  • MSF Class walkthrough, know what to expect when taking your MSF course. This video can be used as a guide to help you pass your course and earn your motorcycle license. Follow me as I take the class to earn a perfect score and receive my motorcycle license. Familiarize yourself with a motorcycle and its controls. You can practice these exercises before you take your course to better your chances at passing. The things you will need for the course/class are long jeans with no holes/tears, full fingered gloves, safety glasses, long sleeved shirt, and a DOT approved motorcycle helmet. If you don't have a helmet one may be provided for you, depending on where you take your class. The motorcycles were provided by Harley Davidson Riding Academy. GOOD LUCK!!!

@@JustaGSXR No bike registration needed, just have to renew motorcycle license at same time car license and paying the $36 extra.
In the old days there seemed to be other hurdles, possibly having to go into DMV for renewal separate from regular drivers license and tickets issues. Many people I know that had their M1 in the late 80s to early 2000s let them lapse permanently when they were bike-less.

@phillippeharris5557 New York DMV doesn't provide classes for cars and motorcycles. You'd have to practice on your own, take the classroom safety class on your own, and then make an appointment to take the "road test" in front of a DMV Evaluator, (DMV doesn't provide the bike).
MSF provides the classroom instruction, riding practice, and the bike, and you take the "road test" in front of your MSF Instructor. Once successfully completed, you'll get a card to present to DMV, and your motorcycle permit will be upgraded to a full motorcycle license. MSF all the way.✌🏾

The 500cc v-twins Harley provides are a great bike to learn on. 1st and 2nd gear are speed-throttled and they are low enough to flat foot. It's good to get experience with a 'heavier' bike at low speeds and duck walking. This is more real world than a 150-300cc bike.
Half of our class already owned bikes, a few seemed like veteran riders and we had maybe 4-5 GREEN riders. Maybe a quarter of the class didn't pass =o Mainly, going outside the slow speed turn and hitting cones or going outside the cone course. The staggered cones were tough - even if you can do them 4 out of 5 times, at the end, you only have the ONE shot. If you did them 50/50 during class, then the pressure was high.
Honestly, I think if you didn't pass this class, you would still have a very good chance at passing the DMV course (if you are old enough to skip MSF entirely). EITHER way, pass or not - it's a great thing to do - especially with HD, these bikes, and the way the class/course is set up. You were in a different city, and things looked very similar to ours. Except our course was built from scratch on property they purchased, and we had a real toilet. woot
High speed breaking - be sure to get enough speed in second and downshift during the stop to end up in 1st. You'll have to do it again if you didn't go fast enough. I don't know if there's points lost for doing it multiple times but def get into 1st gear, they want you to pull away after stopping.
One of the BIGGEST things they focus on, and you'll see this in many videos, is - Keep your head and eyes UP and TURN THAT HEAD when you turn the bike. They want your helmet INTO your shoulder if possible - and use your peripheral vision. If you LOOK and turn your head like a professional, it will help your riding immensely. The bike goes where your EYES go. They HAMMER it constantly - so do it. They will wave constantly - HELLOOOO!! - UP HERE - WHY did you hit that cone you were LOOKING at?? - HELLOO! pretty funny actually, but get those eyes UP.
Thanks for the vid - good to 're-experience' the class - I only got 1 picture with the bikes lined up and can send people with questions to your video. Your hard-ass instructors got down to business!

    Hi! Thanx for this upload.
Watching it just before I start my first motorcycle lessons. Got questions though…
    - Can you ride a motorcycle in the USA without a motorcycle license? 😱
    - Is this MSF course the only thing you have to do and pass to get your license?
I am from across the pond (Netherlands) and we have to complete a pretty extensive training, 2 practical and 1 theoretical exam for a motorcycle license. Even if you already have drivers license for a car.

The class is 3 days long. 1 classroom day with a written test and 2 field days on the motorcycle the third day is the test day. No you’re not supposed to ride without a motorcycle license. Whichever way you want to go is fine. There were people who never rode before and they were able to pass the course. I had been riding for a few years before I took the course. If you like a certain bike and can get a good deal then go ahead and buy it. I would recommend the course because you wouldn’t want to drop your bike when learning to ride/practice.

Do the course and get your licence first. You don't know what you don't know so, have the discipline to at least get a basic understanding before exposing yourself to road realities and others to your lack of knowledge and skill.

Yeah I started the free msf course in my state years ago. I took the classroom portion and got a perfect score. When I told them I had never ridden a motorcycle before, I was advised to not take the riding portions of the class. They said it was “technically” for beginners, but if I’d never ridden before, it would probably be too advanced. I couldn’t believe it. I never went back.

    • @jasonmorris350
      @jasonmorris350 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes. The vast majority of license classes in the US are MSF BRCu. There are exercises for swerving and quick stop but the total course is about 11 hours on the bike plus some classroom time. It's better than having no class requirement but you can't turn out riders like in countries where they have tiered and graduated licensing requirements.

Any training can be beneficial if done correctly. I only question one technique these instructors are not correcting…. At speed under 20 mph, especially in this controlled environment, these riders should be engaging rear brake NO front brake, especially in the turn portions of the training. Grab that front brake at low speed even at normal pressure and you can almost certainly guarantee going down at some point…. As soon as they’re done duck walking the instructors should be stressing REAR BRAKE!!!!!!!!! until higher speed exercises are introduced!!!!!!! OMG I made that comment not watching the video in it’s entirety…. Honestly this training is almost contradictory to everything I was taught…. When making turns the rider was backing out of the throttle….. ABSOLUTELY INCORRECT!!!!!!! When in a turn you must be in the throttle or accelerating…. The only thing I’ve heard the instructors saying that I totally agree with is turning their heads to look where they’re going. Sorry but honestly this is very poor instruction….. at least from what I was taught. If you read this and wish to see what I am speaking of watch the instructional videos from the former Law Enforcement Member in Florida…. His instructions are the same we received up North and are tested and true!!!!! Lots of turning not stressing leaning the motorcycle…. This is a matter of safety not preference….. Sorry but I’m being honest in observation…..

I was using the back brake but instructors were asking me use the front brakes. I started on dirt bikes and would mostly use the back brakes on the dirt. Idk why they would be pushing us to use the front brake when at slow speeds but I didn’t listen to them anyway.

@@cruisermike I by no means was looking to insult anyone or cause any trouble however, this is a topic near and dear to me…. On a low speed course conducting maneuvers to gain confidence turning in these type of configurations,it’s a combination of throttle, clutch and rear braking that is key. If you were to attempt to come to a low speed stop turning and engage the front not rear brake ……. you’ll almost certainly go down. Practice is great but I completely disagree with any lesson avoiding the rear brake at lower speeds. I also didn’t hear or see anyone going in and out of the throttle with clutch control to maneuver….. these fundamentals were stressed upon us when learning these types of courses…. The Shamrock, Snowman, Clover etc….. Also the brake and escape exercise….. they should have been instructing the riders to downshift as well as engaging both brakes so you can immediately escape the danger instead of stalling…. This was another skill we were taught completely contradictory to what I was watching!!!!!! We did those courses on fully dressed Road Kings…. Using clutch, throttle and braking, you’d be amazed how nimble that big wheel can be!!!! Either way please ride safe and enjoy….. getting out on the road is always a great feeling…

There’s pros and cons to it. Pros are you don’t have to worry about damaging your personal bike. You get to ride another bike and see how it handles, every bike is different. Cons are that you’re out of your comfort zone when riding a new bike. However it doesn’t take long to get used to a new bike depending on your experience, it only took me about an hour.
