Lmao, man, I always love your pick of intro music, they're always hitting the mood. I reckon the best overland vehicle for any person is one that they can afford without putting them in any debt. Of course there's usually the better go to options but keeping within your fiscally responsible budget should be top priority. Old jeep Cherokees are also a solid choice besides Chevy for lower budget.
The music sets the vibe!! I definitely agree. If I could’ve afforded it, I’d be driving a 4th Gen V8 Limited 4Runner but they’re too expensive!! I don’t regret getting the XC though!
IMO these were Chevy's best SUV ,I own a 2005 LS 2wd w/ 193,000 mi..I love how comfortable it is.Ive been replacing worn parts to keep enjoying it for many more years. Thanks for the review.
Daniel, I am in nearly the exact same boat as you right now. I was gifted an ‘04 LS 2wd from my Aunt (due to poor health) last year and have slowly been replacing parts on it! So far she’s got new tires, brakes and rotors, oil gauge sensor, front shocks, power steering fluid, synthetic oil and I have put many hours of cleaning the interior. It’s got 192k and it still drives like a dream. In the near future I will be doing the trans and differential fluid, ball joints, rear shocks, and fixing the front seat motor. I am actually kind of glad it’s not 4wd so I don’t have to deal with maintaining that system. I really do love this vehicle, it’s the perfect camping car for me and my family. It also needs a flowmaster exhaust but I don’t know which one I am gonna go with yet.
I own the exact same color/model but ‘03- still rolling at 280,000 miles with only work done was oil pan gasket. Best vehicle I’ve ever owned and first car bought brand new! BEAST SUV, just don’t get stuck!!!
Funny. I have dealers ask me every time I go into a dealership to get parts , they always ask me if I’m ready to trade it in. I smile and just say you couldn’t afford it. Mine is 2001 Tahoe LS with 5.3 votes and I see me being laid to rest in her. Been the most faithful thing ever besides my 71 Camaro SS.
I drive my parents '02 Tahoe. They got it a week before I was born. Drove me home from the hospital in it. Now it's mine at 198k. Replaced the intake manifold gaskets a few months ago and I was not ready for the humbling feeling I got cleaning the oily slime out of the manifold. Some of that slime was deposited there during the first few hours of my life. No rust, and she's been maintained meticulously. Showing no signs of slowing down. Even if she did fail catastrophically, id happily get the entire drivetrain replaced than spend 60 grand on a new vehicle.
Well done video. I've had Silverado Z71s but always wanted a Tahoe, I daily drive mine with about 206k miles and replace or upgrade parts as needed. These are solid SUVs and motors last forever. My Silverado has 346k miles on the original motor.
2005 Tahoe. If the interior ever goes dead, follow the parking brake release cable and you may find it leaning against a black box in a galvanized bracket. Move the cable away and everything will work again.
Just pulled the Tahoe back out storage after almost two years. Been slowly getting it back to 99% . Our outdoor activities are getting bigger and the space and capabilities of the Tahoe is perfect for me!
Even before the lift kit I was impressed with the off road capability of my 03 Yukon. It's only downside is once you get them stuck (especially in mud) getting them out is like trying to move a house. Damn they're heavy.... but quite comfortable lol...
My dad purchased a used burgundy 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe LT in 2012. It has been one of the most reliable vehicles he’s owned. It is currently at 240k+ miles.
Tahoe is amazing and good size for off-road. I have 2002 Tahoe 4.8L/4L60E currently mileages at 350,000 miles, amazing engine and transmission are original since my mom bought new in 01’, she gave it to me 😊
I've been on the fence about selling my 03 LT 5.3 since I've bought my Envision. Especially with the misses nagging about space. This video legit helped me make an ultimate decision. Guess I won't be making room in the driveway 😆💪🏾
The tahoe will outlast the envision for sure,,, not sure if you watch any car Wizard videos but you should, the envision in in his top 5 vehicles not to buy list! if I was you id sell it quickly
100% makes a great Overlander. My 05 Tahoe has a 6" lift, 35s, roof rack, push bumper, aftermarket rear bumper with spare tire carrier, G80 locker, on board 5.6CFM air, 360 degree lighting, and I just ordered a snorkel.
Bought one in 2002 still have it 21 years later, it has 230K on it and still love it best vehicle I ever had hands down. Took from Texas to California and went thru the Sierra Nevada mountains......over 4K mile trip, no issues.
Very nice review! I've owned several Tahoes and a Yukon and you did a really good job explaining the pros and cons. They're very easy to work on too. And if you're desperate for parts, junkyards are full of them.
I have a 2001 Tahoe Lt with 197,000 miles I absolutely love it my parents had one for years when they sold the truck it had nearly 300,000 miles on it and it was still running strong
@@BernonCars Sadly I’m probably going to have to sell it, as I can’t afford to pay for transmission repairs. Hopefully whoever buys it will fix it. I would probably cry if they just stripped it for parts. That truck has been around for most of my life.
Just picked up an 05 Suburban Z71 4x4 for less than the cost of my iPad Pro. Love it. When I relocate. It can carry everything I need plus tow my BMW. Will probably pay to ship my other vehicles or may just pick them up slowly during holiday visits for family. Currently own 6 vehicles.
I have 2005 Z71 4x4 hoe with 281,000 and it is still running strong. The only repairs so far other then fluids, tires and brakes have been a water pump, shocks and ball joints. Not too bad. I use it to yank a 4000 lbs ski boat between Florida and Michigan on a regular basis and she has never let me down.
These things are amazing I have a 2003 Yukon Denali with the 6.0 LQ4 and that thing has 316,000 miles on it and runs like a dream literally like butter. Oil changes every 2k miles pays off 😂
I change the oil a couple months late every time, it still has its color taste and smell lol then I reuse the oil for my chain saws and mower. 😮 I know rite but Biden sucks milk is $5 a gallon
One thing you gotta love about these vehicles is the amount of luxury and comfort you can get for cheap, while having the rugged look and offroad capability. They were built reliable back then and not financial dumpsters, something that is no longer seen from today's car manufacturerers. Sadly most of these have either been trashed or become rust buckets, they'd probably go extinct before their value could even go up.
I have an 03 Tahoe with a 5.3L Vortec V8. I love my truck. Yes, there are repairs at times and yes it's a bit wide. But that makes it perfect for me to make an awesome conversion. And I can take my baby up steep mountains to camp. I am not giving up my Tahoe for anything.
i have a2002 lt 4x4...233000 miles daily driver and i beat the heck out of it...new trans...new exaust (dynomax) and cats...i have fixed the common abs issues and added the front big brake upgrade...over all i got like maybe 8k into it...cold air upgrade...power tuner....tires wheels etc...i highly recomend this vehicle...i am an ase certified wonder poodle...
I loved my Grandparents 2001 Tahoe LT that they brought new in 2001. Last I heard it has almost 600,000 kilometres on it. My most favourite SUV GM ever made!
Love my 2001. Especially when on Winter vacation in Norway. Great Autobahn Vehicle too at max 75 mph. You can load this thing up with stuff and it will just crawl up the smallest roads like a goat, provided off course you have a decent AT tire like Bridgestones. It is hands down the most comfortable car when doing more than 500km in one go. Greetings from northern Germany.
I just picked up a '99 GMC Yukon pretty cheap because it has a few little problems but it's very clean and only has 145,000 miles. I got it because I wanted 4x4 but I didn't know about the G80 differential. I was excited when I found out.
BTW, I saw someone in the comments saying they had one that needed a transmission. Something like I learned while researching my purchase is that you never want to tow with the 4L60E transmission in overdrive, it's a quick way to destroy one. I'm glad I saw that because I plan on doing some towing, so I'll take it seriously.
i have an 01 tahoe z71 with 315k miles, factory motor and trans, regular oil changes and such and shes still going strong. has the typical chevy rust for the midwest but shes a keeper
I have a fully loaded 2002 Hoe w/5.3L. that I bought 3yrs ago for $3,999. It currently has 244k miles on the motor & tranny. The only thing that I had to do due to ATL’s required emissions-was buy a new Y-Pipe Catalytic Converter kit. All in I spent $450 including parts & labor. Zero mechanical issues!
These seats are better than the newer gens. The older seats are like couches, new ones like cardboard lol. I used to have an 05 escalade with 160k miles. Once of the best suvs I ever had. Never got stuck in the snow
Love these GMT800 and the GMT400 trucks! They don't make them like this anymore. These will hold up at 30 years and beyond while the newer ones will be scrap in half that time. Good video.
@@BernonCars I have an 05 Yukon Denali 6.0, lowkey trying not to regret it because its AWD instead of 4X4 OR 2WD like the Tahoe's or non Denali Yukon. but idk, do you think AWD is still good for off roading cause I've read its not
Great video! I like the detail that you got into with demonstrating and explaining the different four-wheel drive modes and the G80. Also, I came for Tahoe content, now I have to find that lifted XC90 video! I have a newer 4Runner but I'm thinking of replacing it with one of these Tahoes, and my older car is a XC70.
I have an 04 Tahoe LT with 200 thousand kilometres here in southern Canada 🇨🇦 in stock formation. And yes they do rust badly in the heavy salted areas of Canadian winters in the fenders and frame rails. Mines has been taken care of. Common issues is dash gauges going wonky and fuel sending unit float lever sometimes doesn’t work right due to age.I have mine for three years now and still love it.👍🏻👍🏻🇨🇦
Turn Signal Indicators in the Mirrors are standard on Facelift '03+ & can't remeber right if power folding was also standard or just optional. The Facelift got way more options as standard / electrical stuff, also Bose Sound System standard etc. Yes, all cool stuff but I like the 2002 like this the best. Best options & not tooooo much electrical stuff that can break.
@@BernonCars It's all cool stuff & comfy. But classics we know now as classics are that because their reliability is amazing when taking care because of what will fail can be repaired very easy. 90's & early 2000's are my favorites as Daily Driver. Comfy, safe & everything that is "new tech" & electrical stuff helps really safety, driving etc. & is somehow still able to been repaired. Newer vehicles are just Smartphones on 4 wheels & less a vehicle, so the quality. Also some stuff on the new car breaks that git nothing to do with driving & still won't start or drive because somehow connected to other electrical crap, also the whole emissions stuff etc. Those Tahoe's are somehow the best Daily Drivers. Even for me here in Germany with our huge taxes an high displacement taxes with bad emissions & also our high gas prices (even California would be cheap for me now). But the reliability is amazing, parts cheap even with the import & easy to maintain. Don't need to care where I want to drive, what weather comes around anywhere in Germany, heck whole Europe, probably the whole Eurasian Continent with the right tires 😅 In my first years drove some german manufacturers till I was open minded enough & don't believed those commercials & Fanboy talking anymore. Also loved some japanese vehicles but once I experienced a great V8 I was doneski. Like a f'ing drug 🤣 Still love my '93 SportSide C1500 but will sell it & also the '00 Camaro with the Buick V6. Just want to keep the Tahoe & looking forward for an 4th gen Catfish Camaro again but as Z28 or SS & manual transmission. Just for the summer & fun times & the Thaoe as Daily. I just hope they don't go to crazy with the taxes & gas prices over hear or I'm forced to a small 4 banger engine again or Hybrid or whatever.
Just got an ls suburban and will do same kit. Debating whether to just install different suspension now rather than the rough country when I install. Coiner get just the hardware minus suspension.
Gmt800 chevy trucks are the best era of chevy trucks for the blend of simple and rugged with also tech and comfort. The gmt400s are the ultimate in reliability but lack the comfort unless you go to say a denali or escalade. They really made some quality vehicles in the early 2000s
I have an '02 Yukon with a Rough Country leveling kit and Bilstein shocks. These are best without traction control and without autoride. What happens when rough country lift starts to wear out?
Oh yeah I would imagine they’re better without the BS. This one’s been starting to bounce and float a lot on the road lol. Shocks are already worn out and my buddy really only drives this in town
Good video, amazing trucks. What you said about BDS the company is true but, you can't wear out leveling keys my man. Probably just need some good shocks.
I awapped my transfercase for an np241c, 2" level with all Kryptonite UCA's, tie-rods, and idler bracket. RedHead gear box..brand.new transmission with 250k on the rig. She's mean.
Excellent trucks. But they’re not real off-roaders. “Overlanding” is what they can do. Any real trails you’re going to get in trouble quick, but it’ll have zero issue taking you out in the boonies on some light moderate trails/Terrian. The reason is, this body style uses torsion bars, they’re wide, and heavy. Coil spring front suspension is much better.
Great vid on the truck! I'm in the market for one for future overlanding! I think they are underappreciated but I guess this keeps the prices lower... They definitely are not the most advanced or exciting overlanders but they sure are capable! One honest question though... Can you fit a 4x8 plywood in the back? I'd love to use this as an all-rounder vehicle! Thanks in advance!
I am 03 Tahoe I was offered 12k From a Chevrolet dealership and 6000.00 worth of options towards a new Tahoe I told my Tahoe has something the new Tahoe doesn't have. I ride on a body on frame Silverado chassis The modern plastic fantastic Tahoe is 2 Tahoe's put together a unibody .he was surprised I knew about that....
Ooof, I'm like 14.6mpg on my V6 4runner after adding bumper, sliders, skid, lift, roof rack. I know the feeling man, especially after moving to Canada , miss that $/gallon prices :(
Not really. The 5.3 started with oil consumption because of valve control (you know, when you cruise it disables some cylinders etc. People with this problem or not wanting to occur disable it in a shop) & also People in general complain about the 3rd Gen Tahoe. Not as good of reliability like 2nd Gen (often considered "built like tanks" when well maintained & taking care of) with more smaller & bigger issues occurring over the time. For my taste all the common issue on the 2nd Gen are worth fixing it. Even if the Transmission should fail, because of the amount of money you put in & won't get such an good SUV. Just invest more when buying to get a well maintained & "rust free" one & your good. When it comes to 3rd Gen you have more to depend on luck instead of well maintained etc.
I own an 03 tahoe. Z71, gt5 rpo code (4.10s) and the g80 locker. I have 285/70r17s on a 1.25 inch rear and 2 inch front lift. And it has more clearance than yours does. But like you said, rough country [sucks]. Ps driving in auto4, you can burn up the np246 tcase clutches.
If anyone wants tips on how to extend the suspension travel of a gmt800 coil sprung suv, here's how: moog 81069 springs (1.25 inches taller than factory), bilstien 5100 extended travel shocks front and rear, and you can settle with maxing the torsion bar keys all the way out for height or getting aftermarket keys for extra height but you'll need to get high caster upper control arms and extended shocks up front. Again, the bilstien 5100s are amazing on mine. Rides factory with 33s and I can cruise down trails and be comfy
The Eaton G80 is OK, not foolproof. My Silverado 2500HD 4X4 & GM use them as standard equipment for slippery roads, steep hills and deep ruts where one tire will lose traction. Sometimes in real mud you have gone too far under once the other side kicks in to help. For those situations nothing short of a full locker and grabby tires will do. Everyone wants a lift and big tires today. It is just the look. Like bellbottoms were in the 70s disco days. Big tires stress the whole suspension system and axles. Lifts stress drive shafts and steering. Companies make big bucks selling double tough replacement parts because you will need them. Try peddling fat oversize tires on a bicycle and you will learn quickly why they don't come that way. But surfer beach boardwalk ones do. Fortunately GMs were engineered to last, so generally take the extra stress, if you don't always mash your right foot. If you are serious about off road travel here is an old guy clue. In the Sierra Nevada mountains near Yosemite where I live I have pulled a couple of Dick Cepek and Rancho city built beauties out with an old 50s Dodge 4x4 1/2 ton. Reason being wide tires are great for looks and sand, but they want to 'float' over terrain. And once bogged down they float and spin. In slippery/ broken dirt, deep snow & mud they make life worse. Thin and tall will get you as far back as you can go. All they way into 'no one can help you' territory. I know it is not sexy, but they will do much better in the wet and sloppy stuff. Just put together a narrow off-road tire and simple steel wheel package to slap on for your safari trips into the wilderness. WWII jeeps came that way and they worked everywhere. They also stress the suspension parts and bearings less. PS: please do not attempt to make a Silverado/ Tahoe/ Suburban/ Denali into a rock crawler. Short of thousands of dollars and a lot of modifications you will get very frustrated.
Here's a test to everyone's electrical knowledge. 2005 Tahoe. New battery. Starter is good. Turn the key and everything comes on, but the starter doesn't turn over. Try connecting a wire from the 87 pin on the relay to the positive on the battery with the key in the run position and nothing. Tried it for hours. Put the key in the on position and tried to straighten the wheel but it wouldn't turn, and I tried it one more time and it started right up. Parked it with a straight wheel, shut it off but it wouldn't turn over. Wiggled the wheel and it still wouldn't turn over. The ground at the back of the engine "Feels" tight but couldn't climb back there to check for sure. Anybody experience something like this?
I had a similar issue with mine. Starter tested good but was weak compared to a new one. Replaced the starter and all has been good. I had a similar issue with fuel pump. Was intermittent issue untill i replaced it with a new one. Just cause it test good dont mean that its legit. It can be slowly going bad.

Oh wow nice! That's great!! It'll do another 244 no problem!
Good video.
Thank you! Seriously. I would love to get me an 05ish Yukon Denali XL. Handsome truck
@@BernonCars I have an 05 Yukon Denali 6.0, lowkey trying not to regret it because its AWD instead of 4X4 OR 2WD like the Tahoe's or non Denali Yukon. but idk, do you think AWD is still good for off roading cause I've read its not
Excellent review!!!
Thank you!!
Thank you! I’m glad you liked it!! Haha plenty of Volvo videos!!
Still daily drive my 2002 Chevrolet suburban with 215,000 miles still drive smooth like brand new Ac, heater and everything still works
They are charming little things!
I have an 04 Tahoe LT with 200 thousand kilometres here in southern Canada 🇨🇦 in stock formation. And yes they do rust badly in the heavy salted areas of Canadian winters in the fenders and frame rails. Mines has been taken care of. Common issues is dash gauges going wonky and fuel sending unit float lever sometimes doesn’t work right due to age.I have mine for three years now and still love it.👍🏻👍🏻🇨🇦
Sweet!!
My friends Tahoe in Maine isn't that rusty. 🇺🇸
That wiper fluid dispenser gag caught me off guard 🤣 that’s so cool
Turn Signal Indicators in the Mirrors are standard on Facelift '03+ & can't remeber right if power folding was also standard or just optional. The Facelift got way more options as standard / electrical stuff, also Bose Sound System standard etc. Yes, all cool stuff but I like the 2002 like this the best. Best options & not tooooo much electrical stuff that can break.
Ahh yes I agree. Not crazy about dealing with electrical BS lol
Well done. Informative and good narration.
Thank you!
Just got an ls suburban and will do same kit. Debating whether to just install different suspension now rather than the rough country when I install. Coiner get just the hardware minus suspension.
Nice, yeah I think you should. The RC shocks blow out fast!
I love my Tahoe, and Yukon.
That's excellent!
Great video. This dude has a sick truck
Yeah he does 😆
I got a 2005 tahoe lt with 200,000 on it. It is great off road vehicle. I love driving it in the snow and mud.
That’s awesome to hear!! Keep on trucking haha
Gmt800 chevy trucks are the best era of chevy trucks for the blend of simple and rugged with also tech and comfort. The gmt400s are the ultimate in reliability but lack the comfort unless you go to say a denali or escalade.
They really made some quality vehicles in the early 2000s
Yes they are, I totally agree with everything you said!
nice video and i love that 40 series sound
Thank you! Yeah it’s the perfect sound with that 5.3!
Dude! Great video thanks for posting. Totally cleared up my confusion on my Tahoe.
I’m glad I was able to help!!
It’s just beautiful at everything
It totally is!
My 01 Tahoe LT fully loaded 4x4 is 4,000 miles from 300k, I’m the second owner. The only thing we’ve replaced is the alternator, brakes, and battery.
Nice, man! Beautiful trucks
Alot of people say you need a 4wd when dealing with mud but with my 04 tahoe that's 2wd and has the g80, its alot better then some 4wds
Great video! Did all the z71 trims come with the g80 locker?
Thank you! I'm not sure honestly!
*"is reliable to take me anywhere?"*
Maybe to a few planets probably
Where’d you find such a clean 02 lol, got a black 03 LT
My friend Julian and his family have had it since new!!
Gmt800 z71 the best hidden gem 💎
100%
She's mean.
Ohh woww nice!
Do the 285/75R16s rub? I want more sidewall but I'm stuck choosing between 265/75R16 and 285/75R16.
They shouldn't rub with a minimal lift but they might if you're at stock height
Awesome video! Everything I needed to learn about mine. What kind of exhaust did you put? Sounds real good
Thank you! It’s a Flowmaster 40 Series Muffler
Thank you! One of these would definitely be a good choice.
I’m honestly not sure about the plywood actually!
Good commentary sir
Thank you much!
Great video
Thank you!
A very nicely executed video
Thank you!
I am 03 Tahoe I was offered 12k
From a Chevrolet dealership and 6000.00 worth of options towards a new Tahoe
I told my Tahoe has something the new Tahoe doesn't have.
I ride on a body on frame Silverado chassis
The modern plastic fantastic Tahoe is 2 Tahoe's put together a unibody
.he was surprised I knew about that....
Damn, the old one is absolutely the keeper

Yes it is....
I hate modern plastic fantastic car's and SUVs
Easier than what I wanted to do, thanks

I just bought an ‘01 with 47k miles, 1 owner.
NICE! Thats a cream puff!
Well done!
5:03 typical reverse noise 😮💨
6:38 noise of a machine that won’t die 😅
Gotta love em!!!
8:06 the fuel needle got nervous because of the camera 😂
*Cries in 10 miles per gallon*
LOL right
Ooof, I'm like 14.6mpg on my V6 4runner after adding bumper, sliders, skid, lift, roof rack. I know the feeling man, especially after moving to Canada , miss that $/gallon prices :(
@@likeasumbody403 4th Gen?
I get about 15 mpg
Should be getting over 15 🥴
Good video ! thanks
Thank you!
Same with the 2007 Tahoe?
Honestly not sure about those. Haven’t messed around, but I would think so!
When it comes to 3rd Gen you have more to depend on luck instead of well maintained etc.
great video! thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Great vid… ty
Thank you!!
Good review
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Relay is bad
Awesome vehicles, the best ones are 2004-2006
I agree!

I’m glad you enjoyed!! That’s a shame!!
You said it’s 6000 lbs but it’s just barely over 5000 lbs. That’s what my 2005 5.3L 4x4 Yukon weighs.
Whoops that was my mistake
I appreciate all the notes!
My 2004 Tahoe interior is not really that desirable. GM interior quality from the 2000s isn't great. But gosh I love that SUV
They’re so good
