True, most do. All but one of our group did (they got nervous and tipped the bike in the U-turn box, felt bad because they had been working very hard). I had ridden dirt bikes before but still had a tough time Day 1 with the clutch control and a bit Day 2 until it finally "clicked" in my head and I got used to my training bike's weird clutch.

Same for me the first time. I missed 11 points on the U-Turn box and you were only allowed 10 max on the first 2 exercises. Failed by 1 point since everything else was perfect. Hey, another subscriber just showed up after all this time! Before I tell you about my class, I wanted to thank you for the ride around town today; that was fun and you had a lot of info. My class was much different and less stringent, and get a load of this; there was no test. Okay, let me clarify that, but before I do, I was concerned as anyone always is; no one is alone there. Now I see you're doing mods, how cool. Some after-class folks might not stop by because they're exhausted, then after that, they forget. But, you should be seeing newer ones; you're very easy to listen to.
I worried about those two things your brought up; the cones and the U-turns/figure 8s. Turned out, we were to go along a larger perimeter (separated by dotted-lines) first, then use the inward lanes, about 4 ft shorter. I guess I wasn't paying attention and used the smaller lanes and was okay with that the whole time and a little surprised how easy it was (I did ride mini-bikes as a kid). I was corrected for not doing as instructed, but only with a smile and a compliment, so that was good. Talk about confidence. I'm getting to the "no test part", hang on.
Our "cones" were little 2" disks on the pavement, and the only larger ones were only for a stop, so they were never confusing, or stood out too much. The instructor (only 1 for 8 people), went through each exercise after explaining them (which was sometimes confusing) so we could see how it was done (which made it not confusing). I drove my car 100 miles total for two days because of price and reviews. There was one 5 miles away that was $70 more. I was told the salary of the secretary to answer phones was the reason. Mine has a website and a cell to leave a message some of the time. I don't care, I saved 70 bucks! It was $179 (in 2023) and the classroom course was online, which did include a test, but was not part of the BRC by our instructor.
Another thing is that if you really aren't comfortable being first and you're worried about that, you can ask either the instructor or another classmate (or both) that you would appreciate someone else being first. The do not want you uncomfortable, but someone has to go first. My instructor accommodated someone who asked. I was first a couple of times and I think it improved my confidence. My classmates knew no more than I did regarding this class, and I had to do it anyway, right? I had ridden those mini-bikes and a motorcycle a few time, so I was given a different bike as well (not a Rebel), which the instructor also used to perform his riding examples.
So, about the "no test". We were supposed to do a riding exercise and practice it 2 times, then go on to the next exercise. That's not how it happened. We did them 3 times, but that meant nothing to us, because we didn't know the rules of the instructor. Our "test" was the 3rd ride, but we weren't told that. So, we had confidence from the first two rides, then the third time was just super easy (easier). We took the test without knowing it was a test, but it still wasn't over. When we were in line on our bikes for the next 2 practice exercises, the instructor said, "Congratulations everybody; you all passed". We were like, what?
He said we had 2 more exercises, but that no matter who bad we did (based on our performance), that unless someone wrecked their bike, we would all pass - and we did. It was really so neat and so unexpected. Those were some great exercises!
Then, for the written multiple choice paper test, we were all given a clipboard and a pen. The instructor said we could not use our phones. Then, he went around the corner and said he'd be back if a few minutes and that if we needed anything, we could ask the another classmates.
It then turned into a learning session. We all discussed the questions and the answers and filled in our answers. We did not use our phones. The instructor came back and none of us got a perfect score, nor did we need to. We could miss 5 questions and pass, but no one missed 5 questions. I wouldn't really call that a test, but it was informative and I believe a positive thing to do. I'm sure none of us would have missed that many on our own, had he not done that.
There was nothing wrong with what my instructor did, in fact I'd say it was brilliant on both the road "test" and paper "questionnaire". You're right, "They do not want you to fail", and it's not because my instructor was different than yours. He had a different technique, but the result was the same. We practiced like you did and we got tested like you did;. We just didn't know it, and therefore we weren't worried about it. We did well because we were genuinely trying to be better, not because we were being scored (even though we were).
Even though every place might be different, the result is the same. They want you to pass and if you mess up, they will tell you how not to. One guy rode off in a bizarre direction and the instructor said, "Hey man, where are you going? Come back here!" and it was funny and he wasn't punished for it, he just came back and we kept going. A girl dropped her bike in a turn (in practice) and she passed. I will be more fun that you can possibly imagine, and will also make you a better car driver when you leave that class.
BTW: Your insurance carrier might give you a car discount (5%) for having the endorsement, even if you don't have a bike insured with them. It elevates your license. Call them and check.

Lost some points on the quick stop too but ended up getting at 92. Only one person failed due to dropping bike during u turn. I think he slightly panicked and hit his breaks during it. MSF Coach here, two things you are saying that will ensure people fail on their BRC skills test. For Eval 3 the speed has to be between 12 and 18 MPH, not 10. 10mph on second attempt will award max points. And you are timed to assess your speed and your standard stopping distance at that speed bracket. At 18mph, we expect you to stop no further than 20 feet to demonstrate good stopping technique. For your speed the standard was 15 feet.
For someone coming at 12mph is 8. So saying 15 is the target distance will force ppl over 15mph to slam on their brakes and ppl close to 12 to not worry and get points for overshooting their standard distance.

Wow I need to go wherever y’all are going, i’ve taken a harley davidson msf course at the same place twice, and failed both times. The first fail was understandable, but the second I only hit one cone causing an immediate fail… There was an instructor in training that has been riding for 30+ years that had to do it with us and he failed even worst than I did. Would highly recommend against Harleys classes, can’t say the same for all of them but I’ve heard many similar stories at different places.

I bought a 2020 883 for my 36th birthday last summer. Never rode a motorcycle prior to taking the MSF course. Other than being nervous, not having a clue what I was doing..they had 6 of us in the class, 4 had endorsements already. He kept the 2 of us non licensed in the back, began to get frustrated when we asked to see the excersise again and made alot of unnecessary comments. Day 2 was a Saturday, the dealership was giving a "free beer and burgers" event. There were about 10+ riders standing on the sides yelling comments as we were trying to learn, no one told them to go back up the hill to the event. Needless to say l, I walked out on day 3 and I plan on getting my permit from the DMV as well as doing the road test there. 10 minutes with a buddy, I learned more than the 3 days in the course. My Harley experience was completely ruined and did not ride for 6 months after.

I had a similar experience last year at the local Harley dealership. I intend to just do the DMV test as I feel the instructor did not give any remediation if a person made a mistake.

The MSF test makes a lot me sense for actual riding than the stupid California DMV test. Thanks for explaining what they cover. Basically just interested, I have been riding for over 50 years. I still practice all the time especially in the spring when the realriding starts. I generally ride year around but in the winter it is for errands around town weather permitting.

Does a person need to know how to use a clutch in order to take the ride test? I HOPE NOT!! The whole reason why i want to ride, is because there are 150-300cc scooters out there that have no clutch, that can go highway speeds! To me thats what makes it exciting to want to ride a bike. A clutch is a huge turn off for me!
    >I do not want to learn how to use a clutch, and I do want my motorcycle endorsement!<
If a clutch is the only thing that existed on a bike, I would never be interested in wanting to ride. But the times have dramatically changed! Now there are so many CVT bikes that is becoming a very big category within the motorcycle arena. I have seen so many youtube videos, and there are a ton of new riders out there that want absolutely nothing to do with a clutch bike! And I’m the same way! Why would we want to take a test at the DMV on a 500cc clutch bike, when that is not even a bike that we are not interesting in owning!!!??
All I want is a scooter that is 150-300cc. And Honda & Yamaha has a lot of great options! In Minnesota, a scooter that size is considered an actual motorcycle. According to Minnesota laws. Which means I should be able to test on that scooter as well, in order to get my motorcycle endorsement.
Are the DMV laws out of date for new riders???

    • @mixedraceable
      @mixedraceable ปีที่แล้ว

Most places that offer a motorcycle training class, practice and skills evaluation test in order to get your BRC card/ certification of completion expect you to be most familiar with your bike meaning that you need to be able to operate the motorcycle correctly as that is the way to get out there ready for the road. Once you pass and get your M endorsement you can get any type of motor vehicle that you are licensed for and you feel comfortable. I'm not sure if there are any places that offer a motorcycle course that don't have clutches on a bike

why would you go take a motorcycle class to ride a scooter? and why wouldn't you want to learn how to use a clutch? that's pretty good skill to have in life. regardless just learn how to ride it on your own scooters aren't that difficult to ride
