To me the music is less intense and dark in the cd version. I wish i could've played it with this music. The other one is more dark. Edit: the other one did have some bangers and intensified the game at some parts. Especially the tube of medusa ost.
The first ecco cd game had better sountrack in my opinion while the mega drive version sounds not very good. On the contrary, the mega drive version of this game it's more dark and goes better with the theme, this one is good too but it doesn't hit the same level of intensity at certain moments, specially the moray abyss theme used in bosses and lunar bay.
i know this is late but that code at the end of the game was going to be used for a cancelled Ecco 3 game, where Ecco would've gone searching for the Atlanteans. sadly it never came to be and there's been no news of another Ecco game or a spiritual successor.
It's too bad that Ecco: The Tides of Time ended in a cliffhanger, since Ecco 3 was cancelled and there were no plans to make an actual sequel to The Tides of Time. SEGA should have plan, invest properly and make contingency plan on the sequel, it makes anyone wonder what happen to Ecco at the end and what was the story of Ecco 3 is about.

Annunziata hasn't given up on a new ecco game yet, it's admirable. Even by today's standards, it's a pretty strange game saga and the fact that a game that only nowadays an indie studio would come up with is so popular tells a lot how he deserves to go with it. Hope Sega finally listens.
And yes, I understand that this is for a CD console, but the graphics are pretty much the same from the original game. What truly caught my eyes were the cutscenes. It makes me think of 16-bit graphics being turned into 3-Dimensional graphics. They look a lot better here than Sonic 3D Blast to be honest.
@@Flamestar320 Those were videos, that's why they looked good. The mega cd couldn't do anything more advanced than pixel rotation like snes mode 7. Maybe 32x could, still Saturn or PSX would have been the better choice. We still have the dreamcast version, it's a fine game too.

I loved this game as a kid, I've never seen this CD version with the better music, this is really cool. I actually used to play the original Ecco at a friend's house because I didn't have a Genesis, I had a Game Gear though and I had Tides of Time for that. I think I was able to finish it, although it's a bit different than this version (definitely doesn't look as good or sound as good) but I remember the time travel bits with the water tubes near the end, so it must be very similar.
I had this game, probably in the far 1995, when I was 10yo. I very liked it, and I remember that I started to translate english into italian thanks to this game because I wanted to understand what it said! I have very good memories of it.
Something I just figured out. The Sega CD has earth in its intro. After the Sega CD, the 32x was codenamed Project Mars. Then came the Sega Saturn. Earth, Mars, Saturn.
I wish to see the Ecco games remastered or continued and given the 2020+ experience. I believe returning to gaming roots such as these would be an amazing venture and experience for any who participate. I'm tired of the all the new age bells and whistles and would love to return to a game just like this with the new graphical designs and elements 2020+ brings to the table.

The creator of the game (Ed Annunziata) clarified that Ecco used the time machine to go back to the past to help the Atlanteans fight the Vortex. That would have been the premise of the third game, had he been allowed to make it. It's a shame the third game wasn't made, but at least the ending to Tides of Time isn't so sad knowing that tidbit.
I played this game as a kid and came back for nostalgia. Man I forgot weird game this was, flying telepathic dolphins, underwater aliens, waterways in the sky, giant flying jellyfish with spikes, wtf. I'm convinced the creator of this game was on drugs at this point.
From the visuals to the sound the game is a real treat and looks way better than a 16 bit game has any business looking. From the fishy Sega logo at power up to the demo looping... it sounds so beautiful. The first Ecco's music was so ... depressing / suffocating, but thankfully that's not the case here. I still haven't managed to beat either of the games though. :D
I always wondered why the cutscene at 36:00 differs from the one at 1:01:25. The attacks against him are more severe in the 1:01:25 cutscene than in the 36:00 one. I never understood this inconstancy.

But when I first watched this ending from TH-cam, I don't know, I found it strangely interesting that it had such a vague or ambiguous ending. thecowboy2 In general the Ecco games avoided using humanity even though we saw background graphics suggesting castle ruins, and of course the Atlanteans whose city contains depictions of themselves. I think it is save to assume that in Ecco's timeline there was either no humanity or that it (represented by the Atlanteans) removed itself from most of history after loosing the last war with the Vortex and escaping into the past.
It’s not compared to The Original version, the old one is way better and it has the most unique music collection. Every stage had a mysteries music will let you dive emotionally in the game. But what i hear here is just relaxing music and that’s it.
This game was meant to be played with the original Mega Drive music, the CD sound track is just out of place and it keeps on looping, should have been an optional or a give away bonus

The music in this game is very pretty
It's got nothing on the original...it's just basic slow, relaxing ambiance. I miss the old music.

The one thing I know of the planned third game in the planned trilogy was that Ecco was going to try and find the Atlanteans.

The real hero of time is a dolphin. I never seen link kill no vortex alien queen with just his witz he could barely kill a giant pig. Zing!

I agree. Ecco looks like a refreshing game on the eyes but in reality it's one hell of a frustration if you don't see the walkthrough.
