I wish the Mirage comics got more recognition. The only cartoon that mostly borrowed from it to my knowledge was the 03 cartoon. It would be nice to see a series that actually adapts the Mirage comics.
TMNT is not alone in this. The Mask, Men in Black, the entire post-MCU Marvel comics have also been overshadowed by casual-friendly adaptations. I could give you a dozen more examples from gaming if I had nothing to do today.
I've only read a few of the old Mirage books. I have a few reprints. The turtle's faces are so distinct I never noticed that smile Michelangelo gave. It got easier to read their face expressions as the drawing style advanced. The personalities really do come through with the dialogue. Since the book is black and white and the turtles don't have their colors you really do have to pay attention to visual cues like weapons. You can't passively read those books.
@AlphaProto I liked the amature art style in the less distinct with the beaks and cloth sash style they looked like turtles by proportions the muscular circular heads with the flat carapace wasn't my cup of tea as the art evolved I didn't like the string nunchaku and the stylized Sai eastman was drawing copying frank Miller Sai tips that were slanted edge than double edge tip
@@shamusomalley4263 the first graphic novel publishings had most of the mirage comics main story reprinted book 1 had issue 1 2 3 raphael mirco series colorized with a short story or a pinup same with book 2 that had the t.c.r.i utrom triceraton saga issue 4 5 and 6 book 3 had shredder returns and the start of casey Massachusetts farm saga and book 4 was the cerebus tmnt cross over that were colorized in colored reprints sold in retail and comic shops and they had a non colorized collection and guest era collection with A.C. Farley covers and to get a hold of mirage comics tmnt books was you had to send order in the mail, go to comic conventions, or comic shop long boxes in your local state you could pirate them on the original tmnt website in the mid 90s -2010s before nickelodeon bought the rights or comic book pirate websites and today you could buy the ultimate collection 1- 6 or the omnibus featuring the fugitoid comic prequel to issue 4 5 & 6 t.c.r.i. space opera saga

I remember in my ultimate collection volume 1, in the commentary, Eastman and Laird were debating if Donnie or Raph would be the tech head. Glad they went this route. And in every incarnation, I see Mikey as the Heart of the Turtles as well as the party dude.

@@Phantom-Shadow567 I haven't watched it myself, but from what I've heard Rise was pretty good for what it was. Yeah, it made some strange changes to the formula a lot of people weren't happy with but it's nothing that can't be undone. I'll have to check it out myself to make a solid take on it though.

The mirage comics touched on subject matter of the fall out with the turtles killing shredder a second time during city at war and raphael stabbed a foot recurit kid who had no idea what he was getting himself into, who was sucked into the life of crime like his father joining the foot and that boy knowing april working at a coffee shop she drank from not knowing her relationship with the turtles and that boy sent home in a body bag by the foot not caring about their members only showing their loyalty to their master orroku saki
@latviandragon2718 the tmnt murdered the purple dragon gang in issue 1 splinter selfishly trained them to fight his battle and vendetta against orroku saki to avenge his owners deaths and didn't have the desceny to show up because he's a rat who outlived way over the life expectancy of a normal rat and contributed to the cycle of revenge by killing a man who wrongfully lost his incel domestic abusive brother orroku nagi to his own jealousy and bitterness towards yoshi for winning over his crush for tang shen and orroku saki through foot dark magics and science was resurrected to get his revenge on the turtles which april and casey got dragged into the cross fire or the turtles cycle of revenge which left open a power vacuum after the turtles slain shredder for a second time led to chaos which initially they wanted to not get involved after shredder was assumed permanently laid to rest until he resurrected a third and fourth time as a shark mutant who was killed by casey

As much as I love the 1987 series, I think the show actually kind of took away from the Turtles' original personas. Case in point-the '87 Raph never had violent urges, but was instead, more of a sarcastic guy who was a tad impatient. I can't ever see '87 Raph wanting to slice anyone up. However, given the fact that show was aimed at a younger audience, it make sense they went with some changes and they did well.
Another reason that people think the '87 cartoon gave them personalities is because head writer David Wise told them that in interviews, saying things like, "I didn't create the Turtles, just everything about them that made them popular." It's been a while since I've seen it, but didn't Splinter tell Michaelangelo he needed to control his anger in the first episode, then his anger issues were never mentioned again?

Most casuals only read TMNT #1 and get wrong ideas about the Mirage comics like the Turtles having no personalities.
Not out fault that #1 has been reprinted 200 times and the rest.... not so much.

Though it's not always seen as Mirage cannon, the RPG books 📚 also focus on the Turtles personalities, and also physical differences in 1985.
One fun example is that it said that Donatello is the tallest way before the 2012 Nicktoon did.
