Adani Ports’ Deepwater Transshipment Facility Vizhinjam Port Receives Its First Mothership

The country’s first deep-water transshipment facility Vizhinjam Port near Kovalam Beach in Kerala received its first mothership on July 11. The facility operated by Adani Ports welcomed ‘San Fernando’, a vessel of the world’s second-largest shipping company Maersk, with over 2,000 containers on it creating history. Until now, India did not have a dedicated transhipment port, resulting in three-fourths of India's transshipped cargo being handled by ports outside India. Vizhinjam will facilitate the movement of transhipment traffic into India and handle traffic along major routes connecting India. This includes the traffic between the Indian subcontinent and the US, Europe, Africa, and East Asia.

Kerala gov contribution 5500 cr for this project, adani contribution 2500, and central gov gave 800. Total budget of around 9000cr for now seeing 1st phase. Phase 2,3,4 are yet to be constructed by 2028-2029 deadline. This port has a natural birth depth of 20 metrs which no other ports in india have which can easily bring in the worlds biggest motherships like MSC IRINA etc. This port also stands in a strategical point of just 10 notical miles from international shipping route which will help reduce whole indias logistics cost and boost our economy.( China owning one of the ports in colombo - srilanka tells the importance of this port in future geopolitical conflicts)

Central government provided only less than 10% of the fund. More than 60% is by the Government of Kerala. Nearly 30% is by Adani. You should thank Government of Kerala and Adani. Central Government did basically next to nothing.
