Saisinksonite He did give a 10/10 and game of the year to Witcher 3 after the devs treated him on a trip. Of course he was going to score it high, he basically worked with them, so despite the problems of the game he's not going to bite the hand that feeds. But Witcher isn't a good example because nearly everyone gave praise to it. It's an extremely overrated game but besides all of this Joe isn't a great reviewer simply because he tacks a score onto everything. Just look at his shitty movie reviews, he's clearly hardly knowledgeable about quality filmmaking and yet just continues blabbering on and on and at the end puts a number on it. It's beyond stupid.
Art-Official's Angry Joe roasts are hilarious. AJ does make himself an easy target. He's just a nerd. Being a nerd doesn't make you a hardcore gamer or cinema enthusiast.

When I was in the army, we underwent specialist training where we learned to remove our soul from our bodies so that we could see and control our bodies in the tactical third person view. We were trained to hone into the force so that we could detect the exact location of the enemy, regardless of whether there were any tedious walls in the way.
Of course, the enemy were trained in telepathy as well... but their training was so vigorous and coarse that it fried their brains leaving them stupid, and almost blind.

Instead of looking at this and thinking aw it can still be fun, how about saying NO! Just for a fucking change, how about we as gamers demand MORE! How about we have NO wall hacks? Think about it, we only see what we can see, no tagging at all. Have an option that when you scope in on an enemy you can choose to have range on or off to calculate bullet drop. How about the Ai have different personalities, some are cautious, some wreckless, some flank but they all work together. (Half life2) How about when you jump in a bush if any bit of you is visible the Ai can also see it (Operation flashpoint) How about the enemy can see you if you can see them (Half life) How about you have to find their snipers with sound (Hidden and dangerous) How about you have to be quiet and move through the map slowly looking for traps and enemy soldiers (Hidden and dangerous, BF Vietman). How about your health does not regenerate and ever enemy that you search does not have a supply of ammo, mines, first aid etc How about we don't have rubber bloody grenades :)
Guys we need to stop accepting this kind of tripe as acceptable for a £40 we really do and shame on any reviewer that did not rip this garbage apart, you are a disgrace to gaming!

Games started to lose their attraction for me a few years back and at first I just thought it was me pushing fifty. But I realised eventually that it was the eternal dumbing down and lack of new ideas. It's become a rarity now to buy a AAA title at full price especially because we get shafted in Australia on price. My wife no longer cringes when I tell her I bought a game as its usually only a 10 buck steam special. #no full price games

Not so good when he's not even able to set the difficulty to max and keep ranting. It is not a high budget game and it's a said casual sniper game. If you play it like Rambo and complain about it, maybe you didn't understand where the fun is.

I'm gonna say it: the game industry became much bigger than "good old times", which means you can find a game for whatever taste you have. But ofc gaming was so much better without steam, with 56k modems, and pixels in place of characters.

Yeah cos obviously if you want a tactical sniper game, you'd go for one where you can use a really noisy drone to see everyone before you break cover, taking out pretty much all danger from the game. Let's just face it, there are problems with every game and the likelihood that a perfect game will come out is infinitesimally small.

You do realize Authentic & Authentic plus modes exist and remove all hud & xray vision.. granted it also removes objective markers which is overkill IMO. but still almost all of your complaints are gone if you just challenge yourself more & play on that mode

That's ASININE. The NORMAL difficulty should represent the game the way it is supposed to be. Any other difficulty is an extra. We're now at the point where NORMAL is even easier than what EASY was years ago. Now you must choose some higher difficulty that nobody will ever play just to get a half way decent game. It's stupid, and you lazy kids are ok with it.

Play it however the fuck you want that's the beauty of a good sandbox stealth game. Confutionist i remember wanting to play the game on hard after i finished it on normal. nowadays i dont even finish most of the games. the last game i finished was witcher 3 and i forced myself to finish it.
Tell this to the guy currently playing The Banner Saga on normal and getting his ass handed to him against the boss.......and after every reload (4 times now), looking at the options menu and contemplating changing it to easy.....

I guess Mack just does not 'get' sniper and stealth games, he expects everything to be a run and gun shooter like Half-Life. I have played most of the sniper/stealth games out there and this is one of the best. I have put over 700 hours into each of the SE titles.

Billy Harradine Older gaming companies didn't make near as much as they do now. They used to love making games that people would enjoy playing, where the player could have amazing moments that they would never forget. Where the player was actually challenged and didn't have his or her hand held the entire way. There was so much love back then. Now days they hold your hand the whole time and they make everything easy for you. They make half ass games now that really don't even try to be good.

Look at GTA V or Witcher 3, thanks to how big the industry is now, we have games like that. It's a double edged sword, you can't just say that all games suck, that's just incorrect. I don't understand how anyone could call this type of gameplay immersive. Its not.
Gaming is so close to being dead now.. no innovation, no creativity anymore, no attempt at immersion. Just make it easy so everyone can win and appeal to the widest audience possible. Everything as casual as can be. Also just put the minimum amount of content in so its just passable so it can get up for sale as quickly and cheaply as possible. Always maximize any potential profits. Don't innovate. Simplify everything. Rush it out.

Bobby White VR is making leaps and bounds these days and after finally being able to try it, vr is the future of gaming
VR is a fad just like it was back in the 80's and 90's.
VR is fine, but it needs to remain separate from the more traditional controller scheme in games. I'm defintely for innovation, but VR should not become the standard, especially when not everyone can physically handle gaming on a VR system.

Hidden and Dangerous 1 was so hardcore, as a kid i didnt even finish the first mission where you have to advance across the foggy bridge to the warehouses. I loved the fact even as a kid it was hard.
You know when I was a little kid 15-20 years ago I always thought how amazing games in the future where going to be. Not just graphics but I always wondered about the amazing mechanics games would incorporate into their games. Taking advantage of the technology to let you control even the most minute of things.
What have I seen since then? Leaning all but gone in shooters. Xray vision instead of advanced audio cues. Auto reloading. Aim assist. Jesus radar. Stand and shoot till killed AI. Regenerating health. All the cool, complex, and interesting mechanics from my childish daydreams turned out, disappointingly, to be just that. Daydreams from a child.
Out of all the games that I have played. The only game that ever came close to my dumb hopes (for shooters) is Arma 3. So kuddos to that dev team.
That is realy sad. And true.
It really does say a lot when Doom from 1993 is infinitely more interesting, diverse and tightly designed and lovingly crafted compared to modern games. All you really need is an excellent formula and expand upon it, that's what makes Doom and Doom 2 such timeless masterpieces. It's an example for FPS but it's amazing how we've been going backwards over the past 10 or so years.

I for once, don't have problem with the existence of X-ray vision. Let them put it it the game, when it pleases them. As long as it is a single player game and you have the option to turn it off/not use it.
I recently played the demo for Watch Dogs 2. And I liked how you can hack the cameras and see the enemies. I thought: "Wow this could make for a really fun stealth game, I can observe the enemies through cameras, which will give me an idea of their position and how they move. But there is still element of surprise involved. Well of course now I can just see them through walls so this feature is useless, but since the devs bothered to put it in, surely there is a way to turn the X-ray vision off. Long story short, there wasn't, so Ubisoft is 40$ shorter.
You can turn off wall hacks. Playing it on the 4th difficulty takes away all the hand holding wall hacks and tagging. AI still shite tho.

Authentic settting is insane
I played on authentic where it doesn't let you use the tagging feature, no magical red marker telling you where your bullet will land and whatnot, you said it yourself Mac, the difficulty settings are customisable.
I can only assume the authentic plus difficulty didnt exist when he released this review, it literally removed/improved drastically all the things he bitched about.

Love your content Mac but if you continue to play the games in noob mode your gonna be disappointed, play this on the hardest difficulty and its a phenomenal experience and a totally different game.
Im a realism nerd in everything from shooters to racing sims and everything in between, i eventually got round to playing this and its excellent in the hardest mode. Its a like a new game.

I like your reviews, don't get me wrong, but sometimes it feels like you aren't trying. I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I only got the game on sale recently.
I agree with you. The AI is pretty fucking bad, the mini-map doesn't really make the gameplay any harder and the x-ray vision also limits the difficulty of the game. I noticed how tremendously easy it was in the first mission already, so I went into the menu and changed a couple of things.
I turned off the mini-map, stopped tagging, got rid of the sniping dot etcetera etcetera and thus creating a way more difficult experience for myself. It's reasonable to complain about x-ray vision, but then don't use it! Dislike the mini-map? Don't use it. I understand that you want challenge and it's perfectly reasonable to want it, because so do I. But it feels like you're so caught up in this mindset of games are becoming easy that it feels like you're not even trying to make them harder for yourself.
Just got it on gamepass for free. Perhaps on launch you couldn't disable the Minimap?
Also yeah I agree somewhat I mean, hard is only the middle difficulty, if he wanted a challenge he couldve at least tried the actual hardest ones.

TheUnbeholden 6 maps, 12 missions, 400 hours clocked on Steam, I'd say it's a full game.
If it takes you more than a 1-1.5 hours for one mission then you've got way more patience then the average guy has for getting the value out of a game. Also the other half of the 12 missions are copy and paste. Not counting prologue.
TheUnbeholden everyone I know who plays it clocks minimum 30 hours, but I guess we have different sample data.
Also the other missions aren't copy paste.
1st person sniping/parkour game set in the jungles of Columbia, with a storyline based around eliminating Pablo escobar and his merry little men. Now that's innovative.
You could play it on Authentic or Authentic plus (i.e. the difficulty level above hard) so as to have alot less to complain about.

Plays game called sniper elite, barely snipes which is the best part of this game. This game also has a difficulty that turns off all the see through walls and hud and makes this game fun and challenging.
I'm 36 years old been around since damn near the beginning. I have probably bought 6 or 7 games in the past year out of all the crap. I totally agree games have gone to shit . I understand developer's take a financial risk when making a game but playing it safe and trying to please everyone only works for so long. keep it up mack

Not in my play through so stop lying, I have hours of video proof this is not eh case at all. Am actually making a video this month with tons of Half life Ai at work and when you see it you will be shocked at how good it is compared to modern games.

Comparing any random game made today to Half Life is like comparing a McLaren F1 to a Toyota Camry. You can't compare one of the greatest supercars of all time to just any modern car. You have to compare it to the one of the best modern cars, like comparing the F1 to a Porsche 918.
I'm not saying that the AI in Half Life is bad or even that it isn't better than the best modern equivalent, but saying it's better than most modern games is a bit obvious considering most games of any time period aren't that good. Some are bad, many are ok, and a few are great. That was true when Half Life came out and it's true now.
EDIT: Also lying implies an intentional misrepresentation of fact, not just speaking a falsehood. So maybe don't accuse someone of lying right out of the gate without evidence they knew the truth and decided to say otherwise.

I don't think the xray vision is there on "authentic" mode. All of the other HUD features are gone. It's pretty challenging on Authentic. Idk if you tried Authentic but it's much different.

It's definitely not on Authentic I was just playing it. AI is just as dumb but it seems like they can see you much easier on Authentic and they seem to search for you longer. There's 4 difficulties unless UK got a different version. For sure there's no X-Ray vision on Authentic difficulty. And since it adds wind, distance, and takes away the stupid red square in your scope for the guaranteed hit it's actually quite challenging to hit your target with the sniper rifle. Just replayed the first mission on Authentic and it took me about 2 hours to complete being sneaky and trying to get the tripwire officer kills.
You do realize there is hardcore too right? It fixes most of the problems you have with the game but you didn't mention it.

The fact that you consider them problems is an opinion. Just like Mack's review. Is it an opinion that most of us share? Probably. I don't want X-Ray vision in my games either. It's a difficulty setting though not a problem. The devs get that not everyone wants a really tough challenge and they just wanna sit on their couch and play something. Remember it's a business, they wanna make money and that usually means catering to the lowest common denominator. It's not a problem, the problem is that in the review he states that he's on the hardest difficulty and these features are still there... which isn't true. In fact you can even say that there are 5 difficulties because you have a custom one, which he did bring up.
Mack remember how you in Half Life 2 drove a Buggy down the coastroad? And then you were on some hill with a crossbow? And to time your aim and accuracy to shoot the Combine?
Remember how they all went inside the house and never came out until you were right infront of the house and they all jumped out? Good times.

Firstly this is not a AAA game, it’s a AA game. I love Macks reviews, but on this one I have to disagree. I think this is a great little game. There’s a real variety of options in this game, stealth, sniping, shooting, traps etc, which can be combined to excellent effect, it also has some fantastic large open sandbox levels.
Also I have to say a word on the AI. I’ve played a lot of games, especially stealth games over the years, and I have to say the AI is impressive in this game. The AI has a real variety of behaviours, the AI actually work together, they flank you, suppress you whilst others move forward. They can actually see quite far, but yes their cone of vision is slightly narrow. They notice dead bodies, they call for help, they notice when one of their comrades is missing, and will search for them, sometimes even alerting others. The dead bodies also stay, and don’t disappear like most games!
Yes there are like every game ‘rules’ to the stealth, and the AI works within those parameters. The players visibility decreases when in dark areas, and such. Yes the enemy zero in on you last known position.
When in bushes, if you remain still the AI can’t see you. That’s a rule the devs went with. Granted I don’t think this is visually communicated very well to the players, like Mack showed in his video and AI walked past him when his head was sticking out of a bush. But a lot of games have these kinds of visual inconsistencies.
The AI compared with a lot of stealth games I think is very good. It’s more dynamic than a lot of games - Assassins Creed, Hitman, Splinter Cell. Etc. Granted yeah not as good as Half Life 2.
Also another thing that is great in this game, especially for a game on consoles is it has loads of OPTIONS to tailor the game to how you like it. A lot of the options can simply be turned off, turning off a lot of the HUD aids that the game provides such as x-ray vision Mac mentioned. All of that can be turned off. In fact pretty much everything in the game can be turned off if you don’t want it.
I do agree with Mac, in some sense that third person games are never going to be ultimately incredibly realistic when compared with first person games. However this game in no way is a travesty, Neither can it be heralded as the poster boy of bad games of this generation. That’s way to harsh. This ain’t COD or another soulless generic pile of gaming poo.
A travesty of a game is surely the new Tomb Raider games, no crouch button, linear, scripted bollocks, now that’s a blight on the gaming industry. But this is a good little game folks.

I played H&D 1 and 2..... Loved those games, but what the hell is Mack talking about, the AI was shit! The main difference is that they practically had terminator vision and could see you miles away, and they could kill you in a couple of hits. It was far more deadly. But I’d hardly call that intelligent?

Most of your complaints are against features which can be disabled with custom difficulty... Try playing in Authentic mode if you don't like all the easy features.. If that's not a challenge then stop whinging and go play something else.
In authentic mode you have to take wind speed, distance as well as environmental conditions into account.. you can't see where the enemies are as there's no mini map, the AI's foibles aren't as apparant when you can't see them through the wall, even with silencers or the Carbine the enemy will still see you if you are visible and they find a body and see which way they are lying.
So yeah if you're complaining about easy mode then DON'T PLAY IN EASY MODE, which all of the difficulty settings other than Custom and Authentic are.
Let's see how you NEVER DIE when you don't have a health bar, this review is bad because the reviewer didn't actually play the challenging Authentic mode (which the EASY, MEDIUM and HARD settings are essentially training for!) what an utter berk.
Did u even watch the whole video? He set it to hard in custom mode. Ok it it was bugged but his point still stands. Its just dumbed down nonsense.
You know after hearing "the most advanced WW2 shooter ever built" then a guy getting a testicle shot, that this is going to be an amazing WAB.

He just complains about how easy it is, but he didn't turn up the difficulty. Almost everything he's complaining about gets fixed, the training wheels get taken off. He's upset that it's called Hard, but it's really the second of the four difficulties, all of which are easily seen when choosing. It's like being mad that Starbucks calls its smallest size Grande.
I just don't know how you get off calling something too easy without turning up the difficulty. Look up Authentic and Authentic Plus gameplay if you watch this and are on the fence because Mac can't figure out the Options menu

X-ray vision can work. The original Red Faction had destructible walls and a rocket launcher with a display on it that could see through walls for a limited distance. So you could detect if someone was standing on the other side of a wall and blow it up. The most powerful weapon the railgun could also shoot through walls and had a longer range on its xray scope. It was fun because it worked with the destructible walls, and was only on two guns, one of which was a power weapon and the other which had a limited range.

AAA games have gone forwards in many ways. Progressively better graphics, better sound mixing, better world-building. In terms of production value, games nowadays are better than ever. However, that also goes for budgets. With development costs regularly going into the tens of millions of dollars, companies can't afford to shut out players because they are less skillful and frust-resistant or they can't use mouse+keyboard on their couch - hence all the aimbots, x-ray vision etc. Applied to FPS games, you can't really develop a tactical shooter that doesn't have features for casual players AND expect it to sell well. So of course, compared to a time when video games weren't a widespread hobby across almost all age groups yet, games are now more inclusive and thus easier on average. It just sells better.
That said, if SE4 has an "Authentic" difficulty mode and it does what people here claim it does, its major fault is misbalanced difficulty modes with a gap where the sweet spot should be. It doesn't have a "normal" difficulty that's challenging while not being too frustratingly anal. It has Super Easy Mode, Easy Mode, Fairly Easy Mode and Hard.
Thomas Weiler KC:D was a more realistic RPG game, that's received bad scores for this. However, it's sold over a million copies, and has the highest "playing at once" number on steam to date.
the only game I have hope for this year is Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord. If this game fuck it up, i'm gonna be seriously depressed. I dont think they gonna fk it up though. Btw Cant believe cheating is a part of the "gaming mechanic" nowadays.
