Hi Davie, just wanted to let you know I have been watching many of your videos, and I am a pure beginner in the art of fly tying. At first I wasn't sure what kind of flies I wanted to tie, or just exactly how difficult it could really be to perfect this art. I've spent a lot of hours consumed with learning as much about materials, techniques, and flies as I possibly can. Your videos, and videos of others, have been a huge part of my beginner learning experience. I've been trying over and over again to tie the Nagli Spey as perfectly as you've done it here in this video. I can honestly say I've learned a ton just from watching this particular video over and over again. So much was learned from watching how you tapered the head just perfectly, and left just enough room for the feathers, then there is the important little details of how you tied the feathers in, then of course the skillful placement of those jungle cock eyes, truly masterful how you got them to set perfectly. Then the way you were able to get all those materials on there, and still see the beautiful body of the fly. Even watching you tie the body of the fly held valuable lessons on how much space to leave yourself. I am really deep into this video, and it's definitely amongst some of the nicer fly designs out there. I'm amazed at how you keep the feathers from getting tangled in the head before you secure them. I always find my thread slipping off too when I go for the whip finish, it's like my head tapers too steeply and the thread just slips off. Anyway, I could comment a whole lot more, but I've got a huge enough paragraph here already. Thanks for the great videos, I really appreciate it!

Getting the proportions of your fly right will always help you make a better fly but there are many reasons that will throw you off as you're working with natural materials which are not always exactly the same even though it comes from the same bird or animal so you have to know when to tye off your hackle and how much hair to use to form your wing...I'm sure you will tye a lovely fly as by the sounds of it you have put your heart in to it as well as enjoying tying your flies...

Mr. Rice, I too am learning how to tie these beautiful flies. I found that if I search "Davie Mcphail" on youtube that a large selection of videos on spey flies pop up. I have probably watched a dozen in the last week. Just a thought.

Beautiful fly as is your usual. I didn't have enough characters in the last posting to finish saying what I wanted to say. I love the fly and am going to try it on a single hook as I don't have any doubles. I hope to be as clean a tyer as you are someday. I know they have been fishing a variant of this in the Gaula river in Norway with great success, so it's very nice to to see this pattern on TH-cam. :-)
I also think this fly would look great with green or orange colour patterns.

These feathers have worked their way into a few pattern from streamers to brown trout. I would say it's up to you what you feel will work on the pattern you are tying, I'm sure you should find some patterns if you do a search on the internet..

Firstly I would like to say that we all appreciate your videos a lot. You have very nice and neat style of tying flies. I would like to ask one question. Which spey feathers do you use, I have checked what is available on the market and it seems that the price between hen and rooster spey capes differs a lot. I was just wandering what you would suggest. Thanks in advance for your answer and thanks for what you do!
thats a nice hook can see that over taken the salars, a shame mustad never kept up the the DUBLN hooks. stunning fly as always mate, have saw white eared pheasant feathers for sale but never knew if any good will be getting some now. Cheers mate love the colours of this fly

The 'Canadian Tube Fly Company' are still selling legal heron spey hackles online and they ship to the UK at very good postage rates - I have used the Medium size hackles in various colours and they are great quality.

Good morning Davie. Many thanks for all the great video lessons. One question not directly related to this video of you don't mind. I have recently bought a jungle chick cape to use on my tying over the winter and was wondering what I could use the other feathers for. Could they be used as trout dry or wet fly hackles for instance. Be a shame to waste them
Mr. McPhail, I am curious about how a fly is defined as a "spey fly". Is this related to way in which the fly is dressed? For instance the red devil spey fly uses long flowing pheasant rump palmered on the front half of the body, while this fly the Nagli spey does not. Is a spey fly now a term used in a broader sense for any wet fly with a long flowing hackle? I see marabou spey flies, but to me these flies do not have the grace and beauty of the traditional patterns. I am just looking for your perspective on this Sir. Thank you for your time. Please keep these wonderful videos coming I learn a great deal from observing your tying techniques on the more classic patterns.

It is a term many used for a style just as you said when using certain spey like hackles like the one I used in the Nagli..I have attached a link to a website that I would recommend for you to have a look at, it would be worthwhile getting a copy of Autumn in the Spey by A.E. thanks, i was once looking for it to use in a shrimp pattern for Sea Bass and Trout. I think the Original recepy used Heron spey Hackle, i never found that tough. i used some duck feathers as substitute. greets from Holland.

Hey Davie, I have some spey hackle from a peacock, I hope that will do. I bought some fur scraps from a furrier, and I got some skunk! Beautiful fur, but I am not sure what I could use it for. Never saw "Skunk" in a recipe. Anyway, the black and white fur is just beautiful and shiny. I also got arctic fox, coyote, mink, otter, beaver, silver fox, chinchilla, and racoon. I bought it by the pound so it was only 10.00 USD per lb. Do you know how to dye the fur? What could I use the skunk for? ATB

Where, online, would I find a white-eared pheasant saddle, or cape, or even a whole skin?
OK Davie: Whit eared Pheasant Dyed Teal Blue and Kingfisher Blue are listed in this fly for Spey Hackle.
Can you give examples on the Internet on them ... as I understand it, similar Spey Hackle materials are also used in other flies, only natural or other colors?
The barbs of the feather are very long, that's why my question is.

I have used both colours of blue on the fly and I am very happy to use a long Chinese cock or schlappen hackle to tye these flies..
