Constantine was always a favorite of mine! A hidden gem I recently showed friends of mine (who are very critically of movies and have a really good taste in my opinion) - they were shocked that they never heard about that movie and really enjoyed it
I always assumed the fact that Mammon was inhabiting the guy who held the spear of destiny was why he was seemingly immortal (he died when he got hit by the car and Mammon inhabited him). This is backed by the fact that the guy does everything Mammon wanted of him, because it was Mammon. I mean the spear could hold power but I truly believe that his possession by the prince of hell explains all we saw.
Demons can be harmed by holy relics. Mammon can't cross planes, unless possessing exceptionally powerful psychics after a ritual involving divine help. A not psychic man holding the holiest of all relics, one bathed in the blood of Christ was possessed by Mammon. Yeah, ok sure. Oooooooooor, Gabriel did the whispering in the ear thing because he wanted the relic for the ritual.
@@ekscalybur - So why did he have a demonic mark on him and why did all the animals die as he walked by? The "holy" relic doing that? Seems poorly reasoned IMO.

Tilda Swinton was perfect for this part - she looks EXACTLY like a Bernini angel - especially at the end when she's frozen in place. Her pose reminds me of the angel in The Ecstasy of St. Teresa by Bernini.

I love your Intro music. Its calming depressing and happy. AND! I can watch it at midnight without fear of SCREAMING my sound speakers and bothering neighbors :) and CONSTANTINE with Keanu Reeves is MASTERPIECE
Yes! Constantine is a masterpiece! My husband and I are so waiting for news about the next Constantine movie! It's been years and we watched a video where Keanu and Constantine director and producer talk about making the next one! We got so excited!
I thought it was because Constantine threw his soul into hell with the ritual, and Angela just went there naturally by technically committing suicide, so for her to come back Constantine just had to revive her, but for him to come back he needed some sort of wakeup call.
Also yes, that Satanic Bible did come from Hell; there was a scene originally planned where Constantine went into Hell to retrieve it from an old church, but the scene was scrapped due to pacing.
I loved Tilda Swinton as Gabriel, just perfect in my view. I heard another Constantine is being made, Constantine 2 and if so I really hope most of the original cast comes back
I'm sure there are tons of comments on it already, but I'm quickly burning through your videos, and had to mention that I can't believe that you listed the cast, and left off Gavin Rossdale from Bush played Balthasar....
I don't remember what year I first saw the movie, Constantine. I liked it so much that I have the DVD in my small collection of movies. I can't wait to be able to see the second one. I'm hoping they are able to do it justice. Thank you for explaining things about the movie. Great job.
It breaks my heart that there was never a sequel to the movie bc I really think it's one of a kind. There's so much world-building without hurting the pacing. Even though this version of Constantine is not British or like the comics, he's still very charismatic and an amazing character. Can you talk about the demons and angels in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina? Some of them are kind of interesting.
I always loved this movie, you could have a look at teen wolf which is a series with a whole lot of creatures and lore. Slow to start with but gets more expanded a few seasons in
Constantine is one of my all-time favorite movies and I think part of that reason is because Keanu Reeves is perfect for this particular casting. I have watched the animated movies, and also the tv series and they all have something to recommend them, but I believe that this movie is the best of the bunch. Thank you for your review.
This is always been one of my top five favorite movies and I've seen it so many times. This with Bill and Ted made Keanu Reeves one of my favorites. Obviously the matrix came and that blew him up but those are the movies that did it for me
I swear Peter was one of my all time favorite portrayals of the devil..... right behind Pachino in the Devil's Advocate and just ahead of Vigo Mortensen in The Prophecy
This is a great movie. Couple corrections.First Angels are neither male or female, they are unisex. So saying Tilda Swinton is portraying a male is incorrect. Second, you keep calling Gabriel a half angel when in fact Gabriel is an Archangel. I think a tenet you seem to be missing in your synopsis is that angels are meant to reflect the will of God. Gabriel, through misguided intentions, is enacting their own will by attempting to elevate mankind. Not only are they subverting God's plan for the world by working to release Hell on Earth, they are committing the greater sin of passing judgement, which only God has the authority to do. Obviously Lucifer would be pretty well aquainted with this concept and the punishment for it. THIS is why Gabriel loses God's favour and is made mortal. I hope this may give you a new perspective on the film, and may make some of the pieces fall into place a bit better. For example how Gabriel is able to destroy Balthazar without even raising a finger. Also I do realize that John calls Gabriel a half-breed in the church, when he is angry that his efforts aren't enough to clean his slate saying "you're the one that should go to Hell half-breed". My interpretation is that this is an insult rather than a definition. While telling Gabriel off he slanders them, comparing them to the regular half-breed influence peddlers, when Gabriel is a direct (meaning they appear to people) messenger of God's will,. Famously it is Gabriel who appears to Mary and tells her she will give birth to Jesus. Hardly comparable to someone behind the scenes who would "nudge" you in one direction or the other. Just some food for thought for you. I definitely agree that this is a great movie though. I've rewatched it many times myself :)
The movie states that in order to be on earth, angels and demons alike must be half breed so by that logic even Gabriel, an archangel, has to abide by these rules struck between heavrn and hell. He also said gabriel was portrayed as male OR androgynous
I loved this film, and when Keanu said in an interview that he would love to be John Constantine again I nearly shot my bolt! I loved the Hellblazer comics and Keanu's version blew me away! Loved it, still do and it would be fantastic to see him reprise his role as John Constantine
Constantine is one of my favourite films. I too love the way we are thrown into an already established world and the film doesn’t hold our hand the whole way through
For a bit of extra info, the Spear of Destiny in the film (based on one located in Germany) wasn't made by WB's props department, but by Tony Swatton of Sword and the Stone in Burbank, CA, just a short trip up Victory Blvd, from Warner Studios. It's now in a building a few blocks from its old location, which used to be located half a block from "Doc Brown's" house in Back to the Future (the Burger King is still in operation).
Balthazar plead with Mammon (the one he had been working for this entire time, just like the rest of the demons who wanted hell on earth to be a thing) who was in the guy who held the spear. And I do not think he was not destroyed for good, he simply was sent back to hell instead of being resurrected back to earth by Mammon as he was pleading to be. Gabriel was simply there to let Mammon out through the psychic.
It was confirmed by the director that it was gabriel that Balthazar was asking to redirect him because only angels can resurrect. But you are right he was probably sent back to hell not really destroyed for good 👍
On my first viewing of this movie I was indifferent towards it, but over the years I have grown to LOVE it, and this video has added to my love for it, truly an amazing interpretation of the source material, great video man you got a sub from me!!!!...
I've been reading DC for over 20 years and I can tell you now that Batman does NOT respect Constantine and openly states he dislikes him, many characters do. Keanu Reeve's Constantine is a lot more likable.
Love love love this movie. Peters Lucifer is one of if not my favorite devil portrayals of all time hes so perfectly sleazy and just what I feel the devil would feel
Where exactly do half-breeds come from, if they're not from possessions? They just will themselves onto our plane? And why would possession be neccessary then if Demons can just escape hell at any point and materialize as a half-breed? Also, Constantine indicated that demon that was made out of bugs was totally different from possessions/half-breeds. They were a full fledged Demon appearing w/o any constraints indicating something was amiss/breaking the rules (Mammon or Gabriel?). So once again, if half-breeds don't arise from possession, and they're not full demon like bug-boy, wtf are they and how do they just show up? I also wish there was a reason given why the "soldier" demons had no eyes/brain (missing half their head). I assumed at the time it was due to them having no souls, but half-breeds don't appear to suffer this, so the distinguishing characteristics is odd given there's no explanation for it.
Genesis Chapter 6 and The Book of Enoch Chapter 6 tell you how the “half breeds” came about. The Sons of God found the daughters of men beautiful, took them for wives, and the women bore giants, the Nephilim, which had demonic souls. They ate humans out of house and home, then they started eating humans themselves. The Fallen Ones showed man astrology, mathematics, using makeup, how to make weapons, how to wage war, etc., and for their sins, their leaders were cast into the abyss.
@toscadonna Yeeeeah, using the Bibles references to Nephilim Giants doesn't really work here. For one, Half Breeds in the Bible are Demons themselves once they died. Every other supernatural being would be an Angel or Fallen Angel (Archons/Watchers). The Half breeds in Constantine can be Angels or Demons. In the bible, No Nephilim were Angels, only their Fathers were. Nephilim also certainly don't have divine protection from God. The Half Breed Angels in Constantine do, because they're seemingly working for Heavens interests (by consorting with Demons in a bar for some reason). Also, a Half breed Demon implies a full fledged Demon in the movie, to which we see (as the Bug Demon). The Demons in the bible aren't "half breed". They are Demons through and through, though they would be considered half breed of Angel/Man. But there's no half demon/humans. Demons in the Bible are the disembodied spirits of the Nephilim (which WERE half breed Angel/Humans, as Giants) destroyed by God doomed to walk the Earth until the final judgement/imprisonment.

Okay..that's nifty. There's a horror comedy somewhere in that fact. Lol.
Man I love this movie so much, I watched it as a kid and it was so awesome, Tida as Gabriel is amazing I couldn't imagine anyone else doing it.
A part two that was based on the comics would be cool but also one that matched the new version of him they made as a movie would be awesome
Yes, please! As a non Hellblazer reader it would be very informative to whether or not it was a good transition from the comics or it was bad as many "fans" say.
@@digi_edits not very close to the comic but still manages to get the themes right in such a strange way. Like it's really not like the comic lol. One of the only comic to movies, that's so different , but so similar. Do yourself a favor and check out Hellblazer. I bet you'll get what I mean.
@Michael Bonés hey im sorry I didn't see this message before and make a reply, but request from me are not free but I only charge 10$ but a non paid request can still be made at a unknown time because I already have a list to make and have new ideas that come to me to make so its to hard to take away my personal life and time for other people unless you can pay for my time.
@Michael Bonés it dose sound cool to make yes, I can make you become just like John Constantine I have a awesome template and it would be more powerful version of him with more power's and abilitys to have.
Movie is so underrated and more people need to watch and appreciate it
i saw this in the theater. great soundtrack and awesome lore.
That would have been awesome
One of my favorite scenes, in a movie full of favorite scenes, is when Gavin Rossdale/Balthazar meets Constantine at Midnight's club and takes a jab at Constantine as if he wanted to bite him. Reeve's reaction is either incredibly well acted or he didn't expect Rossdale to do this and the reaction was genuine. Anyway, one of the best movies in my collection. The awesome props, the acting, the story, it's a masterpiece. I can even endure Shia LaBeouf in it.
So glad someone finally explored this area. Constantine deserves far more attention than it gets.
The casting was perfect all around
I saw it in the cinema when it came out, did not realize that it was a DC movie. Enjoyed the heck out of it.
Fun fact: Peter Stormare also VA’d as Godbrand in the Castlevania animated series. His performance in this movie really caught my family’s attention, we all loved this movie.
Love this movie. I know many that don't care for it, but it tries to do so much. Too bad a DC universe just can't get started. I thought you only did vampires. I love it either way. Keep it up man.
Yea it’s usually vampires but I just couldn’t resist this one haha
@@coganLollins sweet. Please keep things going. Love your work.
@@coganLollins I'm so happy to see this video.
Can't get started according to whom? I will say your not entirely wrong but considering what there able to accomplish even though there still figuring out plans says alot and they win awards and Oscars so there doing something right.
One of my favorite movies and the concept is badass asf. A human battling demons with holy weaponry and holy artifacts, I wish they made another
Constantine was always a favorite of mine! A hidden gem I recently showed friends of mine (who are very critically of movies and have a really good taste in my opinion) - they were shocked that they never heard about that movie and really enjoyed it
Underratard, re-watchable, great story, awesome actors and special effects. 5/5
@@PartStupid counter theory. its the unholiest of unholiest relics as it was used to kill jesus, thats why its like a giant neon lit freeway for possession for mammon
@@PartStupid you lost bruh. Now your just making shit up out of desperation.
Move on
@@PartStupidthe fuck would they be trying so hard to get Angela if he could just possess any old person.
Tilda Swinton was perfect for this part - she looks EXACTLY like a Bernini angel - especially at the end when she's frozen in place. Her pose reminds me of the angel in The Ecstasy of St. Teresa by Bernini.
One of my favourite movies 🙌 I learned so much in this video even though I’ve seen it a thousand times 😅
This has to be one of my favorite movies of all time. I remember buying it a few months after it came out on dvd. And I don't even know how many times I've watched it. Now I want to watch it again 🤣
No one asked....... NO ONE ASKED!!!!
Love this video excellent work.
I love how Papa Midnight is like The Bar Owner from Byonetta and i think maybe the reason Lucifer dose not show his wings is because he has to many to show and can you imagine what Lucifer's true Form looks like i wonder if its similar to The End of Days Lucifer.
Respect dude and keep up the epic work :)
Yessss!! This movie is in my top 5 fav movies. I watch it at least twice a year. You did such a good job. Theres stuff you mentioned I never thought about or payed attention to.
How about vampires from dusk til dawn? The series has lots of lore.
I swear he did it before?

I think it's an under rated movie for sure. Great cast. Would love to see more...sequel, prequel, remake

and CONSTANTINE with Keanu Reeves is MASTERPIECE
Thanks lol 🙏 glad you enjoyed
Yes! Constantine is a masterpiece! My husband and I are so waiting for news about the next Constantine movie! It's been years and we watched a video where Keanu and Constantine director and producer talk about making the next one! We got so excited!
This is one of my all time fav movies along with Van Hel sing ♥
This was my favorite movie as a kid and word on the street is Keanu suiting up for a second go!!
I thought it was because Constantine threw his soul into hell with the ritual, and Angela just went there naturally by technically committing suicide, so for her to come back Constantine just had to revive her, but for him to come back he needed some sort of wakeup call.
Thanks!
This movie is criminally underrated
Actually, Gabriel lost his protection when he declared he would smite Lucifer in Mamon's honor, effectively putting Mamon before God.
This movie is so awesome! One of my favorite Keanu Reeves films!
The whole cast was amazing. I can't wait for Constantine 2.
Now we know why Keanu Reeves told the people that made John Wick when they make the hotel that none of the assassins could harm each other as a rule😂
I don't remember what year I first saw the movie, Constantine. I liked it so much that I have the DVD in my small collection of movies. I can't wait to be able to see the second one. I'm hoping they are able to do it justice. Thank you for explaining things about the movie. Great job.
Francis Laurence he needs to revisit this film,we are long overdue a second and third films
I thought this movie was Reeves best work so far.
There is a sequel happing with Keanu in it
@@theelusivememe1772 I know I've heard, but most sequels fail to live up to expectations so I'm trying not to get my hopes up
its not even close to one of a kind, there are several movies just like it.
@@GHMYahooka I disagree. Several movies about religion similar to Constantine are either comical, boring or a little too religious.
Killer movie!!! Nice review. Keanu did the role supreme justice.
I always loved this movie, you could have a look at teen wolf which is a series with a whole lot of creatures and lore. Slow to start with but gets more expanded a few seasons in
Agreed slow start first season is a swamp to get through but get really good peaking in season 4 and 5 for me after that went kinda down hill.
You are correct...this movie is an absolute masterpiece. It is one of my most favorite movies.... that and Johnny Mnemonic. Thank you for covering it.
So biblically accurate John Wick?
Nah more like john wick is just agnostic Constantine
Constantine is one of my all-time favorite movies and I think part of that reason is because Keanu Reeves is perfect for this particular casting. I have watched the animated movies, and also the tv series and they all have something to recommend them, but I believe that this movie is the best of the bunch. Thank you for your review.
The shows great too, different but really good 👍
This is always been one of my top five favorite movies and I've seen it so many times.
Pacino was the best for sure.
Yeah, one of Keanu’s best roles. Highly under rated film that was flawed but was a good representation of the comic book character.

Do you own a cat? They are basically demons….lol
I loved this film, and when Keanu said in an interview that he would love to be John Constantine again I nearly shot my bolt! I loved the Hellblazer comics and Keanu's version blew me away! Loved it, still do and it would be fantastic to see him reprise his role as John Constantine

Do the vampires from salem lot and american horror story hotel
That film is awesome. Never been into HellBlazer but this film catches my attention still.
I agree with you, Constantine was a great movie. And thank you for this video, it explains a lot.
But you are right he was probably sent back to hell not really destroyed for good 👍
@@coganLollins - Ah really? That seems so odd but if they confirmed it then I guess that is that. Do you have a link to that interview by chance?

An underrated gem for sure. I'm glad it's not forgotten
this was one of the best movies ever...keanu played the role perfectly.
100%. Constantine was amazing. I watched it when I was 20. Completely didn't get the respect it deserved.
Will watch again. Great breakdown.
