Brilliant and very appealing to my eye. I am not sure how the fish feel about it but I think if I were a fish I would chase that down for a meal. I am still hard at the bench, and learning every day. I cannot believe the amount of materials I have collected in just short of a year. Amazing. All the best to you, Sean
It is interesting that you have kept Håkan Norlings "Temple Dog" way of tying in the fox wings reversed - and then tying them in, by sweeping them back. Unlike the way Michael Frödin does it on his Phatagorva. They were friends for years and the "Original" Temple Dog and Phatagorva are very similar - the first having a black overwing though. I think Håkans and your way of tying it makes a stronger fly IMO. Even though I am sure Mr. Frödin would beg to differ. I love your vids Davie!
Hi Davie I cant belive yall fish with flies that look like that. That flie is amazing it looks to good to fish with. Can yall go to fly shops and buy flies like that? I havent seen anything that looks as great or even close to the flies you ty on here for fishing any were.. Thanks for the Great vids Chance
Thank you for the quick reply. Can you tell me why you are using plastic, and not somthing that sinks? It seems like it would be easier then fishing a sinking line al day. If you think plastic fishes better then I will try it. I would like to fish a floating line, in Canada you get dirty looks if you use sinking line. Would a polyleader be a good chose, with maybe a 3" leader? I'm enjoying your flies, I just got a two hand rod and it seems like I should try tube flies. thank you russ
Amazing as always Davie, did you dye the fox yourself or get it from the GAC? and still cant find that reflections would rainbow be a good substitute? As always Kenny
Hi Davie, Just a quick question about the goat you use for the wing. It seems so very soft. Could you please answer what species of goat is this? Or from what part of the goat is the fur? Where can I buy it? Thanks in advance. Janusz
Davie this fly is beautiful. I would hate to fish them they are so pretty. I wish I could tie one but I haven't any of the materials! I just started tying and there are so many materials to get. I wish I was able to tie for someone, and maybe I will be good enough one day, then I will have access to more materials. I could go bankrupt buying materials and still not have them all. Years ago there were less available materials. I used my own beard in a fly last week. It came out fine. :0 ATB Sean
Hi Davie I've done these with orange and gold turbo cones, very deadly here in Norway, If I had to choose one fly for salmon, it would be probably this one.. Mika
Do you sell that tube you use? If not, can you tell me where I can get it? Do you have a web sight? I'm just starting to learn about tube flies and it looks like you know what the heck is going on. I thank you for your help. Russ
Hi! I was more wondering in general if the wing has to be longer than the tube itself? Like if you first make a collor of a schlappen hackel and then you spinn calftail all around the tube so you get like two collars, one of the hackle and of the calftail. ///Mattias
Mr. McPhail I'm new to tubes and I'm wondering how do you get this fly to sink? In Canada you can't add weight to a Salmon fly, so would you tie this fly on copper? Russ USA
PS. body has chanced quite a lot from original, original would be gold tinsel and orange antron as butt, first part of body is gold flatbraid and tinsel copper mini flatbraid. :o) Mika
Davie, your ties are poetry. I'll ask what may be a dumb question. Could ram's wool be used instead of the underwing material used in this pattern. How would its performance when fished differ? Great dye results, by the way.
Hi Bo K, It's not a dumb question at all, I would certainly try the ram's wool if that's what you have and I'm sure it will work once it's mixed in with the other materials..Let me know how it works for you... All the very best Davie
Hi, I got a question for you Mr. Mcphail, I am a beginner in this kind of tying and I want to know if you got some tricks trips for me to get a nice shape with my wing tied foward? thank you
Hi Samuel Blackburn, As long as you comb and brush the hair and then taper the wing out in different lengths blending in a bit flash as you go this will give you the right shape in the wing..I mostly use arctic fox for the shorter hair then silver fox and then a bit of fine goat, I'll then taper back with a few strands of peacock herl and finish off with jungle cock if required..I hope this is of some help to you... All the very best Davie
Hello Davie! I'm wondering if the hairwing have to go pass the tube end? im tying with calftail hair and I'm haveing a hard time getting the length of the wing that i need. //Mattias
Hi Mattias, To tye this fly you really need to use a longer hair, and as you said the calf tail is too short. I would tye a smaller size of this fly but more on a double or a single and it would work well in lower water conditions...Here's a link to two companies that sell good hair for all types of flies including the Phatagorva..
