they didn't even do that, the boost particles that fill the gauge are still broken since they play at 720p without scaling and don't actually reach the boost gauge (this is a problem in the original version too when played at any resolution higher than 720p)

@@AltonB.6776The game will be on the switch, so it's very likely that the switch would hold it back the way it did with Frontiers.
To add, I doubt they even have/use the old Generations engine anymore, which is why the Shadow Generations aspect seems to use the Frontiers gameplay, and that would also explain why Forces engine itself seemed worse. They can't improve upon the engine without entirely remaking it.
They did add the drop dash, but in generations there's not really a use for Sonic to have spin dash, and it would take away from the difference in classic Sonic's gameplay. Aside from that he doesn't really have any abilities they could add for generations stages that he didn't have at the time. Classic Sonic has the drop dash, his only new ability.
The best they could've done imo was maybe add Tails to assist you like he would in Sonic 2, since Tails is with Sonic essentially the entire time after Green Hill Zone

I'm no modder but I am someone who are really familiar with Sonic 3d models, I do renders of them.
and while Sonic Gens "remaster" dosen't have any huge differences, I can say that it DOES have some if you look closely.
for example, the colors look so much brigther now, I honestly didn't liked how original gens looked at all, I've always thought it looked really "gray" in some way, but the remaster does look like it makes the colors brigther, I'd say they put a filter of more exposition, since in some parts, I did noticed some shadows are way more darker than before, so yeah, I can say there is a graphical difference but it's a little subtle if you don't pay close attention.
so maybe they did remastered it but not that much, I'd love to see a graphical encancement, specially for the cutscenes, but eh, it still looks good, I'd say even better than og generations

I see a lot of people commenting stuff like this so I feel like breaking down a few things that should be understood.
    1) "The graphics do look better, the shadows are more defined and the colors are richer."
What you're likely seeing is the result of Generations being on better hardware and making use of HDR which naturally has allowed colors in media to look more vibrant and in the case of dark detail really makes a difference in having it pop. It naturally looks cleaner because aside from PC and Xbox One/Series S and X backwards compatibility? Sonic Generations on PS3 and 360 ran at a resolution of I believe 720p at 30fps (PS3 apparently was 1080p but that's one system and it still was locked to 30fps). It's to be expected that it looks clearer and cleaner but that's not the same as remastering a game which brings me to my next point.
    2) "It's a remaster, not a remake."
I see this point being thrown around and I feel while this is accurate, it also kind of misses what a remaster is. To remaster something is to improve the quality and if you advertise it as a remaster? It means that while the expectations should not be on it being rebuilt from the ground-up, there's still the expectation of improvements. People have commonly compared this to 3D World's rerelease on the Switch and I feel in particular that's a good point to bring up because while some sites use the "remastered" wording, most of Nintendo's marketing from what I recall didn't really call it a remaster, they noted it had additional features but otherwise put their focus on Bowser's Fury, not so subtly indicating this is kind of just them rereleasing a game on the more successful console with new material and improvements to accommodate for the lack of certain features of the system. For another example? There's the God of War HD Collection. Now the games on PS3 did see a boost with upped framerates, better widescreen support and updated textures and clarity but the people at Sony made it clear these are not remastered but rather enhanced ports. Sonic Adventure DX setting aside technical problems is a remaster. It has the visuals somewhat overhauled, the framerate's improved and there's the extra content. Sure if we're talking the most basic definitions then Generations is indeed "remastered" but to me if that's the case I might as well call any emulated game a remaster because it looks cleaner. People know how to temper expectations for a remaster when it's accurately presented. It's what makes something like Colors Ultimate embarrassing because the bare minimum people expected was Colors with a resolution and FPS boost and some bonus content but then the game released kind of broken and with clear corner cutting thanks to rushed development. Now to be fair, Generations still looks good which is likely why it just being cleaner is fine with people and that's totally understandable but when you promise a remaster? That's kind of a problem, especially when you compare the Shadow content to Generations and see how much better it looks and for the record, I don't think it really matters that they're running off two engines. I mean modders have shown how just enabling Unleashed's lighting and shaders can make a world of difference.
Now if you look at all that and go "Okay but I still like it and I'm pre-ordering?" then by all means do so. This isn't about trying to tell you that decision is stupid or anything like that. If you've justified the purchase then you've justified it. This is about pointing out that SEGA is advertising it to be this one thing when it isn't and while we are a couple months out from its full release? It doesn't really look that great to be four or five months out, marketed as a remaster and still not have anything changed about it. And again, let me remphasize this, this is not me telling you that you are a stupid person for pre-ordering or desiring to buy this. Trying to make any sort of argument to counter these claims is pointless since your purchase is your purchase. If you feel honest-to-Chaos looking at this that this is enough of a upgrade and are satisfied? That's awesome, I more than accept that take.

Well good point, people don't really have a problem with Bowser's Fury because the point of the game was to bring 3D World to Switch and take the opportunity to add more content.
If they advertised this as more of a port than a remaster then this would be way more acceptable. After all, it's not "Sonic Generations HD Remaster", it's "Sonic x Shadow Generations".
Although I have to say, I personally didn't ever see SEGA themselves using the word "remaster" to describe Sonic x Shadow Generations, but I do see in the video they advertise "enhanced visuals".

I also had the same feelings that the Sonic Generations portion wasn't really "remastered". But based on what we've seen (look at how Sonic controls, looks visually, the rings not having the silly Sonic Forces-onward animation), I get the feeling that Sonic Generations and "Shadow Generations" are using two separate versions of Hedgehog Engine, where Sonic Generations is using something closer to Hedgehog Engine 1 and Shadow Generations is using something closer to Hedgehog Engine 2 (which I believe Sonic Forces and Sonic Frontiers use, although Frontiers could be using a further-enhanced version). Sonic Colors used a modification of the Godot Engine I believe.
That isn't justifying this "remaster" fiasco at all, SEGA shouldn't be inferring that is a remaster and you are absolutely correct imo, at least from what we've seen of the game. And I'm also not saying Sonic Generations should use the same engine as Shadow Generations, that would make it play entirely differently and it would become more than a remaster at that point as level design would need updated etc.
There are probably _some_ limitations with the Sonic Generations engine, but SEGA could've absolutely done more.
In short, I agree with your points that this is not a remaster. And part of the reason for the laziness, and part of the reason for the stark contrast in visual fidelity between the two games, is probably because they're using two different engines.
If I wanted to be an optimist, I would say this is SEGA testing the waters for running Hedgehog Engine 1 on newer consoles and optimised for newer PC hardware (Sonic X Shadow Generations could be 64bit, I believe Sonic Generations is 32bit) in preparation for Sonic Unleashed (which was the debut Hedgehog Engine title). But I feel like SEGA just didn't bother doing anything with Sonic Generations because the engine appears to be visually mostly untouched.
And fwiw my stake in this is on the PC side, so indeed the visuals here look pretty much identical to the Steam release.

"enhanced visuals" is a resolution bump from the PS3/360 releases. Going from 720p to 4K (or 1080p in the case of the Switch, PS4 and Xbox One) is by all accounts, a "visual enhancement". So you can't really say "false advertisement". Like you said, Generations didn't need anything more than a resolution bump. And you got that. PC players aren't the only people playing Generations, and quite frankly, as much as they've kept Generations alive, they also don't even account for a quarter of the sales of the game.
Even then, there are some more enhanced visuals in the HUD, some textures, and some of the ambient occlusion settings (something that wasn't even in the original game).
It's not a lot, but there are definitely small improvements to the game visually. Is it enough to sell the package on it's own? Not at all. Which is why they didn't.

Personally, I thought the game was ahead of it's time when it originally released on older hardware. I thought the game looked beautiful graphically back then and I don't think it really needed much improvement, but that's just my opinion. I'm actually in awe of the animation that Shadow has in his story. The cinematics, the cutscenes, everything. They really took their time and added some really amazing animations in places that it didn't matter, but definitely adds just that little bit more detail and I love it. The follow-through after that power kick was so good and then Shadow falling back into the road and stumbling into a roll back onto his feet is absolutely 😚🤌 chefs kiss. And Shadow looks extremely detailed. You can see his quills and even where the red quills part from the black. It's so good. I still think Sonic running through white space seems very lifeless and stiff. The way he just runs and comes to a stop and just stands there is very awkward to me, but this notion of "Sonic fans aren't allowed to criticize sonic games because game development hard" is absolutely toxic and we need to stop it. Everyone is entitled to form their own opinion and discuss the things they dislike as much as the things they like about a game. As long we are all enjoying the game for what it is, who cares. You'll notice that despite the criticisms people have, no one is saying they hate the game or that it's a bad game. The general census is highly positive and we should be allowed to discuss the few nitpicks we have. We should be grateful that Sonic Team are one of the few devs that actually listen to us and use our feedback to improve whereas other game devs say "how dare you say our game is bad or broken. We worked hard on it and there's nothing we would ever change about it"

Nintendo and Sega. One usually puts lots of effort into their own games but hates when fans do anything interesting with them, and the other puts very little effort into their own games and lets the fans do all the work. Pick your poison.

I think the main reason they’re calling it a remaster is because it’s in hedgehog engine two, which has real time calculated lighting. Hedgehog engine one only had baked lighting. There’s a really good video called how hedgehog engine engine actually works, and it shows all of this. but I’m just speculating. maybe only the shadow part is hedgehog engine 2

    Game dev here,
It's insanely easy to bump the resolution of textures and materials (normal maps etc.).
The hardest part is only if you don't have the source textures/materials and have to recreate them (which Sega/Sonic Team would have the textures on hand).
Even then that would be the bare minimum to call it a remaster.

Considering Shadow Generations is using an entirely different game engine from the original Sonic Generations, I assume that there will just be 2 different EXEs, 2 different file structures, etc. So, it would have been really nice to just be able to purchase Shadow Generations as its own thing on Steam. I'm not thrilled about buying literally the same game but with the Drop Dash modded in (which I can get from actual modders anyhow).

I have a handful of issues with this release. One, I already have Generations (and love it) on PC, so I don't want to buy Generations again just to play the new Shadow segment. Two, what you mentioned in the video about not being a remaster. Three, it looks like the gameplay might be a little underwhelming (the boss fights looked kind of bland and empty). I'm more than willing to change my mind on this game if it ends up good but I don't think I should be labeled as wrong for having concerns over a franchise I adore

Honestly since the original style of Unleashed was to be based off of the renders, the only thing I think they would need to add to make the game look better is Ambient Occlusion (The soft shadowing in corners), as I tried Gens with Reshade AO and it made a really big difference. Also maybe some Subsurface Scattering so light can go through skin nicely, and full on PBR (This game was made before Metallic maps existed in games so there were only really Diffuse, Normal, and Specular maps)

I think its clear that SEGA is mainly trying to draw attention to the Shadow portion and not the standard Generations section, but I'm honestly a bit worried after Forces, yes I know Frontiers helped get the characters back on track, but this is going to be the first big title to use Shadow and possibly the rest of team dark since Forces, and we all know the hot garbage they were in that game. The gameplay looks good and everything for the Shadow portion, but I'm still a bit cautious after how they used Shadow in Forces.

since I bought the original on Steam when it came out so long ago, I'm okay with it being largely untouched because of just how long the modding scene has been able to flex their skills and creativity with the game. Without a big engine update, those mods won't end up getting broken, so stuff like the Unleashed levels, updates to Classic Sonic's moveset, and countless others can still be experienced by PC gamers no matter if they bought the original (which is getting delisted) or not.

Glad to see that I am not the only one seeing it this way lol.
I've always have had a bad feeling regarding SonicXShadow Generations and quite frankly, this even confirms it even more.
I also would like to mention that they also took down the Sonic Generations Standalone on steam and put it in a bundle with Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Sonic 4 EP 1 & 2, Sonic Spinball and Sonic 3D Blast where all I am thinking is "... but why..?".
And I am sorry but... this doesn't even look like a "Nintendo Move" as many said. Nintendo ported Super Mario 3D World + added Bowsers Fury to it, sure but NEVER have they said that it's a remaster. SEGA advertized it as a remaster from the get-go, promised us improved visuals etc., and all I am seeing are not improved visuals, but just the same game ported from PS3 to PS4/PS5 or Xbox 360 to Xbox One/Series S/X. And they want us to pay 49.99$ for it or pay 59.99$ for the deluxe edition for a few extra bonuses + being able to play the game before release...? Way too overprized for what it is now.
I am afraid that might just be another Sonic Colors, if not a Sonic Forces type of situation :/
Again, it's not to dump hate on the so called "Remaster". It's pointing out the obvious.

Returning to mention another thing that I saw multiple times today:
SEGA has censored the hell out of this game and that for no reason. Sonic Generations had nothing that had to be censored and I am currently just asking myself "What the everliving hell was there to censor in a game in a USK 6 Game?!" (going off of the local age rating where I live btw)
      I wouldn't call it a remaster.. more of a demaster :|

The only thing I really wanted from a Generations "remaster" is more, newer sonic levels (Windy Hill from Lost World, no sonic boom level ew, Studiopolis from Mania, Sunset Heights from Forces, Kronos Island from Frontiers, and Speed Jungle from Superstars, and I guess i could throw in Scrambled Shores from Dream Team if we're keeping the rule of 3 levels in 1 era, for the bosses it could be one of the Deadly Six or Infinite to cover the first three levels; probably Infinite since both Mania and Forces use the phantom ruby, and Giganto or one of the other bosses from Frontiers for the next three levels)

  • @CyberBinary
    @CyberBinary 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think the most I’d want out of a Sonic Generations remaster is higher resolution textures. Even then, I’m not sure it would be noticeable given the speed with which you pass them by. I wouldn’t want them to change things like lighting or effects since they feel so intentionally designed in the original release.

  • @LtMew

While it's a little disappointing they didn't fully remaster the game i'm still more than ok with a port that has extra story content. I was fortunate enough to play Generations on PC but there's probably tons of Sonic fans who only got to experience the game on the 360/PS3. Having the game on more modern hardware will finally allow those people who missed out playing the game on PC to have a chance to play it at 60fps and hopefully will make it easier for new fans to give the game a try. The Switch version alone makes this game worth it IMO, having a portable version of Generations is gonna be amazing.

I 100% agree. I love shadow generations, but the fact that there are practically no QOL changes (such as the air boost being dependent on player input rather then where sonic is facing) and the game looking the game. I bought the original sonic generations specifically to compare the 2 graphically but massively dissapointed by the lack of change. but, if its the reason why shadow generations is so good then i don't mind at all

  • @shadowsenpai2395

I think how this is working is you are getting shadow generations which is a brand new game at this point it seems. And you are getting sonic generations attached to it with maybe a couple new bells and whistles.

a remaster doesn't exactly mean replacing or trying to improve on original assets, it could be making better use of what was originally present, think musical remasters that use all the original tracks with better mixing or without quality loss, though for video games defining a remaster is so vague, and nobody is sold on a 3d game at a higher resolution being a remaster. i imagine they fixed some bugs or just arbitrarily increased shadow resolutions or something, but that still doesnt feel like it does enough to replace or argue it's place along the original release at all.

  • @etherealhatred

to be completely honest i personally don't care, the art style and approach of Gens is Unleashed meets other Sonic games and that just makes it for me, while I under your point and i actually agree, i think improving at least the illumination would've been enough (which yes, suffered a huge downgrade from unleashed when they noticed they were demanding TOO MUCH to the Hedgehog Engine that even made the fps die)
But personally, I don't mind it too much

  • @yukiokoito
    @yukiokoito 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

The moment i saw the title of the video I was confused because I'm not sure if ya'll understand this but sonic x shadows generation is a remaster collection of old maps from sonic heroes, sonic adventure, and sonic 2006 from what they showed us on footage, not a remaster of sonic generations so I would say you don't look at the game from the correct perspective
But I do agree graphically. Nothing much changed, and the game looks like a dlc for the old game, we don't have the game yet so we can't really judge before we play it ourselves
