the Mohawk brand of wood and leather fillers and finishes. I learned how to camouflage minor blemishes. It was very satisfying. I never had any problems with their products.

    Thanks for showing this. As you said, at first glance the original didn't look too bad - until you showed us closer, when we could see the issues. It really looked so much better after your work on it, and something I'm sure the owner will appreciate and enjoy using in their home.

    This looks a lot like my first few pieces. I appreciate you going back and fixing a sacrificial piece. I'm scared a lot of my first pieces are too-far-gone, but I may go back and try and fix my refinishing mistakes

    What you started with looks like how my refinishing jobs turned out when I did them. Kind of almost good, but not quite. I’ve learned a lot from watching your videos. Would do things much differently now. It’s also interesting how you touch up spots to make them become less distracting. Reminds me of what people who restore fine art do. They blend in damage just barely to the point where it doesn’t stand out anymore so it’s not distracting you when you look at it. Nice job.

    I love seeing these Lane Acclaim pieces. I have my parents' Lane Acclaim cocktail table and two step tables. I even found the bill of sale for them; they paid almost $250, quite a sum in 1959!
    My dad really punished theses pieces and I'm sure they'll still have some of those marks and issues once they're refinished but I won't love them any less because of that!

I also had to giggle a bit hearing all the birds in the background of the video because I couldn’t help but think they sounded like they were your adoring fans cheering you on and hyping up how great the piece looked. • @Siansonea
    @Siansonea 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    At 8:34 you can clearly see a huge dark spot on the top of the table, on the solid wood part of the top. I think you should have tried oxalic acid on that one section to even out the color, then stained it and toned it to match the other pieces. I think it detracts from the final effect.

    Am I dumb? 😢 what products are you using for the gel stain and shellac? I don’t hear them mentioned. Gel color would be great too. Not seeing them in the description or comments either.

    When did you stop using Candlelight stain? I love the pieces you've stained in that color!

  • @steveh1273
    @steveh1273 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    At the 10:00 minute mark you said to put shellac over the stain, then put a top coat on. Did you need to put the shellac on, what not wait and just put on the top coat? I don't know the difference between shellac and a top coat like polyurethane.

    • @jimurrata6785
      @jimurrata6785 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Shellac is used as a sealer. The topcoat solvents won't pick up the underlying stain, or the oil paint used as a touchup.
      It's alcohol based so it dries _very_ quickly, and because he uses a spray there's no brush or pad pushing the stain around.
      Shellac *CAN* be used as a finish, but it's not very durable, being affected by water/humidity, alcohol or ammonia.

    • @DashnerDesignRestoration
      @DashnerDesignRestoration  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you go finer than 180 you won’t get much stain sticking to the wood. I think the stain manufacturer recommends stopping at 150 grit.

    I've come across a ton of Acclaim side and coffee tables lately. I haven't purchased any because of the ridiculous prices ppl are asking bc they don't know Chairish prices are not real, lol. It's infuriating, really, bc on every one I've come across, they've all been destroyed by people who do not know what they're doing.
    Mostly burning thru the veneer with an orbital sander and a very poor job staining them all sorts of colors.
    I'd rather they go back to chalk paint than to keep ruining MCM pieces.
    I cannot wait until the trend is over. I can't be the only one, either.
