While I was getting the 'Transmission Received' achievement, I actually learned that Chamber 14 will trigger the 'door explodes' prevention if you throw the radio through the door. So either they only accounted for this one instance for some reason, or that prevention is just triggered by any physics object landing in that area.
My copy of portal on Orange box doesn't have the radios or the updated/retconned final cutscene where party escort bot drags you back into the facility :/
As a game developer it's uniquely frustrating but also relatable as to how over HALF of these softlocks could've been avoided if they simply extended trigger areas to encompass an entire room rather than an arbitrarily smaller space...
@@jamestonjes8263 Oh totally, I'm just talking about things like there being a gap between the cube and the fizzler in the exit hallways of certain chambers, it's just so strange to go the extra mile to add in that softlock protection, but then have a gap for seemingly no reason! @@arrowtongue i think it's very likely that, beyond some of the softlocks very much requiring the player to go out of their way to do them, some of the less than stellar anti-softlock triggers could be explained by potential older designs of the maps, like with the companion cube chamber example
37:26 Funny story about this cube, The function that creates a new cube doesn't have a function to delete the old one, so if you send this cube out of bounds, it'll rapidly spawn hundreds of thousands of cubes in the pipe and they rapidly launch out of the pipe like an explosion. your game will crash.
My favorite Softlock prevention in the game is the one at 25:03 because, instead of just opening the doors, they instead made this entirely unique 'escape hatch'. Also, I learned on my own that, in Chamber 14, the 'door explodes' prevention at 23:45 also triggers if you throw the chamber's radio through the door; no cube required (I learned this while I was getting the 'Transmission Recieved' achievement).

its interesting to see the difference in how different gaming communities define softlock and hardlock. or more accurately, how many group the latter category into the first. coming from borderlands speedrunning, there were many cases where a save and quit would fix a lock in progression, and those were softlocks. then there were other ones where you would be in a state where you couldnt do anything to fix the issue and we referred to those as hardlocks. (for example, saving and quitting during the dialogue section when freddie betrays you, you will not be able to progress no matter what)
22:52 I actually did this one completely by accident, and it was so freaking cool when the anti soft lock happened. This game is awesome. Fantastic vid 🙏
What a great video. My favorite bit is whenever the soft lock dectection voice line triggered past the first one, (Despite pur best efforts...) You skipped straight to the countdown. Its the little touches that matter most. Id love to see more of thos style, especially for games with crazy mechanics like portal.
This was a great watch, I remember finding many of these when routing the softlock% glitchless category on srdc. So glad to see someone properly covering this fun restriction
Thank you so much for making longer content like this, I always loved your style but also wanted more!!!! Love to see it, quickly becoming one of my favorite creators
Omg this video is literally everything child me wanted! The moment I first learned about the soft locking in this game, I was obsessed with trying to get stuck in any way possible (Usually unsuccessfully) and so this really feels like validation for all my hard work going nowhere ^^ Also, 33:50 is such a smooth transition I had to mention it
In Chapter 13, putting both cubes in the starting room is considered a softlock regardless of where you're standing, even though if you're in the room with them, it not only isn't a softlock, but you have MORE tools to work with than you did when you started the level. So there exists a softlock prevention that can trigger when you're not the least bit softlocked. Triggered this myself by accident a couple years ago, and was quite confused as a result.
I don't know. I mean, they specifically programmed the portals to have that behavior... there's no reason for them to code it the way they did unless they thought this might happen. So I don't think you can really call it a glitch. A weird failsafe, sure, sorta like the door in Chamber 11 just popping out of existence. But not a glitch.
As a million people probably have told you: That dialog at the start of the video does play other places or at least something extremely similar plays. I swear I've heard it before.
similar to the softlock you did in chamber 10, if, before the orange portal spawns in the last room(the one you jump in), you place a blue portal on a non moving part of the wall above, it will link to the old orange portal. unless i'm mistaken, you will be unable to link to the one in the same room as you, softlocking you in that room instead, as you can't even reach your own portal to trap yourself in the other room
There's actually one more softlock in Escape 02, although it technically happens after beating the game/the speedrun ends. If you defeat GLaDOS, then open the incinerator and jump into it, you die. But because the game doesn't reload an autosave until you press a key or mouse button, you can let the ending sequence play out. You end up outside, except everything is extremely overexposed and bright white. You never get dragged away and the credits never start, so technically it prevents progressing.
37:12 i literally never realized you were supposed to use the rocket on the tube to get the cube. I have played Portal MANY times, and I have always grabbed a chair that I would stand on and climb into the vent 😭
6:20 I thought you were going to propfly, but completely glitchless I never would’ve thought about hitting that strafe by using the radio. Despite having 8000 hours in TF2 that jump looks ridiculously tight You know what you’re doing with this video, lol
I would love to see a reaction video to these creative softlocks by the original Portal mapping team! Also, S tier video. I really hope to see you cover more Source engine stuff. This is my lifeblood.
Great video! It'd definitely be a lot of work, but it'd be cool to see a video "picking" the true softlocks via the use of glitches and to see which, if any, are well and truly unsolvable.
The door in Chamber 11 gets deleted because it deletes the func_door it's parented to, which is the invisible brush responsible for moving the door prop. The prop is deleted along with it because killing an entity also removed any entities parented to it. This is also why buttons sometimes vanish when a softlock prevention is triggered, since buttons also use func_door to move. A better solution would have been to make the door not close after three seconds on its own, instead having it manually close when the switch timer ends.
You can also softlock in 00 by placing the cube under the X sign on the wall, crouch jumping off of it onto the sign, then picking the cube up and placing it on the camera, once you hop off you’re stuck
I actually HAVE heard the chamber 0 fizzler anti softlock audio before, though, using either the gravity gun to send the cube into it, or by console spawning another, funny thing is, if the button has a cube on it when a second cube fizzles, the button temporarily deactivates, it basically is in it's unpressed state with a cube on it, you could pick up and drop the cube back on it to reset it, or you could wait for the anti softlock line to finish playing, both will cause the button to work again
For chamber 09, you can actually just shoot a portal half-way under the open door and hop through it, then back through the orange portal to make it to the other side. No speed-run strats needed, much easier and consistent.
11:18 you don't need anything that complicated, you can simple shoot a portal directly under the door while it is open, jump through half of the portal sticking out, then jump back in coming out on the other side.
Something interesting I found is that the game crash for Escape 02 got patched on the Nintendo Switch edition of Portal, you'll be spawned back into GLaDOS' room if you do die
I figure they probably moved the fizzler in 00 back because sometimes people were knocking cubes into it without even registering what it was and therefor not understanding the dialogue and potentially getting confused about fizzlers later in the game.
