  • Alyson Stoner (Step Up, Cheaper by the Dozen, multi-disciplinary artist, Co-Founder of Movement Genius, author of Mind Body Pride: The 7-Step Guide to Deeper Inner Connection) joins us to discuss the role physical movement plays in the promotion of mental and emotional health. She details her childhood in the entertainment industry, growing up around abuse and addiction, and how focusing on the mind-body connection serves as a grounding tool for those stressors. Alyson opens up about her experiences with using disordered eating as a coping mechanism, being disowned by her faith community for her sexuality, and her alexithymia diagnosis. She considers the therapeutic benefits she receives from dance, physical symptoms of being disconnected from one’s body, and the importance of implementing full-body awareness into therapy. Mayim breaks down the process of training the brain to achieve certain psychological and emotional responses in another installment of Ask Mayim Anything.

Maybe I’m a too much a spiritually sensitive person but, in a way, this episode remembers me a lot Wil Wheaton’s one! “Always questioning” “lots of existencial crisis” “bulimia & anorexia” “de-constructing all the facets of my life”..and the mom in me wants to hug tigh this once troubled teenager Alyson was & tell her “all will be alright”. As the mom in me feels proud of the wonderful adult she’s become! THANK YOU Mayim and Jonathan for these precious gems you deliever to us!💜

Thank you so very much to Alyson, Mayim, and Jonathan! Amazing! This is EXACTLY what I have been searching for! My daughter has unfortunately experienced serious, life-threating, chronic illness for the past 7 years, including multiple surgeries. While she has therapists, there is more work to be done. She and her emotional, mental, and physical body are shutting down. Just this weekend we were discussing somatic rehabilitation! I can hardly wait to sign her up! Thank you, thank you, thank you! What a blessing!

@@echoharbour I've been to the public mental health clinic there's in my city but they told me that they have too many patients and that they are no longer taking anyone in unless it's an extreme case (like if you can't even work bc of how bad ur feeling). It doesn't make sense since they are supposed to take everyone and they know I struggle with s*cide thoughts and the situation is bad, but they did it anyways. I'm not American so the situation it's probably different here but yeah, it sucks. I have BPD and OCD so things get really hard, i have to pay a therapist that I absolutely adore but unfortunately I can't go as much as it would be recommended.

Wonderful. So much information here; but the one thing you both may have passed on to me that I hope will help me is this: that animals experiencing trauma have a way to shake it off and complete the cycle. I think I have forgotten (probably from childhood) how to complete the cycle. I'm going to search for this! Thank you.

About what God’s related you were speaking around min.55:00, and Alyson’s Christian baggage, if you let me to recommend these books of deceased Raimond Pannikar, hinduist and Catholic bishop of Sta Barbara, Cal.: “The Experience of GOD: Icons of The Mistery” & “The Unknown Christ of Hinduism: Towards an Ecumenical Christophany” (both in Amazon). I knew him personally (uncle of a Catalan/Indian friend of mine) and shared hours, nights, days with him discussing, learning, mouth-dropped opening my mind beyond Christianity, and spiritually growing myself in sane criticism if needed, maturing to my own intimate vision. In my own “Shaking off our ancient prejudices and building the earth” (Pierre Teilhard de Chardin words..).

The "pointing finger" is the same metaphor I use to I explain my faith & thoughts on Christianity!
Except I'm looking at it a little more "specifically" in that I think Jesus was "pointing" and humanity (really, Christian religions) is focusing on His hand. (I usually compare it to sometimes when you tell a dog to go get something and, rather than looking at what you're pointing at, it just follows the end of your finger.)
I grew up Catholic and still hold a lot of love for the traditions and overall tenants of the faith -- I'll still say that that church raised me and will always be a second home. But I can't shake the feeling that it, as well as other organizations dedicated to an interpretation of something as vast as God, are "missing the point" (no pun intended) and haven't really gotten it "right" yet. Even apart from "right for me" or "what I think is 'right'" something still feels missing or misguided; not that I'd know where to begin on identifying it. That said, I don't practice anymore -- not because of any bad blood, more because I feel like me half-participating is or feeling like I have one foot out, in a way, disrespectful to those traditions and the people for whom this form is the closest way they can interpret or process their faith. If that makes sense.
I'm just excited to hear the same analogy and wanted to gush for a sec.

I'm gonna b honest Mayim, I love ur podcast but as a lower middle class women who struggles with my mental health and struggles to live alone and have an apartment and support myself. I cannot stand hearing everyone in the world promote these therapy apps and services. I've looked into them before because I've personally been struggling a lot and it's still so expensive. I can't pay $300+ a month for therapy, most people can't and every damn commercial I hear is for better help or talkspace and makes it seem so accessible and easy to people. And the honest truth is it's still not affordable! And this is incredibly triggering to keep having these services thrown in my face as if it's easy and be reminded of my issues and how I can't afford to get help for them at every turn. It's like these companies are capitalizing on the mental health crisis and it fucking hurts honestly.
