  • Dr. Christine Moutier (Chief Medical Officer, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) debunks myths about suicide and discusses the big risk factors associated with the act. She details her path to becoming a suicide prevention advocate and shares how her own mental health journey during medical school led her to become a safe space for others. Dr. Moutier lists the occupations with the highest risk of suicide, the suicide patterns across every demographic, and the physical, emotional, and psychological factors that increase one’s risk. Mayim opens up about her family’s experience with suicide and highlights the importance of not waiting to seek help. She and Dr. Moutier consider the elevated suicide rates among LGBTQIA+ communities, the role social media plays in cyberbullying and suicide, and the importance of combating the epidemic of loneliness with interpersonal connections. They highlight the significance of having an open dialogue within family circles and the benefits of interactive screening programs before another engaging round of You Might Need Help If...

This topic made me cry. It's like I am talking to Miss Mayim. I can imagine she's hugging me, telling I'll be alright. Life has been very difficult for me. I lost both my parents last year. These topics help me a lot.
It's true that whatever profession a person has, there are some who still needs help. Because of the stigma, it is difficult to share.
Thank you so much Miss Mayim and Mister Jonathan. I'm glad I found your podcast. Keep spreading the love and help to those who are in need. Lovelots! ❤️

It was 11 years in March that my dear brother committed suicide by hanging. I was the last to see him alive because he died in my arms. That day, I will have arrived at his place 5 minutes earlier, I might have been able to save him. I was 24 and today at 36 the trauma is still there. It was the start of my descent into hell. The day after this tragedy, I myself almost did the irreparable. After months and months of therapy, thanks to some people and my work, I am doing better despite some things still triggering violent crises.

I'm only 5min and just wanna say a huge THANK YOU - I have suicidal thoughts but I know it isn't in the suicide plan space, but the (UK) medical system really makes it difficult to be honest about this for fear of the more extreme repercussions (I've been hospitalised before) - I categorically will not express this stuff to my doctor, and I still hesitate even in a private paid counselling environment, but that hesitation and the societal strictures behind it are counterproductive

The intensity of the topic and the intelligent and warm way it was addressed in these two last episodes, having experienced one suicide in my close family has kept me exhausted, crying and broken hearted. But so thankful too for being so open and brave to break the stigma and talk about what people usually feel as a shame to be kept in secrecy.

Thank you for discussing this topic. My brother killed himself at 29. I was 20. He suffered from clinical depression for years, triggered by my father's illness (cancer) and subsequent death. I agree that the grief is different for both. He suddenly stopped taking his meds, and he went into a spiral, but he hid it so well. The hardest part about the grief for my brother, I think, is the "what ifs," - always wondering if there was something that I could've done to stop him, or something I could've said. It's guilt, basically, and it's been years now, but it never goes away.

My wife suffered from depression and was diagnosed as bipolar. She eventually committed suicide some years ago. I was shocked that it happened and shocked how people reacted to it. It was very taboo and extremely hard for those left behind after it happened. No answers and No one to turn to to help you understand what happened. I think because no one wants to talk about it. But I’m still here I took it day by day and read a lot of self help books. 😁👍

I wasn’t gonna listen to this this morning because I just wasn’t feeling in the mood for something heavy. But literally as I pushed pause my phone rang and it was my husband. Calling to tell me that a friend and an old coworker of ours (we all worked together at one time but he and I worked side by side at a shared desk for a couple years and had many laughs) committed suicide last night. This is the 4th person I have known in 6 years to commit suicide. My heart is heavy today. Deflated.

11:40 "The fourth misconception is you can talk someone out of it, meaning: you have the power to talk someone out of it. This is a really hard one. Professionals who are trained to deal with people who are suicidal are the best people who are best equipped for the most part to deal with individuals who are suicidal. This is a job for professionals. And there are many wonderful free hotlines with trained individuals who take calls around the clock [...]. Telling someone how much you love them, telling them how terrific they are, telling them that they have no reason to be suicidal - it rarely helps. That does not have the power to transform the course of someone's life who is suicidal. I'm not saying don't do those things - but also: Take it incredibly seriously if a person is expressing suicidal ideation and suicidal tendencies."

I grew up in a particular part of Toronto Canada called Bathurst Manor. It had one of the highest density when I was growing up of holocaust survivors. My uncle killed himself a week or 2 before my first plane trip over when I was a baby. He was found by my granddad hung on a tree. My dad told me it was a car accident until his best friend told me the truth when I was 18yrs old. His pastor told him that the pills were from the devil and he should trust in god to heal him, he did the deed the week after he went off his meds. My dad still has a deep hatred and resentment towards religion to this day. Not to say all religions are bad or that all religious people are bad, it's just that individual pastor who steered him the wrong way, his late wife is still a pastor for the same church, so everyone responds differently I guess.
My dad still tells me stories about him to this day and he really looked up to him. He was a very cerebral, intellectual person, very philosophical, slow and methodical, worked in a bookstore and could devour books like nobody's business and my dad was dyslexic but could outwit the best comedians, very quick with a comeback and impulsive. They were the perfect balance for each other.

admittedly i am only a few minutes in, but as a society, can we please stop further stigmatising suicide by using the expression "commited suicide".
    Suicide isnt a choice....its fatal.

That depends on if you subscribe to the empirical illusion of free will.

🎯🎯🎯 People are further stigmatized by the use of a term criminalizing it.
A lot of research has been done on this.

I think the dental suicide rate has something to do with the toxic mercury they are in close contact with.

Wow, she just blew off the legit concerns Jonathan expressed about people not feeling a sense of belonging or purpose in society. Yikes!

I get the "You're not a real doctor" thing. I have a J.D. but to a lot of people I don't have a real doctorate even though I have that credential and have spent 20 years studying in field. I think this problem is also doubly as bad when one is also a woman.
