I've done my fair share of roofing. We had an old hospital in my home town that was being converted to an apartment block. There was 3 stories and it was early spring. My boss got to the site early and set up the ladders on the second story flat roof. I made my way out and remember him telling me that if I fall I was fired before I hit the ground. Literally 20 seconds later I find myself falling. What happened was the dew produced a bit of frost on the roof and as I went for the final step up the board holding the ladder gave out because of a rotting board I belly flopped on the roof and the ladder slid down resting on the siding just out of reach of my feet. As I said down the roof two nails just so happens to be at the edge and hooked me on 5he inside of both elbows. So there 8 am hanging by terrorist ass nails and as I looked for something to grab my skin ripped. This caused me to fall backwards and my ass went through a set of rungs. All I hear is I told you your fired as the ladder slides down the siding then off the second story flat roof taking me down to the ground. I picked myself up looked over my wounds and said I'm taking lunch. Lol. I still have two identical scars on the inside of each elbow. I just wonder how it would have turned out if those two nails hadn't been missed. I would have went down a lot faster and more than likely not been typing this. At least in an understandable fashion. But I still miss those days.

I’m 18 years old let me give you advice how to do a 12/12 the fast way and the right way everyone has their own style of working this is my PERSONAL OPINION. I use a mountain harness I really recommend it helps you maneuver yourself better... when I’m tearing off I take out or renail the nails while I take off part of the shingles. I only renail if the paper has staples because the paper will pull down and rip with your weight. Once I finish tearing off I don’t have to nail the nails back in or take them out so I just felt the first 2 lines using the ladder with 1 inch nail caps. My first chalk line is 17 1/2 then my second 45 after that you should be good nail the first 4 lines all the way down with your starter. After that put your jack and 2x4 or 2x6 I prefer 2x6 way much better more balance. After u put ur jacks nail your shingles until you see the line on top of the felt and felt another 2 lines and work your way all the way up. In my opinion this is how I finish fast and easy. I’m in Texas so I 4 nail in other hurricane states and windy states I recommend you 6 nail or even 8 nail your shingles. If you use this method and have a fast pace and good work quality I promise you will nail 10 sq in a 12/12 In 2hrs. Remember you nailing 8 nails fast doesn’t mean you’re fast you putting the shingle how it supposed to be is what speed is! Learn how that shingle is supposed to land put 4 quick right nails and let’s goo
I have done many jobs by myself and I never thought of it as being an issue except it can take much longer then having help,Now I can see what the property owner means when I see someone else struggling to get it done. I always thought it was ok and when I got finished I wouldn't have to pay anyone else, but all the time I spent working to get it done takes a lot of effort and doesnt really pay off,it will certainly wear you down in the long run.
