Big Gears fan here I admit the story mode is always on rails, I play it with my bro split screening it up on console. I buy it 90% for multiplayer though. Nice thing about multiplayer is people who stay behind cover get destroyed. Story mode has been a bit frustrating, gow1 2 and 3 had a much better story for sure. This game should really only be a console game though. Not sure why Microsoft is doing this pc/xbox share same game thing. (Money) Anyways good review Mack.

They decided to do the PC/Xbox crossplay thing because, according to them, both platforms are totally equal and everyone has an even chance to win. Obviously this is not the case, but whatevs, I guess? ;p

I suspect this game's popularity is purely the result of marketing. If you were to sell dried shit as the world's leading energy bar and pay all the rating agencies to give it top marks, the people with extra money and no taste (mostly gamers) would buy it on that basis alone.
been playing it and I must say i can't believe how this game has not changed at all, not one fucking bit, since the original back in 2005 or whenever. 10 years and 4 games later you're still just moving from one spot to another shooting like a common on-rail arcade coin-op. pretty sad.

I knew I would get hate for this but am not going to sit here and tell people that pressing a button that automatically runs me to a barricade, then press another button to aim over the barricade is fun. This is all you actually do in this game, run from cover to cover, either shoot the enemy or pull them over the barricade and execute them. Multiplayer revolves around rolling from cover to cover doing exactly the same. Horde mode is setting up barricades then running from cover to cover shooting waves of enemies. Thats it, GOW4 $60 and thats all you do, nothing more, oh wait, you can saw people in half with your weapon too.
It's shallow, boring rinse and repeat, predictable campaign, dreadful stereotypical characters, horrible script, really shit villain, moronic gameplay that literally a 5 yr old could handle, multiplayer is so boring, roll around the floor between barricades shooting. It's honestly a complete joke of a game, compare this to any competitive shooter and it seems like it was made for 6yr olds. It literally has nothing good going for it at all, maybe the graphics but thats about it, worst AAA game of the year so far, easily.

Worth A Buy your dead wrong its not about running from cover to cover its a lot more complicated.. go play a game of execution and escalation and you'll see what i mean. or search the casual playlist for that matter. its a lot deeper than running from cover to cover but you can say whatever makes you feel better and live in a world where the only games that take skill are made for the pc. i thought if i gave you my side of the argument you'd be a little open minded to the idea that this game takes skill. but i can see that even great reviewers like you sometimes wont understand.

If you're referring to Batman Arkham Knight and how Mack described the combat that's bullshit. I played through the game almost 3 times and you can't beat it by just tapping one button, that's just totally incorrect.

I remember a game from years ago, Killswitch, I think it was called. Back on PS2, maybe on other formats too, it was a cover based shooter that did it right. The AI was pretty smart (most of the time), it was pretty hard, even on easier difficulties, and you couldn't get away with not using cover because you'd get slaughtered. Also, this was before "cover shooter" became a gimmick; Killswitch most likely was the pioneer that made cover mechanics a thing (for better and worse)
Late reply but whatever... Aye, it's Killswitch. Cracking game. Gears of War is heavily inspired by it, even though many still believe that it was Gears that revolutionized cover shooters. Gears' AI is pretty damn clever too, similar to Killswitch, where you do need to use cover, or you'll easily get killed. Need to use higher difficulties though, because the easier difficulties make the game are not worth playing it's stupidly easy.
The fun part in GOW is actually the violence and the gore of the game. Is It me or with all these robots, there is not a single blood drop ?

I understand the point of this WAB series, and sometimes Mack gives very valid criticism, especially in times when a lot of other reviewers won't. But there's a huge difference between being able to discuss the flaws in these games, and just being an old and jaded guy blinded by nostalgia. Sure, there's a lot wrong with some games nowadays. But damn, Mack. Sometimes it just seems like if it's a popular title, then you've already decided you're not going to like it before you even touch it.

Doom(2016) is a linear game. Mack loved Doom(2016). Back in the 90s all games were basically linear but they were designed brilliantly that challenged the user not the same rinse and repeat level after level like you get with today's games.

Most people here, like myself, watch/found your videos because of your attitude towards gaming! LOL -- I check a few sources when I'm going to buy a game and you are one of them. mack the meat off the game is the multiplayer and always has been since the first game it might be a cover shooter and i generally hate them but there is alot of things you can do to get ppl out of cover and most ppl rush you with shotguns and try to actively flank you at all times meaning sitting behind cover without moving gets you killed very easily also snipers can hit your neck from behind cover resulting in instant headshots meaning you gotta move around also you can mantle kick ppl over cover stunning them for an easy kill or grabbing them from cover also various grenades will make it so ppl cant use the cover cause they get stunned or damaged also the story felt more like a fanservice as they talked about passed events brought old char back and have easter eggs that are throwbacks to memorable moments in previous gears games ps i love your reviews and respect your oppinions i just felt like giving my arguments

i looked for it in youtube and got nausea after 10 seconds. it may be different when doing this yourself but i get a seizure from this sort of gameplay. so if this is how you are supposed to play the game "competitively" then you (not you personally, you as in "in general") need to lack at least half a brain because no healthy person could find this 'fun'.

Understand what you're trying to say, Mack. The last part was especially relevant and a good criticism of the series. However, the Gears series has always been about the cover system. I'm not defending the system but I'm saying that's it's established and has become synonymous with the series. To expect anything more is...well...setting your standards too high.
I never really played Gears for the gameplay. It was always for the story and the experience of imagining myself in the fight. That was when I was a bit younger though, so it may be nostalgia speaking. Or perhaps the first few games were fresher.
the problem is its a shit system and people are putting it on a pedestal and worshiping it, which sets the precedent for all other games. Thats why shooters are such trash now, peoples standards are so low. So now when someone speaks the truth about how shitty it is you get all this "how dare you" backlash, im glad mack isnt a blind lemming and is willing to rip into it and expose it.
DobbinsVault Mack's standards are higher and for good reason. He's seen the pinnacle games of the industry and knows the standard of good games. Can't blame him for holding those standards but I just feel he expected too much from the Gears series.

Did you get all the other games with the pc version like the console players did? Before I joined the pc master race i had an xbox and it was a fun game with a great story and had was very challenging game mode once you unlocked insane.
So I believe it would attract those who like the story and those, like myself, who switched to pc gaming.

Gameplay is shit. But it's the most well optimized and best looking PC game this year, other than Battlefield1. "Unreal 4 Engine Masterpiece". That's worth a mention atleast and something that should be encouraged.

Good man! Your reviews are spot on. It's great that computer games are relatively cheap and youtube free to publish on so we get honest reviews not influenced by publishers.
I grew up playing games - I started on an Amiga - and played everything of significance since with on PC and also console (my personal highlights include Rollercoaster Tycoon, Half-life (version 1, Team fortress classic, counterstrike, Day Of Defeat, and a load of creative community produced buggy but fun often hilarious mods) Quake 3, Tony Hawk 1 + 2 ONLY! on PS and the Forza games on Xbox and Zelda on N64.
My father had a newsagent shop so I got to read all the magazines ever published since day one. I am also a petrol head so read every car magazine too. Reviews of stuff in magazines seems to be based mostly on how much the publisher spends on advertising as magazines/websites existence and survival depends on this. I remember seeing the latest E63 beat the new M5 in a roadtest in Autocar a few years back which was a first for any M5 not to win a comparison - then I checked the back cover, inside cover, etc. No BMW ads - the London Olympics was on and BMWs uk ads budget must have been all spent on that.
Gears of War is like any other of the big budget games with multiple sequels - I can't believe people I know look forward to and play this shit (I played 1 + 2) and felt cheated as I thought I was missing something - how is this fun I thought - what have I missed?
Anyway, I just wanted to say that although I don't really play games any more I watch and enjoy your reviews. You are a star!
Weirdly, I stopped gaming almost entirely when my son was old enough to play with me. I blame Minecraft for this. I found Minecraft so enjoyable, so creative, so funny, so open that every other game feels scripted and boring. I feel like in other games I can see that shoddy programming coming to life before my eyes in a series of IF THEN DO X ELSE DO Y commands! I have heard 'hardcore gamers' reject the notion of Minecraft as they are not will to play something with such 'shitty blocky graphics'. Tossers.
Whether you like Minecraft or not I think it stands as a beacon in modern gaming as to the power of independant gaming. Platforms like Xbox Arcade, Steam and sites like gamejolt.com etc. are giving me a reason not to abandon gaming entirely.
My 8 year old spends as much time on basic game development tools like Scratch as playing. He does like Skylanders though but he is only 8 and has never played Mario 64, Zelda or Mario Kart to see where the game design came from or how well it can actually be done! The cutscenes and characters/models are world class but gameplay is derivative pants.
Anyway, thanks again for the shit-eating grin I had with my morning coffee while watching this!

It's not all sad though, Mack. Independant development is as strong (or stronger) than ever. For example, the mobile platform has demonstrated you can be a bedroom coder with a fresh ideas and be a success without the need for 100 staff for motion capture, sound design, art, level design, etc. I was hooked on Candy Crush for a while - just genius, timeless, addictive game design. No reason that could not have existed on Amiga/Atari ST.
PS I have just watched your Battlefield 1 review and I too have a hard-on for everything WW1 (and WW2) - give me a M1 Grand over a Scar-L/M4-Carbine any day of the week (Day of Defeat taught me this - remember the Push maps with choke points that felt like real war). I also loved Bad Company 2 so maybe I'll ask santa.

You dont like the story? Fair enouf. But ffs play it on insane mode for some sort of challange. This is a lay back and chill game. You talk like thus game is easy but you havent even reviewed the multiplayer. It is very competitive and yes you do need some stradegy. all and all i think you went in this game with the wrong point of view. weak review mack

When you play Gears at a high level it is the best shooter on console, when you play it at a low level it's godamn near the worst. People who are bad at Gears don't like Gears because they don't make use of the finer mechanics and tactics (up As, wall cancel, back A, wall bounce, weapon sliding). The Gnasher takes skill to use because to become good with it you must also master the movement mechanics - but a person who has never devoted a significant amount of time learning the game wouldn't know that. Criticizing the multiplayer of this game like you did would be like complaining about CSGO because you can't sprint and your bullets never hit while you are moving, of course both of these are intentionally in the game and are made to foster competition not cater to noobs like you say things in Gears are.

Loved jumping from cover to cover in previous GOW games. Not sure if I would now! But I did back then.

Big fan mack. But this is an incredibly lazy Worth a Buy. You were literally taking cover from behind cover and shooting across the map with a lancer. There's a huge variety of weapons each with their unique executions when enemies are downed. When I and everyone else I've seen played, we were actively moving from cover to cover, yanking opponents over and executing them, using melee, chainsawing them in half. You didn't mention how great the cinematic and story is. Or the stellar voice acting and sound affects in the game. Or the physics during the big storms in the game. And on top of that the amazing multiplayer. Horde is also incredibly fun especially with friends. The only negative in my book are the loot boxes and micro transactions although they're only for gun/character skins. I don't like that kind of stuff in games. But overall, it's a great first game for the new studio.

Pretty much this, it's 85% pressing a button to hide behind a wall then pick your weapon to shoot over the top of it. The fact you can drag enemies over the said wall and execute them is not a plus, it's a minus as it's all about bloody walls. Every map, every fight, it's walls, walls, walls. Am staggered so many people think this is fun, I was bored after 30mins.

it does get better later on in the game when you meet the swarm as they throw frags at you and actually rush you. they also have smaller creatures that will chase you. They are a lot harder to kill as well and the AI is more better especially on hardcore.

To an extent, I would agree about single player. But that definitely doesn't apply to multiplayer, or even horde mode, where you need to be on the move a lot more. It doesn't even apply to the latter part of the campaign as much. You'll get flanked by lots of enemies, and the likes of the Snatchers, will force you to move out more.

I remember playing the first on my mates brand new 360 10 years ago and it was fantastic. It was games with gold not long ago and it really hasn't aged well. I imagine 4 isn't any different.

THANK YOU. I have several friends who salivate over this franchise, and I just never ever understood it. I played the first 3 Gears games and barely remember anything about them, and have had no desire to ever play them again. Looks like the franchise is continuing to follow the same old path...

mack I'm a big fan of ur channel. I played Gears 1,2, and 3. And this game is all about multiplayer. the campaign is like the side quest, honestly.
please try multiplayer more.
My number one game is Gears of War multiplayer. Gears multiplayer is different to campaign. in the online battles there is more skill and strategy needed and it won't be all hide behind cover.
this game is worth a buy only for multiplayer. But for campaign I agree with u on everything.
I hear you, Mack, but is it a good linear, 3rd-person, cover, Operation Wolf (those plastic Uzis were so cool in the arcade...), Rambo game? When compared to other linear 3rd-person, cover, Operation Wolf, Rambo games...?
This is the franchise that pioneered that cover mechanic if I remember correctly.

When I heard Mack was getting a 1070 I knew this was coming. I recently bought a 1070 and just finished the GOW4 campaign with a mate. We just took it for what it was and had a blast. Can't be arsed with the online play though. Cover based shooters are feeling date now. Mack, we all know you don't like this genre, but at least try and get inside the head of gamers that do and maybe let them know it's a good addition to the genre, which it is...when it drops in price at least.
Back to Rocket League, GTA 5 and a quick tug before bedtime.

I'm a huge gears fan and I kinda see what you mean but my love for the games comes from the multiplayer which I didn't think you really covered properly I know it has been a bit buggy/dead on PC at the minute but please give it a shot and id like to see a video of what you think as it will be entertaining.
This is a great co-op game and that's where it's strength lies. Had lots of fun playing the GOW series over the years on xbox360 and now the 1 with friends and a few drinks. Yeah the gameplay is linear but playing through the campaign with a friend on insane difficulty requires a lot more strategy than just pew pew and cover.
How do you feel about RDR2 for consoles only, master race?
Am gutted as I have sompleted it twice on my sons Xbox 360, it's easy my favourite console game and just shows what devs can do when they try.
