Here's What The Hunger Games Cast Was Supposed To Look Like

  • Four years before Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, and more brought their characters to life onscreen in 2012’s The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins introduced them to the world in her dystopian novel of the same name. The Hunger Games series - both books and films - were a massive success with kids and adults.
While taking a character from page to screen can be a difficult process, full of both necessary and creative changes, the people behind the Hunger Games adaptation were able to get the characters pretty close to what their source material said they looked like - at least, mostly. Here’s what the Hunger Games cast was supposed to look like.
    #HungerGames #Cast #Actors

After Katniss, my favorite character is Cinna. The rest are ok, but Cinna has a depth to him that the others don’t because he risked his life to help Katniss, all the while knowing he would be killed for it. He made Katniss stand out.

They never explicitly say it in any of the books but a theory I've always had is that Cinna's from one of the districts and somehow got out and became a stylist in the capital which if true would make sense why he's so cool to Katniss throughout the series.

I understand that point but it did feel like no one from 12 was starving like we were meant to believe they were. No one in the main cast looked hungry and the outlying districts were supposed to be full of starving people. They all looked very well fed and fit.

How did they make Kristen Stewart deathly thin in Breaking Dawn? She’s already really thin, so I doubt that was her and not CG.
She’s supposed to portray a girl that’s on the brink of starvation. Even the people in the town weren’t fully fed. Maybe more than the Seam, but not by much.
I get she doesn’t want people to look up to an unnaturally thin girl. But that’s kind of the point in this story. Context matters.

@@BlueDauntlessA very interesting point! I agree, none of the characters of District 12 looked any less well-fed then the people of the Capitol. It's the weirdness of the Young Adult genre, I guess: if it were a show for the kids, you naturally wouldn't want to show an unhealthy role model, but if it were made for adults, you would want to create something realistic, believable. As it is, The Hunger Games falls somewhere in the middle.

@@BlueDauntless There is one element, which is never mentioned, but I think is important, and it is the matter of physical strength in case of Katniss. I practiced archery for a few years, and a bow is not easy to use. You *need* physical strength to be good at it. If someone is extremely skinny, that doesn't only mean a lack of fat, but most cases a lack of muscle and an overall weakness. While I understand that Katniss was described very skinny in the books, I think the fact that they were hunting and getting a bit more food than other people in the district, so she could maintain a healthier weight and greater physical strength is much more fitting to the level of fitness she displays.

Right, obviously the author had both to fill-in more space and to help visualize the character but in the movie it really means nothing unless it has something to do with the plot. Isabella sure had the right size for Katniss, but too white. Alexander was way too tall to be Peeta who's "medium height with a stocky build", so Josh was the right size. But say if it's between green and blue color just for the sake of the character to follow the description in the book, personally don't find that important. Sometimes it's not that important if it's not a character defining trait. Putting Effie in her natural hair would have been out of the question, but having green eyes rather than blue wasn't necessary, and had Snow worn snake contacts, or coin wear light grey, it would have been distracting.

I just watched the movies for the first time at the age of 22, and I had to take some time after watching them to mentally return to reality... I genuinely cannot imagine how difficult it would have been for a child/teen actor to film those movies and separate the fantasy from reality every day. Yes, ideally 16 year old actors would've been more compelling in a sense, but at the same time, we do need to be careful to prioritize the mental and physical well-being of children over accuracy in film making, especially when you can get actors that are only a few years older than their characters are supposed to be who still look relatively young, but they are actually adults. I also can't remember Haymitch's description in the books so tell me if I'm wrong but I think his actor did a perfect job and captured Haymitch amazingly. In spite of the other changes in appearance and obvious age difference to their characters, especially with Katniss and Gale, I think they embodied their characters well

All of the main leads were too old. The whole point of the series was that the districts were being reaped of their CHILDREN. None of the leads look like they are children. Without that, the story and the tragedy of the Games loses a lot of the original punch.

Interesting video. I don't think such things as eye color are that important in the big picture, but your points are well taken.
But I can't imagine how any member of the cast could have been improved upon. The films were close enough to perfect!
However, I'm concerned that in casting the prequel, "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," they're going to make a huge error. I've read they want an African American actress to play Lucy Gray Baird. Mark my words, if they do that, the film will flop.
Lucy Gray, or more likely her cousin Maude Ivory, is probably Katniss Everdeen's grandmother. Therefore the actress needs to resemble Jennifer Lawrence.

I do think Finnick's sea green eyes were significant though. (Ofc Coin's and Snow's too, since theirs indicate their cold personality, symbolically)
Katniss, Peeta, and Haymitch later makes their own memorial book (?) with all the memories that they don't wish to be forgotten, like the previous district 12 kids that went into the games, the dead victors etc. And they make sure to capture (or, Peeta paints) Finnick's sea green eyes in it. But that scene wasn't in the movie so I guess it doesn't matter 🙃

I think Hayley Steinfeldt would have been a better Katniss. I thought Jennifer looked too old for the role. And Jennifer’s Katniss looked too healthy to be thisclose to starving. Woody was perfect for Haymitch, but the other guy considered for the role was John C Reilly and he could have pulled it off too. Lenny was perfect for Cinna… but I always saw Prince as Cinna. I always thought Liam would have better cast as Peeta, but he WAS Gale by Mockingjay.
