Samsung S95C OLED TV Review - Worth The Upgrade?

  • The Samsung S95C OLED is a high-end 4k TV in Samsung's 2023 lineup, and it replaces the 2022 Samsung S95B OLED. There are a few design changes compared to the 2022 version, as the S95C uses Samsung's Slim One Connect external input box and has a sleeker, more uniform design. It's powered by Samsung's Neural Quantum Processor 4k, which was first introduced in 2022 and is designed to deliver better upscaling, optimized on a scene-by-scene basis. It's also a gaming powerhouse, with a fast 144Hz refresh rate for PC gaming and support for HDMI 2.1 bandwidth on all four ports. Like other Samsung TVs, it uses Samsung's proprietary Tizen OS smart interface, which offers a large selection of apps and games.

4:50 Great video! I just want to add a little note in that in games with a raised black point in HDR (such as Cyberpunk and Frontiers of Pandora), venetian drapes are definitely noticeable when you're in a dark area. 50% greys are amazing, but 5% grey (and especially a bit lower than 5%) still exhibits noticeable dirty screen effect. As far as I know, it's kind of the one OLED-specific issue that's still relevant in 2024. It's the only flaw I can complain about with the viewing experience of this TV (and the abysmal bt2020 accuracy, but thats fixed with custom CMS and saturation at 22). I feel a bit bad for game developers, since local dimming sometimes goes absolutely whack when you have true 0 nit blacks on non-OLEDs but OLEDs exhibit DSE when you raise the blackpoint.
Secondly, at 06:00 it would be good to update this with a comment now that you figured out the pixel refresh wasn't engaged properly with your burn-in methodology.
Lastly, it would also be nice if you'd mentioned that the HDMI bandwith is limited to 40 GB/s instead of 48GB/s, which means that 144Hz 10 bit 4K Dolby Atmos doesn't work. In addition, the S90C nowadays uses the same panel as the S95C, but is software limited to have a lower peak brightness despite having the same heatsink and slightly lower power usage because of the lack of a connect box. It makes sense that they wanted to rebrand their old 1st gen panels to a budget panel with better PQ EOTF tracking and now they sold the old generation panel stock, they can't suddenly turn the S90C into an S95C because then they'd miss out on the profit of the flagship. The only alternative would be to not sell the S90C and instead only the S95C and then no one would be happy. Still worth mentioning though that newly manufactured S90Cs have the same panel as the S95C and would therefore profit from the improved efficiency of the 2nd gen. That also means your review of the S90C is less accurate than your review of the S89C. Not sure how to address this in a way that doesn't urge people on to dive into the service menu to convert their S90Cs into an S95C and without upsetting Samsung

@@BaSiC47 That's like saying an AVR company likes the low license fee for DTS but won't cough up for Dolby due to a fee when all other competitors have support for both Dolby and DTS. The customer base is going to notice when it spits out PCM when you have Dolby supported content playing and want the processing of the AVR to do the decoding. You can always force on a player or TV to use HDR10 or HDR10+ but the consumer would be best served with support for Dolby Vision since alot of support on TV and Film industry have it as a premiums format why pay for for something new if it can't support the premium format for HDR with a price tag saying I'm premium? Seems like a very bad path for consumers who are loyal but want the latest HDR metadata support as they have to make due because of how cheap the company. At some point a percentage of potential loyal to the brand buyers find another competitor who does support Dolby Vision even if Samsung's TVs checks alot of boxes. • @random_n
      @random_n ปีที่แล้ว +10

Definitely a tough use case. Worth noting that brightness plays a huge part in wear, and running under max brightness will prolong the display a great deal. S95C uses a panel that Samsung Display claims to be twice as durable as the S95B's, and Samsung Electronics caps the brightness well under what SDC rates the peak at.
Personally I'm around 1500 hours in on my S95B. Mostly gaming use, and with a few hundred hours of Apex Legends' very harsh HUD in that, but done far under max brightness. Occasional movie night with the brightness cranked _past_ the max too. The image is still perfectly clean.
Rtings added the S95C to the accelerated wear test, so you'll be able to see how the second gen panel fares in a couple months. That test is normalized to each display's max SDR brightness, so results for your own use case would need to be extrapolated from there.

Honestly you cannot really tell the raised black level in a lit room, because if the environment is bright, exposure of the eye goes down too so the raised black looks virtually indistinguishable from perfect black. Plus, no TV has perfect black. Everything reflects some light. Honestly, the reflection handling is probably my favorite thing about the TV. There is such little reflections in it that it almost looks like a window into a different realm and not like something with glass and stuff. Really helps with being immersed in the content.

Not sure if you can tell the difference. All I can say is that HDR (Netflix) content on my S95B looks great after adjusting some tv settings. Light sources coming from objects on the screen look like they're really emitting light while you can still make out details from areas set in the shadow for example. One of the most obvious examples showing massive benefits of Dolby Vision is "The Mandalorian":
Due to the opening credits are mastered twice as bright as the "rest" ... HDR10 limits the peak brightness of the entire show to 450nits (measured by Vincent Teoh from HDTVTest) ... whereas Dolby Vision provides the full 900nits, because it sets the brightnesses frame-by-frame ... independent from the brightness gap created by the opening credits
Means: "The Mandalorian" looks pretty dull on any Samsung tv due to only the static HDR10 is available ... and very impressive on e.g. the A95K with DV ... or any other DV-capable set.

We all know how beautiful the TV image is but here are some things no one is talking about:
    1) Internet Speed - Limited to 10mb over 100mb. So the max download speed you can get on this 2023 device is 100mbs.
    2) NO Google Assistant - Confirmed after speaking with Samsung support. It looks like Samsung has split off from Google Ecosystem and will not support Google Voice Assistant on their newer devices
    3) Built In Audio - Almost no bass. Sounds rather bad. Definitely needs a soundbar.
    4) Low Brightness Ambient Mode - Ambient mode will cause burn-in on OLED TVS so while it's offered it's at a very dim brightness setting with no static images and overall looks meh compared to Samsung QLEDs
    5) Storage - My TV was down to 19% availability right off the bat because of so much pre-installed bloatware
    6) Uninstallable Bloatware - Samsung won't allow you to uninstall anything they've preinstalled for you. The Remove button is greyed out
    7) Laggy Interface - You'd think they'd install a faster processor on their most premium TV but they cheaped out. The TV menu lags and isn't a fluid experience.
    8) Settings Menu - When you go to settings it always will start playing Samsung TV + or whatever other TV app you were using. Like why? Also, why put All settings all the way at the end?
    9) Mounting - Back of the TV is not flush. Required different size spacers on the top and bottom to get an even mount.
-> I opted for the Samsung TV because I use a Samsung/Phone Laptop but I'm realizing there are very few ecosystem benefits and not having Google Assistant is a huge dealbreaker for me. I'll likely be swapping to the lG OLED.

Other than Colur Volume, I don't know why I should buy it. Tizen is a disaster, and Samsung had notorious software/firmware problems throughout almost all the recent years. I don't even mention "no dolby vision" debate. I believe QD OLED's hype died quickly. They promised better longetivity, we saw that was false. We have couple of conventional oleds that can surpass it in regards of brightness... sooo that was a lie too. Where is that sweet sweet 2000 nits ? I have the s95b and calibrated the movie mode with my iPhone and the picture looks amazing. Dolby vision is better suited for high end protectors that cost way more than this tv which is why Samsung rather leave it out the tv. DTS gets converted to dolby atmos. The tv speakers sound great with dolby and doubts it would be better with dts since they are tv speakers after all. You really need high quality connection and play music for 500+ hours in uncompressed format to get the full detail in all audio formats. The dynamics are there regardless. Once you understand how conversion works you will see how it works gracefully to deliver everything through the tv itself without delays. Using a separate sound bar or surround system that supports DTS would be the only way to get that format anyway and pretty sure it wont be much different unless you use a high power class A amp system with better wire connections going to speakers to get that full DTS sound. Honestly DTS and isn’t all that. It works with certain titles after 2018 that have DTS or Atmos. As for dolby vision, HDR + is where its at. Enough said…. Enjoy what you can get since its nothing you will be missing out on unless you are building a true home cinema i would recommend different audio systems and dolby vision compatible tv sets that are at a higher price range. Dobly vision is just HDR rebranded into something like iPhone being fancy Samsung Galaxy phones these days basically. 📺

Something that worries me a little is the separate box for the inputs. It connects to the tv with another cord. Wouldn’t it have any quality issues the more cables you’re running signals through? As opposed to a tv that you just plug cables in the back of the tv itself.

    • @RTINGSdotcom

We definitely understand the concern. Unfortunately, we can’t provide certainty at the moment as we’re looking into some stuff in light of a recent video from Vincent over at HDTV test.
It seems like he discovered the S95C OLED has an HDMI 2.1 bandwidth of 40Gbps, and he suggests the issue could be the One Connect Box as the S90C has 48 Gbps. So, it may have an impact on things, we just can’t say for sure until we gather more data. Sorry about that!

@@nestroit5010 Yeah but LG has good firmware support, good color tracking (and doesn't do shady stuff like making color track differently for reviewers) and have generally better quality control. They also have better gaming features in general. I don't think they needed big changes throughout the years, they improved on thermals and burn-in and some of the small things, but this year is probably the biggest upgrade as MLA is a game changer.

@@cyberedge881 Colours are 65% brighter on a G3 compared to C2 or C3 ... based on +40% through MLA and 25% through the heatspreader.
First reports are indicating colour reproduction on the G3 is equal to QD-OLED with normal use.
Ofc you can still MEASURE a gap with artificial test screens ... but these theoretical colour brightnesses are never demanded by sources.
Apart from that colours on LCD tvs can never be as good as on WRGB-OLEDs, because colours on LCD tvs always require a hig amount of light output from the backlight resulting in every colour is blended with dark grey ... whereas colours on WRGB-OLEDs are pure ... based on 100% black without any dark grey shining through.
