A hydraulic drop from the ceiling style bed is my favorite way of ensuring a bed is always ready and gives you seating underneath during the day which then gives space for a bathroom and kitchen.
@@francesnance9110 with all the stuff mounted/placed on the floor, I doubt it. Sure there will be some weight on top but not enough of a difference between top and bottom to be considered "top heavy". Interesting. I have a concept in my mind a bit like a roller garage door, a slatted bed base board and attached compressible mattress that rolls up, into a roll near the roof at the back doors (slats joined with strong webbing bands). When deployed side guide rails on the van walls each side guide it as it unrolls down to sort of the normal rear bed position, like they do on the garage doors. As an engineer the holy trinity of vans bed-toilet-shower in smallest space are a fascinating challenge, everything else can work round those.
Most full time vanlifers will tell you they never use their shower and end up converting the space to something else (it's all very well to have a shower but to have to access and carry around the water needed to run it....)
I like the way you think! You sound like me. I've thought of something like this too but it sounds like you're actually getting it figured out! Yes we have engineers in my family lol. And I'm grateful that I got some of their genetics 😅
@@nsmith3128 pretty much. Washing (body wipes, pressurised pump spray bottles, bathing natural water sources - anything to save on water usage; you can keep clean without actually having a shower). Many will have a shower every other day at a gym (some will even check in to a caravan park once a week to shower and do laundry); but if you're off grid that's not an option - and if you're off grid where do you fill up your water? And carrying a whole heap takes up a heap of space plus it's very heavy - so that's extra in mileage). Don't forget all the other things you need to use water for other than drinking and showering - there's laundry and cleaning.... When you take all that into account you begin to see why including a shower in your rig becomes impractical
I got a 2020 Transit Medium roof in May. I'm going to build my bed in a DIAGONAL across the back. I'll be able to open the back door and step up into a triangular "mud room" with a pull-out toilet underneath. There will be triangular spaces at the head and foot of the bed, and I'll be able to sleep full length, without sleeping diagonal in a cross-bed. I already have swivel seats at the front, so I'll have a large space for the kitchen/dining area. I plan on using unistrut so I can dismantle, or even re-arrange if I want/ need to. BTW...this is my 12th van since 1973, after I came back from Europe where I saw VW vans all over the place.
Alot of great ideas. However, I love a fixed bed. Who wants to send time messing around with pulling, pushing, turning, cushions, when you can just hop into bed? IMHO, I keep my bed fixed, even tho I can turn it into a seating area.
The vertical boards on the wall next to your bed visually extend the height of the van making it look like the roof is taller. I might pinch that idea!!
I like it when a bed design includes provision for bedding and pillows which some if these are great at, but some are not. Having to store and set up bedding every time is a pain. I think it's what makes the humble rock and roll so good, there's a natural spot behind the backrest to roll up and store this stuff.
So many great ideas.. i love 10 the Triple Bed the most i think, though.... i do also love the lift bed and the van that the bed melts into the sidewall. i like multifunction, day time is this - and night time converts to this rather than being a standard fixed design., And even though it's just for me........ The double bed slide out in the kitchen area option 10 is enough. The back section can be shower toilet, storage, a single spare sleeping spot or storage for a tent for guests etc etc. I love the vibe, aesthetics, decor of this van most of all. The clock Lol, just love it.
just finishing my bed in my swb transit at the minute, , it replaced the front double seat, is usable as a sofa in the camper area, works as the double seat in the van cab, and is also a full width full length single bed
9:56 Flip Down Bed appeals to me; quick, easy, manual. 12:43 Manual Bed Lift is also VERY fun, but w/ 1st one would be able to put shower in rear. This may also be able to accommodate rear shower... The sliding privacy wall is brilliant!
I personally think a hydraulic lift bed is the way to go in that it gives you space underneath to create a lounge area etc or a great place to store bikes or other sporting gear. Flexibility, l believe is really important in a van.😊
High fail rate and what do you do if that happens when you're out in the middle of nowhere? (They're expensive and an expensive fix). The manual 1 is a much better option cos more realistic
The first setup is absolutely genius! I'm designing my own overland trailer and you just solved my issue with want a fixed bed (at least a queen) and and table area to eat and work from. But I have to admit the Murph setup is bomb diggity!!! Awesome!
I have a beautiful print cover over my bed, so it looks great all the time. I could roll up my mattress and strap it and snap the bench seats into place, pull out the hidden table if I need it, all in ~5 mins. But I don't need it because I have a fold away hidden table and a swivel chair in my galley, where I can eat inside by a window. Or, I can sit outside in a fold-up chair to eat, or use the picnic table. ALL NO- WORK OPTIONS! LOVE IT!
In my bus I plan on having a fixed bed in the back and then mattress can lift up like a lid for the clothing storage(and I can have my water tank down there too cause the amount of clothes I have would fill about 1/3 of the space) I’ve never liked the idea of convertible furniture cause for me, it sounds like too much of a hassle to, for example, make the bed into a dining area, when i can just sit on the bed with a lap table. I’d rather sit on my bed than a chair and table.
Why do you have to make what should be a complete sentence but instead every sentence ends in a question? Someone tell me why is bad grammar so popular?
These work great when you’re young. We each need to get up 3-4 times a night and without waking the other. My wife is also not going to climb up into a bed. I’m thinking 2 singles in either a twin Murphy bunk bed arrangement or L shape with mine up high across the back. Climbing is not a problem for me. We each are forced to be side sleepers which mitigates my 76” length.
Murphy bed wins. I would have added a tv so she can watch from bed but otherwise perfect. BUT…. I would have given the electronic, drop down bed number one but she didn’t show how it looked when fully up against the ceiling. Can’t tell if there’s enough head room during the day. If there is- that’s the winner with the Murphy Bed #1A.

Your van bed layout is exactly what we had envisioned for ours. Where did you get the mattress plug/extension? I am having trouble finding anything like it.
murphy wins. Single pivot with positive latch is bomber. as a mechanical engineer, you typically want to choose the most robust solution unless the client has specified something else. If I were to upgrade, perhaps do a slam latch, or get cute with making the Murphy wall functional for daytime. Linear systems suck unless you overdesign which means $$$ and space to house components. A parallel four bar would be my suggestion if the client wanted a bed to hug the ceiling during the day, a solution used in motor homes from days gone by.
Things I want, if I lived in a van: #1. 1000 watt microwave. #2 Good sized freezer, for 400 frozen sandwiches, frozen vegies and frozen meat and fish. #3 Tools, gear and a 40+ gallon water tank under the bed. #4 Ceramic wall heater. #4 200 cans of soup. #5 2500w Power Station hooked up to solar on the roof, or a SphereMotor. #6 A sponge. #7 Coffee maker and a rice cooker. #8 A good wall cabinet setup. #9 Pullout toilet under the seat. For dinner put some frozen vegies in microwave and then add a can of soup. Next microwave a frozen sandwich. Next wet hair, add shampoo and then rinse in the sink with warm water from the microwave. Next clean body with warm sponge. Next turn on the Ceramic Wall Heater. Next, be free and happy.
Nate, I’ve registered for your course. But I’m too old and too unskilled to build my own van. I do want my own design (No gas, half-height shower and wc and a rear lounge with ceiling bed so high lithium and battery spec. Can you recommend a builder for such a van , please? Stuart

Can someone tell me how to wire the lights into the bottom of the floating bed (bed lift) without having exposed, trailing wires when the bed goes up and down please
Yes, I am nit picking but why do I hear so many people calling the floor the ground and the ground the floor? The ground is outside, the floor is inside 😊 7:45
I am still alive.. I have been crazy busy on a more academic project (a book on ideas and ideology). I hope to get back a bit more to 'being in videos' in the coming year. (I will need to promote it after all).
Top 10 campervan bed designs, but none from Humble Road, Sam's Van pretty standard fixed double, but it's electric so reclines, Mr & Mrs Sprinter van part electric part sliding longways mounted queensize electric reclining head end slides back to make it more compact in day use, Van 01 fold out futon couch in day bed at night easy to do
R&R is best. You can buy a R&R bed system for £200 and about the same for cushions, make it as wide and long as you want. Held in with 6 bolts, you get a proper sofa and you can even get them with seat belts. Going from sofa to bed 1 second, from bed to sofa 5 seconds and you can store bedding behind the sofa.
The half flip up bed is my favorite one, it just seems so easy and not many steps! I kinda wish I could live the van lifestyle, but I can't drive and vans are expensive.
oh man, i feel like my bed needs to be in your 2024 version. its on drawer slides and pulls open, and slides back into a couch for the day. the mattress (queen) is all one piece and doesnt need to be made in order to open and close it
My 22' Winnebago Rialta has a rear double bed, with an open shelf and full view window behind, where I can set my DVD/TV. I can sit in my galley's swivel chair or on the bed (always made up) and lean against the wall with a comfy bed or wedge pillow. NO-work Cozy TV nook! I think it Trumps all of these "beds." That said, I'm one person and only 5 ft 8.
I saw a mini van with a bed width wise behind the two front seats! I got excited because I can fit in it, 5’ . Haven’t been able to find it since! Do you know of it? 😂
@@rosscoooo4854 it depends on your definition of a bed, it's where we sleep. Also, last week was the first time we slept in a 'proper' bed and mattress and OMG never again, both of us were so uncomfortable, the mattress aged us 30 years. We were all aching.
@@EdurtreG everyone sleeps differently and it's important to respect people's choices and priorities. Floor beds are proven to help align the spine and skeleton and we have found that to be true in our case. I don't know how the floor bed will feel as we age, but will react to life as it happens and adjust. For the record, we clean our floor, and we are all animals just like you. 😉
How come I have a full size ProMaster yet my twin size bed seems to take up most of the room? Everybody else's vans look bigger. Is it a fisheye lens or something?
they have an interesting definition of a queen bed.. tht doesnt even look like a double? all those beds require able bodies or electrics, bear that in mind. nice though.
Yep, that’s right, the floor is inside and the ground is outside. It’s not hard to differentiate between the two. And why do people call BREAKS when they meant BRAKES? They make it so hard on themselves.☹️
Truck manufacturers put a closable upper bunk in lots and lots of highway trucks... I don't understand why van builders don't ever buy one for the shelf and mechanism... There has to be some wrecker somewhere lol
I’m making a transverse bed lift where the frame rides on rails and expands or collapses across the width of the van while hugging one wall as it is lowered or raised. A repurposed bench cushion fills in the foot of the bed on the opposite wall after the bed has been lowered. I’ve spent a fair amount of time on the structural engineering details and it’s not at all straightforward. This bed is for a Sprinter 144 to make better use of living space. I’ve only seen one other transverse lifting bed and that one had deep fixed cushions to fill in the gaps on both sides which significantly cuts into the living space below. Not ideal. I think there are some pretty good reasons why we don’t see bed lifts like the one I have in mind but that also makes it an interesting design challenge so we’ll see how it goes.
Electric Bed Lift . Who Does Work Like That ? That's the Only one I care for . There has to be a 2 nd way to get it down if Electric Goes out . Comment's Are A Extra To Your BOOK . A win winner .Smart Guy
i prefer the electric bed lift but... this one doesn't have windows .... i prefer the electric bed lift with side windows, for viewing when I want to sit and relax and gaze outside without going outside.
I thought that 1 was the best design. It was the bed on the floor that I thought crazy - I was fine about it just being a thin mattress but then she's adding blanket after blanket? Rather defeats the purpose of those thin floor mattresses
@@susie9893 there is a simpler version to no 1 where they slide out the bed extension, and also another slide out dining table between those 2 bench, but definitely more complex carpentry work
As a solo traveller, I’m not impressed. So much waste of space and time and accessories such as levellers and blocks to achieve a level sleeping spot. Long live the hammock and its compact stuff-able and stow-able accessories.
You have such interesting videos, Nate but the background music is driving me nuts. So unnecessary to add another layer of noise to videos, when you speak thru the whole video, and are doing tours and demos.

murphy wins.
Too much crap. You need to simplify
Hi Nate, what is the flip bed mattress made of to fold so easily. Many thanks
I wouldn’t want to bother with a convertible bed; but if I did, #3 IKEA seems like the easiest and quickest.
min 13.50 my fav. all good ideas too
15:30 that looks interesting
could make another slider on the opposite side lol
Don't forget to address the mold issue
the best bed is a fixed bed with a garage under
its the best use of space, many of the other beds lost precious storage spaces
Takes too much room during day
Just being used for storage (under)
That’s prime real estate there
Murphy prob best solution. Just very expensive
@@YeshuaKingMessiah lets put it this way, its a camper van. You are supposed to explore outside the van in the day, not stay in it
Fixed large single with extensions seems a great mix.
That is so cool, well done
Is there another tour dedicated to the last one only ?
I love the MurphY bED concept ! that's for me 😍
I wish you'd shown that last bed being pulled out. I've seen builds like that before but not really in action (ie lived in)
Nate, I’ve registered for your course. But I’m too old and too unskilled to build my own van. I do want my own design (No gas, half-height shower and wc and a rear lounge with ceiling bed so high lithium and battery spec. Can you recommend a builder for such a van , please? Stuart
Drop me an email here www.thevanconversionguide.com/contact/ I can put you in touch with a guy if you are UK based.
15:30 imagine a stranger trespass into your vehicle while you are in bed, you have the option to quickly create a barrier with that slide out and it contains all the guns on your side lol
Telling someone you are an American without saying you are an American---
Cool love the bunk bed
So the one with blankets on the floor counts as a bed ?
Can someone tell me how to wire the lights into the bottom of the floating bed (bed lift) without having exposed, trailing wires when the bed goes up and down please
Great video, although I am still looking for an idea how to store 4 bikes and sleep 4 people (2 adults, 2 kids), any suggestions?
I’m a VAN??
Lol
Yes, I am nit picking but why do I hear so many people calling the floor the ground and the ground the floor? The ground is outside, the floor is inside 😊 7:45
Nate! You still exist!
I am still alive.. I have been crazy busy on a more academic project (a book on ideas and ideology). I hope to get back a bit more to 'being in videos' in the coming year. (I will need to promote it after all).
Top 10 campervan bed designs, but none from Humble Road, Sam's Van pretty standard fixed double, but it's electric so reclines, Mr & Mrs Sprinter van part electric part sliding longways mounted queensize electric reclining head end slides back to make it more compact in day use, Van 01 fold out futon couch in day bed at night easy to do
Can you put some links to them?
@@heythave Humble Road TH-cam channel, finished vans
Yeah, it's 4 for me.
Hello- Where is part one video? The link brings this one up again. Searched your channel, coming up empty handed. Thanks.

@@NateMurphyI can't get the link to work ☹️
R&R is best.
What’s an R&R bed system? Sorry I’m new to this stuff.
fun video, thanks alot!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Is there a link to the last van, the triple bed?
That was my van, John and I sold it last year to find our new build. 🫶
The half flip up bed is my favorite one, it just seems so easy and not many steps! I kinda wish I could live the van lifestyle, but I can't drive and vans are expensive.
Just wondering how do u guys manage security? Like when ur away etc
oh man, i feel like my bed needs to be in your 2024 version. its on drawer slides and pulls open, and slides back into a couch for the day. the mattress (queen) is all one piece and doesnt need to be made in order to open and close it
Great ideas. TFS. ❤
Number 7 is absolute genius. I really wish I thought of sleeping on the floor before building a bed 🙄
2 years on, its comfier than any bed prior we've had. Inspiration from the Japanese :)
@@FreedomStrider I’m sure it is. But it’s not a bed, is it. It’s the floor with a mattress topper chucked on it !
Never again. Did it for over 35 years and ruined my back. Besides, the floor is for feet, animals and the dirt that comes with those.
Hey mr murphy, Is this book white van bild on danis to?
How come I have a full size ProMaster yet my twin size bed seems to take up most of the room? Everybody else's vans look bigger. Is it a fisheye lens or something?
Hello. Bit cheeky but what is the name of the chap in the last video. He looked like he had some other good ideas we would like to look at.
Hello he is John my husband. 🫶
As long as it suit your style.
How about sleeping 8?
they have an interesting definition of a queen bed.. tht doesnt even look like a double? all those beds require able bodies or electrics, bear that in mind. nice though.
Yep, that’s right, the floor is inside and the ground is outside. It’s not hard to differentiate between the two. And why do people call BREAKS when they meant BRAKES? They make it so hard on themselves.☹️
looking for a design for a bunkbed ? Is we are a little older we would likt to step out of bed on de side instead of at the end. anybody ?
Truck manufacturers put a closable upper bunk in lots and lots of highway trucks... I don't understand why van builders don't ever buy one for the shelf and mechanism... There has to be some wrecker somewhere lol
*chuckle*. I still haven’t seen anyone build a bed like mine yet. There are so many ways to go about it.
Tell me more please 🙏🏼
@@multiplysixbynine sounds very unique !!
I sure hope you can get a van tour video up of your bed system.
Electric Bed Lift . Who Does Work Like That ? That's the Only one I care for . There has to be a 2 nd way to get it down if Electric Goes out . Comment's Are A Extra To Your BOOK . A win winner .Smart Guy
How about an adjustable bed
i prefer the electric bed lift but... this one doesn't have windows .... i prefer the electric bed lift with side windows, for viewing when I want to sit and relax and gaze outside without going outside.
7:50 lady: its really easy and takes only a minute
doggo looking confused af: this crazy hooman do this every day
I thought that 1 was the best design. It was the bed on the floor that I thought crazy - I was fine about it just being a thin mattress but then she's adding blanket after blanket? Rather defeats the purpose of those thin floor mattresses
@@susie9893 there is a simpler version to no 1 where they slide out the bed extension, and also another slide out dining table between those 2 bench, but definitely more complex carpentry work
Nel van il letto è importante ,ma anche il wc e la doccia, preferisco i van europei
11:00 wtf haha basically there is no bed!
As a solo traveller, I’m not impressed. So much waste of space and time and accessories such as levellers and blocks to achieve a level sleeping spot. Long live the hammock and its compact stuff-able and stow-able accessories.
13:10 this is how she keep fit
😂 true.
You have such interesting videos, Nate but the background music is driving me nuts. So unnecessary to add another layer of noise to videos, when you speak thru the whole video, and are doing tours and demos.
#9...how can I say that? well in fact whatever bed would be just fine with me! :-)
Wish the gal with the murphy bed would have turned it slower. I have it on 1/5 speed and still it goes so fast i cant hardly tell HOW it works.
