I’m not 100% sure, but I think this is lifted from Nilay Patel at the Verge. He says “what is a photo” about 20 times every episode of the vergecast at this point.

Yeah AI has been cool but the photo generation/manipulation stuff is what I find the most disturbing. Makes me feel uneasy cause I feel like people will just use it for bad.
I remember hearing these complaints by iPhone users when Pixel introduced Magic Eraser & now that Apple is adding this same feature, the same people who had a problem with this are perfectly fine with it. I can already see the same thing is going to happen when Apple copies Google again.
I use iPhone and have tones of screenshots like thousand plus. Having a dedicated screenshot app like in new pixel would be game changing

How is it sick? In my opinion it's pretty useful especially for a couple that goes on vacation somewhere and doesn't have a photographer to take pictures. I don't get all the hate against using AI in pictures.

Theres an interview where one of the engineers from Google explained why they went with the new camera design for the Fold. Its in German. He basically said that they want their phones to be symmetrical but the Fold is already asymmetrical so they believed it to fit the design language more
I think it actually looks good and modern, I have no problem with it and it beats the OPPO Fold in that regard.

I don't mind the asymmetry going with an island over a bar but I wish the housing had a more serious and/or interesting take like Samsung or Honor instead of just a rounded square. Really anything that was vertically oriented was more what I had in mind.
but its all aesthetics at the end of the day and capability is what matters ultimately.
tbh i actually prefer the camera bump of the fold compared to the usual bump. this actually looks compact and manageable.

What is a photo. What I like to think is an 'image' is just a collection of fixed pixels. So a screenshot is an image, a video frame is an image, AI generated image. A 'photo' or a 'photograph' is an 'image' created by captured light using a lens.
This features is pretty insane...I think may other next phone model such as Apple iPhone 16 series would copy this features

As an iPhone user, I have to say I’m really impressed by these new Pixels. The hardware and build quality are top-notch, and the Gemini features are super cool. The only thing missing is a stronger ecosystem. If Google put the same effort into Chromebooks as they do with Pixel phones-improving the design and integrating more AI-it would seriously complete their lineup. That’s when I’d seriously consider switching over.
It would be nice if Google would make Chromebooks good but they'd have a LOT of work to do
Well I use a Chromebook Plus with many AI Gimmicks, and Im happy. It works nice with my Pixel, but I agree it could be so much better integrated!

Can we talk about the 9:43 cartoons on the display while taking pictures? Completely underrated! Anyone with a kid can tell you how difficult it is to get a toddler to watch in the right direction for a photo and this may not work everytime, but it would still help 😂

I have a Google Pixel Pro 7 and it's still awesome. I was going to get the 8 Pro and give this one to my sister to upgrade her old phone, but the 9 Pro XL is out, so I will be getting that in a while. No urgency, but maybe in a few months. I used to use that real popular protective case brand for all my phones for years, but earlier this year I got the dBrand case with black leather for my Pixel 7 Pro and my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra which still works great. I actually love these cases. Just as protective, but skimmer and more compact, the look and feel, and the case doesn't start deforming or deteriorating blue the rubber outer case of that other brand over time. I will definitely be getting the dBrand case and screen protectors when I get my Pixel 8 Pro XL.

That Screenshots app is actually really helpful. At least I hope it works in a way, that it doesn't blend screenshots with your photos, which is great, I really appreciate it. I hate how on iPhone, all your photos, memes you save from Facebook or whatever and all of your screenshots all blend together and there's no way to split them to be their own thing.

Google has always had on device folders for screenshots, downloads, (camera) photos, etc.
I think there's a way, it's called "albums" just one bottom tap

I was taking lots of pictures and it was draining battery like crazy, also it was overheating all the time.
Maybe it's fine if you live in cold climate, but in Spain it was unusable for me, snapdragons are wayyyy better.

and another aspect of life that's become obsolete. No more asking strangers to take a photo of you and your friend, then learning a bit about them and having a cool memory to look back on. I eagerly await the day humans no longer need to interact with strangers in any way ever 🙃

Wow. This Pixels look beautiful and like actual flagships. As someone who has always looked at Samsung as the go-to Android flagship king, the Pixel has come back swinging hard. Color, specs, hardware, and software which has always been great. 10/10.
I much prefer Samsung's One UI to Google's stock Android look. It looks too 2015 for me.

I actually love the idea behind the screenshot app because I don't know how many times I've screenshot something with the injection of looking into that thing later, only to forget.

- Overheating issue still relevant? Eg with bluetooth / carplay + gmaps + music or something
- 30fps filming quality (choppiness/stablisation lag)
- tempretures during filming of 4k footage
- no case desk stability with the camera bump, i know you often point this out anyway
- gemini hallucinations (might be a bit of a broad subject)
- gemini vs standard google assistant for simple "google-able" questions (eg: whats the tempreture in italy today)
- is 'Ok Google' still going to be a thing? For assitant? For Gemini?

All 3. Gemini Nano is the best local smartphone LLM. The camera on the Pixel 7 Pro is fantastic and this looks great too. The hardware looks nice as well. I got a 9 Pro and I'm excited about the smaller phone. The AI updates over the next few years will be great too.

I was set on moving away from Google until MKBHD's review of the Pixel 6 convinced me to give it a try. A few months in, with the phone overheating in warm weather and fingerprint scanner issues, I was done. I do miss some of Google’s great software features, but now I just watch out of curiosity.

i am the same way got the pixel 8 but the the tensor chip was just a big let down, constantly had no data issues, phone heated up really bad with android auto. had to trade it in
Same , I use the pixel 6a and it's the trashiest phone ever , network issues , heating issues , lag in UI etc....absolutely pathetic.
Didn't have an issue with fingerprint reader, but did have heat issue with Android Auto in 100 degree weather
I had the 4a then moved to the 8 then switched to Samsung. My Pixel overheated during video calls and would slow down. There was just no real reason to stay.

Probably because lawnmower is one word, but that doesn't really excuse Google from knowing better. People very frequently misspell or outright butcher language when they search and it finds stuff.

During the google unveiling event, they said something like the weather app is the most used app on people's phone and I could not relate at all. Glad to see I'm not the only one. The screenshots app is really the only thing this phone offers that makes me really want it

I switched from Samsung to Pixel when the Pixel 7 launched and I've been extremely happy. The Samsung devices are a lot more powerful, but I just love how fast and snappy the Pixel phones are. The cameras are extremely good (especially for photos), and the UI simplicity + frequent updates are nice.
I'll be getting a 9 Pro XL to replace my 7 Pro.

I have used samaung for 10+ years now and am pretty happy with samsung, I've never used apple or Google but I would definitely be interested in trying out apple and Google as they both seem like great phones.
Lies. Pixel 7 overheats and the camera crashes whenever it gets hot.
I am happy with my P7 Pro coming from a Note 10+, but I'm having a hard time staying with Google. If their foldables are good they may keep me.
