      Exactly. It isn't full on goofy like some people make it out to be. Just like the 80's cartoon, it has serious moments and can be taken seriously.
      That's what annoyed me about the CG Nickelodeon TMNT when they had cross overs with the original 80's Turtles and exaggerated them. They made them out to be full on goofy, making the 80's cartoon itself look incompetent. Absolutely disrespectful. If it wasn't for the success of the original cartoon, they probably wouldn't have made other shows based on the comic.

    By far the best TMNT movie. The effects are outstanding, allowing so much emotion and life to the characters, and all practical. Add to that the darker tone, and the great stunt work, and it's like the book characters just came to life on the screen. You can do whatever you want with digital effects and it doesn't hold a candle to seeing physical turtles (and Shredder) come to life.

    A bit of a twist on Henson's perceptions; according to Brian Jay Jones who wrote the most recent Jim Henson biography, Henson wasn't a fan of the comics, but thought the idea was a good project for his "Creature Shop" (who had taken a hit financially due to LABYRINTH's failure).
    The first TMNT movie actually premiered a month before Henson passed away and apparently, he got a kick out of seeing the huge lines waiting to see it saying, "Guess they liked it." It was the last success he ever saw, as THE WITCHES was an unpleasant experience. Author Roald Dahl was constantly sending complaints to Henson about the inaccuracies of the film from his novel (and apparently, Dahl himself even picketed his protests at the premiere).

    • @RyanofAndor

I always thought he got the short end of the stick. Made up for it, in the end, I would say. Anywho: nice work, Minty. This movie enabled my first ever day of off-site school skipping. I was in 7th grade and went to the morning matinee showing of TMNT after calling myself in sick. 13yrs old. Not bad. I still have all of my original TMNT comics from the 80s and early 90s. That time April O'Neil was recast and none of us noticed.
    Also, if you were a kid in the 90's, it wasn't EVER "TMNT". It was "Turtles", we watched Yurtles, we played Yurtles on the playground (I was always Raf), we had Turtles themed birthday parties and Valentines and lunchboxes. It was turtles!

    • @KasumiKenshirou
      @KasumiKenshirou 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      No, I noticed the recasting and other kids definitely noticed, too. I used to get a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles magazine, which had a letters column. One of the kids wrote that he liked the new April actress better because the old one had a "squeezed up nose". I only remember that decades later because I thought it was weird: not only that the kid wrote this, but that the magazine printed it.
      Also, you accidentally wrote "Yurtles" several times. And it's "Raph", not "Raf".

As of May 2024, I’ve still got each of the two tapes my dad got of those films from that rental place. There’s no way I couldn’t click on this review of TMNT. The unedited version was released on DVD in 2004 in the UK. Furthermore, the German dubbing audio track contains several "cartoon-like" sounds in order to soften the violence of the fight scenes. Although the German dub of the film was released with unedited pictures on DVD, the German dub audio version with the cartoonish sounds were still kept, because they were permanently merged into the German voice-dubbing audio.

    The dark tone was more in line with the original black and white comics, which were written for adults... and is a tone which I actually prefer over the zaniness of the kids cartoon (of which I was a huge fan)... even though I was 10 when the movie released... but I didn't mind Krang and the Technodrome not being there... I liked the movie being more grounded in reality, I really liked the addition of Tatsu, and I love the gritty aesthetic.
    Not to mention that I was born and raised in NY... so it spoke to me on several different levels.
    I also prefer the original comics version of the Oroku Saki/Hamato Yoshi origin story... the one they used in the movie.
