      Idaho and Montana. Incredible scenery. There's a reason they call Montana Big Sky Country. The south-west area of Montana has mountains galore, rivers, paths to bike. Lots of different animals to see. Elk, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and bears, to name a few. NO sales tax, on anything. The beauty is more than I ever guessed it would be. You bet I would like to take that van on a trip!!

    Thank you guys so very much for doing a van tour! I've been wanting to see a visual of people actually traveling and living in it (not just the dealership videos). My hubs and I visited a dealership last month to see this van in person. We love the off-road, all season, and solar aspects of the van. We're finishing up on downsizing our lives right now to only van essentials and about to get our house on the market so we can transition into van life. We think this will be a great fit for our love of adventures and travels. Really enjoy your channel (have been for a while now)-keep up the great work :)

    Nice vid. I prefer the homemade van build videos though. We've owned two trailers, one which we completely gutted and rebuilt, and the other that was modified heavily. We also owned a beautiful pre-made 35 foot motorhome with barely any mods made to it other than our office was created in the dash area. BUT... the most fun we've ever had was in our van which we built out ourselves and took it solo and with the camper that we gutted. I don't know, something about putting the work into it to make it "your own", y'know? Just my own preference, but I'm sure you love your conversion more, right?

    Lots of comments from people that cannot understand that there is a market for this kind of van in the US. The same people that have $100,000 plus off road vehicles and go to Glamis for long weekends. Others tow their flashy ski boats to the Colorado river for a few days. Then there are the people, hunting, fishing,checking utility lines, fiber optic lines and doing land surveys. It’s amazing how much available cash some people have. There are many Winnebago RVs that cost way more than this one and you cannot go off-road.
    A few people even claiming the build quality is cheap and shoddy without actually ever going inside one. Winnebago are definitely one of the better builders.’There is a company called Boho that sells camper vans for less than $50, but it’s 2 wheel drive, no awning, toilet, solar, shower, a/c, water tanks I.e not self contained.

    • @gh0stdem0n666

      Never buy from a company, its cheaper to biuld one yourself even without experience

    • @terrancecoard388
      @terrancecoard388 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of folks have no idea about Americans and their disposable incomes...I have seen a Hummer hauling a trailer with six ATV's heading for Glamis filling up outside Yuma. Gas was particularly expensive at the time. At the next pump was their huge motorhome. That was before the 2008 recession though. That is still typical of what you would see on any weekend in beautiful Arizona or the southwest. 150K is not a problem for a lot of people looking into an RV but I would not spend it on this unit but see the appeal for people not accustomed to the outdoors. From the first time I saw these vans I thought it would make a great RV. I would get the basic domestic model, make a custom bed, some comfortable chairs, work on the suspension and get good tires. I would get a great 6 man tent and a good dining fly and set it up as a kitchen/lounge area and just sleep in the van. Then again...I am looking at it as a hunter and not someone that gives a hoot about impressing anyone. I would go to sleep at night thinking about the 80K I saved. Was not married at the time so none of what I said really matters...those days are past. There is a Class C in the driveway....My wife loves it...I love my wife.

    • @FredBTs
      @FredBTs 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      eh6794 RVs should never go off road because body flex can cause all sorts of problems plus I would never park in sand in my C class. Last time I was at Pismo one get stuck in the sand and the incoming tide destroyed it. It happens a lot!. We have a 1998 Chateau 24 ft. with 98,000 miles. You can pick up a 10 yr old C with low miles for about $20K.

  • @edysinsimon8646
    @edysinsimon8646 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I get it. I would like to own one for sure! However, "I" would rather purchase the "stock" configured as a 4X4 standard wheelbase sprinter cargo van and then "kit out" it to my specific tastes and requirements! For $150K I'm fairly certain "I" could come up with "my" ideal all seasons/weather travel master! I do like he sleeping arrangements of this winnebago rig. But it to would be a issue of/for my design/intention of use. ALL diesel powered appliances with the addition of a solar powered battery charging system, and I'm good to go...

    You have a beautiful van, I love it. You have utilized the space very well. I know some people think that $150,000 is too expensive but you have a Mercedes and your completely self contained. Plus it's a 4X4, how cool is that? You are able to go off road exploring wherever you want. You do pay up front for a Mercedes, but you save on fuel, hotel rooms, eating out, etc. With this Mercedes you will be exploring where most people with their RV's cannot go. Happy Travels!

      Yeah, parts of the interior of this van are of ancient design, look and finishings. The laminate cupboards look like they're from the 70s. On the other hand, the euroloft bed, combo shower/cassette toilet/storage are pretty cool. As is the solar power. Didn't have that in the 70s.

    I'm glad you all can see some of America in style! Hope you get some good ideas for your own build. The class B vehicles are so expensive for their size, so I guess they are competing in a relatively small segment of the RV market. Hymer's recent purchase of Roadtrek will pressure others to complete. I suspect the Revel was designed for this purpose, but I don't really know. I love these little vans, but they are out of my price range.

    So odd to see you both in a commercial rig, but I'm glad Winnie set you up for touring here in the U.S. Self-built vans are homey, and I'm waiting for companies to catch up to the idea that young van lifers want real wood, fabrics, and texture. This van has some nice features, but it just isn't home.

    • @theindieprojects
      @theindieprojects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Totally agree! The homey feeling isn’t there - practical for sure but not many homes are like this are they?!

    • @4wdhome106
      @4wdhome106 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love real wood, real stone etc, but not in a van. It has to be easy cleanable surfaces (this home is supposed to stay out “in the dirt”), and low weight, the hominess can be done with colours and simple decorations, choice of chairs etc. The weight is also an issue, most vans have a 3500kg limit, and that’s usually not really enough.

    • @FredBTs
      @FredBTs 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      cesalt We have a 97 24ft Class C. It’s completely self contained for a few days, till the waste tank gets too full but I could see living in it with hook ups and we intend to. We have applied to be camp ground hosts in a coastal State Park. Ours runs great, has no roof leaks, fridge, a/c, generator, awning all good but it’s worth no more than $10K and you could probably find a similar one In November for a lot less. Not very good MPG and definitely not for off road . So there are plenty of fairly cheap options.

      The actual out the door price the initial Revels sold for was commonly $109K. With a couple price increases and some new, non-negotiable items included on the Sprinter portion of the van directly from Mercedes, a loaded Revel ordered after mid-Feb. 2018 has a common out the door price of $115K.

      The Indie Projects We have done a few trips now in our Hymer Grand Canyon S 4x4, which is sprinter based unlike the Westfalia. Worth a check out as a UK comparison. 👍

    Has traveling in it made you rethink anything about your build? Specifically, the MaxAir fan?

    I'm wondering how you use the bed. Do you leave it down or put it up every day? Also does it look like it's possible to remove the cassette toilet and put in a Nature's head?

    • @theindieprojects
      @theindieprojects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We kept the bed down as we didn’t need to put anything under it other than suitcases. I reckon you probably could put a natures head in there - maybe as a request when they’re building it in the factory?

    The winterization valve isn't for winter use. It's for when you park it in the winter.

    Great presentations by both of you. My question relates to the handling characteristics of the Sprinter. Being as tall as it is, is it not somewhat top heavy and, therefore, do you have to be especially careful turning and driving on uneven roads with slanted surfaces?

    • @theindieprojects
      @theindieprojects  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! You’re right you definitely have to be more careful than a standard lower 4x4 but I was so impressed with what this van could handle.

    Is there only one bed height where you can sleep on the bed ? Or will it hold your weight at variable heights ?

    Very nice review, thorough and entertaining. The Revel looks like a really cool vehicle to get off the beaten path especially for young people like yourselves. Don't pay any attention to the grouchy trolls. Welcome to America and enjoy traveling the wonderful USA!

    Is the water heater off the battery? Would it be a problem if it was overcast I wonder. I've been drooling over this van even since it was a single concept vehicle!

    • @theindieprojects
      @theindieprojects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The water heater runs from either the diesel heater or AC if hooked up to mains power 😊

    • @4wdhome106
      @4wdhome106 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Duncan Wallace I guess you’ll first have to choose between one of the companies making these (4-5 of them I believe, this might be the best, I don’t know) and make your adjustments!
      All three heating (cooking, shower, cabin) has to be diesel fueld, gas doesn’t last that long, electricity is usually not available, and extra diesel use is solved by an double tank. The outlet from the diesel tank to the engine remain in the bottom of the tank, the outlet for diesel to heating are higher up on the tank, so heating won’t make the car stuck.

    • @duncanwallace7760
      @duncanwallace7760 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      diesel is a good option because you don't have to do anything extra to refuel the heating!

    How comfortable is the bed? I stayed in a toy hauler with a bed like that and it was not so great. Thin matress and an uncomfortable metal edge on the base. This one looks like it is low enough to be cozy.

    • @theindieprojects
      @theindieprojects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We were super sceptical about the bed but after 3 weeks on it we can honestly say it was very nice.
