- In this video we take a closer look at the gameplay of Paper Mario: The Origami King, especially the battle with the Scissors boss and the combat system with edited HP values. In the full game, Paper Mario: The Origami King, there are plenty of interesting things to explore, and this is a question I wanted to dive into. What happens in Paper Mario: The Origami King during the Scissors fight if we boost Mario's HP as high as possible by editing the game's save data? Can Mario survive the 999 damage attack from the Scissors boss? What happens as we increase Mario's HP in Paper Mario: The Origami King? We examine all of these questions and more!

That's right! You end up doing 1 extra damage for every ~13 total HP you gain!

Yeah, that was so strange! It turns out that if you survive the scissors attack, it plays the animation of Mario jumping, even if you don't jump!

Great question! In my last video (What happens in Paper Mario: The Origami King if we CLONE PARTNERS?), I was looking at what happens if we edit the game's save data to have different partners, and having the Sombrero guy as a partner is an option. Maybe he was originally planned as a temporary follower, like spike/ the bone goomba!

6:05 damn I finally found the answer to a question I wondered since July 2020.
Kinda impressed that the battle still goes on, apart from the automatic Mario jump everything worked as normal.
I wonder if the developers considered this as an option or, since you technically can't figth it with so much HP they didn't think about it, even if I thought that it was going to be an instant death in any case.

I think what happens is that the game checks to see if Mario's jump timing is within the needed time to dodge the attack. If his timing is just about right, the Scissors does no damage and the mid-jump animation is shown. If his timing isn't correct, Scissors deals 999 damage, which is way over the normal amount of HP Mario would've had at that point. Since the game sees that Mario died, it plays the cutting animation instead. Since Mario has over 999 HP, he has enough health left over to survive and the game "assumes" that Mario jumped over the blade since he survived and plays the jumping animation, but since Mario didn't jump in between the right frames, he still takes damage. Basically, the game uses different animations based off of whether Mario survives or... he doesn't.

I think that it added the HP after you got hit, thats why you had 35 HP after hit and not 26.

When I first thought about this, I thought that the animation for slicing up mario would still play, but would then give you an invisible Mario.

It's cool how the game knows that you've tampered with your save file. Nintendo probably did this to prevent hacking.

How many hole punch holes can Mario have with 990 HP?
Can Mario with 990 +35 HP survive King Olly's scissors attack? Can he survive attacks that do not have damage numbers such as Thwomps, Chain Chomp, the cannon at Shy Guys Finish Last, or the purple fog during the final boss?
That's a great question! I'm guessing any attacks that are automatic game-overs won't be prevented with a higher HP, and I'll do some experimenting! Thanks for the comment!
It is not really an "invisible" boost, but a boost that is calculated in 2 ways: One is external visually (Your HP you see all time in the corner) and the other one is a state in the gamefiles you have no way of seeing when you play other than using a debugger. The external value is capped at 999 since there is simply no 4th digit to represent a value of 1000 or more. The internal value however does not share this cap.
I even be bold here and say Marios internal HP cap lies at 65535 HP (65536-1 since 0 HP are a value as well and negative numbers are not taken into account since you stop at 0=ded)
This is the 16bit integer cap which could be a possible value register in the gamefiles. If the register is a 32bit one, Marios possible max HP would be 2147483646 (again 2147483647-1)
_Do this take again, but this time, find out what integer is used. Crank up your HP accordingly and watch Mario getting dealt absolutely "no" damage on the Scissors_
Edit: Although I know how the HP max is calculated, I have NO idea what makes max HP drop down to 990 in a fight

In the Fairy tail for the Nintendo Switch, the game does not let get over 30,000 damage in combat until Chapter 4 Day 4 of the games. I successfully got over 30,000 damage in day 1, 2,and 3 of the games; all that happens is that the game puts in the total damage amount at the end of the battle to around 29,994 damage total or something similar to that. The 30,000 damage barriers do not break at that point in the game if the amount of damage is caused, because of that in game limitation. However, there is also ways to increase total attack power which I never tried at all to see if the game would reset the total damage counter at the end of the encounter.

I believe that if the game reads like this:
if you are still alive while scissors uses Final Cut, you must have jumped and survived

Huh, so the jump must be apart of the scissors animation when you survive.
Hold up. You survived with 35HP. The gold heart gives you an extra 35HP. If you had 990+35HP, then you *should* have been left at 26HP, not 35. As such, we can tell that you do actually have 999HP, with the extra 35 added, and battles simply don't display it past 990 for some reason.
I did some more experimenting that might interest you, here's something that wasn't included in the video:
I entered a random battle with 999 HP, and my HP dropped to 990/990. It stayed at 990/990 after leaving the battle. I took damage repeatedly from spikes/ fire and I wondered if I'd still be alive at 0 HP or if I had any HP that wasn't being shown. When I got to 0 HP, I died, there wasn't any extra HP outside of the battle.

Finnally someone did it, I don't know why, but I wanted someone that try this, also, the game just has a visual limit of 990hp, but internally, the game know you have more hp then that. Still suprised tho, cause these type of limit was in old games and more recent game just do it and show the big number anyway or the number limit is not only visual...
Edit : Just realise, I'm suprised the game didn't softlock when you survived jumping on the scissors, I except a softlock since there is no animation of mario surviving when he jump on it

The HP behaves pretty strangely: your HP remains at 990 after you leave a battle, and you die after taking 990 damage, even if don't take any damage in the battle!

you died the first time because it hit you with 999 damage leaving you at exactly 0 hp
thats why you are left with 35hp with the battle accesory only leaving you with the life that the battle accesory gave you

I also had a wonder about the game. When fighting a boss you can hit the panel with the “+1” on it to get 2 moves. But, if you use say a hammer with one durability and use it for both turns I wonder what would happen. I saw you liked to test this stuff out, for example killing bosses with the pow block!

And that's a really good question! If I remember correctly, if you select the same weapon for both turns and it breaks in the first turn, then in the second turn you can't attack and it says the weapon broke

King Olly in his final form has an attack similar to the final cut that also does 999 damage. Would Mario be able to survive that attack?
I haven't tested that one yet, but I'm assuming it works exactly the same way as the scissors boss attack here :) I'll have to test it though, thank you for bringing it to my attention!

I tried the same thing, I was curious to see if it would work :) The game primed us into thinking that iron boots protect you from spiky foes and that it might also work on the scissors boss
its visually because he survived the 999 damage attack with guard plus since the max health is 999 he will die if he gets hit with a 999 damage attack
If I had to guess, the game doesnt know what to do if Mario survives the attack, so it instead plays the animation of him jumping

Not quite. I've seen ProfisiaGaming's fight against the Origami King, and he started with 215 HP, so you might be wrong on that.
Also, if anyone wants to try to make a Kaizo Origami King Mod (by editing the enemies, but *NOT* Mario's stats), lemme know. I have ideas for the Kaizo bosses (but I sadly don't know how to code).

Yeah, exactly, Mario's HP can normally reach a maximum of 200, but it can go slightly higher if you use battle accessories :)

Yeah, this was really surprising to me, it was a fun journey! Love exploring this kind of stuff :) Those partners can be surprisingly unlocked by editing the game's save data! Maybe the Sombrero Guy was planned as a temporary partner like Spike and the Bone Goomba!

@@hannahwootton2258 zSupremeoz wrote a program in C# that you can use to edit the game's save data and it recalculates the CRC32B hash which prevents the save file from being corrupted/ resetting when you edit it (but you should still make backups)

I mean, no need to overdramatize it. His HP is 1,020. Game can't show four digit health values, but internally that's what it is.
(Also for some reason, the gold heart plus gives +35 in some instances, so there his HP is 1,025. Or maybe it's 1,029 and 1,034 respectively, but you get the point.)
