Given there are no brightness or screen coating differences, Samsung could and _should_ make firmware adjustments/improvements on the S95B to make them perform like an 'old panel' S90C. I realise that would make buying the early S90C's fairly pointless but that's Samsung's problem, LG make firmware improvements of this sort to their legacy OLEDs for years after the fact. Samsung should be making the improvements between these two models more stark, by not cheaping out and using this year's panel on the S90C as a starter for 10.

Just to be clear, I'm no LG fanatic and I don't own one. Money no object I'd have a Panasonic. Looking forward to the MZ1500/2000 review.

I set the brightness to 100% (white) on my 55S95b monitor for a total consumption of around 130-140 watts and turned off both peak brightness and contrast enhancement. The temperature stays below 40 degrees with these settings. The reason for the burn-in is the high power density with a 10% window (1000 nits) and thus temperature that cannot be dissipated quickly enough.

Considering the S95B is close to costing half as much as the S90C, I think that's a bit of a no brainer. If you're willing to spend S90C money, the price increase to the S95C, which WILL get you the panel with less burn in, better performance, better features and better sound may very well be worth it.
Bloody shame that they ruined the S90C just to get rid of a couple of panels... and I think it might bite them, because what's the point in the S90C? The S95B is mostly the same TV, in parts it's even better I guess (sound?). It does look better. It is significantly cheaper. And the S90C isn't very compelling, not at the current price. It needs to drop significantly in order to become interesting, even if it had the new panels. But that's going to be lottery, no matter when you buy the TV... you might find old stock.
They could charge more for the S90C if it only had the new panel and was fully unlocked. And they'll be wasting their fantastic panels on TVs that have to sell for less because they aren't making use of those panels. Panels they could be selling to a TV maker that could actually make use of them. But yeah. Samsung making hard to understand decisions isn't uncommon, is it? Like with their insistence on not having DV. They could charge more by it having DV, but nope, it's not there. So they are losing sales to Sony or worse LG.

@Enigma 0: No TV is perfect. At the end of the day, no 2023 sub-flagship OLED TV can outperform the Samsung S90C in these areas:
      - Wide viewing angles without off-axis pink tint

      - No near-black chrominance overshoot artefacts
      - Most relaxed ABL (HDR peak brightness 1000 nits, full-field 200 nits), contributing to most impactful HDR

I suppose you're right though that they'll have to throttle back performance to the old panel level for parity which means you're not getting the full fat version. If that's the case it'll be disappointing - however there will still be superior durability advantages with the 77" s90c for sure.

However there'll be old stocks floating around, so it will take a long time until buyers can be half way certain to get a new panel. If they didn't have many to begin with and are already producing gen 2 models, this decision would be even dumber.
For the S95C I highly doubt that they'll use the old panels, because the TVs wouldn't be able to match specs (and IIRC comparison videos have already shown the superior performance of the S95C).

Well, looks like I get to wait another year before getting a new TV. All of these companies are still skimping on multi-thousand dollar TVs in some area. I already know the A95L will be the TV of the year, but the Pentonic 1000 is a deal breaker. This TV is an S95B V2, which is a deal breaker due to certain audio passthrough limitations and brightness limitations. The G3, while excellent, still uses a panel I personally don't like, but now brighter. A95L is looking great, if Sony can actually get 4 48GB HDMI ports installed. Flagship TVs without all 4 ports being 100% compliant with HDMI 2.1 going forward is unacceptable.

And yeah, same here. The S95B might be worth considering because it's dirt cheap (well, kind of), as sort of a throw away TV for a few years. The S90C isn't compelling at all, because it is bloody expensive considering it's limitations and it being a S95B with an uglier stand. I do not like the LG panels, so most of the market is out (thanks for not adopting QD OLED, Philips and Panasonic!). Sony is going to price the A95L out of reach and will stick to the price tag. Plus I liked the A95K stand, but hated the rest of the design (what's with those nostrils?). Now the A95L is still ugly AND the stands are awful. Great. I do not need 48GB HDMI ports right now, but I feel like whenever I said something like that (my graphics card doesn't need to support 4K gaming...) I almost instantly regret it (by buying a 4K monitor for example). My old TV is 12 years old now, so some future proofing would be nice.

There will not be another major overhaul after just one year. If Mediatek thought this full chip rework does not need to include 4 full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports, they will not change their mind suddenly and spend a lot of money again.

Could someone explain to me the nerf deal, besides the fact that they butchered game mode. Rtings tested the S95B on May 13th, 2022 with firmware v 1211, and the 2% and 10% windows in HDR using 'Filmmaker' mode were 1,028 and 1,036 nits respectively. I'm guessing 'Movie' mode would have been higher still. On July 20th, 2022 Rtings put this in their notes: "We retested the peak brightness in HDR with the latest firmware, 1302. The TV no longer produces bright flashes of around 1400 nits in the 'Movie' and 'Game' modes." Is 1302 the nerf many are talking about? Rtings didn't publish 'Movie' mode results outside of this update, and what are "bright flashes"? If they're talking about specular highlights I can see why many owners are upset.

Yeah! Also, high brightness is an issue because of heat, right? If the panel is only on half the time, heat can't build up as much... so they should be able to increase brightness even more with BFI.
Personally, when trying the S95B, I thought BFI was acceptable. Not as good as with a plasma, but I think I'd be using it with BFI activated, even if my eyes were strained a bit.

Nice to see the QD-OLED providing a noteworthy product. Honestly prefer the highlight clipping, this is stuff we could control on our end considering how bright the thing genuinely is. People often forget how significant of a difference is getting a new panel especially after being several generation behind. There is no need to run this at full intensity. Sufficient enough before this even got announced. This showed they will do everything they possibly can to bring us an experience into groundbreaking territory. No question they will be able to deliver. Innovation wise, knew it would be a bit before they were worth the high cost. Luckily for us, plenty bought the first set compulsively on niche alone which I'll definitely agree it does nicely at it's intended purpose therefore power to us. We'll see how it will hold up in the future. Does it provide everything a user would need for the best timeless OLED television ever? No, not yet. Not even close. This can't be answered by our observation alone currently, only time will tell if they could surpass the benchmark for perfection or be crowned as reference king considering it is still contested territory. One thing is for sure, as with LG they've got a long road to travel with negligible consideration weighing their software down before we see the next quantum leap ( pun intended ) in revolutionary technology

@@pedepsitorulwell my brain tells me the didn't cut the mother glass in that size last year, they can still use that same generation of technology to cut 77 inch panels. Not hard to understand.

Black crush is the thing I hate most about modern TV's and why I won't be buying Samsung anytime soon. Already got LG monitor with it and had this issue in HDR and I had to workaround it for PS5 using expensive HDFury Vrroom by mangling AVI infoframe to make monitor think it gets Full range and using Limited range on console. SDR looks good though. For my next OLED I will do much more research and will probably get QD-OLED but probably not from Samsung - if they do not fix black crush.
