That Tahoe looks nice! I've done a leveling kit up front and a spacer in the rear for some additional clearance for articulation. Think an add a leaf would do the same. Also maybe a 2 inch body lift too. For me It's a lot of fun having additional space for the family. My primary wheeling rig is an 86 Suzuki Samurai in which the family may have trouble fitting in.
I have a GMT-400 Suburban and the upgrade I'm most pleased with is the full Powerstop Z36 brake kit with the powder coated calipers. The stock brakes are a weak point on this platform and the Powerstop brakes are amazing. And they're cheaper than OEM brakes from the dealer. You'll want Part No. KC1970-36 I replaced all my front end parts with HD Moog or GM parts. In my case I got TA K02's for what you paid for those milestars. I also have an HT-383E engine swap with JB headers and Magnaflow header back exhaust with performance cats plus a performance tune. Love this platform. Amazing truck in all weather. Easy and inexpensive to work on. Drives great in town and on the highway.
Odd. I have a GMT-800 Suburban, and it’s brakes are phenomenal. It stops faster and truer than the 2017 Nissan Altima and 2016 Hyundai Sonata I had before. Of course, it’s 4-wheel discs, so perhaps that’s part of it.
So glad I found this build. My 99/2000 Tahoe needs some love. You don't see many on YT treated as real off road worthy, which they totally are. Looking forward to more! 😎
I wish I never sold my 5.7 Vortec powered GMC Yukon. It looked exactly look this lol. It was an amazing truck. I've always loved the 88-98 GM trucks, especially the 96-98 examples. Cool budget rig Jason. Love it!

I hope you told the person you bought this from about your channel. Imagine how cool this would be for them to watch. After all their memories they have in that car and it getting a second life.
Best thing I ever did to my 95 suburban is the rear old style manual fill air shocks that I pumped up to 120psi. Ots amazing how its firmed the ride up not uncomfortable firm but firm like you know there is a bump but not shake your teeth out of ur head . I highly recommend doing it on any full size obs suv.
So, 35's fit without too much fuss. Good to know. I'll have to consider that for my Tahoe. I'll wait and see what you do next. It looks so darn good with those 35's, absolutely love it.
This is very inspiring! I just bought a complete 99 Tahoe chassis, to put under a 60s truck, and I think I'm just gonna put 35s on it, no lift, no 4 link.
I think the ride on long rocky roads is why I like pickups more than jeeps. Looking at replacing my XJ with one of these. Great video, it covers whats needed.

Oh you're in for it now, big tires do interesting things to old trucks :) Looks great, awesome project. This is awesome, I’ve been watching your videos to help me work on my 99 suburban, and now you have a 90s Tahoe. This will make my life a lot easier. I studied your brake upgrade video for a while and just went ahead and installed Wilwood disks on all 4 corners of my suburban a little over a month ago. New rotors, calipers, brake lines, proportional valve and master cylinder. Did a lot of changes to it so far this year. And to top it off, I just realized we are aren’t too far away from each other. I was wondering why that area looked familiar during your test drive. Would be great if I could show you my work in person once I’m done with the changes and break in process.
Wow, you went Wilwood on your Suburban... that sounds expensive but awesome! I was going to do the Powerstop brakes in front and just refresh the rear drums on this... mind me asking what kits from Wilwood you went with, a ballpark price and can you run the stock 16" wheels with them?
AutoEdits hows it going! Yea I was looking to see what options were out there with little modifications. I found a shop called little shop mfg, and they make their adapters in house. I asked them a bunch of questions for months and they helped me out. For the front and rears I did 14 inch breaks, 6 piston calipers front and 4 piston rears. They do say you need 18 inch wheels for the 14 inch brakes and 20 inch wheels for their 16 inch brakes. For just the brakes alone, it was a little over 4K. It’s a lot but this is just one of those things I definitely wanted high quality. I started the brake in procedure but realized I had a leak in a line I made so I had to replace it. Once I have a chance I’ll be able to bleed it again and test it. Also replaced the differential because it was a few drives away from destroying itself. This has been my project for a few years and I’m glad you got that Tahoe. You also got the bumper I’m looking into installing!
We just completely replaced all of the front steering and suspension parts on our 99 2dr Tahoe. All the parts are Moog and Polyperformance. The parts alone topped 950$. Next is swapping out to the big block drivetrain and a 6in Rough Country lift and possibly 38inch meats!!!
I was about to sell my obs Tahoe z71 but after watching this I decided to keep it. It already has 35 inch coopers on the stock wheels, it’s gna be my overland rig for sure now.
I'm looking forward to watching your series with this truck.I have 1992 suburban where I just put a 350 four bolt main in to replace the tired old 350 .I also have a 2-in lift to level the truck out. I'll be doing small upgrades to make it more dependable and survivable doing overlanding trips and because I have the 700R4 transmission, I'll be looking to beef that up in the future.
How does the 700R4 compare to the 4L60 in my Tahoe? Give this video a watch th-cam.com/video/SLxA9hlW9y8/w-d-xo.html this platform does so well on long trips!
Jason, having watched your channel for years, and knowing how your plans for a vehicle can change, I look forward to the day you decide to take the Tahoe to Tahoe by way of the Rubicon Trail.
You just blew my mind with that one... If I could get this thing capable enough to survive the Rubicon would be EPIC! But to take the Tahoe to Tahoe thing may just happen soon because of how awesome that sounds... thank you!
Love your videos. They are always fun to watch and entertaining! Also, that Tahoe has me feeling nostalgic, riding around in my Mom’s Tahoe with the 5.7 vortec. Simpler times...
Right! I can't quite explain the nostalgia and how it impacts the feeling of wrenching or driving on it... it's not like it's a classic car or anything... just very interesting that it's real.
Some of the the stuff will be affordable but some high quality comes at a price. I was shocked how I was able to replace both side mirrors and inner door handle for cheap! That bumper on the other hand... not cheap... but really cool.
Also, you want kryptonite tierods and if sticking with stock control arms and such just use Moog parts for the rest. If you put towing air bags in the back you can get rid of the bump stops for better ride quality and adjustable lift lol. Mine had them and it would raise 3" or so from empty bag to 50psi
@@AutoEdits did you change the gearing on the ram? I wanted to get a newer 4th gen ram but found out the 8speeds after 2012 can't be regeared because of the design of the front diff being welded on or something like that :( Stuck with a 3.21 ratio unless you can find one that has 3.92s factory but not sure if that'd be enough to handle 37s
@@AutoEdits Only place I know that carries them is Rockauto. See what they have by chance. They're tan and green and are under the "heavy duty" tab, or the "premium" tab.
I have a k2500 suburban on 33s. Doing some east coast wheeling its was able to hang with my buddies' icon 4 runner and a lockered jeep comanche. It's more comfortable off road than either of them and is just about as capable. It was 600 bucks, pulls 10k, and it never breaks down more than 50 bucks worth. I can't ask for more than that
Unfortunately not too much support for heavy duty steering duty parts. Cognito makes a pitman arm brace. Rough country makes a steering stabilizer. FFR fabrication and Phatphabz makes heavy duty tie rods, if you don't mind heim joints. Sway bar delete is free of course.
I have a couple of K2500 pickups and they both rub with aftermarket wheels and 33x12.50s. I'm definitely going to install the tires on a set of stock wheels. I have cranked the torsion bars. Mine rub on the front bumper and the rear of the front fender. . And I've trimmed both!
I had 35s on a 1975 k5 with a 4-inch lift kit back in the 80s; frame cracked on one side right above front axle, got it welded, needed repaired often. I think I will keep my low mileage 97 Tahoe on the pavement.
I relate to this video so much. I have a 2wd Dodge Ram 1500 6speed manual regular cab short bed. I installed 4.10 gears and have a Detroit locker in the stock Chrysler 9.25 rear axle. It goes off road no problem on my 33” BFG KM3s. I have a new 4x4 but I’m not taking it hardcore off-roading because I don’t want to scratch it lol. My 2wd can go all the places I need it to being in south Florida and a trail like what you’re on in this video is perfect and I agree I could do that all day too just riding with the windows down and soaking it all in 😎
The problem here is the IFS. It is a weak link and with any hard use it will break. It is notorious for lifting wheels. Installing a locker will make it even more vulnerable. So yeah you got 35s and a bomb waiting to go off in the front axle.
This was THE best I mean THE BEST "tire" vid I've ever seen my guy!💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯 you absolutely are great it was a pleasure sir watching this thank for a piece of your knowledge, time, effort and love for a legendary underrated machine! I currently own a 94' GMC suburban slt and I absolutely love it! Wish I had a way of showing ya but maybe later I'll drop some vids of it?🤷🏽♂️ I love your tahoe especially that Forrest green, don't ever get rid of it ever you'll regret it I swear lol I say this from experience too as I've owned and sold a handful of obs chevys and gmcs!!
Pretty cool to see where I grew up in Canyon Country after randomly searching stuff on TH-cam for tire fitment on a k1500! Recognized the area as soon as you made that turn on Via Princessa haha and that spot off Soledad near the tunnel too 🤙
just subscribed because i had one of these tahoes.... a 96 and sometimes i miss it.....had great room and just a great truck....yes do updates on this suv ....maybe a roof rack and lighting?........will be watching!
I used all moog components on my 2005 tahoe for steering and it was just right .. had it for another 6 years before I sold it and it drove just like the day I rebuilt it
The weak point on steering with bigger tires is pitman and idler arms cognito makes a bracket that braces both arms my new arms only lasted 30k with large tires so I will be installing the kit soon to help prevent failure
Love the truck! Brings me back memories of my parents 2 door tahoe on how easy and fun it was to drive. Can wait to find one soon and build a similar truck once again. Btw where is was wash/off-roading film at. thanks
Ditch the front bumper ad a bash bar with a skid plate light bar and winch setup !!!! Soldier tank for sure And don’t forget the back clearance as well shorten up the long exhaust tuck it under the belly
Great suggestions! I just finished the bumper and winch install and it is already looking more adventure ready. I dig the exhaust thing as well... thanks!
So awesome! Love this Generation GM truck. Just found a company that sells a kit/components to do a solid axle swap on the GMT400 chassis (88-98). I’ll shoot you the link. They based the kit around a D60 from the 05+ F250.
I watched that video... I don't have budget for that yet... especially since I just spent money on gears and locker for what I have. I'm going to rock it like this for a bit and see how it goes. Thanks for showing me that... I really dig seeing all the options!
Just picked up a 1997 k1500 extended cab going to do the same thing as you soon once I get it running again looks like you near me hopefully I’ll catch you driving around
The high end mevotech front end parts seem to hold up pretty good on mine. 4.56 will be perfect thats what I have. I went from rancho shocks to bilstein. You can put a 1 or 2 inch block in the rear to raise it or add a leaf. The front you can raise the torsion bars 1.5 to 2 inches max
That's what's up... WHITE LETTERS OUT!!! I'm not the only one who thinks this looks so good on a vehicle!!! I get so mad when I see a person with them on this inside I'm like ugh!!! Lol 👍👍💯🔥
I just did the front end on my 1998 k3500, used mostly moog stuff, and bilstein shocks, very happy with it. If you are going to use stock control arms, the OBS trucks with the heavier engine (diesel, 454) have forged lower control arms vs stamped steel, so that could be a good upgrade. My understanding is most the lift kits for these trucks retain the factory lower control arms. There a vid on my channel of the process, made some good mistakes in that one haha but turned out great in the end! Love the tahoe, this is gonna be a fun build!
@@AutoEdits To make it heavier duty, just use 2500 or 3500 series control arms. The front of the chassis is the same on all models. Just heavier duty control arms, different hubs, and heavier duty torsion bar springs. It may use the same control arms as the GMT-800. If it does, I believe that they are all forged. And please stop calling your truck an OBS. OBS is a Ford thing to describe older body style F series trucks. Yours is a GMT-400, which came after the C/K Rounded Line trucks. Good luck with your GMT-400 project.
I had a 92 k2500 suburban and I replaced every ball joint, tie rod, and bushing basically every 2 yrs before I just went to solid axle. I used the best they had on the market and it just didn't last. I miss my truck
I was happy with moog parts when i rebuilt my entire front end on my 97 k1500. I eventually switched to acdelco and aftermarket parts when i did the SAS. But i traditionally like acdelco or moog when it comes to my 97 k1500, 05 tahoe and 07 silverado.
@@AutoEdits both those companies have higher quality parts moog is problem solver and acdelco is the professional series. They cost more but are a closer comparison to OEM or better quality. Cant wait to see where you are takimg the OBS I was suprised to see a 35 fit so easily.
Thanks for this vid! I've been trying to find something similar to take camping on similar trails. I have a built Cherokee on stock axles and 35s and a GMC Envoy. I want to sell the Jeep but I wouldn't have a trail/ camp rig anymore, cause the 'voy is nice, low mile, not very capable, and has sentential value. Looks like a cheap Tahoe is a STRONG contender for a replacement! V8 refresh for towing, rear lunchbox locker, has plenty of space to sleep and store gear, and maybe a wench (or 2 😉). Thanks again for the idea!
I'm looking at buying a 1995 Chevy Tahoe 4 x 4 $2,000 it has the throttle body injected 305 not the vortec motor or push button 4-wheel drive it actually has the lever on the floor, this will only be my second Chevy product I've ever owned but the electric seats have to go LOL can't wait to see how this journey goes I see how popular are these vehicles are so why not
@@AutoEdits yeah I know nothing about Chevy square bodies or anything on these tahoes but give me a classic 60s Chevy truck then I know so this is going to be something new to me
Since the front is only rated to 33" tires max, that's what I did to my '99 Suburban K1500, even though I have the 3.42:1 gears. I've been driving it this way for 50K miles now, no problem. Next will be a lower-mileage '99 K2500 suburban so its 9.25" IFS can take 35s, and there's actually a locker for it, from ARB.
I dig the hell out of this project, I'd love to see it progress into a full on overland rig over time, especially on a tight budget...
That's the plan!

Right! I can't quite explain the nostalgia and how it impacts the feeling of wrenching or driving on it... it's not like it's a classic car or anything... just very interesting that it's real.
I’ve got a 97 Yukon and I absolutely LOVE it. Just dialing it in. Still keeping my ZJ!
Nice collection!
Always had a soft spot for the squared off look of that generation of Chevy trucks.
Me too!
YES!!!! More Tahoe videos!!!!!
Okiedokie!
Crazy how you fit 35s on a stock Tahoe. I put 33s on my 09 2500 Burb and i've got quite a bit of trimming to do in the front. Great vid!
Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to share!
So glad to see something most ppl can afford. Awesome
Some of the the stuff will be affordable but some high quality comes at a price. I was shocked how I was able to replace both side mirrors and inner door handle for cheap! That bumper on the other hand... not cheap... but really cool.
I absolutely agree love your work and channel. Great job
I absolutely agree love your work and channel. Great job
All very great suggestions! Thanks!
I went all holley proforged for all my front end parts, cunningham machine steering shaft, and red head steering box on my two door yukon
Thanks for all the great suggestions! Forgot that Holley offered stuff for this!
Nice, Im very excited to see the videos ahead for this Project !! Always enjoy watching your builds 👍🏻
Thanks! 👍
You inspired me to go for 33’s. If 35’s fit, 33’s should be a breeze.
Hell ya man I've always wanted to do this exact same kind of build on one of these older tahoes! Definitely living through you on this one!!
Thanks!
@@AutoEdits did you change the gearing on the ram? I wanted to get a newer 4th gen ram but found out the 8speeds after 2012 can't be regeared because of the design of the front diff being welded on or something like that :(
Stuck with a 3.21 ratio unless you can find one that has 3.92s factory but not sure if that'd be enough to handle 37s
Mevotech TTX for the front end parts 1,000%! By far the best off the shelf front end parts I've ever used. Lifetime warranty too!
I'll check what they offer for this.
I can't ask for more than that
I absolutely love the way you say it never breaks down more than 50 bucks worth.... LOVE IT! Your sir are a true car guy and I'm glad you are here.
Very interesting to learn this!
Can’t wait for the re-gearing video. I have 98 suburban and it’s time to re gear after I put 35s
My 2wd can go all the places I need it to being in south Florida and a trail like what you’re on in this video is perfect and I agree I could do that all day too just riding with the windows down and soaking it all in 😎
This right here! I'm looking to do a locker on the Ram soon!
@@AutoEdits can’t wait to see that video!
The problem here is the IFS. It is a weak link and with any hard use it will break. It is notorious for lifting wheels. Installing a locker will make it even more vulnerable. So yeah you got 35s and a bomb waiting to go off in the front axle.
All valid points but this rig was built to do this th-cam.com/video/SLxA9hlW9y8/w-d-xo.html
And it does a great job.
Thanks so much...I do love these things!
There definitely is something about reasonable budget builds that are just as "built" as it needs to be!
I completely agree!
I’m so excited for this build!! Love the channel sir, you inspire me to do builds on my channel! 👍🏼
Awesome! Thank you!
Pretty cool to see where I grew up in Canyon Country after randomly searching stuff on TH-cam for tire fitment on a k1500! Recognized the area as soon as you made that turn on Via Princessa haha and that spot off Soledad near the tunnel too 🤙
Howdy!
just subscribed because i had one of these tahoes.... a 96 and sometimes i miss it.....had great room and just a great truck....yes do updates on this suv ....maybe a roof rack and lighting?........will be watching!
Howdy and thanks for the sub!
Great job There is reason why the HMVV/HUMMER was designed with 37s and low center gravity.
Bigger tires are just a magical thing 😍
Such truth!!! lol
I used all moog components on my 2005 tahoe for steering and it was just right .. had it for another 6 years before I sold it and it drove just like the day I rebuilt it
Awesome to hear... thanks!
The weak point on steering with bigger tires is pitman and idler arms cognito makes a bracket that braces both arms my new arms only lasted 30k with large tires so I will be installing the kit soon to help prevent failure
They don't seem to make stuff for the 95. I'm going with Kryptonite steering components.
Love the truck! Brings me back memories of my parents 2 door tahoe on how easy and fun it was to drive. Can wait to find one soon and build a similar truck once again. Btw where is was wash/off-roading film at. thanks
Suspension wise best bang for the buck with great quality rough country lift kit with shocks, and steering and joints wise I went with proforged
Thanks!
Ditch the front bumper ad a bash bar with a skid plate light bar and winch setup !!!! Soldier tank for sure
And don’t forget the back clearance as well shorten up the long exhaust tuck it under the belly
Great suggestions! I just finished the bumper and winch install and it is already looking more adventure ready. I dig the exhaust thing as well... thanks!
Love it! First generation Yukons/Tahoes are my favourite!
They are such good rigs!
This trucks amazingly clean! I hate it here in the rust belt New York for this reason. My frame will never look that good lol
Just picked up a 1997 k1500 extended cab going to do the same thing as you soon once I get it running again looks like you near me hopefully I’ll catch you driving around
Howdy!
Lol 👍👍💯🔥
HA!
I put 285’s on my bone stock 95 Tahoe 2-door; LUCKILY it had factory 3.73’s and it was a dog..I can’t imagine 315’s! Literally gutless
I don't really notice that big of a difference. Same amount of dogginess...lol
Thanks for this... heading over now to do some research...lol!
Can't wait for all your videos to come your doing so well
Thanks, I'm glad someone is watching!
Awesome tires! Looks great with the RWL! Definitely show more! Eager to see the gears.
Thanks!
The gmt400 trucks and SUVs are some of the funest and easily build able trucks out there
It is such a great platform!
I had a 92 k2500 suburban and I replaced every ball joint, tie rod, and bushing basically every 2 yrs before I just went to solid axle. I used the best they had on the market and it just didn't last. I miss my truck
Thanks for sharing... Interesting to hear this.
Great video 📹 👍 I live in sun valley 25min from you can't wait to see your other videos
More to come!
Nice start to the build looks like tons of fun
This thing is ridiculously fun!
I was happy with moog parts when i rebuilt my entire front end on my 97 k1500. I eventually switched to acdelco and aftermarket parts when i did the SAS. But i traditionally like acdelco or moog when it comes to my 97 k1500, 05 tahoe and 07 silverado.
Thanks for this!
I'm all about all of that comment!
I'm looking at buying a 1995 Chevy Tahoe 4 x 4 $2,000 it has the throttle body injected 305 not the vortec motor or push button 4-wheel drive it actually has the lever on the floor, this will only be my second Chevy product I've ever owned but the electric seats have to go LOL can't wait to see how this journey goes I see how popular are these vehicles are so why not
Good luck and have fun!
@@AutoEdits yeah I know nothing about Chevy square bodies or anything on these tahoes but give me a classic 60s Chevy truck then I know so this is going to be something new to me
You should eventually do an 1983 - 1997 Ford Ranger with the Twin I Beam. Would love to see an awesome build with an TTB
I like those... seen a lot of them done well. I just accidentally ended up with this thing.
@@AutoEdits i love both my 95 Ranger Twin I beam manual hubs. And my 93' F250 Twin I beam automatic hubs. Both work great off road
Maybe I shouldnt be so nervous about putting 33s on my stock 2002... happy to find this 3 years later.
White letters out.....HELL YEA!!!!! Can't wait till the next new video notification.
I really appreciate that!
i am so pumped for this build... unbelievably pumped. haha!
I’m glad!
Really cool truck, like the direction this is going.
Thanks!
