This is a phenomenal 3 part series and the best roofing how-to I've found. Watched all 3 parts from start to finish multiple times, picking up new things each time. Seeing you align the shingles into place for the correct overlap using the tip of the nail gun was genius. Big thanks to you guys for putting this together. I used a hook blade on my Dewalt oscillator and it made cutting the starter shingles and trimming the edges of the roof a piece of cake. I also cut two pieces of premeasured plywood (8" and 16") so I didn't have to do any thinking and the plywood made an excellent straight edge guide when cutting them with the oscillator. I also ended up snapping lines every 2nd row as I found it easier for a newbie to have more lines to reference and have that "reset" more frequently than every 5 rows.

Safety tip from a former young roofer... Always cut away from your other hand. I had my hook blade in my right hand slip into the underside of my left wrist. Didn't cut any tendons, but I could see one. 😩 3 stitches... And yes, I know I was trained to always cut away from your body. However, sometimes when you're in a hurry, you don't always think about safety. But you aren't going to save any time with a hospital visit or by getting incapacitated. Safety first.

I appreciate your stair stepping tutorial/method. It helped me understand the process for a quick and efficient way to shingle a roof. I think the holding the knife as a gauge and placing the shingles above for reference for the next cut is genius! Anytime you don’t have to pull out a tape measure and pencil to make a cut is a huge help! Also you make two cuts and get five pieces to start that’s how to do it!!

@@johnhill9865 that’s these DEI jobs! That’s crazy that a young woman would be hired on as a project manager over a roofing job and just admits that she don’t even know how to put on the roof! That’s really pathetic and whoever put her in charge should get sued if somebody’s job is not done correctly and she signs off on it! Roofs are very expensive and can’t be taken lightly when putting them on correctly! That’s what I am doing here. I am an older lady and I am going to hire a man and I want to know how he plans to start the shingles , do the ridge caps and the vents. If it doesn’t sound correct I’m going to pull up this video and have him take a look at it because he’s originally from Florida and I’m here in Louisiana and so there’s no roof I can go and look at that he has done. Thank you guys for watching! I would like to add that I do not recommend diy roofs on your home... a garage or a shed is a little different because shingles don't usually leak in the field, they'll leak in the details (pipes, valleys, walls, flashings etc).
Oh and i also I get a lot of questions about tools on here so if you're thinking about doing a project on your own or new to the roofing game I went ahead and located some awesome tools to help you guys out and they are all cheaper on amazon than the ones I find in stores. Links are in the description! Hope you find it helpful.
Also, be sure to check out parts 1 and 2 if you haven't done so. Very important to this process. Obviously there's much more to roofing than this, so if you need help with valleys, ridge cap, ridge vent, regular vents, pipes, removing and re-installing dish satellites etc. I have all of that and plenty more to watch, here in these 2 playlists! Be sure to check them out!

This is a fantastic set of video's. Thank you very much. I started watching this video because I'm about to reroof our shed that I installed 20 years ago. This helped so much. I'm guessing you made this as a training video for your employees. Again, well done. You are very concise and a natural teacher!!

Zacks a pro, I’ve learned a lot from him but it’s tough to remember everything off the top of your head. Owens Corning recommends 6 1/2 inches for your stagger step with a minimum of 4 inches and a maximum of 8. The “5 5/8” number he’s talking about is actually the height of a shingles course line (exposed part of shingle after applicators) not being a smart Alec just clearing it up for the newbies

Love your video, very old school, the way things were done and should still be done. Watching it made feel that i was standing next to you, you talked "to me", not "at me". Growing up, my dad never hired anyone to fix stuff around the house, everyone had a friend who knew how to help. Dad was a sheet metal worker, Peter was a roofer, Ray was a plumber, Paul was an electrician and so on. My son inherited his uncle's house but it needs some work, but his generation just wants to hire a "professional". Well one roofer wanted $550Can and the other wanted $500Can per square or $25000 for the whole job. So I convinced him and his friends that $4k in material and a weekend of hard work we could do it, and we did. Now we are on to another friends roof. Thanks

This is the best shingling series I've found. Absolute beginner that decided to build a 12' x 12' shed with zero experience. I'm ready to take on that roof now. Only thing missing was installing the ridge cap. I've seen videos using 3-tab, but not architectural shingles.

Don't use architectural. You have to buy cap itself, it comes perforated and breaks apart clean. I have a TH-cam short installing it and I also have videos you can see me do it.

This was facinating to watch. I mean, 56 minutes long and I was captivated all the way to the end. I didn't realize that there were so many cuts done on those shingles to create a good pattern. All those cuts substantiate the need for a good moisture barrier underneath the shingles. Also did not realize that shingles were stair stepped. I am learning a lot valuable information from your videos. Thank you so much for sharing all of your great tips.

@@NWIVeteranConstruction Yeah thanks for the warning, but again i have done alot of DIY before that i have been warning by other people by doing my self.
It often takes longer time then you think because filming and editing, but how hard can it be follow the tips and instructs?
I have never had any problem doing that earlier when i have watching seriously people given tips and instructs. Been ordering things i needed. Phase one shingles, bottom and top and the second phase are rain gutter system going to be order soon. It's coming some bad weather "small storm" so had to wait little bit, but hopefully i will begninning pretty soon can't wait. Im pretty worry about the storm for the roof. There are few bad shingles and it need to be changed completly since it's on the second layer.

Being a retired Engineer/PM for large projects (DoD) and having remodeled most of our house over time, I have some experience with the trades. Even did several (flat) roof projects at the (Puget Sound) Shipyard - only as a PM though (review bids, negotiate, place task order, make sure my techs are visiting and safety is job 1, approve submittals, inspect, close task order). PM'd many large MILCONS as well, $100-$400M a pop (Corps of Engineers, then Navy), but I am retired now (YEAH BUDDY!) and none of that ever taught me how to shingle a roof!
You are the best, that's all I can say. Excellent narration, excellent focus on the necessary elements.
So this retired guy with an acre in a rural area is the only one without an out-building in practically the entire neighborhood. Went "simple" and ordered a 12 x 24 shed (my new workshop) from Costco. Of course, no floor or roofing are included and I'm doing it by myself. The floor was square, but then it wasn't, after too many sheets were already attached to it. You must be laughing. Yes, it transferred to the roofing sheets, as well.
I shingled just about exactly as you taught and it looks great and it's straight as an arrow, you'd never know I had to fill in for crooked sheeting beneath. Funny, I used the same, exact shingles you used in these videos (Isn't it weird how much green granules go into an "Estate Grey" shingle? I thought I got the wrong ones!) . Only difference was I used Ice & Water for all the underlayment (smaller roof) and that was friggin' hard work and I screwed that up some, too. By yourself sucks!
Sorry for the long story, but you helped me a lot and I needed to thank you! Engineering is important and every project needs a PM, but that doesn't get you a properly built workshop after you retire!! Tradespeople do the REAL WORK.
Tomorrow, I finish with the Ridge & Hip shingles on top and cut some leftover rake. I had to go get the R&H shingles today when I finally learned, from another of your videos, that I couldn't use architectural shingles cut in pieces to do that.
I have the utmost respect for you and the manner in which you have presented the information in your "for a beginner" videos. They are simply fantastic! I'm sure you have helped many, many people like me and I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart. (I only fell off the 6' ladder once, too! Yes, it hurts...) Thank You, Zack!!!!
